El Da Sensei, of the much missed duo the Artifacts, played a major role in the development of "backpack rap," the mid-'90s music of choice for many a young hip-hop head. Along with the dissolution of brother act Organized Konfusion, the Artifacts' 1997 split dealt a blow to the genre's vitality, and while the sound never really died, it surely went underground. Relax Relate Release, El's first full-length release in five years, puts an updated spin on many of the same B-boy themes and mad shout-outs to New Jerusalem (a.k.a. New Jersey) that made instant classics of Artifacts' tunes such as the graff-oriented "Wrong Side of the Tracks." Production by the likes of new-jack indie hip-hop heroes J. Rawls and Shawn J. Period reinforce the "old to the new" continuum, while the appearance of Organized Konfusion's Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po (on the intriguing "Frontline") brings the family full circle. --Rebecca Levine

4 out of 5 stars El da sensei has pulled through with this one.......2006-07-17

Another good bunch of songs from the Artifacts man. Tracks such as "Summer time bluez" and "Questions and answers" can be considered excellent songs with summertime bluez bordering on a classic. The album's theme looks at how hip hop has gone down hill and reminisces on the good ol' days. It carries on El da sensei's view that he's never got enough credit from his work which I would agree. Questions and answers is a brilliant example of this. A very chilled fresh natural sound this is a good rendition from El, but lacks the true brilliance of tracks such as "the music", "bumrush" and "brick city kids" with previous collabos. Buy it and you'll be impressed if you like underground hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars the sensei..............the masterpiece.......2003-10-15

Thank god when Atifacts broke up neither Tame one or El da sensei decided enough was enough!!!! Because quite literally, both of these m.c.'s are nothing sort of genius. I had managed to get a hold of every 12' EL released since the split and they've all been OFF THE HOOK. So when i got this album i was a little sceptical as to whether the man could emulate his previous efforts. Firstly, to set the record str8, he does and takes it up a notch too. None of the 12' appear on this except for "frontline"(which feature monch+prince po) as a bonus cut. The whole album from start to finish is amazing. He's created his own sound to rap and the lyrics are taken up a whole new level,(which i didnt think was possible). From the opening cut, after the intro,"relax" to "speakin'" to "so easily" to "eternally" and all the way to "summertime blues" to "in the lab"(which is my personal favourite) its just incredible. Bottomline if your in2 real hiphop, not the bling bling cr*p you hear on nearly every radio show this is for you. If like me you were really disapointed when Artifacts split you'll love this, the next chapter!!!! The sensei is back to teach you the way baby!!!
