      Review by Jonathan Widran
It's always so inspiring when American-based musicians mine the riches of their exotic heritage, and this five-piece New York band offers a stirring invitation to explore the vast rhythmic riches of its Afro-Haitian roots. While listeners are enjoying what on the surface sounds like an appealing mix of classical, jazz, gospel, and funk influences, the 12 multifaceted tracks also aim to teach lessons about various traditional Haitian folkloric drum rhythms (all stunningly played by Markus Schwartz). The set is bookended with two tracks using the Rara rhythm, the joyous and frenetic "Caravan" (a showcase for the feisty interplay between guitarist Eddy Bourjolly and pianist Welmyr Jean-Pierre) and "Moving On," which floats an elegant melody atop speedy percussion patterns. Other irresistible native rhythms include Nago (the hypnotic "Sa te Bel"), Mayi ("Pen Mayi"), Ibo (the sassy Latin-flavored "Mirelle"), Kontradans (the moody, laid-back "African Queen," featuring singalong native vocal textures), Kongo ("Limye"), and Petwo (a very tropical "The Journey"). Schwartz's interesting liner notes add some context to the tunes, whose deep textures take a few run-throughs to fully appreciate. Those who are fascinated might be prompted to do more research into what makes jazz tick in Haiti. But for those just out for a nice listen, perhaps legendary jazz bassist Jimmy Haslip's take is quite enough: "beautiful music!"

3 out of 5 stars Ten Years Later it Looses Musical Impact.......2003-05-03

My first inclination in reviewing this work is to quip: How do you win fame and repeat performances of a work? Write a piece that is a pastiche of 19th and 20th century techniques, dedicate the work to the victims of some politically or patriotically correct tragedy and then watch the prizes and commissions role in. But that's cynical...Corigliano's Symphony No. 1 (Of Rage and Remembrance) is undoubtedly deeply felt. After all, the composer has a strong personal connection to his subject, as he is a gay composer who lived through the worst of the AIDS crisis in a city that got much of the brunt of that terrible disease. But for better or worse (probably worse) the public seems to think the crisis is over and has turned attention to other disasters, and Corigliano's work now has to be judged as a symphony, not as a personal or political statement. I'm afraid to say the results are mixed.

Corligliano is one of the leading lights, along with Druckman and Del Tredici, of the neo-romantic movement in contemporary music. Though this movement has become a catch all for all sorts of pastiche-based composing, its original impetus was to take techniques languages from the avant-garde of the 50s and 60s and marry those to a romantic sensibility and a generally tonal framework. In the best works of this style, (Druckman's Viola Concerto, Corligliano's Clarinet Concerto, Rouse's Symphony No. 1) this created a vital new style in the 70s and 80s...but has quickly lost steam. Corigliano's symphony shows some of that leaching away of style.

Each of the first three movements is a musical portrait of a friend of the composer's who died during the crisis. The first movement is dedicated to a pianist friend of the composer. It contrasts violent orchestral outburst that are reminiscent of Penderecki, with a collage-based technique which sets an offstage piano playing the Albeniz Tango against lyrical but contrasted lines in the strings and winds. The effect is rather like Ives. The second movement is an orchestral tarantella and a portrait of another one of the composer's friends, a friend who died in full-blown AIDS-related dementia. The orchestration is quite brilliant, again harkening to Berio, Penderecki and Ives, and yet to my ear, the actual material of the movement is impoverished and structurally it just doesn't hang together. Perhaps that's the point, but a work should be able to stand apart from its program, and I don't believe this movement does. The third movement is a chaconne for cello, based on an improvisation the composer did with a cellist friend, who also died. This is the heart of the work, the melody is deeply moving and each variation goes on to portray another of the composer's lost friends. For my money this is the single reason to buy the CD. The final movement is a collage of the material from the first three movements gradually dying away.

The work has it's moments, especially the third movement, but on the whole I find that there is a bit too much bombast and straining for effect. Corigliano isn't ready to let his material just be, but rather tries to wrench the most emotion out of it. One of the great secrets of the Big Romantics was the balance between restraint and release. Even in Mahler's biggest works, the full orchestral climaxes are few and most of the writing is economical in the extreme. Corigliano seems to want to let his orchestra wail at every opportunity, often when it is not warranted. This is particularly a problem in the second movement, but is shared even in the chaconne.

This recording was the first, and was recorded by the commissioning orchestra, so one must assume that the recording is pretty definitive. The CSO sounds wonderful and Barenboim seems pretty much in control of the work, though perhaps too blasting in the loud sections. This may help create the impression of a schizoid piece that the work gives.

In conclusion, I expect my review of this work to be controversial. The subject is still fresh and painful for many people, myself included. And I have no doubt that Corigliano was completely sincere in this work. But at least to me, his sincere emotion overwhelms his means of expression.

      4 out of 5 stars Powerful Music.......2002-04-03

This is an emotional and powerful recording of an emotional and powerful work. From this recording, one gets a sense of the full scope of this work, from its most intimate chamber-music-like moments to its most bombastic, expansive, quadruple-forte fury(how do I know? I've performed this piece). John Corigliano demonstrates to that handled properly, writing for a full symphony orchestra is a supremely expressive and satisfying way to constructively deal with one's feelings of loss, conflict, and anger. It would be exceedingly difficult to conceive of a more emotionally potent piece of music.

That being said, this performance is just a bit sloppy. At the very beginning, the exposed string glissandi are obviously not well synchronized. It seems like it would have been a small matter for Barenboim and the CSO to remedy this, but there it is. Once you get past this glitch, this is a worthy performance.

4 out of 5 stars Still great, but Slatkin's is better.......2000-06-29

Don't get me wrong, this is still an amazing performance and a very important recording, the premiere recording of a work that took guts to write and just as much guts to program. That being said, I prefer the second version of the piece, recorded by the St. Louis Symphony with Leonard Slatkin. Slatkin's reading is much tighter in some of the more rhythmic sections, but he still gives the music its proper breadth and loses none of the work's epic power. If you like more of a big Mahler-type-so-big-it-barely-holds-together sound, you might prefer this recording. Either way, buy one version (or both!) of this very important piece.

      4 out of 5 stars Ronald Reagan's Requiem.......2000-04-11

A cathartic piece if I ever heard one. Very difficult to endure given its high emotional content (which is why I'm giving it 4 rather than 5 stars). Demanding on the listener in every way. Brilliant, certainly. Shocking to some; but then the AIDS crisis which is at the center of this Symphony's vision is equally shocking. This is the music that should be played at Ronald Reagan's funeral.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful modern work.......2000-01-07

A feather in the cap for the CSO for being given the opportunity to premiere a symphony that should go down as one of the most important works of the late 20th Century. The music dense and powerful, yet it should be considered accessible to both the modern and romantic ear. Its four movements are drenched in intense emotion, from the kinetic tension of the first movement, and the halliciatory and schizophrentic dance of the second, to the haunting piano being played offstage in the finale, this music will chill your spine as it intrigues your mind.

I saw these guys perform at the Dinkytowner in Minneapolis. They put on a very entertaining show. And like most independent acts I see live, I bought the album. Needless to say, I was very impressed. The lyrical content brought forth by Mad Son and Big Jess are definitely on the forefront. Their flows are pretty easy to follow, but aren't dampened in spirit. The lyrics are often times thought provoking, and comfortable in presentation. These guys don't sound angry or preachy, but instead convey positivity.

Although I like Mad Son's flows, Big Jess is the better of the two. He has more mic presence and a more unique voice, making his rhymes standout a bit more. I like the production; but it left me wanting more. I am a big fan of symphony, piano and orchestra in my hip-hop music, but more often than not, the sample gets repeated throughout the song. This is the case with other MCs, such as Immortal Technique. Most of his music contains minimal string arrangements a lot like this album. But Immortal Technique makes up for it with a very dominate mic presence. Unknown Prophets do it pretty well; but not many can hold a candle to Immortal Technique when it comes to raw, hardcore talent on the mic. Nevertheless, the beats on this album are entertaining and unique among many underground hip-hoppers.

The collaborative efforts don't shine as much as you would think. Slug probably has the best drop on "Never," the last cut on the album. Brother Ali, one of my favorites, doesn't get a very good part at all on "Without My Existence," just the chorus, it's a cool song though. DJ Abilities helps out the production a bit on "The Wrong Route," making it a standout track. Another one of my pick would be "Take it There". Overall, the album is solid from start to finish, although I like the second half a bit more.

These guys seem to be a very ambitious pair in the underground rap circuit. With a little help on the production and engineering end of things, these guys would be capable of so much more. This is just the first of a string of great albums from the Unknown Prophets.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is worth 6 Stars.......2004-05-03

Yo if you dont have this CD then your NUTS. It's impossible to find people that DONT like this cd. I mean non rap fans can even appreciate this for its positivity and melody. They use a good variety fo instruments for their beats, and it results in a masterpiece. If you want to hear a couple songs before you buy the cd, definetly check out songs 8 Take it There and 17 Never feat. Slug. These two songs stand out and are possibly the best two songs I have heard in a long time.

        4 out of 5 stars Chilling.......2004-03-18

A Great LP from this Minneapolis group, they're rhymes are so good and they're flow is off the scale. The topics they spit about are personal yet almost educational in the way they say them. I have only heard a few of they're songs (Human, Never Feat. Slug, 4 The Kids and The Wrong Route) AS Roscoe P has said already 4 The Kidz and never are songs that stand out, but Human is a chillingly good song about faith worship and sin. All round top class hip hop, a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars What a debut should be.......2004-02-19

This is the debut for the Unknown Prophets. And it strongly competes with the other Minneapolis based Hip Hop groups like Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Eyedea and Abilities, and Oddjobs. I would have to say that out of all of the formentioned groups World Premier is the best debut album. The thing that you first notice about the UP's that sets them apart is thire rhyme topics. Their songs are positive and constructive yet still true quality Hip Hop. Track #4 The Wrong Route is a perfect example. It basically talks about two kids who made the wrong choices in there life and everything ends up falling apart. "he went from ripped jeans to mad cream, traded all his nightmares for the pleasent dreams". Track #13 4 The Kids talks about how we need to be wise about how we act and influence children. Then theres the last song on the CD Track #17 Never ft. Slug. The song talks about how the Up's might never make it big but its ok because they are doing something they love and they are giving it there all; and you can really feel it. Nothing on this CD sounds contrived or fake. This is what sets them apart from any other group I have ever heard. Be aware, their style is not similar to Atmosphere or Brother Ali so if you are expecting that you might be dissapointed. If you can approach this CD knowing that then you will love it.

        5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-11-14

I got this CD from a friend in Minn. and it is superb underground hip-hop almost all of the tracks are great. These guys are a lot like slug a.k.a. atmosphere and they even have a song on this cd with him. GREAT cd. would recomend for anyone who somewhat likes underground Hip-Hop.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Know your info before you review..........2005-04-19

To the other person who reviewd this... do your research. Crystal Kay is fluent in English (she's also a U.S. citizen) and Japanese, and she did not write the lyrics for Can't be Stopped~TIL THE SUN COMES UP~, so that's why the lyrics may seem choppy. That's not Crystal's fault.

This is not a good album to be introduced to if you want to start listening to Crystal. Her second (637-always & forever-) and third (almost seventeen) Japanese albums would probably be a better choice (if you can get your hands on them). They have more styles to choose from: pop, dance, folk, acoustic rock, R&B, hip-hop, etc.

Anyway, here's a better review of NATURAL.

            01. Can't be Stopped~TIL THE SUN COMES UP~
This version is available on the Japanese single for the original Can't be Stopped. The lyrics are pretty shallow and feel rushed, but the production team (OCTOPUSSY) manage to save the song with a great sugar shine dance beat appropriate of Europop. It's a fun song. And Crystal's voice does not sound bad here at all.

            02. Boyfriend~What Makes Me Fall in Love~
This is originally a Gladys Knight song (Do You Know What Makes Me Fall In Love?), but it was remixed, given Japanese lyrics, and put on Crystal's third Japanese album, almost seventeen. This English version takes the lyrics from Gladys' version (and yes, the original songwriters are credited so don't call Crystal a thief), and the melody is derived from the single mix of Boyfriend-part II- (released after almost seventeen). But I will say that Crystal's remake is far better than the original, which just didn't match Gladys' age or style.

            03. Time After Time
Everyone knows this song, and is probably tired of all the covers. Luckily, Crystal's cover is a few years older and better than most of the others out there (m-flo's LISA's version sucks). Her youthful voice shines on an '80s classic.

            04. Make Me Whole
Another cover. Amel Larrieux wrote this. It's a gorgeous ballad with beautiful (spiritual) lyrics about love. Crystal's vocals come through even if they're not as good as Amel's.

            05. Good Morning Sue
A very short Yoko Kanno (of Maaya Sakamoto and anime fame) song from Crystal's third single, Komichi no Hana. The melody is simple, and the lyrics are as well. Feels more like an interlude.

            06. Love of A Lifetime
The girl group Honeyz performed this originally. It's a good love song with a slightly more mature feel to it when compared to Honeyz's version.

            07. I'M NOT ALONE
The Japanese version (on 4REAL) is better, but this one isn't awful. It's a radio friendly, pop-R&B ballad that can get a little repetitive in this chorus. Still a great song.

            08. Couldn't Care Less
Unsure if this a Crystal original, but No Angels and Shawn Desman feature it on their albums, too. Good lyrics, vocals and composition.

            09. OVER THE RAINBOW
Blah cover. Skip it. No one should cover this.

            10. FLY AWAY
This is the coupling track on Crystal's debut single Eternal Memories. It sounds like a kid's song, but it's good. Inspirational lyrics, and it gets stuck in your head.

            11. Liberty
Wow, a lot of covers. This one was originally by Masayuki Suzuki, and was in English. Not bad, but not the best here.

            12. No More Blue Christmas
Natalie Cole did the original, and her voice is really different from Kay's. Nice song that Crystal performed for Christmas in Japan almost two years ago. It's a good background song for the holidays.

3 out of 5 stars OK,..., But her Japanese Albums are Betta........2004-09-09
