Chris Rock may get the laughs onscreen, but Down to Earth's musical directors are quick to make sure that the music is no laughing matter. Tracks incorporate '70s soul influences (Ruff Endz learned Stevie Wonder well) through modern rap and R&B. Several top-shelf names (Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill) add established tunes to the proceedings; 1993's "Gin and Juice" remains an ominous example of West Coast hip-hop's climb to fame with seductive singalongs accompanying Dr. Dre's lo-slung G-funk. There's also plenty more to explore. Sticky Fingaz, featuring Eminem, set down pounding rhythmic trills to underscore "What If I Was White." Monica and Kelly Rowland (of Destiny's Child) serve up orchestrated romantic pop--a genre that lapses into lifeless parody whenever the grooves sag and/or the singer is too indistinct to rise above the occasion (3LW's "Never Let Go"). Random missteps aside, Down to Earth serves up a dance party for those who prefer to take it slow. --Rob O'Connor

For the first five minutes of Down to Earth, one feels like cracking open the champagne to celebrate a triumphant return. To a deliciously dirty blues riff that sounds like Led Zeppelin getting hot and sweaty with prime Black Sabbath, "Gets Me Through" finds Ozzy deconstructing his showbiz persona in a Robbie Williams-turns-rock-god style: "I'm not the kind of person you think I am . . . I try to entertain you the best I can." It's a brilliant track that's at least partially a parody, yet it rocks like a bastard. The rest of the album, however, isn't quite up to the opener's high standards. "Facing Hell," while a fine foot-stomper, is stuffed with horror clichés. The same goes for "Black Illusion" and "Can You Hear Them." The album really goes off the rails, though, with "Dreamer" where Ozzy weeps about global warming and "You Know," in which our hero apologizes to his kids. But even at its worst Down to Earth displays enough eccentricity to keep one entertained and brimming with respect. --Ian Watson

I give "Down To earth" 5 stars due to the fact it was better than most if not all music in this category in its release in 2001. There really is some good songs here "Gets Me Through", "Alive" "Facing Hell" "Junkie","Running Out Of Time" and a two really good ballads "Dreamer" and "You Know pt.1" to name a few. Zakk Wyldes guitaring sounds awesome as he always does. Former Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin does a great job on drums. Robert Trujillo on Bass, gave this cd a whole new sound. I give Ozzy one thing, he got together a good band lineup. Say what you want, corporate Ozzy, sellout Ozzy, this is a well crafted recording. There is a little of something from "Blizzard Of Oz to "No More Tears" in "Down to Earth". Great recording well written songs and very well produced by Tim Palmer and praise to engineer Mark Dearnley and assistant engineer Jamie Sickora. I heard "Down To Earth" when it came out in 2001 and over looked it as just another new Ozzy recording. "Down to Earth" has grown on me in the last six years since its release.

No, this may not be the greatest Ozzy album, but since when does an Ozzy album need to be his greatest to earn 5 stars? Even if this is the worst Ozzy album, it is still better than 95% of the music released in 2001, and still an album worth listening to.

well it is ozzy and all, but it seemed like he was just making an album to please his record company. there are some memorable parts but most of it is weak. this is for the diehard ozzy fans. if you're just starting out, i'd go with the blizzard of ozz...

This is not one of Ozzy's better solo efforts. In fact, its his worst. Its lifeless and bland. The songs are weak and the production tries too hard to compensate. Who wrote these songs? Sharon? Kelly? Lets hope Ozzy has more creativity left than this clunker would indicate.

As a whole, this is a lot better than Ozzmosis but still pales in comparison to Ozzy's best work (Diary, Blizzard, Sabotage) and sadly, that's what his work should be compared to and not his worst.

I'm not sure why Ozzy loves Zak so much. Maybe it's security? Zak is a good player but IMO he just totally lacks in the leadership and songwriting skills. His solo-project work is a lot more authentic than anything he does with Ozzy and I wonder why Ozzy doesn't hear it. Steve Martin had a joke years ago about everything from McDonalds tasting the same as though it came from a big "vat"... even the change due! And that is precisely what I hear when I hear Zak Wylde. Same lame squeels, same generic bar chords, yadda... There must be someone SOMEWHERE that has an authentic quality to them that can get Ozzy out of this "corporate sounding" generic and scripted haze. These songs sound like they came straight down a conveyer and lack any sort of "spontenaity". The sad thing is; Ozzy's voice sounds quite strong and crisp, the production has some punch, but it is all wasted on reworked lyrics (wished I'd starting walking before I ran? Hmm...) and uninspired songs. "Dreamer" sounds like a weak effort at an "Imagine" style song and even the beginning of it sounds almost identical to the beginning of "Running Out Of Time", another song on this same cd! The rockers here do rock, but No More Tears was even better in this area.

I have listened to Diary and Blizzard MORE THAN a thousand times and still am not tired of it, this will wear on you in a week... or less. S.A.T.O. this is N.O.T.O.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Purple Rainbows? (Part II).......2007-02-15

First thing first: My actual rating for this would be 4.5 stars, but since i can't put that... If you read my review of Deep Purple's two pack of "Burn/Stormbringer", then you already have an idea of what I'm going to say. This is a great CD, with awesome songs and great playing, but...is this still Rainbow? I mean... Ritchie Blackmore left DP in 1975 because he didn't like the funkier direction they were heading into, and formed Rainbow with singer Ronnie James Dio. Over the course of 3 records(4 if you count their live CD), THEY invented a new type of heavy rock: big, grandiose, symphonic inspired music, with medieval, renaissance, fantastic imagery in their lyrics, in turn inspiring the euro-metal wave led by Iron Maiden a couple of years later (Maiden founder/bassist Steve Harris is a major Rainbow fan)which still lingers proudly in Europe to this day. But then, in an inexplicable change of heart, Blackmore decided to once again change direction and forsake their trademark brand of music. Rainbow was always a "musical chairs" band, suffering major lineup changes from record to record, but the departure of Dio over this change in direction definitely marked the closing of an era.

Kiss the dragons and dungeons lyrics goodbye , welcome the radio friendly, tender... ballads? Yes, you heard me, ballads!Enter Graham Bonnet. After failing to convince Ian Gillan to join Rainbow, Blackmore then recruited a newcomer, enlisted the help of former DP bandmate Roger Glover as bassist AND producer, and rounded up the lineup with survivor Cozy Powell on drums and Don Airey on keyboards. The change in musical direction is pretty brutal, but still, I find this brand of rock very much enjoyable (as opposed to the AOR direction the band would adopt subsequently with Joe Lynn Turner...don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with AOR, it's just not my type of music...) Yes, the faces are different, but listening to this CD, sometimes I could swear some of these songs were written for the Stormbringer sessions: listen to "Lady Double Dealer" from Stormbringer and then to "No time to Lose", "Love's No friend", "Danger Zone" and tell me if I'm wrong... Only the tandem vocals of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes are missing here! And then you have the aforementioned ballads, 2 to be exact: "Making Love" & "Since you've been gone", that will remind you to Stormbringer's "Soldier of Fortune", not so much in their sound, but rather in their definite commercial appeal. The first one is the best, in my opinion, but the latter would actually become the band's first hit.

I insist, this record is great for everyone: if you like DP, you will like it. If you like Dio era Rainbow(the best, if you ask me...), you will still like it, musical direction change notwithstanding. And if you simply like good music, you'll love it. The reason why I rate it 4.5 and not 5 stars is simply because I feel that the record sounds a little too much like Mk III Deep Purple, and therefore, a little redundant: I mean, why start a new band if you're gonna sound like your old band, right? But if you don't care about this, you will enjoy this a great deal. This is the last Rainbow record that I truly, really enjoy. Get it!

Down to Earth came out in 1979 and featured the vocals of Graham Bonnet who was and still is a real hunk (I don't know about his brain but he looks all right--haha) and has an amazing voice. One of the many great vocalists in Rainbow's history. Of the eight tracks on this album, five I would consider to be excellent while three I could take or leave. I don't like this album as much as I like 1982's Straight Between the Eyes with Joe Lynn Turner, but it is a very good record from that time just before the glorious 1980s. Plus, it features Ritchie Blackmore, of course, so you know it rocks.

"All Night Long" (3:49): Hard rockin' opener about a groupie who knows just what (rather who) she wants. "I need a girl who can keep her head all night long" indeed. You also gotta like the line "Don't know about your brain but you look all right." Honesty in a rock song, what more could you want?
"Eyes of the World" (6:36): Complex, epic track, almost progressive. Amazing vocal performance and cool keyboards at the bridge. A lot of depth to this one.
"No Time To Lose" (3:41): The drums are actually my favorite part of this song. Too much good time rock n roll sound for my tastes. One of my least favorites.
"Makin' Love" (4:36): I really like the verses to this track. It is a slower-paced number. Bonnet sings with a lot of passion. I also like how the drums kick into the bridges.

"Since You've Been Gone" (3:10): Nice, short, radio-friendly single. Very catchy with addictive guitar riffs. I'm not sure how well it has aged. I guess it might be considered cheesy today, but I still think it kicks.
"Love's No Friend" (4:52): I'm not that crazy about this song. It is slow and plodding and kind of drags.
"Danger Zone" (4:30): I do not like the chorus on this track. The verses are better with the driving guitar notes and the guitar solo is a highlight as well. The background vocals are annoying and it's repetitive at the end.
"Lost in Hollywood" (4:51): Definitely ends the album on a positive note. This track flat out rocks! Bonnet's vocals kick major you-know-what.

Not quite perfect, but very very good........2006-08-25

Since the 'Long Live' album, Rainbow is practically a different band now. Some members have been replaced (most noticably Dio, who went on to Black Sabbath) and the music and lyrics have changed rather radically. This album is much more mainstream and written to appeal to a much broader audience than the previous dungeons/dragons type themes.
Now, I loved the Dio-era Rainbow, but this one is great as well. Just in a different way. Basically, I'll keep this short. This album is much more of a pop album and was written for hits/mainstream acceptance. Nonetheless, it was done well. The songs are catchy, the new vocalist (Graham Bonnet) is good and Ritchie Blackmore sounds great. An excellent album as far as guitar playing goes and an excellent album is most other aspects as well. Enjoy.

Best Rainbow CD.......2006-04-20

I have all the Rainbow cds, and I'm a big Dio fan, but this is my favorite Rainbow cd. All the songs are good, with great music, great production, and awesome singing. I love the way Graham Bonnett put so much emotion into his singing on this cd.

Rainbow - 'Down To Earth' (Polydor).......2006-03-31

Originally released in 1979, as this was Rainbow's fourth 'actual' album. Unfortunately,Ronnie James Dio's replacement for frontman / lead vocalist, Graham Bonnet just does NOT fit the bill. Not even close. 'Down To Earth' was the only Rainbow lp that Bonnet appeared on.Thank goodness for that. For some reason(s), I've personally never cared that much for him. Upside is that former Purple mate, bassist Roger Glover joins Ritchie Blackmore and Rainbow, so some of the tunes here are (how should I say it?)somewhat memorable. Like, "All Night Long"(the old MTV video is okay), "No Time To Lose", "Since You've Been Gone" and "Love's No Friend". Pretty much for Deep Purple, Blackmore and Rainbow die-hards.

How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

After one of the finest progressive rock masterpieces "Remember The Future" the guys from Nektar had to decide the direction of their next project. Do you continue with the theme record and the longer tracks or attempt something different? Nektar went with the alternate route and along with "Sounds Like This" comes their most underrated achievement.

1974's "Down To Earth" with Hawkwind friend Robert Calvert acting as ringmaster for the progressive circus is a tremendous listen. "Astral Man" is in its proper place as the album opens. Offering the perfect combination of catchy instrumentation with a great vocal, the three-minute tune would be superlative on stage as well. "That's Life" is a work of art. The beauty of the song comes alive each listen. "Fidgety Queen" is in your face Nektar rock and roll with no apologies needed. "Oh Willy" can be thought of as a shorter version of "A Day In The Life Of A Preacher" from "Sounds Like This." In short form it still takes hold of your body. The album builds momentum and by the time the eighth track rolls around "Show Me To Way" you are elevated to an even higher level of musical brilliance. Make sure to please purchase the remaster with 6 alternate versions and some Robert Calvert ringmaster outtakes!

If you are looking for the first Nektar CD to purchase any order of "Remember The Future", "Recycled", or "A Tab In The Ocean" will surpass your expectations. Once you have absorbed the wizardry, next should be "Journey To The Center Of The Eye", "Sounds Like This", and "Down To Earth." Those would cover the original Roye Albrighton catalog. "Magic Is A Child" with Dave Nelson stepping in takes a different approach but still a must own. You then will have several reunion choices and Roye solo projects to engulf.

we were on the way to get 'white pizza'(no tomato sauce) in a ritzy cul-de-sac and on the way i thought, Well, since i don't have a car myself, and she does, i'll just plop my NEKTAR tape into her player and won't she be enticed,'eh?
so i did and about two minutes into the Gently Slip Away
she noticed the album
really noticed it and said
"What kind of Crapola are you playing on my brand new tape player, anyhow? and can you turn it down, please? like NOW?"
that didn't bode well at all
the album that opened my head
(we didn't see each other much after that blunt trauma, as you can well imagine....)

It has been many years since I even thought about Nektar. My first encounter with the group was with this album, "Down To Earth". I saw them some thirty years ago in a half sold out movie theater in Garden City. They were phenomenal.

The album is just as good, if not better than I remembered it to be all those years ago. It's a concept album, it's a prog rock album, it's melodic. it's great. You can hear their influences and yet the music is uniquely their own.

Fabulous, and one of my Favorite Nektar albums.......2005-03-05

Totally original and self contained musical environment. For those who want to understand what "progressive" means, listen to this and other great Nektar albums. THese guys pratically invented the concept. This particular album is in my view at least, one of their 2 best. Remember the Future of course broke all the molds for the time, but this one, was a true concept album. Most of their others were either good or great, but this one is fabulous.

They were experimental, radical and conservative at the same time. Listen to this collection, and hear zillions of styles. And then look at the year of its creation, and think about what else was being recorded back then. Lots of clone radio music, and some adventurous ideas, but not much this out there. Genesis even started to tighten their range in this period.

This is awesome music, for any student of the era.

A nice follow-up to REMEMBER THE FUTURE.......2005-02-05

Actually....my guess is, these tracks came from the same writing session as "Remember"....the nice thing about Nektar...after they clicked on a sound and style that proved successful...instead of running them into the ground with a slew of clone followup albums (ie. as with bands like JOURNEY, BAD COMPANY, JETHRO TULL) they moved on to new unchartered territories....Isn't that what "progressive rock" is supposed to be all about???? (key word here is PROGRESS) If you dont move on and explore....it isn't progressive...'nuff said on that.

Once again reference is made that these guys are a Beatles influenced band....I would have to say....the Beatles influence here, as with all their albums...is very minimal...THEY SOUND LIKE NEKTAR...Now...for good or bad reasons....that kind of originality and honesty to ones own style should not go unnoticed....sadly in a day when clone bands seem to all jump on media bandwagons..to sell records...and get rich..some bands place a higher regard on staying true to their art and convictions....how can you go wrong with a band like that????

I'm really glad to know these guys survived and are still around.

The production was a little bit lacking, and Jimmy's vocals were a bit unrefined, but the music makes a nice addition for any collection.

Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.
