A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars Stereo Review December 1986.......2007-04-05

Going through some old stuff, I ran across a review of this album that I'd saved 20+ years ago in the hope that I could find it (the CD) someday. Here's what Michael Smolen of Stereo Review magazine said about it in the December, 1986 issue:

"Covering every major phase of T. Dream's illustrious career, 'Dream Sequence' is a two-disc set of the group's finest work from 1974 to 1983. Such care and attention to digital remastering have rarely been equaled. From 'Phaedra' to 'The Dream Is Always the Same', synthesizers, drums and electric guitars have never sounded more alive than they do here. Disc Two of this set just may be the finest CD in existence."

This review was of the Virgin CDTD 1 release. Don't know if Amazon's offering is from the same batch.

3 out of 5 stars a weird dream.......2003-09-03

They were spacy, new agey and electronically ambient long before 808:State, Devo, Hawkwind, Kraftwerk or William Orbit but this 2 CD career retrospective of Berlin's prolific Tangerine Dream is perfectly timed. In that 30 years, the Dream have had the greatest impact on the widest variety of music, most notably in the sample-happy ambient and new age electronica scene of the `90s. Though the band went through three dozen different lineups and four distinct stages of development, the experimental and minimalist period of the late `60s and early `70s is given short thrift here chiefly because they didn't sign with Virgin until mid' 70s. Fortunately, most of these instrumentals are also from the band's most influential period - the Moogy moods and stark sequencer trance styles of the mid-1970s and the more organic sound journeys of their final years with Virgin in the early `80s. Obviously, assembling a greatest hits collection of Tangerine Dream's relentless, trance-inducing barrage of multi-minute rhythm and sound nuggets tunes is no easy task; their albums often contained only one extended song per side of vinyl and that dilemma is prominent on the first disc. With fully hour and a bit of the band's mystic, swirling and elongated soundscapes, it contains much from their early work with the label, including the title track from 1974's milestone release Phaedra and a three minute excerpt from the 17 minute Rubycon Part One from 1975's Rubycon, though the inclusion of the complete 20 minute sound journey Ricochet Part Two a cut from the live Ricochet is laudable. The second disc sacrifices the truncated for the overstated, offering up complete atmospheric orchestral slabs from 1980's Tangram, 1982's Logos, the hard-to-find Cloudburst Flight from 1979 and a taste of their soundtrack work (Beach Scene from 1981's Thief ). What you won't find is anything from 1978's Cyclone, their much-hated vocal debut or the multitude of snore-inducing soundtracks from stinker flicks like The Keep, Firestarter, Flashpoint or Vision Quest. That's a good thing, leaving untarnished the notion that their best works remain masterpieces of aural sculpture often imitated but never duplicated and more popular now - whether rave-goers know it or not - than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars The best TD has to offer.......2002-06-14

This is the Tangerine Dream I like. Not too far fetched and disturbing like their very early efforts (Zeit, Alpha, etc.), and before they became commercial and bland producers of techno (berk!).

My first TD album had many songs from the Haslinger era (The Parc, Tyger and especially Underwater Sunlight). I loved their music best during long-distance drives. Then I discovered "Poland" which introduced me to a more remote style of music. Finally I took the plunge and bought Tangram, Exit and Dream Sequence. I am not especially fond of their early-70 music and I believe that with this album I have been exposed to just enough of it. I know a lot of people love their Phaedra and Rubycon albums, but I personnaly like music with a few more notes and melody (that's me...).

Anyway I have discovered TD's Schmoelling-Virgin era and I am very happy I did. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys space-like music, like Jean-Michel Jarre but with more substance.

A bientôt!

Jean C.

5 out of 5 stars The Keep- more music, PLEASE!.......2002-01-01

What a way to start the new year. I've just found and order-
ed Tangerine Dream's "Dream Sequence," which contains music
from "The Keep." I've been looking for the entire sound-
track for over 10 years. They didn't make it. If anyone has
more info on the music from this excellent soundtrack,
and where I can purchase it, please e-mail me.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2001-04-05

I purchased this great double cd in 1986 as a French import and have never tired of listning to it! Disc one containes my favorite - "The Dream Is Always the Same" and "Ricochet Part Two". Disc two gets even better with "Force Majeure", "Love on a Real Train" (from the movie RISKY BUSINESS)and the incredable "Logos Part One (A&B)" and "Logos Part Two" ( from the movie THE KEEP)! This double CD will make your system sound GREAT, or perhaps indicate what new equipment you might need! Buy and enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

4 out of 5 stars MarMSED.......2005-08-27

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

1 out of 5 stars I don't know why this is so highly rated.......2007-02-09

I bought this because a few people had put it in their Amazon lists. I just didn't like it at all. It is one of those albums where you play it, and you don't take notice of it until the CD stops playing. It is very old and the music is simplistic. Cool cover though.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Tangerine Dream .......2004-07-28

Originally issued in '85 as a triple album, this essential and ultimate Tangerine Dream collection fits nicely onto 2 CDs (19 tracks, 133 min.). This particular release is the 2002 reissue of the 1985 compilation (exact same tracks), albeit with a new cover.

This collection was originally issued shortly after TD enjoyed true broad commercial success for the last time with the soundtrack for the movie "Risky Business" (starting and ending the compilation on tracks 1 and 19). All other tracks inbetween are the highlights of the Virgin Records era of TD (thankfully leaving out pre-1973 experiments like Zeit and Alpha), starting with excerpts (too short, in my opinion) of "Phaedra" and "Rubycon". The tracks move along pretty much chronologically, ending with "White Eagle" from 1982.

The set includes 2 side-long tracks, "Ricochet Part II" and "Tangram Part I". The "Ricochet" track shows TD at its peak, a 20 minute oddisey of throbbing sequencers and soaring guitar solos. "Ricochet" stems from '75 but hasn't aged a day. And to think that the "Ricochet" and "Tangram" albums actually made serious dents in the UK album charts in the mid-70s! Those were the days! If you're gonna to buy just one Tangerine Dream CD, this is the one . . .

If you're looking for more "essential" Tangerine Dream, check out last year's "Bootleg 1", which brings 5 live concerts from the 70s.

      3 out of 5 stars An interesting 1977-1983 overview.......2004-07-04

As strange as it may initially seem, this is an ideal compilation for fans of Tangerine Dream's early period: very few tracks are taken from pre-1976 albums (causing few overlaps for those who already own the 1970-1975 recordings), and its 1977-1983 overview is interesting in its own right, but not quite impressive enough to warrant the purchase of the individual 1977-1983 albums themselves. In other words, both its strengths and weaknesses make it a solid stand-alone double album. The music on this compilation bears the mark of Tangerine Dream's post-Rubycon (1975) aesthetic, as they gradually leaned away from the vast, evocative and free soundscapes of their early work towards a more structured, mainstream and altogether predictable approach. If you are new to Tangerine Dream, I'd suggest getting the early albums first (Phaedra [1974] being arguably the best entry point); this compilation can then cover their later, somewhat less memorable period.

      5 out of 5 stars A good value sampler.......2002-09-25

This 2 CD set contains a fair representation of almost all of the Tangerine Dream albums recorded in the period 1973 to 1983 (the only ones missing are "Sorcerer", "Pergamon" and "Cyclone"). While it is not always the best track from each album that makes it into this set, and some are presented in bleeding chunk form only, these discs do give the listener a good overview of each album, making this a good sampler set from which to set out on an exploration of the music of Tangerine Dream's so-called Virgin Years. I don't usually approve of 'best of' collections, and usually rate them accordingly, but I'm prepared to make an exception in this case because of its completeness, variety of programming and the great value for money that this release represents. This release will be of little interest to established collectors of TD's music of this period but beginners could do a lot worse than start here.

"The Pilgrim's Progress from this world to that which is to come: Delivered under the similitude of a dream..." So begins John Gielgud's narration--and his subsequent reading of the role of Christian--in this superb adaptation of Vaughan Williams's radio play, based on scenes from John Bunyan's classic allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. Different from the composer's later opera, this work fares well on disc, fueled by dramatic characterizations and affecting music. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, faith filled journey by Vaughan Williams.......2005-05-31

All of the greatness and beauty of Vaughan Williams' music fused with the epic from John Bunyan and the great narration and voices, including Sir John Geilgud, make this one of the best of all the sacred music from Vaughan Williams. An incredible musical journey on this disc moving forward to an emotional climax as Christian reaches Mount Zion. It is highly recommended.

This is the third in the series of compilation discs assembled by Robert Aubry Davis, host and producer of the long-standing public radio series Millennium of Music. Where volume two of the series drew on music for the Christmas season, this volume concentrates on music for Holy Week and Easter; more interestingly, it draws from the rich and varied catalog of early music recordings distributed in the U.S. by Qualiton Imports under the "Gioia Antiqua" imprint. Possibly the most valuable thing about this is that it features lesser-known performers right alongside well-established, highly respected groups such as the Orlando Consort and the Bach Collegium Japan (both in fine form here). Of course, with such a variety of lesser-known ensembles and small labels, this juxtaposition flatters some of these artists more than others. Some appear quite impressive (Schola Gregoriana Pragensis and Ensemble Daedalus, for example); others seem not ready for prime time (Westfälische Kantorei and the Spanish choir Musica Ficta). A particular treat is a medieval motet played by the legendary Dutch recorder trio Sour Cream (one of whose members was conductor Frans Brüggen). On a reasonably priced compilation disc like this, variable quality isn't a major drawback--use it to explore, find what appeals to you, and go on from there. It should be quite a stimulating endeavor. --Matthew Westphal

A beautiful selection of mostly choral pieces from the Baroque and pre-Baroque era. The choices are a mix of the familiar and unfamiliar which make listening to this a pleasure. Chosen for the Easter season, the selections are spiritually moving and will put you in touch with all that is sacred and holy. Performance is impeccable and the sound is rich, resonating with the lofty space of a cathedral.

It was a treat to finally hear these songs recorded by Martin. For a long time I have been wondering what they would sound like in the end, and now I have enjoyed they way he has treated the materiel we collected together during the late 1970s and early 1980s. I do hope these recordings find a lot of listeners that are interested in the period of the troubadours and onwards. I do promise that YOU are in for a treat when you listen to the excellent musicians that Martin surrounds himself with and also the clarity of his voice and the skill with which he explores this period in music history. So I do highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this period of musical history.

What a treat! French the way it was, before the Renaissance, before the Enlightenment, before everyone spoke like Maurice Chevalier. Best's love for Provençal is evident, and he infuses reverence and irreverence alike into these selections. Fine examples for any would-be Troubador. Good historical info and English lyrics in the liner notes. Provençal lyrics are the only things lacking.

4 out of 5 stars Why Are 'The Sequence' Kept A Secret?.......2006-06-01

When you hear about women in the beginning of hip-hop, you mostly hear about Salt-N-Pepper, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shaunte, and Queen Latifah. But you rarely hear about The Sequence, a female rap trio that came out in the late 70's/early 80's. I have never heard of this group myself until a few months ago when I was listening to the radio and heard "Funk You Up." It was my first time hearing this song, yet it was familiar because it has been sampled by various hip-hop artists. What I like about The Sequence is that they were having fun, combining their rap and vocal skills to create an entertaining medley of old school hip-hop and R&B. But without a doubt, "Funk You Up" has to be the best song on this CD. Hoolllaaa!

Way back in 1979, I remember listening to a deff record called "Rapper's Reprise (Jam, Jam)" by the Sugar Hill Gang feat. a young trio of female MC's. These MC's were Angie B (better known much later as Angie Stone) Cherryl the Pearl and Blondie p.k.a. "Sequence". Although not as lyrically sharp as the top Bronx female MC's at the time (Sha-Rock, MC Queen Lisa-Lee, Mercedes Ladies, etc.) They would put out "Monster Jams" and a slew of memorable singles that would become Hip-Hop classics. From the fly joint "Monster Jam" (feat. Spoony G) to the crazy deff "Funk you up", "Sequence" will go down in Hip-Hop history as the first ladies of Rap music and the top female Rap artists on the seminal "Sugar Hill" label. These girls had some classic joints! Check it out!!
