Ludacris--2, Bill O'Reilly--1. The dis is mightier than the sword, and Ludacris wastes no time berating Fox News pundit Bill O'Reilly (O'Reilly enticed Pepsi to cut Ludacris off their payroll citing his lyrical irresponsibility). On "Blow It Out," he taunts his conservative right-winged adversary with lines like, "…I'ma start my own beverage/it will calm your nerves/Pepsi, The New Generation/Blow it out ya ass." Likewise, on "Hoes In My Room," a slick souled-out collabo with Snoop, he wonders aloud who could have possibly let all of these revolting groupies into his room, post-concert. O'Reilly, who else? To Ludacris' credit, his third album is more sonically fluid and versatile than Word of Mouf. From the hypnotic first single "Stand Up" to the classy "Diamond in the Back" (yeah, we'll forgive him this time for utilizing that vastly overused William Devaughn sample) large chunks of the album are highly listenable…subject matter notwithstanding. By the second half of the album he goes full-on debauchery, flipping bushels of potty-mouthed rhymes in poor taste; "Teamwork" is his audio rendition of what a ménage a trois might feel and sound like, while on "Hip Hop Quotables" he spits about 64 bars with no hooks, once explaining why he can't find the right lady ("…a lot of y'all are more stuck up than tampons"). Yep, as with any Ludacris record, this one comes with a big phat caveat. If you're not down with the hoes and Heineken (please refer to one-half of album title), you might wanna cop this album and the new Jeru the Damaja for some balance. --Dalton Higgins

Album Description

This album is a southern mix of rock, blues, country, jazz and funk. The main artist, Patrick Smith, is a Mississippi native raised on the old Hwy 61 blues circuit. His influences are southern rock artists like Charlie Daniels and the Allman Bros. to funk and soul artists like Stevie Wonder. The record has special guests: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, North Miss Allstars, Randall Bramlett, John Keane, and Jimbo Mathus. It was recorded at John Keane Studios in Athen, GA and Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN. This record has everything from a country rock sound to a staight up jazz sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!!.......2007-08-02

If you have never heard of the Patrick Smith Band, you are missing a lot of good music! I first heard them at the Natchez Balloon Fest in October 2006 and they blew my socks AND shoes off. I immediately went to his website and bought the CD. It has a variety of music genres on it and all of them will get your blood moving. It is almost impossible to sit still while listening to it. He only has one CD out now, but hopefully, he will put another one out soon. I will buy that one as well. Do yourself a favor and get this CD. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Some very good music from Mississippi.......2006-02-28

OK, so I'm biased again. Mississippi has turned out some good musicians and singers (including Elvis). This is another local musician I am acquainted with. He has been playing in clubs since he was a teenager, and is one of the best keyboardists in the region (he also does acoustic guitar on one cut, and I remember one evening when he was sitting in on drums). His band represented the region at the IBC in Memphis in 2005.

This CD has 13 cuts, mostly originals by Patrick Smith, but also composed by J. Mathus, R. Moore, and M. Gray, with some additional collaboration by W. Aldridge and G. Humphries. Most of the vocals are by Patrick, who also does the piano/organ work. Other musicians include Rodney Moore on guitar, Jimbo Mathus on guitar (and vocals), and a number of others on guitar, bass, horns, drums, and backing vocals.

It's a good collection at a reasonable price. It was recorded at John Keane Studios assisted by Jeffery Reed at Taproot Audio Design.

5 out of 5 stars Foot tapping music!.......2004-08-25

I bought the Patrick Smith Band deput album the first day it came out. I can tell you that it is one of the BEST albums I've ever listened to. It has a wonderful mix of music with a beat that you can't help but tap your foot to. I would recommend this CD to anyone who is fan of country, rock, blues, funk or jazz. It has something to offer everyone. Happy Listening!

      5 out of 5 stars I likes Chicken, I likes Beer.......2005-08-27

So this may be the greatest album I've ever listened to. I drink a great amount of beer. I'm usually 5 sheets to the hurricane by the time I walk in the office. Nothing beats being plastered on miller lite at your office job. I'm usually slurring my speech in an important meetings and have installed bumpers along the walls so I don't hurt myself walking down the hall. Some of my decision making isn't really great when I'm hammered, according to my boss. I gave this hot chick a $32 an hour raise one day because she looked totally hot. I found out the next day, she was kind of bigger than I thought. I had to tell her I couldn't give her the raise, but if I'm drunk I might sleep with her. I guess that is called sexual harrassment. My excuse was that I was drunk and didn't know what I was saying. So we've established that I love beer, now on to chicken. I could eat Popeyes spicy chicken for every meal, it's that freakin good. I'll bring a 13 piece bucket into work with me in the morning with a sixer and I'll spend the whole day scarfing down chicken and drinking cold ale. I never wash my hands so it looks like I rubbed crisco on my keyboard because it's so greasy. All my work computer is really fo is surfing porn. I'll cruise porn, hammered off my butt with greasy chicken fingers from 9(I come in late) to 4(I leave early). My coworkers love me because I help the bottom line. Free Chicken? MMMMMM Free Beer? MMMMMM. Folks, we've got a winner.

3 out of 5 stars Dr Hook does the Funk.......2004-06-04

Not for the blues purest. Strickly for the fans of Mr. Hooker. Not my fav CD but still captures his musical stylings.

5 out of 5 stars Make it Funky!.......2000-10-11

This album is one of the most excellent oddities in the Boogie King's catalogue. This is best described as John Lee Hooker does a funk album. Definitely not for blues purists. There are a few straight up and down blues numbers like 'Settin' on top of the world', and 'Five Long Years', but other numbers find John dropped straight into a well-oiled, psychedlic funk machine (replete with violin solos!). I'd recommend this album to open minded John Lee Hooker fans, and also those who are into Funkadelic. 5 star weirdness.

5 out of 5 stars How can you go past free beer and chicken?.......2000-02-17

Hello there... This is an excellent heavy party album - sit around by the camp fire, drink beer and don't bother talking cause the music will drown you out. John Lee Hooker at his best. I'm only a 20 something - but I love it - so does my Dad - bridge that hippy generation gap with this one...
