4 out of 5 stars needs less (or no) keyboard.......2007-07-12

the guitar is decently heavy and really good, but as soon as you start getting into it, they stop and play some retarted keyboard thing. the vocals are pretty good, except for the actual singing, which is totally out of place. i have nothing against actual singing in the choruses and such, but come on. that is just annoying. don't think i'm some loser who only likes metal because he thinks he's hardcore and listens to slipknot and stuff like a lot of posers do, but i cannot deal with the random whimpy keyboard in every single song. hey becoming the archetype, take all the keyboard stuff, put it one song, call that song a "ballad" and put it as the last song on the album and you would be one of my favorite bands. instead i barely listen to you guys. i gave this 4 stars because of the couple good songs on it and the guitar is really good, but i still wouldn't buy it. i would however, buy Autopsy, Epoch of War, and Construct and Collapse on iTunes and then buy their second album, which i loved. read my review of that album and don't send me hate mail, seeing as how i was the only one disappointed in this album.

4 out of 5 stars If you're here, you're getting it.........2007-06-30

I really hate reviews... Music is subjective in itself, so to offer a review is not much more than talking to people that have similar interests... with that being said...

This is really good stuff, I mean really good. The production quality is excellent and the substance in this music must be heard to be appreciated. I didn't get to this place in music easily and can certainly understand people that don't "get" this style / sound, but if you do, you are in for a treat.

As the first song opens with a snobbish little hammered dulcimer bit that builds with some grove and then just flat out assaults the listener with technical, massive blasts that demand as much from your volume knob as can be tolerated.

This band breaks away from the norm and gets you to another place.

5 out of 5 stars The Physics of Fire - Best Metal Album in Recent Years.......2007-05-21

Since their first release, "Terminate Damnation", Becoming the Archetype has by far become one of my favorite metal bands of all time. I listened to the first album so much that I know all of the lyrics to every song, and have never really looked at a lyrics cheat-sheet. So, needless to say, when BTA announced the new CD I was excited. All I could really see happening when the lineup change was announced was something good, especially after I listened to some of Aletheian's stuff (the band which Alex Kenis also plays with).

The first thing I can say is that this album is a lot different from the first. While the first seemed to sort of carry on in the same death-metalcore style previous trekked out by legendary band Living Sacrifice, this CD definately heads in a more progressive direction. All I can say is that the lineup change with adding Kenis in on lead guitar made them go where few (American) Christian metal bands have gone in recent years. While the last album was somewhat lacking in technically challenging lead guitar parts, The Physics of Fire is chock-full of guitar solos and licks that would make any lover of Steve Vai, Rusty Cooley, or John Petrucci cry.

I can also say that the mixing and production quality on the CD is a step up from the first. Terminate Damnation's mixing and whatnot, while excellent, was done in more of a style that suits metalcore bands such as As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red, while The Physics of Fire's mix and production reaks of Opeth and Scar Symmetry-esque dynamics.

Another thing to note about this album is something not seen very often - it's a concept album, which I believe adds greatly to the value and integrity of the music. Every single song on the CD intertwine with each other to tell an epic story, with 4 of the songs creating the 4 part "The Physics of Fire" Suite.

I'd also rate this album high on playability...This CD has dominated my mp3 player, my Winamp playlists, and my car stereo ever since i picked it up on release date.

Go out, get this album, and prepare for the horns to be upped instantly.

3 out of 5 stars Song writing and vocals take a step backwards.......2007-05-20

I've just gotten this album after absolutely loving Terminate Damnation and I'm really struggling to listen to it to the end. The two changes in band members have really had an influence on this work, especially the leads.

What I really liked about the 1st album seems to have disappeared. The vocal variety has pretty much gone with Jason pretty much belting out an angry shout more akin to Hardcore/Metalcore bands. There are no low growls (like in "one man parade" and "elegy"), no high pitched shreaks like in the opening to Elegy and through it. His main vocal style remains unchanged but with fewer changes in pitch, less growls etc. Even the vocal mixing is different, lacking the richness and depth of Terminate Damnation. Vocals are now rather flat and one dimensional with little overlaying of low and high together.

I normally love clean vocals (the new Dark Tranquility album - fiction is brilliant with Mikael Stanne's vocals haunting beautiful) but Alex Kenis's vocals sound weak and fluffy, syrupy sweet. Please either find a strong singer or forget the clean vocals.

The production seems muddied compared to the crisp, clean production style of the last album. The symbols are not as crisp and sharp as TD with guitars sounding hollower and flat.

Alex Kenis tries hard with his leads but honestly, they all sound pretty much the same with too much fretboard gymnastics and little feeling. Far too much hammering and not enough pinching or plucking, no wa wa pedals, with the tone sounding too soft (to cover up the sounds of his hands moving on the strings?) and never changing. Compared to TD (Terminate Damnation) leads (No Fall Too Far- lovely use of wa wa pedal and great feeling, Ex Nihilo - fits the rhythmn perfectly but not long enough :-), Into Oblivion - the acoustic lead is a thing of beauty) nothing comes close to them on POF. Unimaginative and repetitive....repetitive....have a said that before?

I really miss the style of songwriting of TD. This new album just doesn't have the slower, heavier mix of the old one or the change of tempo's. POF is overall faster without the brilliance of TD, no outstanding track like Elegy. Nocturne is the instrumental on POF, which is nice with guitar and piano but not as well written or absorbing as "Night's Sorrow" or "Denouement" and more repetitive than them both.

I really was excited when I heard BTA had a new album out but I confess I was worried when I heard about the band changes. It happens all the time, band gets new members and sounds different. This road is well worn with BTA packing their bags and now making the journey of change, evolving into something i'm not sure I like.

Well cya fellas. When you find out that the grass isn't greener on the other side and you miss home, i'll be here waiting.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing it with fire!.......2007-05-16

Fire is an apt way to describe this album, 'cause it smokes. Losing two members and adding one (Alex from Aletheian, and we know he can be technical) hasn't taken away from this groups sound at all, it's as heavy and as technical as ever. The album opens by easing you into it with a little instumental softness then the pummeling ensues at full force. The first song especially reminds me of something a Communic or Scar Symmetry might do at their heaviest and has a melodic death metal feel that the album never quite reaches again. If you liked the last one you should really dig into this and discover the greatness it holds. The one thing holding it back is falling into some metalcore boringness at times and the clean singer does not do a very good job. Other then that it is a sonic brain cleaning that brings the metal and the lyrics are very Biblically focused again. BTA is bringing the metal and showing that christians can be as loud and as technical as any band out there.

5 out of 5 stars sorry.......2007-07-15

i said some harsh words in my review of their other album, but this album is much better. the keyboard is less random and more hardcore, the vocals are better, and the guitar is amazing. i had ordered a shirt with the first album and sort of regreted doing so, but now i'm glad i did. this is an amazing band, so make sure you realize i was disappointed in their other album, not the band. i did give it 4 stars, mostly for the few good songs on it, so this one definantly deserves a 5. just buy Autopsy, Epoch of War, and Construct and Collapse on iTunes to get all the good songs on their other album and then buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars I Get it, But I Just Don't Get It.......2007-06-10

No matter how much I listen to this album, I can't seem to hear the greatness that most other reviewers here. To hear some people (especially on Christian Rock sites like Firestream), these guys are the greatest thing to come along in 15 years. Are they good musicians? Yes. Do they make some really good music? During a lot of the CD, yes. But at other times, I felt like they were putting stuff in a song just because they thought it was something cool, paying little attention to whether it actually made the song better. I gave the CD four stars, because I do think it's good music, but as much as I try, I can't see this being a 5 star album.

5 out of 5 stars A brutal blend of metal styles.......2007-05-12

Becoming the Archetype's musical style lies somewhere between metalcore and death metal. That being said, they take the best of both worlds. vocals range from screams to guttural growls, guitars range from acoustic to VERY down tuned insane rifts with machinegun-like drums setting the beat...if you like brutal, loud, technical music, this is the CD for you. It was one of the first death/metalcore bands I started listening to when I stopped with Nu Metal. Doing so was like starting a workout program after sitting on the couch and eating junk food: At first, you don't know how you are ever going to get used to this, but you know it's better for you, and in the end, you won't want to go back.

Becoming the Archetype's lyrics may not SEEM overtly Christian, but they actually are VERY Christian, but they are just deeper and more theological than simply growling "JESUS!!"

All in all, an excellent CD!

5 out of 5 stars this band does not stop short of amazing........2007-04-22

Becoming The Archetype is an amazing band. this album really shows off their versatility. their sound is a blend of keyboard and guitar passages.
this is an album for eclectic Christian metalheads who like a variety of sounds. I recommend this band if you like Petra(R.I.P.), Stryper, Bloodgood(R.I.P), Mortification, Still Remains, Demon Hunter, Zao, As I Lay Dying, Underoath, Extol, the Showdown, Norma Jean, Flee The Seen, Kutless, Narnia, Tourniquet, Hangnail, and Jacob's Dream, and various other metalcore bands, whether Christian or secular.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Awesome Metal.......2007-04-06

I really dislike those ignorant jerks (to put it in polite and unbannable terms) who continually say oh these guys are christians therefore they are not metal. shut up. who cares what they sing about really. if they want to be christians let them, its called freedom of religion.

its funny these people. Go to a Deicide review. on there these same people i mentioned above will be complaining about the christians talking about deicide's lyrical content, saying "its just music lighten up". yeah, i say HYPOCRITE to you folks. ha ha!

and to just ignore and forget this band just because of their lyrical content is a horrible mistake. these guys are very talented musicians that make brutally heavy music, but at the same time sounding unique and original, not like half the bands comning out nowadays.

this album did take a little getting used to. you know, when you first hear an album and your like "ehh its okay" and then later down the road your like "AWESOME!!!' thats what this album was like.

my favorite songs are probably ex nihlio, elegy and the epigone. trivial paradoxym is a really weird and heavy song that just seems to go all over the place, and one man parade is an awesome straight forward rocker. the second half of elegy is just beautiful with the piano to guitar to the brutal end. they are coming out with a new album in may, looking forward to it.

its kind of hard to put these guys into a catagory. they dont really sound like anyone else. but its kind of progressive sounding like opeth and at times melodic like dark tranquility.

Yes this is a christian band. their lyricals are very meaningful and touching, so if you are a devout christian that happens to like metal this is a great band for you. and if your not christian, they still are a unique and talented band that deserves to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars So Much Violence in OUR name!!!!.......2007-03-04

I admit, I was just as skeptical about the survival of this band after Dino Cezares, by many considered the chief architect of the FF sound, suddenly parted ways with the group. The circumstances surrounding his departure are unclear, but it appears they were far from friendly and pleasant. After all, the title track refers to Cezares: "The infection has been removed, the soul of this machine has improved", implying rather hostile relationship between Burton and FF's former main guitarist. And yet, although I have already stated otherwise on "Obsolete" review, THIS is the best Fear Factory album to date. They haven't sounded this fresh, innovative, focused and energetic since "Demanufacture", which I now consider the second best, making "Obsolete" a third. The only reason why I initially considered FF's third album their best, is because I had yet to hear "Archetype".
True, the music doesn't offer much more than "good old Fear Factory", but that is precisely why I find it so appealing. On "Digimortal", which I don't find as hopeless as a lot of metal heads, nevertheless the music began to sound a little stale, tired and comfortable, too comfortable at times. It was an album where you could still hear metal, but it was piled up with the roots-meets-third machine head generic riffing that had more to do with Korn and other simple-riffers than with Pantera or Sepultura. Fear Factory's sound became slightly run-of-the-mill. Saddest of all, they became predictable, which for any musician is the beginning of the end.
And the end came, indeed. The band almost (or actually DID) break up when D. Cezares left. Perhaps he wanted to continue this new sound, and perhaps Burton wanted to preserve the trademark FF heaviness and originality from "Demanufacture". What favors such a position is the fact that "Archetype" borrows heavily from that album: the sound is very selective, and yet huge ("Bite the Hand that Bleeds", "Human Shields"), and Burton even managed to write some of his best and most provocative lyrics, including the mock-judgment of god's ambiguous and mysterious ways on "Default Judgement" (assuming god is TOTALLY in control, which to me, too, sounds like horse manure, man-made theology)).
Burton is a very observant and witty social commentator. He returns to the idea of spiritual purity known from "Obsolete" with the same extreme description of a man who disgruntled with his corrupted position in the socioeconomic fabric, proceeds to absolve himself by self-immolation (Slave Labor).
But I particularly like Burton's stand on the Bush administration and his policies, especially foreign (Iraq). The system is a combination of religious bigotry and callous materialism, where, again, human beings are no longer ACTORS but FACTORS on the political arena. The anti-war "Human Shields" even specifically questions and condemns the "bully of the world" attitude of current executive toward the Middle East, as Bell sings in the creepy, sad, but clearly still angry voice: "children running in the streets, solders' boots are on their feet". Vietnam, Somallia, Afghanistan, Iraq, all these were and continue to be plagued with the despicable idea of forced child armies, trained to kill and die like adults. This song hits home more than others, because having witnessed such pictures in human misery myself (as the Quartermaster supply specialist in Iraq 2003/2004), I know that Fear Factory paints reality here. No longer are we lured by the sci-fi story of machines vs. men. Instead, the grievances echo the facts of our very lives...
The overall sound reminds of the quality of the first two Machine Head albums and the intensity of Fear Factory's second. Burton is a vocal giant, his clean and brutal voice are both flawless, probably his best performance ever (just listen to the title track, "Bite the Hand that Bleeds" or "Human Shields")
Fear Factory achieves a very tight, well-constructed and a very catchy set of mostly brutal cuts, such as the Thrash Core impressive "Cyberwaste" highly reminiscent of "Vulgar Display of Power" and Pantera, or very "Demanufactural", highly controversive and bold "Act of God", which actually borrows certain riffage from "Self Bias Resistor". Yes, there's also room for "Digimortal" and "Obsolete" (Drones) as well as even "Soul of the New Machine" in the spectacular "Bonescrapper", arguably the best track on the album. It features genuine BLASTBEATS as it is an example of no less than of pure, extreme Death Metal (check out the laugh at the end, very similar to "Where the Slime Live" Morbid Angel and "Domination").
I can honestly say that the material is so equal, that no fillers are present, unless you count "Ascension", which is not an actual song, but rather an epilogue to "Human Shields" and the entire CD. FF even managed to turn a Nirvana cover into a devastating slab of thrashcore fury (School)
I have yet to listen to "Transgression" so it is too early for me to judge if they stayed this fit to date, as the tile track, which I actually did hear is insufficient for the judgment of Fear Factory's progress. "Transgression"-the song, reminds me of Ministry and Thrash Metal (seemingly disparate elements), but also Gojira (yeah, the French sensation), and overall I like it. Nevertheless, I predict that once I'd familiarize myself with "Transgression"-the album, "Archetype" will still have remained Fear Factory's best work, one I dare say they will have a tough time to top in all future endeavors.

5 out of 5 stars Their best since 'Demanufacture'.......2006-11-30

Thats all i can say about this cd. Excellent sound, drums are phenomenal and the tracks are smoking. Very little filler here. Even the subdued 'undercurrent' is an exceptional FF track. I love this cd that proves Dino was not a necessity. Great job!

4 out of 5 stars An Awesome comeback!.......2006-08-23

I have been an early fan of Fear Factory, since the days of "Soul of a New Machine" thinking they were doing something original: mixing death-styled vocals with clean melodic singing, machine-like industrial percussion with detuned grindcore guitars.
All these elements mixed together are almost necessary for young metal bands today, but back in the early 1990s, they were unheard of.

Fear Factory were basically the precursors of "nu" and other types of modern metal music, long before such things existed.

After their great 1995 Roadrunner album "Demanufacture" the band were on the verge of a major breakthrough that would catapult them to the next level, but, perharps sensing this, their songwriting and direction took a wrong turn with the "Obsolete" and "Digimortal" albums, which were basically uninspired affairs with a more "accessible" sound.

Then the band had a bitter break-up with guitarist and founding member Dino Cazares, and disintegrated.
Cazares, who also formed Grindcore project band Brujeria with members of Faith No More and Napalm Death, was basically the architect of the band's sound, so most fans, including myself, had pretty much given Fear Factory for dead, specially after the band was dumped by Roadrunner and it was rumored to have reformed sans Cazares, with bassist Christian Olde Wolbers as his replacement.

Fortunately, i was wrong.
The new Fear Factory album "Archetype," not only crushes "Obsolete" and "Digimortal" in terms of intensity and songwriting, but it sounds like a worthy successor to "Demanufacture."
All of the elements that made Fear Factory such a great band are back: the relentless machine-like drumming, the mixed vocals, the intensity and great, memorable songs, paired with some new-found anger, undoubtely inspired by the band's dealings with their former label Roadrunner.

Fear Factory have something prove, and they certainly sound like they do, and we can thank them for providing the fans with an awesome album.

5 out of 5 stars Fear Factory doing what they do best!.......2006-05-21

Fear Factory is back from the dead. After the disappointing reaction to 2001's "Digimortal" album, it appeared certain that Fear Factory was no more. They'd split up and moved on. But with the notable exception of Dino Cazares, the guys have reformed to once again unleash their industrial edged death metal onto the world. So is this a continuation of the nu-metallish "Digimortal" or a return to the "Demanufacture" period of yesteryear.

I'm happy to announce that it's the latter of the two. Fear Factory are once again doing what they do best, without trying too hard to be a successful, commercially viable proposition. Perhaps it was Dino that was leading them down such a strange path towards the end of their previous time together, as this album would have been a much better follow-up release to "Demanufacture" or even "Obsolete" than what actually occurred. The lyrics of the title track seem to be heading that way. "The infection has been removed, the soul of this machine has improved". Everything that made Fear Factory great is back in full force. Raymond Herrera's distinct clinical drumming style, Burton's aggressive growls countered by his outstanding clean choruses and they've lost nothing by Christian taking on both lead and rhythm guitars. They may have left the grind-like era of the debut behind, but the power of tracks like "Cyberwaste" cannot be ignored.

Unfortunately, "Archetype" doesn't quite live up to the very lofty standards of "Demanufacture", mainly due to a slightly weaker second half to the album, as well as a lack of absolutely killer tracks. It's a very solid release though and I'm satisfied with it. Here's hoping they stick together and learn from their past mistakes, as this is great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Fear Factory, You Know Them, You Love Them (4.5).......2006-04-04

This was the first CD that really got me into FF, even though I knew of their existence since, like, I think Digimortal. Anyways I heard "Drones" back in 2004 and instantly loved it. I searched the rest of it and found many more to love. Apparently their history was cut short after the not-so-well-recieved Digimortal, as we all know.

Band split, Fans sad, Called back, Dino ditched, Archetype born.

The first three tracks didn't grab my attention because I am a sucker for Fear Factory's cleanly done sungs, such as "Drones", "Archetype" (Is there anyway not to dig the chorus?), the pretty redundant but good "Bite The Hand That Bleeds", the sweet "Default Judgement", and "Human Shields".

Factory favorites are all over their past albums and some on the new but not as good Transgression, which only tells us what might be instore for the Factory. This would be on my Top 3 FF list, right behind Obsolete, which is eating the dust on Demanufacture.
All three are great, but since this review is on Archetype, I will have to act like a reviewer and tell you to buy this, but you should have done so already.

3 out of 5 stars I LOVE TONEDEFF BUT...........2006-05-19

...but he could've done better. don't get me wrong,i'm not saying this album is wack, but the production is shaky in places. it might be because he did a lot of the production hisself. if he left the production to kno(from cunninlynguists)the album would've been excellent. lyrical tonedeff is almost flawless, but some of his concepts should've been a bit more thought out.plus he has "fillers" throughout the album.songs like "pervert" could've & should've been left off.if you're the type person that listens to hip hop for lyrics you should check this album out,but if you only listen for beats this might not be for you.stand out tracks are "quoteables" & "heavyweight".

5 out of 5 stars Archetype-A long time coming.......2006-05-14

It has been over a year now since Tonedeff dropped his debut full length album 'Archetype', so I thought it was only right that I throw my two cents in. Tone came up through the battle circuit with friend and fellow QN5 label mate PackFM (who is also an extremely talented MC and I urge you to check out his debut album 'whutduzFMstand4?'), but as this album displays he is so much more than a 'battle rapper'. Tone raps, sings and produces his heart out on an album that as I stated was a long time coming, for two reasons. Firstly it took over 5 years for this album to see the light of day, and secondly an album like this has never been made before. The thing that impresses me the most is Tonedeffs vision for the album, he had a very clear idea of the kind of album he wanted to make and how he wanted it to sound. From the get go, you know this is not gonna be your usual hip-hop album, as the first song 'Overture' has no rapping on it at all. It slowly builds with vocal harmonizing and a really dope piano loop. The second track and the first proper 'hip-hop' tune is the title track 'Archetype'. Tone basically lays down that this is the archetype, the first of its kind. Track 7 'Porcelain' is a beautiful song, Tone laces a wonderful beat and raps about a crush he once had on a girl at school. 'Quotables' features the cream of the crop of punchline MC's. Substantial, Session and PackFM who along with Tone make up the group efamm, the very talented Wordsworth, and also Substantial and the criminally underated, Rise, who comes highly recommended. 'Heavyweight' and 'Case Closed' showcase Tonedeffs amazing rapid fire flow and breath control. The end track 'Gathered' has no rapping, but Tone singing beautifully written lyrics to a beautifully produced track. The album is accompanied by a really cool DVD, and includes live footage, music videos and an excellent making of, in which Tone provides commentary for each track, giving us a brilliant insight into the album as a body of work, and shows how much attention was paid to each track and also how amazingly layered the production is, a testament to Tone as a producer, and made me appreciate the album even more. So basically 'Archetype' is an excellent album from a very talented artist and I highly recommend you support Tone along with real hip-hop and purchase a copy for you and anyone you know. Oh and log onto www.qn5.com to check out what else tone and friends have to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Archetypical Perfection.......2006-05-01

The title says it all, but I guess I can elaborate. This Album is something that was direly needed in Hip Hop. There will definitely be more albums like this in the future. And I don't mean there will be more "Archetypes" per say...I mean there will be more Records with the philosophy of this one. If you wanna know the philosophy you'll have to get it. So why are you still reading this....BUY IT ALREADY!

5 out of 5 stars stop sleeping.......2006-03-26

seriosly you need this cd in your collection, i have 2 copies n heading for more soon. it is easily one of my most played albums of all time. it doesnt matter if you dont think you like this "genre" because it cannot be classified as one genre, it is has a very versitile collection of songs put together EXPERTLY. if you love punchines, cop this album. if you love songs with meaning, cop this album. if you love beats cop this album. if you like music COP THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars this is The Archetype.......2006-03-17

This album is what it is.. it's an Archetype. It has all the elements of Hip Hop with some amazing bits of other genres (ex. Electronica) placed in as if they were meant to be there. And unlike some underground artists.. you don't just hear "F these wack mainstream rappers blah blah blah" BS.. You got some intelligent, down-to-earth lyrics (Archetype, Porcelain, Children, etc).. but not some stuff you gotta pull out your Merriam-Webster to try to understand. Plus, some stuff that'll make you want to just jump and lose your F'n mind (Let's Go, Issawn, etc) But why should you buy this? It's not your ordinary Hip Hop CD (as stated in the first sentence). You have some of the most amazingly detailed and perfectly constructed production with the 'the best flow in the game' over 'em. If you love Hip Hop, you'll love this.. And if you're one of those Hip Hop lovers and pass this up.. you have no idea what your skipping over (which will be NOTHING if you DO listen).

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-10-25

Enchanting, beautiful, haunting. I love to listen to this when I am alone. The remix of Exile is particularly well done, and Whispering Trees is the song that made me fall in love with S&E. I cannot think of a group that is even remotely similar to their sound; they are unique.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating and Fresh.......2001-04-17

Soil and Eclipse may not be well known outside of the gothic/industrial/synth realm, but they are a very strong and powerful group. Their music is unique and stands alone among so many other clone type groups. A simple, two person group, Soil and Eclipse mixes haunting, soaring lyrics with dark but snappy beats. Archetype and Meridian are their strongest works. Soil and Eclipse's CDs capture their live performances pretty well, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great album by a great band.......2000-04-14

Soil and Eclipse is one of those rare groups who make truly beautiful music. If you're tired of popular music's boy bands and rap/rock hybrids, Soil&Eclipse is a nice change of pace. Jay's haunting voice makes the listener feel the music, and Child's beautiful keyboard work adds greater depth to the new tracks. Also, the remixes are great, esp. the Nerve Factor one. Truly one the best bands out today.

Album Description

Awesome melodies, catchy refrains, powerful/thrashy riffs and an outstanding technicality from all musicians involved. This Ohio-based band shows how Dream Theatre and Iced Earth put together would sound like - if that should ever happen… Includes two bonus tracks from the 1998 Hands Of Time EP.

4 out of 5 stars Great, crunching, guitar-driven prog Metal.......2007-03-04

This is an excellent prog metal album from start to finish. Unlike many other prog metal acts, these guys can actually write a decent song and even their instrumentals are interesting and well-arranged. This should appeal to both those coming from the Dream Theater direction as well as those more into Thrash metal and bands like Metallica, since there are no keayboard, it's all intertwined, fast, driving guitars. The vocals are a very good too - almost a hybrid of Russel Allen of Symphony X and James LaBrie.

I'd also like to point out that the CD I got in Germany as issued by Limb music (I think that's the label) doesn't have the pops at the beginning of each song as stated below. Perhaps it's my CD player, but I've never had a problem playing this CD, although some of the songs turn into pure noise when I try to load them onto my MP3 player - I assume this must be beacause of the extreme playing time of this cd - over 80 minutes!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Album!.......2006-11-07

Filled with complex, melodic, and catchy passages, this album is amazing from start to finish.

It takes the listener on a journey through maze-like riffs, reinforced by excellent solos and vocals coming from a slight power metal angle. The musicianship displayed by Archetype is exemplary. Listening to these guys pull off this detailed songwriting with such authority and precision is exhilarating!

Very well recorded, every instrument is given equal room to shine, though the bass guitar is slightly in the background, but that is to be expected.

An incredible progressive album on all points. If I were to describe this album in two words, they would be "catchy" and "technical". Assigning only one star to this album is unfair. There is a level of technical ability and songwriting here that must be given its due recognition. Very highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Great music, but the cd's are defective.......2005-05-15

BEWARE- buy the album and enjoy it. The music is pretty good and well focused, but all of the cds are defective, with no idea from the band on when they will be reissued. Spoke to Chris in the band about it. Something about the masters being defective.

The issue is there are loud pops before every song.

As far as the music, it's crunchy, with good time changes, but flows very well at the same time. All of the instruments are clear and well placed. Archetype avoids flashiness and spiraling into nowhere, in favor of good melodies and smooth transitions. Too bad the pops exist on the cds, but if you're willing to deal with it, then get the album. Don't buy it new, however.

I would have rated the album with a four, and that's more like a 4.5, but the popping issue must be factored in. Reissuing the album seems to not be a possibility at this point, since it was just issued.

the best part of this CD is the drumming. Dave K. played drums only on this CD, then he left the band shortly after. he used to play for an awesome Philly band called Self Induced that broke up years ago. he now plays in a kick-[butt] band called Wreck The Day. check 'em out!

5 out of 5 stars The lord giveth the lord taketh away.......2003-01-06

1 word, Insane. I have just about all of their recordings. They get better each time they they make a record. Their live show is crazy. I met them as well I was talking to Luke (Vocals) and I asked him about the next album he was says they were going to explore more and mess around with some stuff. This album is great and anyone that has to the chance to see them live go!

5 out of 5 stars Melodic Metal.......2002-12-10

As I was listening to the NOW OR NEVER sampler of 2001, i happened to stumble upon this band. The song that caught my attention was "in time" just how melodic it was and it was almost beautiful. The next day i picked up the record at the site and it arrived 4 days later. Popped it in on the way to work and was awed in amazement. Definatly check this band out! Stop reading this and BUY THIS RECORD! You won't regret it.
*MUST HAVE FOR ALL METAL/MELODIC LOVERS

5 out of 5 stars i can't stop listening to it........2002-09-24

saw these guys a long while ago with e-town. it's like they were fighting there instruments or something...the new school hardcore. listen to it loud.

5 out of 5 stars Best damn hardcore money can buy.......2002-01-23

These guys are amazing. I was a little skeptic when I heard about one of the vocalists leaving the band, but they still remain to be my favorite hardcore band. I'll admit a lot of the hardcore coming out these days is kinda crappy and trying to convey some "hard" image. These guys are the real deal, when they play, it's pure emotion, you can hear it, and you can see it live. It's not just a bunch of power chords and double bass thrown together either, the musicianship is astounding and it's like nothing you've ever heard before. Parts of it can be described as beautiful, other parts pure aggression.
It's got some cool artwork too. Good work guys, hurry up and play in philly you punkasses!

I like the album. I heard the song "organism" from an internet radio station, which led me to purchase the album. My only disappointment was where I heard "organism", it was a different version then from the album. But I am still happy purchased this album!! This album will definatly keep you going with its clubby beats.
