Up Close and Personal [Explicit Lyrics]

On her debut album, Up Close and Personal, New York radio personality Angie Martinez attempts to step outside her DJ role and into that of an MC. But an unpolished flow and unsophisticated lyrics will hopefully keep Martinez from quitting her day job. Up Close is not a complete flop, however. Martinez may not be a wordsmith, but she knows what one sounds like and had the good sense and connections to include some of hip-hop's biggest names on her album. Martinez is at her best on songs like the capricious Latin-music-inspired "Coast 2 Coast" with Wyclef Jean, and the flirtatious "Mi Amor" with Jay-Z. And to her credit, Martinez holds her own on the independent woman's anthem "Breathe" featuring the lulling vocals of Mary J. Blige and La India. Up Close probably won't be nominated for hip-hop album of the year, but Martinez's obvious love for the music and intelligent choices in collaborators give the album a level of integrity that cannot be denied. --Felicia A. For many years I've been a big fan of blues and jazz and it's been a long time since I heard an acoustic blues record so good. I was so impressed that I had to hear it again and again, especially the opening track TRUCK HOLLER #1 and the second one BLUE FREIGHTLINER and so on no missing the sensational last track TRASHY TRASHMEN. Admittedly, I am in love with electric blues, but I recommend it to
all blues lovers.

I had a Golden opportunity to see Slim at the BayFront Blues Fest in Duluth, MN this summer, MISSED IT, and have been kicking myself ever since. Since I couldn't see him up close and personal, I made the decision to buy his disc ("Up Close and Personal"...hmmm) based on the strength of some samplings from his website. (I'm spinning the disc as I write this.) He's a first-rate resonator player (vintage National), which in itself INSTANTLY attracted me. He's a first-rate songwriter, interjecting humor between lamentations, and a Cynical Old Bastard who's simply loaded with the mojo. I GET this guy: he IS the blues, and I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more!

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and raw blues music without the monotony. .......2004-11-13

This disc is one of those rare blues records that provide everything one would want from blues music without the same old (and often boring) repetitions. Watermelon Slim plays from his heart and with his own singular style. If you're looking for contemporary SRV blues you might like this - especially if you like good roots music. If you like ingenuity in transfering emotions to music in an organic and unmanufactured method this album is a must. 18 tracks and not one that sounds like another simply makes economic sense. As all good blues recording have, you'll find themes of personal demons, struggles with mortality, work and women among others. But like those gems in your collection this is full of the unexpected while staying true to the concept of the 'blues.'

More often than not, I buy records for the music with little thought for the artist. It seems all these songs are autobiographical (even the covers sound as if...) and thus make the personal connection and I find myself happy to support Slim by buying the record in hopes he can continue making more. How often have you had that feeling after purchasing a record?

I'm afraid I don't see much that is redeeming in this cd. Some people like it, that's fine, I'm not sure why. I think it is poorly done and truly not worth bothering with. But if you like it, I have one for sale.
As for the "artist", well I have deleted most all the things I already wrote about her as just personal observation. I don't know her and really don't want to.
It is obvious that she is not a ganster, not a rapper, not an artist and really just a dj hoping to cash in on some local fame.
So like I said, if you like this CD, I have one for sale.

3 out of 5 stars NOT BAD AT ALL........2004-10-29

I bought this CD three years ago and never really listened to it because I thought it was boring at the time. The other day, I placed it into my CD changer and listened to the whole album. This CD is not as bad as I thought it was. It's a good album. As a matter of fact, I think it's a CD that will grow on you if you listen to it a couple of times. Angie doesn't really have the rhyming skills like Foxy, Kim, or Eve but she makes an attempt with some tight beats and famous producers. I see her as an female MC that needs to practice her skills a little more. I give her an "E" for effort. Overall, not bad.

    1 out of 5 stars boring.......2004-02-22

Ok, she might have fame in the US being a radio DJ but in Europe she has no start-off fame and her singles were already rather boring. It's like someone is talking over a record, not rapping. The complete album didn't convince me either.

"She grew up right by the subway, surronding people, she's new tramp but she's not lady, talking that street talk, she the heart and soul of New York city" This is what the intro of the man singing says and it states to be true. Angie Martinez from Hot 97 has finally came out with her debut which has been delayed since 1999. The album features some real Gangsta Hip-Hop/Rap styled. Some hardcore styling. Songs which really stand out are:

New York, New York (featuring DJ Clue and Prodigy) - The first song after the introduction. Gangsta Rap styled. Angie and Prodigy spit some bars about NYC. DJ Clue just does his shout which may irritate some people but he really produced a good track.

Live At Jimmy's (featuring Sunkiss etc.) - It's hot Latin styled flavored song. Shows that she got love for her fellow Latino brothers and sisters. Big Pun appears in this track. Angie does hot verses.

No Playaz (featuring Lil' Mo and Tony Sunshine) - This track is a chilled out R&B/Hip-Hop. Tells the brotha's what Angie wants. A real man, no playaz for her. Lil' Mo sings beautifully on this track and Angie and Tony do a very good interlude at the end!

Go (M********a) - This track is some REEL Gangsta Rap. She explains a relationship she had with some playa who just took her for a hoe. He don't think that she's anything. So she's just spitting back at him on how she feels about what he just done to her.

Dem Thangz, Dem Thangz (featuring Q-Tip) - Her debut single. Very good. All about the clubs. One of the first songs that the Neptunes produced for a female. Q-Tip does he's sing/rap style on this track alongside Angie's rappin.

Overall, this album is off da hook. It's about Angie's life cuz it's UP, CLOSE AND PERSONAL.

I must say I truly fell in love with this album more for the fact that both of my favorite kinds of music are blended together with such a perfect mix of both.
Latin styles with hip hop under and over tones, this album was done very very well, and I wish I could give Angie a 10 star rating!
She's honest in her music and anyone who really appreciates music, thugged out styles and latin over flows, then your gonna be in a good place when you check this album out..
Angie raps and sings absolutely beautifully, with lots of guest vocals through out the whole album, everyone will have a favorite on it.
    Adious!
    enjoy!

Once I saw Angie on the "Not Tonight Remix" from the Nothing to Lose Soundtrack, I knew she had it. With her first single, "Dem Thangz" got me kinda curious of what she had. It was addictively well-written with lyrics you learn the 3rd time thru! My fav song on the LP is where she lays down the chorus between the INVINCIBLE rhyming of The Lox, Beanie Sigel, Brett, & the legendary Kool G Rap! Other songs she shows her latin flavor on is "Suavamente" with Wyclef Jean where she flows irresistably. Another is "Live At Jimmy's" where Cuban Link tinges the song with Puerto-Rican flavor. Songs that you will probably end up loving are "Gutter 2 TheFancy Ish" with Busta Rhymes, "Mi Amor" with Jay-Z and his ghetto rhyming, and "Thug Love" with Fat Joes Thugness. One track that really stands out from the rest is the skit/song "Silly N***az" where the girlz hit it HARD! Overall a great freshmen effort for this BABE! COp it fo sho!

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get More Ghetto Than This.......2001-06-11

It's amazing on how easy it is for radio personalities to come out with an album nowadays. In this case, New York City radio personality Angie Martinez has decided to join the already crowded market of female emcees in producing an album that is pure garbage from the start. My only questions when it comes to this album's existence is "Why?"

It is true that Lil' Kim is the leader of the pack when it comes to female rappers with major recognition, but Angie? Let's get real, Angie sounds better talking on the radio than rapping. Not even all the stars on this album could save this album from the disaster it was to become. At least Amil had some recognition for a while, but Angie should not even think about quitting her day job anytime soon. As a misrepresentation of Latino culture, Angie boasts that "rap music" is aesthetic to the identity of Puerto Ricans and many other Latino nationalities. Personally, if you heard this album, and are Latino you will even be ashamed to associate Ms. Martinez to the major Latin boom happening in popular culture.

Not even the divine voice of La India or the rap contributions of many major-name rappers (please note that every song on this album has a rapper lending his/her vocals in order to carry the song through; Ms. Martinez is not even credited in carrying one entire song by herself, which for many in the music industry is not a good sign of talent)can save this debut. Also there is no need for all the expletives on this album. Music is supposed to be about talent and enjoyment, not about cursing and offending.

As for this album, I wouldn't even waste a cent of your hard earned money on this album. Save your money and invest it wisely. As for this album, keep an eye out for it in the bargain bin at your local record shop. It is truly one of 2001's major musical disapointments!

      5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2001-05-12

I am not much of a fan of hip hop/rap music with the exception of OutKast, and now Angie Martinez. Out of curiousity I picked up a copy of "Up Close & Personal" and much to my surprise, I found myself bobbing my head along to the music. I remember seeing Angie in Lil' Kim's video for "Not Tonight" a few years ago and being impressed by her emcee skills. What really struck me about Angie's solo debut is how melodic each songs are which latin music can take credit for. Each song just is amazingly melodic which I rarely hear in what little rap music I hear by accident. "Live At Jimmy's" is my very favorite track off the album. It's a feel good, party song, definitely makes for a good summer song. I really liked how she had both rap and latin artists rap/sing on this song together. Not a fan of Jay-Z but I thought he did extremely well on "Mi Amor", another favorite song off the album. I'll admit that Jay-Z has skills as a rapper but up until "Mi Amor" I wasn't terribly impressed. Overall I see "Up Close & Personal" as an excellent album to play during the summer as well as all year round.

Prime Cuts: Never Be Alone Again, Dance Me Outside, Walking on the Moon

Sheer beauty needs no embellishments. Strapped with just an acoustic guitar, this sonically scanty CD finds its charm in Moffatt's vocals. With a vocal twin-like resemblance to fellow country artist Janie Fricke, Moffatt has that well-weathered worn timbre in her voice that shimmers with emotions especially on the album's more plaintive moments. This is a fleet only an elite few amongst the genre are capable of. Recorded live in the fall of 2002 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Moffatt here tackles some of her more popular numbers in her repertoire to a few covers from mostly more roots-Americana artists (such as Holly Near, Bonnie Raitt) to more traditional stuff (such as Jimmie Rodgers and Eddy Arnold). Overall, regardless of the genesis of these paeans, Moffatt sings them as if she owns them: breathing life, nurture and care to each note making sure they resonate with a cadence that is limpid as well as personal.

Among the album's highlights is the ode to romance written by Moffatt and Tom Russell: "Dance Me Outside" which was first recorded as a duet with elder brother Hugh, here only features Moffatt alone. Nevertheless, its conversational lyrics and its earnest plea for intimacy are deftly captured by Moffatt. And to prove that simplicity is the key to great music, "Walking on the Moon," an introspective number about a girl trying to articulate her first love to her mother, is given a stunning performance. Even when romance has turned sour, Moffatt sings with a bite on the aggressively upbeat "Ruin This Romance." But perhaps one of the most moving performances come on the autobiographical ballad "Never Be Alone Again." Moffatt's half teary vocals here is breathtaking; this can only come from the stark loneliness of being an itinerant songstress.

However, not everything is introspectively balladry, brother Hugh Moffatt's "Papacita" has a south of the border feel magically created by Moffatt and her guitar alone. And she does get aggressive on Bonnie Raitt's assertive "Love Me Like A Man." Owing a debt to Melissa Etheridge, Moffatt's take of the feministic "Sojourner Truth" has a bluesy-rock snarl. Giving us a slice of life, Holly Near's "My Man's Been Laid Off" deals with unemployment, a much neglected theme in country music. Although "My Man's Been Laid Off" is a relatively new composition, but it sounds so traditional that it could pass muster for one of those Great Depression tunes.

On the other hand, as a "live" CD, Moffatt's interaction with her audience is at best reticent. Besides the repeated "thank yous" after many of the songs, she doesn't seem very prolix. Besides the obligatory clapping after each song, her audience seems bashful and uninvolved. Unlike Wynonna's recent live CDs where she gives "sermonlets" between songs, besides minimal commentaries here and there, Moffatt doesn't provide much information behind the stories of her songs. Other than such a minor quibble, this is a stellar effort from one of the best country-folk artists around. And with a voice like Moffatt, together her guitar, such a combination is top notched copacetic.

4 out of 5 stars Nice intimate performances.......2005-10-03

A very nice glimpse of Katy in concert-- just her and guitar. And since she has one
of the fine voices in country/folk music, it's a real treat. The intimacy I think works
very well esp. on ballad ones like "Borderline," but also on the smokin' bluesy, "Love Me Like a Man" "Crazy Dangerous & Blue" & others. Not a substitute for her studio albums, or even as good as many of those like "Evangleine Hotel' or "Angel Town," but a fine addition for fans & her voice really hasn't lost the appeal it had in the mid-'70's. Nice variety of pace. Good stuff IMO.

          Album Description

Recorded by Shawn Murphy at Todd AO and O'henry Sound Studios, and produced by RRRRRRRobin and Quyen Nguyen, this New Age/Easy Listening tour de force elevates the genre to new levels of sophistication, power, and emotion.

From his rip-roaring arrangement of the Silver Connection's `Fly RRRRRRRobin Fly,' featuring twelve of the hottest violinists in L.A., to the haunting and emotional title track `Passion,' featuring Leland Sklar on bass, Randy Kerber on keyboards, John Goux on guitar, and Bob Zimmitti on drums along with RRRRRRRobin's Angels—Violinists Kathie Lenski, Sara Parkins, Rachel Stegeman, and Josefina Vergara. The other tracks include all of the aforementioned studio superstars and a special appearance on several songs by Latin percussion sensation Luis Conte. There is a shockingly intimate performance of the Gounod Ave Maria that some have said is worth the price of the album.

RRRRRRRobin's arrangement of the theme from Young Frankenstein is a beautiful tribute to the memory of Hollywood Concertmaster Gerald Vinci; and the gorgeous duet, `Love Inside' between RRRRRRRobin and Grammy award-winning violinist Kathie Lenski has moved many to tears. This stunning debut album also features a string orchestra comprised of the best, most sought after players in the business.

`Passion' is an up close and personal musical tale, baring the artist's heart and soul. It was recorded by and with good friends. Positive energy and happiness prevailed during the sessions and it shines through in the album.

RRRRRRRobin says that all was harmonious in the studio—well—except for the time when Randy came into the booth at Todd AO after some lengthy and devilishly difficult overdub passages in the track `Slap Me,' and Leland Sklar, (who wears a beard down to his belly) quipped: "Gee Randy, I think I was clean shaven when you started that overdub." Shawn made a joke about the song title and Randy looked sideways at him and said: "It makes me wanna slap RRRRRRRobin."

Rest assured, no violinists were harmed in the making of this album.

It was a labor of love, a dream project. Every detail was painstakingly sorted out. RRRRRRRobin even commissioned a painting for the cover!

Have a listen to RRRRRRRobin, his Angels, and The Dream Band. Take time out from the ordinary, the been-done, and the planned-for-profit pop. Escape into RRRRRRRobin's world, a world of real music played in real time by real musicians.
