What you see is rarely what you get with Jimmy Buffett. While he may contend that he is the king of slackers, a modern day Dean Martin whipping up fizzy rum drinks under the palm trees in a silk Hawaiian shirt, this best-selling author and raconteur is actually the thinking man's party animal. His deceptively breezy lyrics and lazy charm belie a shrewd social commentator and a man not at peace with his world or his own mortality--taking well-aimed potshots at everything from cell phone culture to ancient Greek history to the threat of terrorism, as on the sharply ironic "Party at the End of the World." But having said that, all the unrest exhibited in these 14 songs makes for a far more interesting album than he's made in over two decades. Reflective, unstinting, and often nostalgic, the musician changes the tempo and the subject matter, swapping his usual languid island exhortations of alcohol and brief bikini tops for the fascinating emotional ambiguity of "Whoop De Doo," or the simple charm of "Nothing but a Breeze," which seems so autobiographical it's hard to believe that Buffett didn't write it. But the standout track is his chilling cover of Mary Gauthier's "Wheel Inside the Wheel," revealing exactly what kind of demons have been residing under the singer's ever-present baseball cap. --Jaan Uhelszki

Another one of Jimmy's musical adventure that was enjoyed by this fan. Not my ultimate favorite of his CD's, but much enjoyed and will provide continued times of fun and memories.

I am not a fair reviewer because I love everything about Jimmy. However, I will say, that the title was misleading to me. All of the music is good, I just did not fall in love with it the first listen through, it took me two plays. That is not normal for me and Jimmy. Anyway, this is good cd, worth buying, even for a non-collector.

Summer Year 'Round.......2007-07-19

We are big Buffet fans. You can tell the songs that he wrote and some he did not do not quite have the same "feel". Over all we are really enjoying the CD. Living in the north, it allows us to have a sense of summer year 'round when you put on a Buffet CD.

Not My Favorite..........2007-07-16

...But this compilation passes the Buffett Fan Test. It is a good mix of new and old. I am waiting for the singer-songwriter to fully come back to some of his best works. Some of Buffett's lesser known albums are far better than this and I hope he soon returns to that style. It seems like a journey that started with Barometer Soup and just hasn't come back home yet. Still, for the true fan, it does deliver. Not my favortire, but a worthy addition to a complete collection.

Best Buffett CD in a Decade!!.......2007-06-29

After the commercially successful (but disappointing to me) "License To Chill" I was afraid Jimmy may continue down the "generic, glossed up country" road. I wasn't all that excited about this CD coming out due to that reasaon but to my surprise he has released his best and most consistent CD since "Banana Wind". Alot of good stuff on here including some excellent cover tunes ("Weather With You", "Nothing But a Breeze", "Whoop De Do"). "Bama Breeze" has a country feel to it but the CD never crosses into the "mainstream Nashville" sound that "License" did. Even my wife who isn't a Buffett fan loves "Weather With You". Excellent cover of the Crowded House tune. If you are like me and didn't care much for "License To Chill" give this one a chance. Yeah it's not "A1A" or "Changes In Latitude" or "Havana Daydreamin'" (what I consider Buffett's holy trinity) but it's a solid enjoyable CD.

Punctuated by 2005's sprawling compilation of B-sides and outtakes (Out-of-State Plates), a nearly four-year interval between fresh recordings has done nothing to tarnish Fountain of Wayne's pop-drenched songwriting tandem of Chris Collingswood and Adam Schlesinger. This 14-song bash is a late-'60s/early-'70s time warp that exploits every facet of the pop action plan (chiming guitars, infectious choruses, sinful harmonies) and begs for radio play. As usual, the band never takes itself too seriously, crafting melodies around a lively, vigorous cast of characters that practically come to life. There's a DMV attendant who can't shake our attention (the bouncy, piano-boosted "Yolanda Hayes"), an airport-stranded couple waiting impatiently for lost luggage (the folksy "Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim"), and ex-lovers who blame it on the highway ("Fire in the Canyon," which explores the radio country-rock of the Eagles and America). A new, indelible cast of characters is inducted into the FOW pantheon of stars on Traffic And Weather: Yolanda Hayes, a sullen object of affection behind the glass at the Department Of Motor Vehicles; Seth Shapiro and Beth Mackenzie, two lonely, hardworking New Yorkers who cross paths - sort of - in "Someone To Love" (which features Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur singing backing vocals); the exhausted couple in "Michael and Heather At The Baggage Claim", dragging themselves onto an airport shuttle bus after a long trip; newscasters in heat in the album's title track, and many others. Hapless protagonists like the suspicious boyfriend of "This Better Be Good" and the hit-man target in "Strapped For Cash" are also classic Fountains Of Wayne narrators.

Travel and transportation continue to figure heavily in the on-the-go world of FOW. The guy who buys himself a "'92 Subaru" is convinced that the right pimped-out ride is all he needs to get the girl; in the Beatlesque "i-95" a driver explores a rest area gift shop late at night, on the way to visit his loved one; we hear of "an eerie kind of sadness on the highway today" in the Gram Parsons-tinged "Fire In The Canyon" (featuring backing vocals by the Candy Butchers' Mike Viola, who was the voice of "That Thing You Do"). The misery of sitting in coach on a delayed flight is examined in the wistful waltz "Seatbacks And Traytables" (which contains a guest appearance on guitar by James Iha). And in the semi-epic "New Routine", we follow a series of characters who each randomly pick a new place to live, only to discover someone else there who can't wait to move away.

Let's make it simple. The music is catchy, the lyrics are fun and original. I hear and feel Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Sheryl Crow, and a whole lot of great 80's bands on this one. I dare you not to bob your head while driving and listening to the title track!

It makes me laugh when I read reviews of people complaining about this record. I like all of FOW's records and I to might've liked a little more guitar driven rockers on this release but for the life of me I can't understand how anyone can put this record down. Nobody out there is as creative lyrically or hook wise and nobody is doing or can do what they are doing and I'm grateful as heck that there is a band out there that I actually look forward to hearing and learning those smart snappy lyrics. These guys are real musicians and that seems to be a long lost artform these days. Go listen to the radio and you'll see what I mean.

This album is either 2 or 3 stars - I decided for 2. This is the first Fountains of Wayne album I have listened to, but I have heard a few of their singles from years ago. The songwriting on this album is real corny, and intentionally so. A lot of the instrumentation is just as corny too - overly catchy hooks and harmonies that grate with only a few listens. Oh, and the name dropping and brand-slinging is rampant and also becomes grating.

Sure, they don't take themselves too seriously, but nearly every single song is obsessed with cars, trains, airplanes, and travel in some way. This obsession certainly is familiar to me - perhaps the songwriter is autistic? Or, to be fairer, maybe they were trying to create a theme album, however, I hear that this band is always obsessed with transportation. I don't know; I must say that I can easily remember each song, which is a good sign, but many songs are not memorable in a good way. I hear other albums, like their self-titled, are better. I recommend listening to that first if, like me, this is the first FoW album you are about to hear.

More of the Same from Fountains of Wayne.......2007-07-15

Fountains of Wayne's latest album doesn't change much of their formula. There are 14 songs, all some variation of pleasant, ultra-catchy pop-rock. It's all well-written and some of it is clever, and yet, the overall effect is something a bit diminished this time. I thought I personally had an endless appetite for cool variations on power-pop, but maybe that's not so true anymore. It's tough to pin down exactly what, if anything, is wrong with Traffic and Weather.

The songs, taken individually, are pretty darn good. There's opener and single "Someone to Love," which features a slight curveball in the familiar FoW formula by including a hyped-up disco-beat chorus. Then there's "Yolanda Hayes," a bouncy song with sweet lyrics about the narrator's attempts to woo a DMV attendant. "This Better Be Good" is about the paranoia of a man who keeps hearing sketchy rumors of his girlfriend being seen with other men and in places she isn't supposed to be. I-95 is a wistful country song with lyrics about driving down the titular interstate to visit a long-distance lover. "Planet of Weed" is a one-joke song that's made to work with the ambient sounds in the background- various clinking and low talking. Plus the piano that fades in and out, playing bits completely unrelated to the main song, and the tambourine that keeps showing up that isn't on the beat at all. "New Routine" is a strong rocker that zooms around the world and tells several stories of disenchanted people making a change in their lives.

But then there's the rest of the songs. The band's penchant for pop-culture references verges on the out-of-control on this album; it'll be dated by 2008. "Someone to Love" works entirely on its music and chorus, the verses reference Coldplay, King of Queens, and The Late Show, and you're getting a bit aggravated on the first song. Then there's "'92 Subaru," a song whose narrator is a pompous jackass talking about how he is pimping out his car. I think it's supposed to be ironic, but the "irony" comes across about as well as Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" came across as an anti-drug song (now they've got me making the references- dammit!). "Traffic and Weather" is a one-joke song that doesn't work, as a male news anchor spends the whole song telling his female co-anchor "we belong together, like traffic and weather." The effect is creepy, and not so funny. "Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim" is a boring story of a couple who have lost their luggage, and it's supposed to be sweet, but it's piled on too thick and becomes cloying. And "Strapped for Cash" features another unlikeable narrator that's supposed to be funny, this time a loser who owes money to everyone.

Leaders Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood are as strong as ever in the songwriting department. But since their style hasn't changed nearly at all over the past decade, the weaknesses in the lyrics keep this album from being a home run. Too bad the guys didn't write more stuff like the two great new songs off of their 2005 B-side collection, "Maureen" and "The Girl I Can't Forget." Despite the complaints, this is still a pretty good album. I'd give it a 3.5 on the Amazon scale, or a solid 7/10.

Fun fun fun!.......2007-06-08

My only prior experience with FOW was Welcome Interstate Managers which I love. Listening to this band never fails to bring a smile to my face. No, they are not very "deep," but they are clever and I always feel like I am in on the joke. Their rhymes put me in mind of Lily Allen. The song that runs through my head these days is Traffic and Weather, but I love Strapped for Cash, and the part that makes me go Awww! is in Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim where Michael asks Heather "Have you had enough?" and Heather says "Michael, you know it's you I love." And how about the places people end up in New Routine? Too funny. This is pop at its finest - catchy, funny and makes you feel smart.

Aaron Gillespie is a man obsessed. Whether he's out in front of The Almost, his new, eagerly anticipated rock-based project, or behind the drum kit for Underoath, the Clearwater, Florida-bred songwriter/musician can't help but throw himself into everything he does.

With Southern Weather, The Almost lets Gillespie put a different, more melodic side of himself on display. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his idol Dave Grohl, who stepped out from behind his drum kit to capture the rock world's hearts as one of the genre's most visible frontmen, Gillespie has begun a metamorphosis.

The disc's commanding opening track and first single, "Say This Sooner," introduces the album with an attention grabbing, percussion-driven anthem. "I grew up in the Deep South," Gillespie says of the urgent, hook-fostered opener. "Like anyone, I've had struggles along the way. But I am very much informed by Southern values and I think the songs speak to that."

Between his own duties out in front of The Almost and Underoath's touring and recording schedules, Aaron Gillespie is fully committed until 2008. For now, he's a firm believer in his ability to balance both. "Underoath is extremely special to me," he says of the group he co-founded in 1998 which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Album Chart with June 2006's Define The Great Line.

"Southern Weather has got a much broader scope," he continues. "From a 12 year old listening to her iPod on the school bus to a 38-year old guy commuting on a train, I'm excited by the fact that this album can find an audience with a lot of different people."

The first song of the album is great and is probably my favorite song. The first couple songs are great, but i have to say I got a little bored during the middle of the album. I think the last couple of the songs are great though. It is not what i expected. It was just okay. I suggest you try the band Underoath also because the singer of The Almost is the drummer/singer in Underoath.

This is a good debut for Aaron and company.I got hooked on these guys after I saw Say This Sooner on the tube,and I bought the the album as soon as it was released.Almost all the tracks are great but my favs are Say This Sooner,I Mostly Copy Other People,and Stop It.Can't Wait to see what these guys release next time.

Wow. This is a great album. go on their myspace and listen to "say this sooner" and trust me you will not be dissappointed. if you like that song you will definitely like this cd. it is very creative, and it breaks from emo and southern rock and alternative... its very tough to define the genre because it really has a fresh sound. the best songs on the cd are "say this sooner" "southern weather" and "call back when im honest". its a pity everyone is so skeptic about this cd just because the frontman is the underoath's drummer. whatever, the guy has talent, i give it up for him. 5 star cd.

Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter didn't truly fulfill Weather Report's artistic and commercial potential until they brought on-board a bassist who could function as an equal partner in the musical equation, like co-founder Miroslav Vitous, whose main shortcoming was his inability to play funk. In renegade bassist Jaco Pastorius, the band found a formidable composer and improvisor, who possessed deep roots in funk and R&B, yet was equally at home in modern jazz and Afro-Cuban settings. Not coincidentally, the presence of this innovative fretless bassist on Heavy Weather gave Weather Report the rhythmic/melodic dimension it had been missing since Vitous's departure, as evidenced by his voice-like declamations on Zawinul's ballad "A Remark You Made." On Zawinul's chart-topping, big band-styled arrangement of "Birdland," Pastorius provided the kind of big, sweeping orchestral gestures the tune required, while on the shifting canvas of Wayne Shorter's "Harlequin," the bassist's ability to articulate complex chords allowed him to function as a string section unto himself. And on his own "Havona," Pastorius not only soloed with horn-like artistry, but combined with drummer Alex Acuna and percussionist Manolo Badrena to give Weather Report its funkiest rhythm section ever. --Chip Stern

Testmant to great music.......2007-07-05

You buy it originally on vinyl, then get a tape to take in the car. When it comes out on CD, you buy the CD. Okay, then I found a copy in a used record store and grabbed it to keep in the car. That's what happened with me and "Heavy Weather."

"Birdland" drew me into the CD, but there's so much more than this one song to listen to. Weather Report's not just jazz, but a fusion of rock and African music.

"Heavy Weather" is the first jazz I ever bought and still some of the best.

And so is the incredible Jaco Pastorius on his fret-less electric base. Really, the only sub-par track on this CD is the very short Rumba Mama.

Are you kidding me?.......2007-04-28

This is arguably the single greatest fusion album of all time. (Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" and Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" might be its only competition) There are very few combinations of players who seem to form a bit of magic when they were together, but Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco Pastorius were one of those combinations. There is a reason why the post-Jaco Weather Report albums were not nearly as good as the ones with him, and it's because that magic was lost.

As far as the album itself goes...I don't even know how to start reviewing this. It's like trying to do an art review on the Mona Lisa or something. I mean, who doesn't know the tune to "Birdland"? I suppose that the argument could be made that the synthesized sounds are outdated, but some of the tunes have become so iconic that you'll hardly notice. And the playing is phenomenal. Wayne Shorter gets a bit of a short shift on this album because it doesn't sound like he's playing anything particularly complex, but when you look at the music, you'll see why. In some sections, the chord changes are literally happening EVERY SINGLE BEAT. That's ridiculous.

And Jaco is just a madman (and considering his condition, I mean this in a good way). There has never been a fretless player like him since, and I doubt that there ever will be again.

If you are interested in fusion, buy this and Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" immediately. You won't be disappointed.

"Birdland" [first track] is an unbelievable masterpiece. Jaco Pastorius on the magnificent four string bass (before we knew what a 5 string bass would sound like he previewed the sound with a 4 string). And add Wayne Shorter on Sax and you have 4 or 5 really decent tracks for the 'jazz- heads' among you. I was lucky enough to have witnessed this magic live in Austin Texas about 1977 at the old Paramount Theater. It was the 'Heavy Weather Tour' and they opened with "Birdland". Other than a small tech. bug in the synth at the beginning of the show it was great.

In a brief interview that precedes this CD's four bonus tracks--all unreleased gems from the original 1984 sessions--Stevie Ray Vaughan makes the point that "music used to be more based on common everyday occurrences like a train's sound going down the track ... a horse walking." On Couldn't Stand The Weather, Stevie Ray Vaughan began to separate himself from every other modern bluesman with his distinct playing style.

On this record, you can hear a number of influences both individual and stylistic. The obvious Hendrix influence in a scorching version of "Voodoo Chile," Guitar Slim/Albert King/Albert Collins on "The Things That I Used To Do," and jazzy influenced "Tin Pan Alley" and "Stang's Swang." I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album entitled "COULD'T STAND THE WEATHER" by one of Rock's greatest legendary premiere guitarists of ALL-TIME, I give you the late great guitar legend, M-R. S-T-E-V-I-E R-A-Y V-A-U-G-H-A-N! This legendary album was originally released in 1984 on vinyl/LP, cassette and Compact Disc on the Epic Records label in association with CBS Inc. I purchased the very first release of this album on Compact Disc and the matrix or ID number is EK 39304. This first release album on Compact Disc was actually manufactured in Japan by CBS/Sony, Tokyo, Japan. I also purchased this album on CD with the SUPER BIT MAPPING (SBM) in the MASTER SOUND series format on the Epic Legacy Records label. The matrix or ID number is EK 53927. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

WOW! What can I say about the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn't already been said? His story and humble beginnings hail from the great state of Texas! Stevie Ray was born on 3 October 1954 in Dallas, Texas. Stevie Ray would get the Rock bug spark early and would have his call of duty in Rock n' Roll upon hearing his most dearest and favorite guitarist and idol of ALL-TIME, the late great guitar legend, Jimi Hendrix! Stevie Ray would play many bar room gigs with his older brother Jimmie all across the country and Canada which would eventually expand worldwide. Stevie Ray NEVER gave up on his dreams in hoping for fame and fortune for he must have realized that it was his destiny to be a performer. Little did Stevie Ray know that his destiny was just around the corner that would change his life forever.

It would't be until 1982 when Stevie Ray and his band, DOUBLE TROUBLE, would be noticed and discovered at the annual Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland by Rock legends David Bowie and Jackson Browne! Bowie and Browne were present in the house that night and were in TOTAL disbelief upon what they were hearing! Realizing the talent, genius, greatness and full potential that Stevie Ray possessed, Browne notified many of his contacts and connections and even offered Stevie Ray the RARE opportunity to record, FREE OF CHARGE, at his own personal studio. WOW! It must have been destiny because Browne really truly believed in Stevie Ray's abilities and talents! The album "TEXAS FLOOD" from 1983 would be the result and Stevie Ray's first album for Epic Records.

In addition to this new found fame, Stevie Ray was approached by the legendary David Bowie and was asked to play on Bowie's hugely successful "LET'S DANCE" album and Tour with him! This in itself, was a huge honor for Stevie Ray and accepted Bowie's invitation in a split second.

With Stevie Ray's new found success, it was now time for Stevie Ray to head back into the recording studio to record the followup to the "TEXAS FLOOD" album. "BLUES EXPLOSION" from 1984 would be the result and again, the Stevie Ray Vaughan legend would continue to grow. With Stevie Ray's popularity growing ever more, Stevie Ray would quickly go back into the recording studio and record another follow up to the extremely successful "BLUES EXPLOSION" album. It would be on Stevie Ray's third album that he would really let loose which would result in accomplishing the worldwide fame and fortune that he had been in search of all his life. "COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER," released in 1984, would be the result. In my opinion, "COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER" is a BRILLIANT masterpiece album with BRILLIANT song tracks!

I will list and briefly review all of the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Scuttle Buttin'," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! This is a GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES ROCKER that KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! Stevie Ray REALLY lets loose on this Blues Rocker! I just wish that this Rocker would have been longer than 1:52! Despite that, I Love this Blues Rocker dearly!) (2.) "Couldn't Stand The Weather," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! I love Stevie Ray's blistering guitar riff arrangements and his blistering solo! Stevie Ray sings and sounds almost exactly like Eric Clapton! You can almost feel Jimi Hendrix's influence on Stevie Ray and it definitely shows on this album. I love this Blues Rocker DEARLY!) (3.) "The Things (That) I Used To Do," Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES NUMBER THAT KICKS A*S! Stevie Ray plays the Blues and his blistering solo with NO MERCY! I love this Blues number!) (4.) "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! A PERFECT AND BRILLIANT TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GREAT JIMI HENDRIX! This is ONE GREAT VERSION THAT NEARLY SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL IF NOT BETTER! Stevie Ray had a lot of BA*LS in recording this most sacred Hendrix classic. This Rocker KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S as well! I LOVE Stevie Ray's BLISTERING guitar solo in this classic song! In my opinion, had Jimi lived, he would have been extremely proud of Stevie's version and rendition of his most sacred Rocker! "I DIDN'T MEAN TO TAKE UP ALL YOUR SWEET TIME, I PROMISE TO GIVE IT BACK TO YOU ONE OF THESE DAYS! AND DON'T BE LATE!" To sum up this song track, in my opinion, this is almost eight minutes of the GREATEST A*S KICKING ROCK N' ROLL EVER! I love this Rocker so dearly!) (5.) "Cold Shot," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES ROCKER THAT WOULD KICK A*S! I love this Blues Rocker dearly as well!) (6.) "Roughest Place In Town," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY slow Blues number that kicks a*s! I love Stevie Ray's blistering guitar playing and his solo in this one! I love it!) (7.) "Honey Bee" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Breathtaking! Again, another GREAT STEVIE RAY BLUES ROCKER that KICKS A*S! Stevie Ray REALLY lets loose with his solo on this one! I love this Blues number dearly as well!) and (8.) "Stang's Swang." (Outstanding Brilliant! Superb! This is a GREAT STEVIE RAY JAZZ number that TRULY KICKS! I love this one as well!) I deeply apologize for not including the reviews on the last five tracks on this newly released Remasters edition since I do not yet own it. I promise to edit this review immediately upon buying and hearing these new tracks for myself closely. I will list these last five tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (9.) Every single song track contained in this original legendary album release is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!

As you can see, SO FAR, this is definitely one great legendary treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album is a true genuine classic that will definitely prove to persevere and endure the test of time and get better with age like wine! This legendary album is a true testament of Stevie Ray's brilliance and genius that would only get better until his untimely death in 1990. This legendary priceless gem without a doubt, will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, the STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN legend does not end here! If anything, IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! Stevie Ray would record three more extremely successful highly critically acclaimed studio albums not including the "BACK TO THE BEACH" soundtrack recorded in 1987. Stevie Ray's third studio album "IN STEP," released in 1989, would be Stevie Ray's last official studio album he would ever record alive! Following the success of "IN STEP" from 1989, Stevie Ray would go on tour with another one of his most favorite idol's, the legendary guitar GREAT, Eric Clapton! This would be the GREATEST TOUR in Stevie Ray's life and would also prove to be the greatest ultimate honor to be ON THE SAME STAGE with one of the WORLD'S and ROCK'S MOST GREATEST PREMIERE GUITAR PLAYERS of ALL-TIME! 27 August 1990 would be the last official performance of this tour with Clapton! It would also prove to be on this same very final night, at the Alpine Valley Amphitheater in Southern Wisconsin, that Stevie Ray would have THE GREATEST NIGHT OF HIS LIFE! Sadly, hours later, he would be gone forever! Jamming on the same stage with his brother Jimmie by his side, would be a star studed performance celebration which would include fellow guitarists Clapton, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy! The last song that Stevie Ray Vaughan would EVER perform live ALIVE was "Sweet Home Chicago!" WHAT A STAR STUDED NIGHT IT REALLY WAS INDEED! To add to the Stevie Ray legend, story or legend has it that Stevie Ray would cut his fingers while placing them over the guitar strings on the guitar frets. This legend is FACT! With this in mind, Stevie Ray's finger's and guitar would wind up bloody! Would Stevie Ray quit? HELL NO! He would go backstage and apply SUPER GLUE over the cut areas and then go back out and give his fans more! IS THAT LOYALTY OR WHAT? Sadly, on a tragic note, following this star studed gig performance, Stevie Ray (Without Clapton! Clapton was reportedly supposed to have accompanied and boarded with Vaughan!) would board a helecopter bound for Chicago, Illinois. According to the findings by the FAA, the helicopter pilot misjudged his bearings shortly after take off and slammed his craft into the side of a hill, killing all on board instantly. Upon hearing the news, THE WHOLE WORLD AS WELL AS THE WHOLE ROCK N' ROLL WORLD WAS IN SHOCK FROM DISBELIEF! In my opinion, It was like reliving "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED" in reference to the 1959 plane crash claiming the lives of Buddy Holly (A fellow Texan from Lubbock), J.P. (The Big Bopper) Richardson and 17 year old Ritchie Valens! Just imagine how Eric Clapton must have felt! Vaughan's death would bring back painful memories of another one of his dearest friends! Clapton went though this same fatality with Hendrix on 17 September 1970 when he was supposed to meet Hendrix at a night club in London. Clapton had bought a brand newly strung Fender left-handed V shaped electric guitar that he was going to give Jimi that night but Hendrix would NEVER show up to claim it or accept his gift for we all know what happened on 18 September 1970? In Stevie Ray's short life, he lived, breathed, accomplished, contributed and achieved so much in the Rock n' Roll and Blues world that it was a tragedy that his life was cut so short. Stevie Ray still had so much to give and was willing to give it all to us! Stevie Ray is a true legend that will NEVER be forgotten nor denied. What a major tragic loss for Rock n' Roll! And as the saying goes folks, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong or need I say more? Here's to you Stevie Ray and Double Trouble. R.I.P. With this album, Stevie Ray dethroned Eddie Van Halen.......2006-12-06

The first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan on the radio, I thought it was Hendrix. And I think he ranks with Hendrix as one of the two greatest guitar players in Rock history.

From the late 1970s until this album came out, Eddie Van Halen seemed to be the undisputed King of Rock guitar. With this album, Stevie Ray Vaughan left no question as to who, among the living, was #1. Although, like Hendrix, Vaughan would be cut down in the prime of his life, he left gargantuan tracks. (Why is it always the best who die young? Why couldn't they have gotten Jon Bon Jovi in that helicopter? "C'mon Jon, there's a hairdresser on board. Yeah, yeah, get inside Jon!")

The album contains an excellent cover of Guitar Slim's blues tune "Things that I Used to Do," as well as divine original tracks such as "Scuttle Buttin", "Honey Bee" and the title track. But the CD's highlight for this reviewer is Vaughan's cover of Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile."

While Stevie Ray's musicianship really shines through on this CD, when I saw him live for the first time, opening up for Dire Straights at the Montreal Forum in the mid-80s, it was just jaw-dropping amazing! He blew Mark Knopfler and the boys off the stage. If you like the music on this CD and haven't seen Vaughan perform in concert, I highly recommend his Live at Montreux DVD.

Unoriginal, but enjoyable.......2006-03-31

Whether you know it or not, you've heard an LP like this before. But the difference between Couldn't Stand the Weather and other similar LP's; you'd be hard-pressed to find a better guitarist than Stevie. That being said, don't expect to shelve your Allman Brothers Band so you can devote your life to the music of SRV. However, you should expect to enjoy this every time you hear it.
The two finest cuts on this LP are the title track and Cold Shot. The latter was so good, it led me to buy the album when I heard it on the radio at a ribs joint. The title track would stand as the best to be found here, though the stop-start pattern is annoying. The two instrumentals that bookend the LP (Scuttle-Buttin' and Stang's Swang) are both solid, energetic and enjoyable, though not all that memorable.
One reason why I was looking forward to hearing this LP was for the cover of Hendrix's Voodoo Child (Slight Return), which has always been one of my favorite songs. And though bits of it cut too close to the original (something a cover should NOT do), it's still worth having around strictly for the guitar solos. Another great jam track is Tin Pan Alley, though it does drag a bit, still a nice piece of music!
If you're into the blues, pick this up, but don't expect the Revolution. (Speaking of which, that Prince vynil in the basement calls...)

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Sparse and fascinating. The lyrics of the aptly named opening song conjures up images of boys, frogs, fiddles, and cornfields under open skies. The album flows seamlessly from track to track until climaxing in the beautiful Handsome Family cover, "Don't Be Scared." This isn't Bowl of Fire, though Kevin O'Donnel and Nora O'Connor lend their talents. Nor is it folk, rock, pop or anything else you've heard before. The etherial blend of violin, whistle, glockenspiel and vocals is otherworldly, baroque (yet distinctly midwestern, to my ear - a musical Fargo). Turn the lights low, the stereo up, and allow yourself to be absorbed into Bird's strange little world.

(DISCLAIMER: I have a serious soft spot for the male voice, for male singer/songwriters who tap their soul in their words and notes.) In the swoon of an Andrew Bird interview on NPR this spring (2005), I helplessly followed my fingers to the keyboard to order "Weather Systems" and "Mysterious Appearance of Eggs". Then to my doorstep came -- omygod -- lyrics so word-drunk, smart and mysterious, crooned & whispered & belted out in a voice soooooo alluring, accompanied by completely out-of-the-box musical arrangements involving whistling and electric violin... The artwork on the liner notes, particularly in the case of Mysterious Appearance of Eggs, ratchets the irresistability of this singer's work up another couple of notches right off the scale.

A while back I was attending a show in Columbia, Missouri, to see Vic Chesnutt and Andrew Bird was the opener. I had never heard anything like the music that Andrew offered the audience that night. In fact, I was so blown away by Andrew's performance, that I hardly paid attention to Vic! I purchased the Weather Systems CD from Andrew that evening and have been in love with it ever since. There is an ethereal quality to the music on this CD that has to be heard to be appreciated, any words that I would use here to describe it would not do it any justice at all. A stand out, for me, is the third track, "Lull." The lyrics combined with the completely enchanting music speak to the soul. I highly recommend this CD, you will not be disappointed in the quality of Andrew Bird's amazing talent.

Beautiful Music for the Midwest.......2005-02-14

I love this album. At first I didn't really did know why I liked it, but now I do. I live in rural Northwest Illinois and thats where Andrew Bird recorded this album. It paints a really beautiful picture of the midwest. Im not saying that somebody from another location wouldn't like this album, because it is really excelent music, but the reason why I love this album so much is because I feel a common bond with Andrew Bird in living in the same environment.

Although this is his first nationally distributed album, Eric Lindell is probably already tired of hearing himself tagged as "blue-eyed soul." But there is truth in that description. Sounding somewhat similar to Delbert McClinton and, with his lanky frame and scraggly beard, looking a bit like a tattooed young Bruce Springsteen/Tom Waits mashup, Lindell has the pipes, the style, and the songs to break out of his bluesy niche and into the mainstream. Recorded at various times in California and New Orleans with a revolving cast of musicians, Change in the Weather falls between a laid-back West Coast-styled soul, gritty Crescent City R&B, and a bit of frisky reggae. Despite the scattershot recording of these tracks, Lindell focuses the album's styles with dynamic and subtly emotional vocals that float with insistent assurance.

Horns punctuate the Stax-styled "All Alone" and the breezy Caribbean groove of "It Won't Be Long" adds layers to the already warm, soulful approach. While he never takes a solo, Lindell's ever-present rhythm guitar drives the sound, filling the spaces but leaving room for his low-key, commanding voice. California-born, New Orleans-schooled singer/songwriter/vocalist Eric Lindell is a roots rocker with dozens of original songs that combine soul shaking rhythm & blues, reggae grooves, swamp pop and blues. Lindell is a fan favorite in his northern California turf and his adopted home of New Orleans (where he was featured on the cover of OffBeat magazine and performed on the main stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival). He is accomplished on guitar, harmonica, keyboards and bass, and has performed with some of the Crescent City's top musicians as well as some of the jam band community's biggest names (including members of Galactic). The winner of the "1999 John Lennon Songwriting Competition" for his song Kelly Ann, Lindell is now ready to bring his rough-hewn voice and memorable original songs to the rest of the music-loving world with the release of his Alligator Records debut, CHANGE IN THE WEATHER.

While tooling around on My Space one day, I went to one my "friend's" home pages, which "friend" is Tinsley Ellis. On Tinsley's page, I ran across an artist of whom I had never heard, but for some reason, I was curious about him. As I clicked on that artist's home page, one of the funkiest, most fun songs I have heard in a very long time began to blare from my speakers. I immediately added that song to my own player. That song is called "Casanova," and that artist is none other than Eric Lindell. Eric's music highlights everything that is wrong with music today. The focus is on his musicianship, his smokey vocals, and his incredible songwriting skills. His music takes me to places I've never been but want to go. The selections on this CD go from making one want to get up and jam to kicking back and enjoying the company of close friends or a significant other. If asked to give you the "highlights" on this CD, I will tell you "all of them." From the funky beat and anthem that is "Two Bit Town" to the jazzy, bluesy strains of "Sunny Daze," Eric ensures that no one will ever take your smile or change your funky style. This is a must-have for all true music lovers who appreciate the talents of a unique, multi-talented artist. Eric is primed to take blues to a whole new level. I don't know about you, but I'm going with him.

Makes Your Shoes Move.......2007-02-14

Eric Lindell who looks like a recent high school grad from the beaming picture on the cover of the CD will turn 38 this year. Lindell began working in Sonoma County, California before relocating to New Orleans. He won the 1999 John Lennon songwriting competition. With four CDs & one EP under his belt on small labels, this is first recording for the Alligator blues label. The tunes on this disc put a smile on your face and keep your toes tapping with a bluesy soul groove. The opener "Give It Time" boasts percussion by War's Harold Brown and Lindell's relaxed optimistic vocal slur, "Things will get better, a change in the weather, it just might suit you good." Another favorite of mine is "Feel Like I Do" with Brown's pounding percussion and Lindell's catchy chorus, "Baby, one two three four times a night, I wonder if you feel all right like I do." "Sunny Daze" also has sparkling percussion sounding like nouveau Santana with Lindell's slick guitar licks "Some rainy days you know I dig the rain; It's rolling down my window pain; Some rainy days I have no luck; Hell, I can't get up." While these are my very favorite tracks, the rest of the CD is strong with a soulful blues groove that's sure to make your shoes move. Run to get this one! Enjoy!

Nasty (as in awesome) Debut.......2006-12-11

Wow ... holy wow. This cd sizzles with fresh music new to the blues scene. The riffs are intoxicating(ly) great. I couldn't stop playing "Feel Like I Do," which is the third track, but it didn't take that long to proclaim this a winner. Start at No. 1, "All Alone," and the music grows from there because Lindell has a multi-faceted approach to his music with a touch of rock, pop, blues, raggae, horns/brass, and a voice knee deep in soul. His singing comes straight from the heart. The arrangements are tight. Go for it!

UTTERLY BEAUTIFUL.......2007-07-18

I have listened to quite a few bluegrass music, never knew what bluegrass means and never understood why it's called bluegrass. Then I heard Time from the Weather and Water album and I played the music over and over and over again. Wonderful instruments, music is so facinating!!!I love the Weather and Water album; my favorites from the album-The Ghost of Who We Were, Weather and Water, Time and The House on Vine Street.

Best Up and Coming.......2007-01-03

I first heard the Greencards at a concert they were playing in my hometown. This was one of the albums they were promoting at this concert. While the band was onstage, the audience learned that they had been nominated for a Best Emerging Artist award and that they were supposed to be playing at these awards that very same night, but as they had already booked at the concert I was attending, they decided to forego the awwards and rather than cancel their show! They ended up finding out during the concert that they had Won the Best Emerging Artist award at the Americana Awards!! So we got to see them playing many of the songs on this Weather and Water album on the night they won an award for it!
They are a truly talented group of musicians. Their instrumental work, lyrics and beautiful blend of voices makes them a standout! I highly recommend the Greencards and Weather and Water. Especially for those who think Bluegrass can only be tinny-sounding mountain music.

I realized after listening to one of my stations on Pandora that I kept loving songs and finding they were the Greencards on this album. I loved it so much, I bought it. Pandora is a great tool becaus it led me to this fabulously simple yet rich album. Love it, and I highly recommend it.

best album of '05.......2006-01-27

i saw this band open for dylan/nelson in june(2 weeks before this was released) and thought they were great. in fact my sister and mother (and me if i am honest but i have to say mr.D was best just because he is great)actually thought they were the best act of the night. anyways needless to say when we got a play copy of this at the record store i work at i listened to it and what i heard was the best release of 2005. after having this for only a week i went out and bought their debut which is also really good. there is not one bad track on this album it is phenomenal. you can pop this in and listen to every track without being bored, it is great. my favorite tracks are "don't want forever," "the ballad of kitty brown," "boardered on a breakdown," "the ghost of who we were," and "weather & water." if you like this kind of music buy this album you won't be disappointed.

The Greencards have earned their success the hard way. Individually they learned the business playing for other artists such as Rodney Crowell . They actually met and came together as a result of working on a project for another artist. They have build a fan base using the time honored tradition of opening for bands they respected musically. In short, they are a flashback to a time when musicians became successful by making, of all things, music. On their second album they remind new fans and old exactly what kind of music can be wrung of this kind of work. Haunting and memorable, The Greencards may just be the best contemporary straight bluegrass band on the scene today.
The album opens with the haunting tribute to losing a loved one, "The Ghost of You And Me," which features Carol Young's voice to its best advantage. The title track is a chilling ballad, penned by fellow Aussie Jed Hughes, about a man forced by economics into commercial fishing, trapped on a boat in a storm. "Almost Home" is a quick fingered and fast paced instrumental which still maintains the quietly beautiful mood of the album. "Like A Melody" is a warm, pretty love song, featuring Kym Warner on vocals. The albums lead off single "Time" returns to the melancholy vocals of Carol Young, accentuated to perfection by the fiddle and mandolin of Eamon McLoughlin and Kym Warner respectively. "Long Way Down" allows Warner the chance to stretch his vocals into a melancholy and minor keyed song which sums up the album's theme of the vagarities of love and loss. "Marty's Kitchen" is a striking and rousing instant instrumental classic which includes plenty of fiddle and two guitar solos. Next they break into the albums second cover, Patty Griffin's "What You Are," which finds Carol Young singing at her musing and heartbreaking best. In "Don't Want Forever" Young muses prettily "give me a little of you time/I think there's something we could find/I don't want forever/Just give me tonight." This is followed by "The Ballad of Kitty Wells" which features Warner drawing on his adopted Appalachian roots in a tale lust, adultery and murder. "Bordered On A Breakdown" continues the theme of a man brought to the brink of madness by the love of a fickle woman. The album closes with "The House On Vine Street," a quiet and introspective instrumental song.
With Weather and Water The Greencards continue their heritage of understated beauty. While they follow the same general pattern of Allison Krauss and Union Station, they carve their own ground and Carol Young is often a more satisfying vocalist. This combination turned Movin' On into one of the most talked about debut albums in years. Weather and Water brings this talent into focus with a their continual thread of time, love and loss. Between the heart wrenching pluck of Warner's mandolin, the weeping of McLaughlin's fiddle and the melancholy ach of Young's voice, Weather and Water is an album not soon forgotten, even in the current sea of Contemporary Bluegrass albums.

From 1970 to 1985, the jazz-fusion ensemble known as Weather Report reigned supreme as one the most distinguished and indefinable ensembles of the 20th century, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter and keyboardist Joe Zawinul were the cofounders of this ever-changing group. I hope you read this, Richie!.......2007-07-16

WAY back in 1974, my best-friend-in-the-army, Richie, and I were listening to each other's albums. Knowing that I was not-so-surreptitiously making more money at night as a musician than I was by "playing Army," Richie told me, "Nah - I don't think you'd like it" when I asked him to play Weather Report's first album for me. I DID badger him into playing the etherial track, "Milky Way" for me, and - even though I was - and am - a "rabid Stones' fan" (like Ian Hunter said about himself & Jaco) - I was captivated. Being a bassist, I had already heard of Miroslav Vitous, and I STILL remember Tony, the drummer of my band, yammering about Alphonse Mouzon and Eric Gravatt - SERIOUS MUSICANS, those three, and I haven't even mentioned Joe Zawinul (the ONLY person I will EVER trust with a freaking synthesizer), or Wayne Shorter, Saxophonist Extraordinaire. And though my interest kind of...well, "slipped" until the year 1978 - UGH!, all my hippie friends were then bleating about that pithy Chuck Mangione..."thing" that was so prevalent then ("Feels So Good" or something), and I kept screaming at them, "NO! That is bubblegum at its most hideous! Have you heard 'Heavy Weather' by Weather Report? You NEED TO!" Well, histrionics aside, all of Weather Report's music is very well represented here on "Forecast: Tomorrow," and I'm grateful, because that certainly fills a hole in my CD collection. But I am really - REALLY - most grateful for the inclusion of the DVD with a 1978 performance by the Jaco Pastorius/Peter Erskine incarnation! I (now blushing FURIOUSLY!) purchased that Joni Mitchell/"Shadows And Light" thing a couple of years ago, only - ONLY - because Jaco was featured so prominently thereon. And athough I'm too cheap to relinquish any of my DVDs or CDs, "Shadows" will now be relegated to that vague, indefinite place where I store, say, the Stones' "Bigger Bang," that John Phillips' "Pay Pack And Follow," or, for THAT matter, anything by the Eagles or such. A Worthy Anthology.......2007-07-12

What a wonderful collection to have; a worthy anthology of the most important jazz fusion band from the 1970s and 1980s.

I have heard some of the original albums and was intent on collecting them at some stage, but this anthology captures the band perfectly on this 3 cd set, covering many of the popular fan tunes as well as many points of interest along the way. Utterly intriging and fascinating to hear, you can completely lose yourself in this music at times.

The live dvd is a great addition to the 3 cd set, and I'm lucky to have it in my collection. It could have been remastered a little with today's technology (aka Cat Stevens' Cat Stevens: Majikat Special Edition) as the picture is a little grainy at times, but the sound quality is still good.

This anthology is a worthy addition to your music collection, and saves you trying to hunt down the Weather Report albums. Unless you have a particular album in mind then you will not find yourself lacking with this purchase, as this collection is quite extensive and stands as testimony to a great collaboration of musicians.

Good cd selections - Great DVD!.......2007-05-07

I don't understand complaints that the cd's here contain already released material. The product description clearly says so. I for one found this collection a very nice compliment to my only other Weather Report cd "Weather Report, the Jaco Years". "Forcast: Tomorrow" contains great stuff from the pre-Jaco and post-Jaco years. The photos and notes in the accompanying book are very good.

As for the DVD, it is also clearly described as a video from the Rockpalast concert of 1978, and if you already have it you are very fortunate. I had not seen it before, and I found it to be very good. The performance is excellent. The cameras switch to capture the ensemble well. The close ups are good enough to follow how each performer is executing their important solos. Jaco is at his best. This is the quartet with Peter Erskine, and the performance captured here is more complete and, to my ear, better than the "8:30" cd.

For those who don't have any CDs by Weather Report, this compilation gives you a wonderful overview of the history of the group, all the different personel, a wonderful booklet of photos and info, and a great DVD performance with Jaco. I hadn't heard lot of the early music and I really appreciate the chronology in this box set. The price I paid was a steal. The fact that all the tunes were picked by Joe Z and Wayne S was great!!!!!
