While John Cale certainly gave the first couple of Velvet Underground albums a signature sound, his departure enabled Lou Reed to do exactly what he does best: write kick-ass, stripped-down rock songs. On Loaded his talent comes to full fruition. Who can imagine a world without "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll," arguably two of the greatest rock tunes ever penned? The brilliance of those songs is so bright, it's easy to overlook a couple of other Reed masterpieces: the tender, epic discourse of "New Age" (which highlights his assured sense of poetic wordplay: "And when you kissed Robert Mitchum / Gee, but I thought you'd never catch him!") and the extended sweet blues romp of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'." On Loaded the Velvet Underground--who before had hit the sonic ceiling experimenting with shattered chords, feedback, screeching violas, and what Reed once claimed was "the fastest guitar playing ever"--eschew the dark side of noise for clarity. Check out the ringing chime that begins "Who Loves the Sun" and the sterling (no pun intended) guitar riff that drives "Rock & Roll." This is not to say that the old ragged punch of the original Velvets is completely gone. Moe Tucker still beats a mean set of skins; there's no stopping Sterling Morrison's train-wreck rhythm guitar on "Train Round the Bend"; and "Head Held High" achieves near-"Sister Ray" moments of madness. --Tod Nelson

Loaded : Completing the Velvet Underground's Legacy.......2007-06-28

Loaded, is the Velvet Underground's fourth and final studio recording.
Released in September 1970, one month after Lou Reed calls it quits and begans solo work. Maureen Tucker is absent from 'Loaded' out on maternity leave. "Oh Mo, where did you go?" - The VU really should have waited.
By now, new bassist Doug Yule took over as lead vocalist on far too many tracks. Yes, the band was on the edge of breaking up.
Despite all of this, as always The Velvets still produce a fantastic album.
'Loaded' is the VU's most commercially accessible and the band finally signed onto a major label. Although like their earlier lps - 'Loaded' didn't sell very well.
This last album does contain some really wonderful tunes. Includes : the fun, rollicking track "Rock & Roll" and "Sweet Jane" - the guitar bursts on "Head Held High" although it may sound like a repetitive generic rock song by many. My personal favorite track, the opener : "Who Loves the Sun"-
Although much more direct and different then earlier outputs, which of course can be a good thing. This album features one of the VU's biggest stinkers = "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" a country hillbilly type of Rock sound that Lou Reed never should have attempted.
-Loaded- does complete the Velvet Underground's Rock legacy. An end to a highly influential rock band as Reed and Morrison experimented with alternate tunings and fuzzy noise later copied by future bands. -
Such followers (many are favorites of mine) who were influenced by the Velvet Underground include CAN, Television, The Fall, the Dream Syndicate, Pavement, R.E.M. and continuing the New York no-wave tradition: Sonic Youth.

not as groundbreaking - but a personal favorite.......2007-06-02

post john cale velvet underground tends to get rated a little lower - which makes sense Cale was one of the great innovators of the time.. but i actually listen to this more than the other albums... It may not explore uncharted territories but it is perfect in its own way.. not a bad track on this album!

The Last, and A Heck of a Least.......2006-11-01

The Velvet Underground followed up their mellow third record with the more rocking Loaded. Doug Yule, who first appeared on the previous release, sang lead on four tracks. Drummer Moe Tucker was pregnant and unable to play, so Doug's brother Billy sat in on drums. John Cale was long gone. Lou Reed left the band shortly before the album's release, and claimed that it had not been mastered to his satisfaction. Obviously, this was a different kind of Velvet Underground record.

The same two songs are always the first to be mentioned in every review of the Velvets' last album. "Sweet Jane" is rightfully one of the band's best-known numbers, as it is a jubilant pop song with sturdy guitar riffs and self-assured vocals by Lou Reed. It is also a tune about the joy of domestic bliss, which wasn't exactly Reed's signature topic. The other well-known track on Loaded is "Rock And Roll". Now, I hate to expose the naked emperor, but this is not that great of a song. It is very pedestrian, not very inspired, and frankly quite trite. Their is no reason for it to be praised as one of the songs that best displays Reed's songwriting talent, especially when there are several other songs on this album that more rightly qualify. Among these are the Mamas and Papas-esque "Who Loves the Sun?", which opens the record. Initially, this may strike the listener as the type of song that represents everything that the Velvets were against on their first two albums. But let us not forget that the first track on their debut was the hazzy, sunny pop song "Sunday Morning". (And as I said in another review, the opening track of their eponymous third album - "Candy Says" - must have been quite a shock to first-time listeners as well.) In general, Reed eschews songs of sex and drugs for more down-to-earth subjects. The lyrics are more pensive if not profoundly philosophical, such as on the eloquent "New Age" (which contains the cringe-inducing rhyme of "Mitchum" and "catch him"), the tuneful "I Found A Reason", and the closing track "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'". "Cool It Down" has an old-fashioned quality to it, and is another highlight on Loaded. However, although "Head Held High" and "Train Round the Bend" recall some of the manic moments of the band's first two records, they are lyrically repetitive and uninteresting, as is "Lonesome Cowboy Bill".

These soft spots are not enough to drag the album down too much, but like the ones on The Velvet Undergroud, they are enough to lose it a few points. The fact that their last two albums were different does not by itself cause them to be the slightly lesser records that they are. Rather, it is the fact that Lou Reed - who was the lone leader of the band now - simply sounds uninspired some (but certainly not all) of the time. But please don't let me be misunderstood - the positive is absolutely worth accentuating on Loaded. Lou Reed's pop songs were among the best he's ever written, and his thoughtful side shone brightly in tracks that were of slower tempo but impenetrable vitality. While more accessible in the conventional sense, it is not the place to begin a Velvet Underground collection. It is still best to start with The Velvet Underground & Nico or The Best of the Velvet Underground: Words and Music of Lou Reed. (Loaded was the second of VU's studio albums that I heard.) It's too bad that the original release does not include the full-length version of "Sweet Jane", which can be only found on the Fully Loaded edition or the box set. Although I wouldn't recommend buying Fully Loaded just to have that version of the song, it does have some first-rate stuff like "Ride Into the Sun", "Ocean", and "I'm Sticking With You", the latter two of which can also be found on the very worthwhile collection simply titled VU. (And you can't really go wrong with the box set, if you are willing to take that plunge. It contains what is probably the bravest and most influential body of work in American rock.)

To many fans of popular music, the end of an era occurred in April 1970, when The Beatles broke up. To fans of altermative rock, an era ended a few months later, when Lou Reed left The Velvet Underground. Loaded was the last of their proper albums, and to some, the least. But if this is the weakest link, then The Velvet Underground's chain will remain forever unbroken.

Okay, after hearing all this [...] about new albums by Paris Hilton, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Simpson, I did what I always do: Escaped into that happy little land known as Music Made Before I Was Born. To be more specific, I listened to Sweet Jane, by far VU's greatest song, for the billionth time. It never gets old. The same can be said about Loaded... well, most of it.
Every VU album has a cliche around it - VU & Nico is the one from left field, White Light/White Heat is the speed-fueled party, VU is the quiet morning after, and Loaded is the pop album, minus the sex, the drugs, the murder (kind of ironic when you think about how being "loaded" can refer to being drunk or having a loaded gun). And the group pulls it off, though sometimes it seems they're trying too hard (I Found a Reason, Cool It Down). But there's a lot to like about Loaded: Who Loves the Sun, the aforementioned Sweet Jane, ode to Man's Greatest Invention Rock and Roll - like Ginny and Lou Reed, my life was also saved by rock 'n' roll. Not to mention album-closer Oh! Sweet Nuthin', New Age, Head Held High and Train 'Round the Bend. Loaded isn't perfect - subtract Lonesome Cowboy Bill, I Found a Reason, and Cool It Down, then we'll talk - but it's a good one!

Their worst album but still not bad (3.5 stars).......2006-08-07

Released in 1970, Loaded would be the final Velvet Underground release to feature their leader and chief songwriter Lou Reed. Like their previous albums, Loaded would sound different from its predecessor, this time sporting more of a hard rock sound. The performances sound almost professional compared to their looseness of their previous works. Also worth noting is that while all the songs are good, they're not quite as memorable or as exciting as before. The now classic tracks "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll" are the best tracks as well as the only ones that really capture the spirit of their previous output. Another great song is "New Age", a track that not only has some great chord changes but also recalls the beauty of "I'm Set Free" and "I'll Be Your Mirror." The opening "Who Loves The Sun" is psychedelic pop similar to "Sunday Morning" and "Femme Fatale" from their first album, Velvet Underground and Nico. While rockers like "Cool It Down", "Head Held High", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", and "Train Round the Bend" are all decent, they don't touch anything off their previous albums. The same goes for the mellower "I Found a Reason" and "Oh! Sweet Nothin"; both are okay but they've done better. All told, while Loaded is still a good album and the band certainly don't embarrass themselves like many do on their last albums, it's not on par with their previous classic material.

Great Album.......2007-01-10

I consider myself a hardcore Velvet Underground fan, and I absolutely love this album. In fact, I am going to blaspheme and admit that I prefer it not only to the eponymous third album, but also the band's legendary debut (GASP!). I realize Velvet Underground and Nico is one of the most influential albums of all time, and I listen to it a lot, but I like many of the songs on Loaded better. (I don't think anything else the band did can touch the raw glory of White Light/White Heat).

Velvet Underground fans often complain that this album is less edgy and groundbreaking than their other three efforts. I agree with this claim completely, and I think Loaded is the only album the band released that really sounds like a product of its era. At the same time, I think 1969-1970 was an incredibly inspired time for music, so fitting into this era is a good thing. 1969 and 1970 witnessed a shift in the rock world away from psychedelia toward country and folk sensibilities. 1969 saw The Band release their second album, the Stones release the country-tinged Let It Bleed, and Dylan release the pure-country Nashville Skyline. 1970 featured Zeppelin's shift to folk with their third album. Even the true champions of psychedelia, the Grateful Dead, released the folk rock classics Workingman's Dead and American Beauty in 1970. Loaded stands up well amid these albums.

I also think I like this album because I typically listen to classic rock rather than the alternative rock many Velvet Underground fans prefer. Along with the Velvet Underground, I would say the Rolling Stones and pre-'75 Grateful Dead are my favorite bands. "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" are two of the greatest classic rock songs ever. "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" is almost as great, and the rest of the songs are better than filler to my ears (I love "Cool It Down," contrary to many of the other reviewers). And while the album lacks the alternative sound, some of the lyrics still hint at Lou Reed's cynicism ("Who Loves the Sun", "Train Round the Bend").

There is no doubt in my mind that Loaded is far more accessible than the other three Velvet Undergound albums. It is the one recording by the band that I think could appeal to many casual listeners. People can quibble over whether this really is the Velvet Underground because of all the personnel changes, but that just draws attention away from the great music you will find here. The extra tracks are a nice touch and worth the extra money, though not essential to most folks. Still, any fan of the Velvet Underground (especially Lou Reed) or classic rock should check this album out.

Nice "alternate album" with some wonderful bonus tracks.......2006-11-26

The alternate version of the album is a gem - more personal, intimate and quirky than the original.

Amongst the rest (ie the "bonus tracks") are 2 superb versions of Ocean, his best version of Satellie of Love, and the magnificent demo Love Makes You Feel Ten Feet Tall which contains elements of at least two later songs - have fun identifying them!

Who Loves the Sun?.......2006-07-31

I can't speak for everyone, but I for one, do.

I've never heard all of the Velvet Underground's albums, but from what I've been able to pick up, they were more depressing-sounding albums, with sombering looks at life - particularly drugs and sex.

This album on the other hand, stands out amongst the songs of sorrow with songs that sound to me as complete jubilation, the exception being 'I Found a Reason.' But starting out with Who Loves the Sun, a song that sounds as if it came out of a George Harrison song-writing session, starts off the album with a great beginning hook and glorious chorus lines that reaffirm that this album is quite different than their previous ones. The next, Sweet Jane, is quite possibly my favorite of the album, with pure joy seeping from the entire track, especially the third chorus. I'm assuming it's Lou Reed singing, and I doubt he's even sounded so exuberant ever since or before.

Rock and Roll seems like a direct extension off of Sweet Jane, and is just as 'rockin' as the two previous tracks. Probably one of the most simple tracks on the album, lyrical and instrumental, but still great. Cool It Down is probably my least favorite track and one I think really disrupts the flow of the album. I know there's not much there for description, but I really can't listen to it.

Things pick up again though with the gentle and quite beautiful New Age. A song that seems to be about new-found love with an older women. (I'm not entirely sure, the lyrics are kind of strange. But still a good tune.) Another thundering rocker with Head Held High, another kind of strange tune about keeping your spirits up.

I think it would be impossible for me to even try to describe Lonesome Cowboy Bill, since it seems so incredibly out of place with anything the Velvet Underground has done, albeit, a song, joyous in all senses, with a slight country-rock tinge to it, about a travelling rodeo cowboy... So I guess I did basically describe it. But it's definitely a stand out track.

I Found a Reason is probably the only depressing track on the album, which seems to be a song about a man or woman who diverted from attempting suicide because of his papa.

Rounding out the album are Train Around the Bend and Oh! Sweet Nuthin', which is probably my second favorite track on the album, and very melodic, slow paced, yet very spirited song that is a very fitting ending to a very great, high-spirits album. Thoroughly recommended to anyone. Especially those who love today's indie sound and wish to explore the beginnings of that sound, although I'm not saying this is the true beginning by any means.

Loaded with Hits... Integrity Intact Forever.......2006-05-08

Lou Reed did it..the survivor, new bandmates and studio musicians,a new age...total greatness, a 2 CD gift for the fans..the original album,the alternate album,early versions,full length versions, demos, early skeleton songs that appeared later on Lou's solo works with the demise of the Velvets, all in all not a note to be missed.. all loaded with a wonderful booklet, cover art appreciated by any NYC Subway junkie.
On this 4th offering, the band(now officially broken up) set out to show that they remained that tight Long Island Rock band of Lou(minus the drummer Mo and John Cale's replacement, Doug Yule singing lead on 3 great Reed compositions) showering a slew of tight songs showcasing many styles on the world fully knowing that this was the sort of album that all the commercial executives wanted the Velvets to make from the beginning..but it was a sad song and too late for that type of stardom.
Their fame was posthumous and always beyond category and comparison.Loaded was an album of hits completing a cycle for the band that began with the Nico album, culminating into a collection of topnotch song craft smacking of beautiful songs and FM staples, songs you can rock and dance to.
The story still requires their odds and sods collections Another View and VU and the live Robert Quine Tapes, the now 2 CD set Live At Max's and that extraordinary live 2 volume CD set 1969 recorded during this Loaded period.
You won't be disappointed in their box "Peel Slowly And See" neither.

A Masterpiece.......2006-04-21

Of all the VU albums, this is the most "pop" sounding and accessible. It also has, in my opinion, the definitive VU song;"Sweet Jane", which is inarguably, one of the most compelling rock songs ever written.This is quite simply a flawless classic that you should own, if for no other reason that you cannot claim that you have a classic rock collection without owning this album. As for this "fully loaded" version; dont hesistate to buy it. The extra songs and different versions are all gems and will open the door to an appreciation of VU other albums.

A HARD ROCKIN' GEM.......2007-05-26

ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FROM A GREAT BAND. THESE GUYS ROCK! STAND OUT TRACKS INCLUDE "NEVER ENOUGH","RIP AND TEAR" AND "THE BALLAD OF JAYNE" WHICH WAS AMAZINGLY A TOP 40 HIT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RECORD TO ANY ROCKER.

Definitive L.A. Guns album.......2007-05-17

THE BAND: Tracii Guns (guitar, sitar), Philip Lewis (vocals), Mick Cripps (guitar, piano), Kelly Nickels (bass, harmonic), Steve Riley (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1989) 14 tracks clocking in at approximately 54 minutes. Included with the disc is a 4-page foldout containing song titles/credits/times, song lyrics, 2 band photos, and thank you's. This is the band's 2nd album. The album features guest appearances by Cheap Trick members Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen. Label - Vertigo / Polygram Records.

COMMENTS: Hands down, "Cocked & Loaded" is L.A.Guns' most polished and complete record... period. 14 tracks of rocking sleazy big aqua-net induced hair glam. One of their biggest hits and perhaps their most radio friendly tune, "The Ballad Of Jayne", is here... along with minor hits "Never Enough" and "Rip And Tear". Other highlights include "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Sleazy Come Easy Go", "Malaria", and "17 Crash". First and foremost this is a guitar album - this is Tracii Guns' band - and it shows. Great melodies, crunchy rhythms and ripping solos. With "Cocked & Loaded", L.A.Guns quickly established themselves as a band to be reckoned with on the Los Angeles late 80's music scene... right up there with the ranks of Motley Crue, Skid Row, Bullet Boys, Warrant, White Lion, Cinderella, Winger and Poison. Years later L.A.Guns is still hanging around (with several more albums under their belt), but none matched the songwriting and playing of this one (4.5 stars).

rip n' tear.......2006-07-20

there is not a hint of the 'sophmore slump' anywhere near this album. if your the kinda person who likes to put in a cd and hear it from cover to cover, then look no further. considerably their best album to date, this beaut leaves no doubt that LAG was at the top of their game. if your ready for a full assault on your ear drums, buy it. purchase it used @ low price and you can't go wrong.

One of their greatest.......2006-02-07

This album is absolutley one of L.A. Guns greatest albums ever and was ver underrated, there is not one bad spot on this album from beginning to end. Phil Lewis's voice has never sounded better specially on Never Enoughs chorus, leaves me speechless that he can sing like that. this album, like I said was underrated even though it did go platinum, the only song people seem to remember is "The Ballad of Jayne" which is a great song, but in my opinion is not the best, this whole cd is memorable and shouldnt just be known for just one song "highly recommended"

AWESOME hair metal/hard rock - genre fans will LOVE this!.......2006-01-12

Even though L.A. Guns weren't deemed "as good" or weren't as popular as Guns 'n' Roses or AC/DC, they were still very very good (for a couple albums). Most people seem to laugh at the thought of hair metal, but for those who can look past these criticisms this is just great fun! Singer Phil Lewis is an excellent and very likable vocalist who, although he arguably isn't as great as AC/DC's, for example, still gets the job done. L.A. Guns aren't bothered with trying to be the most politically aware or thought-provoking group on the planet, so it's at least good that every song here makes for a great and energetic hard rock album (minus the slow-natured "The Ballad Of Jayne"). Every song is good or great, and, although none are necessarily memorable, they're all fun to listen to while you're playing it. The lyrics, like I said, aren't intelligent at all, but they're catchy and fun - in this genre that's half the battle. Musically it's pretty standard hard rock, but they deliver in terms of catchy, fun and energetic rock songs. The musicianship, though derivative, is still really really good. This may not be music that everyone will like, but if you love hair metal then "Cocked & Loaded" is one of the best albums you can buy! Highly recommended!

Inexcusable, especially from Dylan.......2007-02-08

Seriously, this rivals Self-Portrait and Planet Waves as his alltime worst. When Dylan's lyrics are weak, that robs all purpose of listening to the music. Guess what? They're mostly weak here (Drifting too Far from the Shore; Maybe Someday; Precious Memories; Under Your Spell). Guess what else? The tunes themselves are mostly weak: no memorable melodies, no virtuoso or even good (or even crappy, for that matter) performances, nothin'. And don't even get me started on that children's choir found on They Killed Him... baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad idea. Most of these songs are cut-cut-cut-rate love songs. The exception is Brownsville Girl. His lyrics are at their best. But those booming drums, backing vocals and horns are distracting. Would've been a great solo acoustic performance.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm a Dylan freak, or maybe it's the fact that I went in with few expectations due to other reviews on here, but I really enjoyed this album. I won't say it's a classic, or even great, but it's deffinitley an enjoyable album. Brownsville Girl is an interesting ballad and something of a precursor Highlands on Time out of mind. The other tracks aside from "They Killed Him" (which was merely bleh until the childrens choir came in and made it awful) were interesting and had a nice groove to them. In particular, "driftin' to far from the shore" is a fun song and could easily be an outtake from Empire Burlesque. Other than those three songs the others really aren't "notable" not because of lack of quality, but rather because they don't do anything to really warrant comments. Sure, the songwriting is far from his prime, but the music is pretty fun and nowhere near as bad as is said. Pick it up sometime if your'e curious to explore some of the lesser known Dylan.

certainly enjoyable.......2006-03-16

After reading reviews that this album and Down In the Groove are Dylan's worst albums, and still determined to collect all his albums, I find that this album is pretty enjoyable and a couple songs are my favorites. In my opinion, Dylan's worst albums are quality-wise at least as good as most other artists' best. There is just something about them. Also, they reflect the time and mood when they were made.

Dylan's worst....with a notable exception...great title, though..........2006-01-23

This is one of Dylan's worst albums (alongside Dylan and the Dead and Down in the Groove). Many of us Dylan fans like to argue which is worse, this one or Down in the Groove. This one is worse. A hodge podge of recording sessions hastily thrown together, it has a "let's get this f---er out and let the fans decide whether it's good or not" feel to it. There are only 2 songs that are really worth your attention. The first, "You Wanna Ramble", has a really good groove to it, but the second, Brownsville Girl, is a Dylan masterpiece. Brilliantly written (with Sam Shepard)and performed (with a great vocal by Dylan and the choir). It runs 11 minutes, and feels short, because it's so good. The song They Killed Him runs 4 minutes and feels longer than Gone With the Wind, which gives you an indication of how wretched the song really is. It does, however, have a great title, and the cover art is pretty good. Perhaps Dylan should have taken the best songs from this album and Down in the Groove, and made one album out of it. Extra Star for Brownsville Girl, Where was Tom Petty? Band of the Hand?.......2005-09-02

This record came out in the middle of my (approximately) five year "Dylan Absorption Phase" when I was a high school / college student. So I listened to this a lot even if it was pretty lame overall.

The meager highlights here include his lyrical collaboration with Sam Shepard, Brownsville Girl. A very long stream of consciousness reminiscence, the music behind the words is just okay but the lyrics make it pretty magical. This is a good one to listen to through headphones in the dark. Pretty funny that Brownsville Girl was included on Greatest Hits III because I can assure you, in no way was this a hit single. Just a great album track.

The really disappointing thing is that this came out right around the time Dylan was touring with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as his backing band and those were really rocking shows. TP co-wrote one song here (the pretty rockin' and overlooked "Got My Mind Made Up") and the Heartbreakers play on the record a little but to no avail, the results are fairly sterile and boring.

Interestingly, right around this time, The Heartbreakers backed Dylan on a completely forgotten soundtrack single called Band of the Hand from a forgotten action movie of the same name. Band of the Hand rocks like nobody's business and is probably my favorite Dylan song from the 80's. Why it wasn't included on this hodgepodge record is a mystery but perhaps a bigger mystery is why Dylan has never added it to one of his rarities collections like Bootleg Series 1-3.

This is total dross, to compare them to The Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly is an insult to both these bands.

If they came anywhere near Scotland and performed like this they would be flung off the top of Edinburgh Castle and then shot at with the one o'clock gun.

This CD was really awesome! Loch'd and Loaded is a great Real McKenzies album and has a cool name...yeah, I thought it was much better than Oot and Aboot.

Loch'd Loaded and Ready to Rock.......2004-05-11

Plainly put, a great CD. A great blend of traditional Scottish and modern punk style. I truly enjoy the blend of thoughtful lyrics with the pipes and metal. This is one of the CDs I will play before every Highland Game and St. Patricks Day! My favorite songs on the album are "Scots Around The World" and "Swords of a Thousand Men", these reinforce "The Blood is Strong".

Bagpipes and Guitars.......2004-03-25

If you like the more melodic 'Dropkick Murphys' songs and enjoy the combination of Bagpipes and Power Guitars, then look no further: This CD has all these elements : Great Sing-along choruses, high speed guitars and lots of Bagpipes. I actually like the vocals better than 'Flogging Molly', and even there is still a bit of room to improve on the songwriting in my opinion, I strongly recommend buying this album. It is just pure fun!

visiting some old friends.......2007-05-08

This is about what I expected. It can't replace the 2 albums I used to own, but it had the songs I wanted to hear most. The band I was in back in high school(37-38 yrs. ago)used to play "Good Natured Emma" and "Migration" so I'm particularly happy to have those again. I really wasn't interested in and don't really care for the stuff from the first album, but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the rest of the CD. Not bad for a compilation.

Not definitive but a good overview..........2006-12-24

Let me first state my bias: "Journey to the Center of the Mind" is the song that convinced me I needed to become a guitarist, so it's the most important song in my own personal history...a genuinely life-changing thing, so it should come as no surprise that the Amboy Dukes were my favorite band in that time period. The music on this CD is all drawn from the three albums (and one single) released on the Mainstream Records label (when the band was still known only as The Amboy Dukes, without Ted Nugent's name being featured) and purports to be the best of that time period. For my money, the stuff from the first album is interesting from an historical perspective but is definitely the weakest material presented here (tracks 2-6). Tracks 1 and 7-12 come from their second album ("Journey...") featuring a stronger line-up of musicians and a lot of their best stuff (one glaring omission from this album is the song "Surrender to Your Kings": one of the RIPPING-EST Dukes tunes ever, it SHOULD have been included). Track 13 ("You Talk Sunshine...") was their attempt at a follow-up to their hit "Journey...". It's a decent song in-and-of-itself, and I'm glad it's included here, but if you listen to "Journey..." and then listen to "You Talk Sunshine...", it's almost hilarious to hear how these guys practically broke their own necks trying to re-create "Journey..." and score another hit. I've never heard a more blatant example of self-plagiarization. Tracks 14-18 come from the "Migration" album, and the compilers managed to get all the best stuff from this album. HOWEVER (and this is my biggest bitch with this collection), someone decided to re-edit the great "Prodigal Man" to disastrous effect. In the original recording, the solo section starts off with a beatiful drum solo by Dave Palmer; bassist Greg Arama then joins him and takes a bass solo that 99% of all rock bassists would never have been able to accomplish; those two are then joined by Andy Solomon playing some of his exquisite Jimmy Smith-inspired jazz organ stuff; and finally Ted Nugent comes in with one of his most blistering guitar solos ever. This section has a very organic flow to it that just builds and builds and is one of the Amboy Dukes finest moments. So some MORON comes along and shuffles the solos around and completely destroys the flow! This might not be so noticeable to someone who's never heard the song before, but to someone familiar with the original, it's absolutely JARRING.

In closing, I think it's important to note that, although Ted Nugent is featured prominently in these recordings (and rightly so: he WAS a brilliant and unique guitarist and the evidence here is ample), the Amboy Dukes were a great BAND, and Ted WASN'T the only virtuoso therein. If you're a fan of the arena-rock Nuge of the late 70's, you might not be too interested in this music, but if you want to hear a great and largely-overlooked progressive rock band from the late 60's, this collection is well-worth checking out.

Strange bedfellows.......2005-08-19

Ted Nugent and Steve Farmer had to be one of the strangest combos in rock history, and it still amazes me how well they sounded together. Nugent's early guitar work was distinctive, fluid and original, more refined than much of his later stuff. Farmer's songwriting antics were just as original, although his attempts at psychedelic "deepness" were sometimes hilarious. (And he hasn't changed much, check out his "Journey to the Darkside...")

Nugent claims he didn't know the songs were about drugs... does anyone believe that for a minute?

This disc is missing some notable songs, including "Surrender To Your Kings" and "Inside the Outside". Also, for no good reason, this version of "Prodigal Man" has been remixed, with instrumental passages out of their original order. Who would do such a thing?

But this music is definitely worth hearing... the Amboy Dukes showed WAY more imagination and talent than your average 60's American garage band.

No Missionary Mary?.......2004-12-12

This is a very good compilation of the original Amboy Dukes! The sound quality is excellent and nice packaging as well with the Mainstream logo present on this Sony release. Most of the tunes on their 67' debut and their 68' release "Journey To The Center Of The Mind" are awesome garage/psych rock and are included here on Loaded For Bear. Songs NOT included that I would loved to have had on this CD are: "I Feel Free" and "Missionary Mary". I mainly bought this because it contains "Colors" and "Why Is A Carrot More Orange Than An Orange?" which are omitted on other Dukes' compilations for some reason. Two examples of fine ACID ROCK. Ted Nugent's guitar playing during the Dukes' era is among the best of any guitar player in the country. His conviction and execution is almost flawless and the flaws lend very well too. Check out their 3rd album Migration (CD on Repertoire), Nugent is fantastic. I love the Amboy Dukes' first 4 LP's on Mainstream, but sadly, Mainstream producer Bob Shad did very little to promote the groups on the label. He eventually dropped every group from the label, even sold away Janis and Big Brother to Columbia in 68' for a hefty sum. Consequently, most of the rock groups that released a full length album on the label commands high prices and are sought after collector's items! Mainstream signed some other great psychedelic bands, most notable: Big Brother and The Holding Co., The Tangerine Zoo, The Jellybean Bandits (See my Amazon review of this classic), The Art Of Lovin' and The Stone Circus. My favorite Amboy Dukes' tune without a doubt is D.O.P.E. This music was made to be played LOUD!

Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes.......2003-08-10

Great Heavy Metal music on this compilation from Ted Nugent's self-contained band, the Amboy Dukes. "Journey Through the Center of the Mind" is one of the best songs ever made and "Baby Please Don't Go" is a great cover also done by the band Them with Van Morrison. The rest of the CD has great music that is and was ahead of its time before the existence of Led Zeppelin and the rest of Heavy Metal. Great music from a great musician, Ted Nugent, because it is worth the price of admission.

Just when you thought you could finally say goodbye to Lionel Richie's "Hello," this and other vintage pop comes roaring up in Herbie: Fully Loaded, the soundtrack to the Lindsay Lohan flick in which the world-famous Volkswagen bug meets NASCAR. Thematically speaking, the CD is perfect; just as the movie teams a modern-day star with a Disney classic, the album offers up a gaggle of pretty young things (The Donnas , Josh Gracin, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray fame, Lohan herself) to belt out classic rock. Herbie the soundtrack is no critic's darling, but it's not without its highlights. McGrath does a good job with the sunny Beach Boys hit "Getcha Back," while Ingram Hill's rendition of "More Than a Feeling" may prove irresistible--that is if your heart is open to super hits of the `70s. INGRAM HILL - AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-01

Not typically being one who likes cover songs, Ingram Hill does an AMAZING job with "More Than a Feeling"!!! Already a fervent IH fan, I am still amazed by Justin's ability to hit notes I thought only Brad Delp could master. As for the rest of the CD, I think Aly and AJ did a fine job with "Walking on Sunshine" as did Josh Kelly with "You are the Woman". Didn't care for Moony Suzuki's rendition of "Born to be Wild", but then, I didn't get all excited over the original one to begin with.

I love this book because it's non-fiction.It was really,really cool because it was about a car that had feelings and he could understand what you said.I like books that have funny things or mysteries.All though it was preety gross when Keven kissed Maggie.And it was funny when Trip Murphy got really mad and he said that Herbie blinked at him and the cops thought that he was crazy.I really enjoyed the laghter and the comedy and I hope you do too.I really wish that I could be a great writer like the author.

Very fun wake-the-kids-up CD.......2005-11-17

Magic IS performed by the original 70's artist.
"Hello" by Lionel Richie is a remake, but still Lionel Richie.
"More Than a Feeling" by Ingram Hill - incredible remake and I will be researching to see if they used the original guitar tracks from Boston.

I love Lindsay's "First", and I get to beebop around the house in the morning singing along to the same songs as my children - difference being that *I* know all the words. "Born to Be Wild" and "Workin' for the Weekend", questionable but tolerable knowing that a better song is coming up.

I loved Herbie as a child (bought my own '76 Bug 4 years ago and yes, I know Herbie's a '66) and I couldn't help myself from being overcome with "GO HERBIE!" during the movie. The movie if a heck of a lot of fun, Lindsay Lohan is too dang cute, music is much better (even the remakes) this time around, and since when has Disney gone for "critically acclaimed" movies? Sit back, enjoy the movie and then enjoy the music on the soundtrack. It's a nice change from the movies that you can't watch with the children around because it's fun - and it's actually a movie/soundtrack that adults know more about the history than your kids.

A little disappointing, but it's okay........2005-11-02

This CD is okay. Not good, not bad. Overall, just okay. The good thing of this CD is the songs are quite rocky because it should suit the racing movie. The bad thing is on track 12. You know, they shouldn't put an old song in the movie, right? I believe so. So, this is the thing which cost the whole CD not perfect.

Great Album.......2007-04-19

Since I first heard this band I have been in love with their music. Smarter than Taking Back Sunday and with a slightly more indie sound. It seems that TBS actually takes a lot from this band because I find similarities between the two bands. I personally prefer Pollyanna but I still like this cd.

One of the best pop-punk records period(.).......2005-11-19

I know most refer back to bands like New FOund Glory and Blink 182 when talking about pop-punk. Believe it or not there are those rare pop-punk bands that conjure mature material that sounds great, and Northstar (unfortunately) was one of these bands. Is This Thing Loaded has great intellegent lyrics believe it or not, and the poppy melodies that would keep the most avid Drive Thru Records fan singing to themselves. I don't want to sound even more like an condescending elitist (to each his own), but really try this record out, lament their breaking up. My personal favorites are Rigged and Ready, Broken Parachute, and Taker Not Giver...Their second record was pretty good too.

Northstar - Is This Thing Loaded.......2005-01-11

Northstar have released a ten (10) track public display of Nick Torres' insides. "Is This Thing Loaded," exhibits the most lyrical competence of any rock record in 2002. By far the strongest disc Triple Crown stamped their approval on that year. The riffs are raw and erosive sounding; yet Torres' effortless vocal delivery meshes impeccably with the blistering music. These down South rockers have turned a lot of heads with their debut triumph, and rightfully so. Northstar shows promise for what lies ahead in the Rock music scene. Check Out "Rigged and Ready," and "Taker Not A Giver."

northstar is one of the greatest bands ever. all of you complaining about the recording quality are ignorant as hell. they re-released the album and anyway the intros or whatever you guys are complaining about echo a little bit and sound kind of far away on purpose. the lyrics are amazing. nick torres is my idol, not only is he a incredible singer but he play guitar while he's doing it. the drums are phenomenal especially the outro to broken parachute (track 3). the lyrics and songwriting are intricate and amazing. not a single bad track on the album. my favorite cd of alltime.

Taking Back Sunday fans must buy this cd! Northstar sounds a lot like them but have their own uniqueness. They are awesome

Amazing dance disc set.......2007-05-02

I don't usually buy DJ or dance mixes, but after hearing much of Freemasons stuff online and in the clubs, I thought I'd give this one a try. I tried looking at downloading it from iTunes, but they don't have the whole album and the mixes I wanted. Suffice it to say, I've been listening to these discs for the last 4 days straight, over and over, and the tracks, while addictive at first, just get better and better. If you are a fan of dance music, then this is the album for you!

Brilliant Import Dance CD!.......2007-04-28

This is bar none one of the best dance compilations I have ever heard. As another reviewer put it so succinctly, it's the "bomb" and never lets up on the Hi-NRG until the last cut on the second cd which is a slowed down version of Siedah Garrett's "Rain Down Love" (After Hours Mix).

Freemasons have an incredible talent in melding some of the best of the 70's, 80's and 90's dance sounds with new r & b and pop songs that create mixes which sound totally fresh and contemporary. For the most part the vocals are very strong and the result is a blend that's very danceable, but still melodic which makes this an enjoyable listening experience as well. The flow and transition between cuts is seamless and I believe this is due to the fact that all of the songs have either been produced or remixed by the same production team, so the "vision" is consistent throughout.

The extra dollars for this import are well worth it as you will find some of the biggest hits from the dance floor over the last couple of years all in one place here including Beyonce's "Deja Vu", Luther Vandross' "Shine" and Freemason's "Love On My Mind" with vocals by Amanda Wilson, an excellent reworking of Jackie Moore's classic "This Time Baby" among many, many others. I recommend this release very highly. Put it on at your next party and everyone will be up on the dance floor asking what you're playing.

Easily the album of the year..........2007-03-23

I am a long-time fan of dance music, but had not heard of the Freemasons until tuning into XM radio 2 years ago. Their tracks and remixes are frequently played on the dance stations, and I liked every single one of them, so I decided to purchase their entire CD (a rare occurance for me).

Despite some very minor dissapointments, I could not have been happier with my purchase. Every single track on these two discs is a fantastic, heart-pumping catchy wonderfully-mixed piece of music.

As with all artists there are similarities between tracks - but in the case of the Freemasons, this is a great thing. Each track blends wonderfully with the previous one, making sure you never miss a beat.

I am partial to their remixes, but the original tracks are just as fantastic. My absolute favorite tracks include:

*Atlantic+Pacific (A brilliantly arranged instrumental - Not sure why these are split into two tracks, they're essentially one long song)
*Mesmirized (A remix of a rather boring Faith Evans song, which turns it into an anything-but-boring dance anthem)
*Nothing But a Heartache (A Freemasons original - the catchy hook gets stuck in your head for days)
*I Wasn't Kidding (A remix of which I've never heard the original, but after hearing this version, I don't think I'd care to hear any other version. The funky guitar riff makes this one to listen to over and over again)
*Love on My Mind (Another Freemasons original - One of the most-played tracks on dance radio, with good reason)
*Boy Meets Girl (I'm not sure if this is the Freemasons or not, the disc does not specify...It lists the artist as Walken. Nonetheless, it's a great "Freemasons-esque" track that will be sure to get you dancing)

Only criticisms:
*The mix of Shine by Luther Vandross (one of my favorites) they included here is too fast for my tastes. It really takes away from an otherwise brilliant remix
*Ring the Alarm by Beyoncè is not included. If you can purchase it separately I suggest you do so...It (like Mesmirized) takes a rather bland R&B song and injects new life into it. It really is a top-notch track that is sadly missing from this collection
*Rain Down Love, while decent, is not as strong a track as the others. There are two versions included on this CD - neither one particullarly shines. If you can find the mix that blends it with Boy Meets Girl, snatch it up.

All-in-all, if you have ANY interest whatsoever in dance music, do not hesitate for a second and purchase Shake Down by the Freemasons. You won't be dissapointed....don't let the price scare you away, it's worth it and thensome.

I'm glad that legal download iStore place hawks only the crippled version of this 2 disc set (it contains none of the remixed songs, only the Freemasons' original scores, which alone are formidable...). But I digressed. The iStore compelled me to find the FULL album, and here it is on trusty reliable amazon.com!!

These Freemasons cats know how to do electronic music. Their original scores re-invigorate and renew a music genre that has become dull over the years. With aplomb, may I add.

And their remixes of R&B songs do them real justice. The original R&B songs have merit and they choose artists with phenomenal voices (I dig R&B too), but the remixes add a new, totally different, and energetic (Red Bull-worthy? :-D ) dimension that makes the purchase of this CD set worth every penny, if not twice as much as far as I'm concerned. How one can successfully turn a smooth, suave R&B song into a beat-driven rave-worthy dance track is beyond me, but they've done it... (their remix of Faith Evans' "Mesmerized" is an all-time fave...)

It's all truly great stuff.

Bomb!!!.......2007-02-03

2 discs of absolutely peek time, floor destroying, anthems. 28 tracks flawlessly mixed over 2 CDs. Featuring Freemason's best of the best remix's & self produced tracks. Remixing some huge names in both R&B & Dance Music such as Beyonce, Fatboy Slim, Faith Evans, Blaze & Luthor Vandross to name only a few. I was a little skeptical at first that this would be a bunch of cheez'd up Diva house, & while there are plenty of vocal tracks here, nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone looking for a pumpin' house album this is it, although a little spendy with a $30 price tag this CD is absolutely worth every penny.

Sound Loaded, Ricky Martin's follow-up to his self-titled 1999 triumph, is a marvel as much of cross-country technological wizardry as of a multicultural pop sensibility. "She Bangs," its first single, was made in seven locations from Miami to Hollywood; all the work results in a gratifying everything-and-the-kitchen-sink uptempo extravaganza. (The details include a sampled nod to Fishbone, an apparent influence on 1999's "Livin' la Vida Loca," and the delightful malapropism "She looks like a flower but she stings like a bee.") If the rest of the disc never quite matches that high, neither does its quality sink much; if anything, Sound Loaded may be a bigger cut-for-cut success than its predecessor. The winners are mostly similar dancefloor rockers, but the ballads generally skirt the edge of treacle. Sound Re-Done.......2007-02-15

Ricky Martin's eponymous debut album had sold really good in 1999 and there was alot of hype around him at the time. The best way to follow up to the great success was to release a follow up as soon as possible, and that's what the record company did. Already one year later in 2000 came the sophmore effort called "Sound Loaded" which is an perfect name cause that is basically what it is. More of the same that worked one year ago. Martin was still popular in 2000, mind you. However it sounds like alot of the songs were released in a very fast pace in order to content the audience that wasnted more of his Latin-Pop. "Sha Bangs" the big hit was just as corny as "Shake Your Bon Bon" and sounds quite simular aswell. "Loaded" also follow that trend, a latin-pop sound made for an english audience but neither good lyrics or that creative punch that it desperately would have needed. The best song of this album is a ballad in my oppionion. "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" between Ricky and Christina Aguilera. Also a hit single. Those three were the only singles released, which may be strange considering there were countless of sinle releases from his debut album. The truth is that there aren't that many potential single hits on this album. Maybe "Come to Me" a decent midtempo but other then that there are few memorable songs here. Diane Warren also wrote a song for this album "The Truth" a powerballad which is ok. Then we have countless of Latin-Pop songs that are quite forgettable actually. In retrospect it feels obvious that this project was rushed and could have been better, but it doesn't take a genius to realize that the record company wanted to milk out as much money in his music as possible. "Sound Reloaded" is alright, but it doesn't offer much more then the three hit singles. If you like Ricky, check his debut album or his 2005 album "Life" instead.

Ricky's sophomore English album (sixth solo album overall) picks up where "Ricky Martin 1999" left off. The thick, slick production with aggressive beats work well with Ricky's voice. Songs like "Amor", "Saint Tropez", "Cambia La Piel" and "Jezabel" are where things gel together the best and he sounds assured. There are a few dull spots such as "If You Ever Saw Her" and the original version of "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely." It's a mystery why the massive hit duet version with Christina Aguliera wasn't included. It should have been included. Luckily, he projects enough charisma to make those moments listenable. Aside from that, there are enough good moments to please most Pop fans. The other two ballads "Come To Me" & "The Touch" revel Ricky's more sensitive side and are quite pleasant. This album is well suited to fans of Dance-Pop, Latin-Pop and Club/Dance. This album would not appeal to you if you don't like those styles.

Bummer---Barely Average.......2005-10-14

Well, I gave this CD its first spin after a two year absence of ANY Ricky Martin music in my life. After his 1999 self-title CD, I pretty much went head over heals for Ricky. When this CD came out in November of 2000 I was really excited. Upon first listening to it, I thought it was better than his 99 CD but no where near as good as Vuelve. It would take 2003's Almas Del Silencio to really wash way the bad taste in my mouth that this CD leaves.

As several folks know, Ricky was under pressure from his managers, producers and the record company to deliver a follow up to his 1999 CD. Sound Loaded is what we got. This album was obviously rushed and it sounds like it. Weak lyrics and over saturation of musical gimicks is utilzed to keep the 'Livin La Vida Loca' fever burning. Ricky's voice just sounds tired and worn out. It's easy to tell that he was way over due for a vacation.

There are a few standout tracks on the disc. 'Amor' by far out shines every song by a mile. Had Sound Loaded had more great tunes like 'Amor' on it, the CD would have been a hit. As it is, the CD is mediocre at best.

I am a fan of Ricky but not this album. I prefer him singing spanish instead of English. The only good part about the album is the salsa sounds.
