Bottle of Humans

Much-maligned MC Sole finally delivers his long-awaited debut, a 70-minute exercise in progressive wordplay and next-level beats. Alongside Anticon labelmates Dose-One, Jel, and the Sebutones, Sole has helped inaugurate a movement toward new, more experimental styles of hip-hop. His rhymes are born in the anxieties and stress of a broke twentysomething and the creative extremes that keep him going. A melancholy wash of strings imprints the title track in listeners' minds, and be sure to check the horrific crunch of the introspective "Dismantling of Sole's Ego." The heavy, military rhythm of "Famous Last Words" crushes everything in its path and "Sole Has Issues" is a lyrically deft trip through dreams deferred. With a cohesive collection of in-house, Anticon-produced beats and guest spots, Bottle is an impressive debut and a good primer for anyone interested in these oddballs. --Hua Hsu

The heart and sole of Anticon ... 4.5 Stars.......2005-04-29
"I've got a thousand ways to say nothing," Sole yells out in the album opener. I can't help but connect that phrase to most of the artists on Anticon. They bring something new and totally unconventional to the table, that scares a lot of people away; including myself. But Sole, founder of Anticon, is definitely the cream of the crop as far as the Anticon label is concerned. When listening to artists such as Pedestrian, or Dose-One, the lyrics are ridiculously incomprehensible; you have to wonder if the artist even knows what their talking about. Sole is much different in that respect. He actually raps about his life, feelings, and things he's familiar with. He flows with a lot of anger, pain, desire and feeling. It's all wrapped up in a dark autobiography. His tone is varied in overwhelming earnest self-deprecation. Sole has a lot of ideas though, and they are laid out quite nicely this epic 73-minute album.
"Dismantling of Soles Ego" kicks off the album nicely with one of many interesting concepts. "I don't rap on bumper stickers, I'm witty with 40-liners" Sole yells out on the second cut. My favorite track as got to be the tongue twisting darkness of "Famous Last Words". "Center City" featuring Why? is also one of my favorites; but like Dose-One, I wouldn't be to interested to hear a whole Why? album. Other highlights include "Suicide Song" and "MC Howard Hughes".
Sole has combined the strange, minimalist darkness that Anticon is known for, with his accessible charismatic personality. Personally, I wish Anticon would wake up and start releasing more albums like this, instead of working the artsy, "I'm the weirdest rapper out there" angle. It also helps that Sole's voice isn't suffering from helium inhalation.
A Rap Masterpiece?.......2005-03-29
I usually don't care for rap/hip-hop, except when comically thudding the base out the car windows, flashing gang signs at the 8-year-old neighbors and pretending to be the pimpin' scourge of the town. Yes, it's good fun.
Sole is not a ganster; he is more of a creative "loser". Basically all the songs are stating in some obscure way or another that he doesn't like anyone and is unhappy with life. I like it! "Save the Children" is really a cool song, no other way of putting it. "I Don't Rap on Bumper Stickers" is another classic with original, honest lyrics. "Suicide Note" is catchy and bizarre as hell. This is rap for people who hate rap.
4.5 Stars - More Than an "Ego Maniacal " Artist.......2004-11-26
First off, Sole didn't come out of nowhere with his free-associational, non-pareil Anticon style. He did release an album back in 94 which was recorded in New York City, and features a more straight forward emcee approach. Sole was even signed to Rawkus for a period, before he got fed up with the label and decided to embark on one of his own.
This iteration of Sole is chock full of metaphors, ego bashing and in many ways the album is confessional. Instead of rhyming about trivial topics, Sole branches out in a fashion that is in many ways a 360 degree variation of what is popular or accessible for many heads. This is not to imply that his artistry is a sham or inauthentic as some reviewers evidently feel. "Save the Children" is a song whose content would probably put off most musicians. Sure one must "peel back the layers" to comprehend it, but the message is there and it is strong indeed.
Depression is another uneasy subject which Sole addresses in several songs, and he tackles it in the same fashion as labelmate Alias, which is through introspection and rhymes that are heavily metaphorical and interpretive. A method that many artists choose to employ in their efforts to convey their melancholic emotions.
Sole's style is loquacious and complex, but this is not a detriment to his album (s). "Bottle Of Humans" is a fascinating listen for the most part, its momentum only occasionally burdened by sub-par material. Anticon and its associates are truly representative of an alternative to hip-hop's boorish world of bling and faux conscious artists set to beats that are equally sedating. Perhaps not an "advancement of hip-hop" overall, but it certainly takes the music down new avenues of self-expression.
Another great, albeit scarce, release is Man's Best Friend which came out a year ago. A sequel is even floating around out there, and worth the effort to locate.

Sole is not your everyday artist...i must say i am not a fan of Aesop Rock or any of the Anticon members...but Sole is different. i really liked his lyrics and the production is well done. I find Sole to be way better than Sage Francis, Aesop Rock and many others. Hes not the greatest lyricist like Ras kass, Chino XL, etc...but he has a powerful poetic vision. Mos Def is a great poet/rapper...he's on of my favs...same with Illogic but Sole is alot different. i dont mean in a bad way, but his lyrics make you think....Aesop Rock's lyric is full of gibberish same with Sage Francis (MOST OF THE TIME NOT ALWAYS)...Sole is actually understandable and when you think...his lyrics can mean different things if seen in different perspectives.
Lyrics 9.5/10
Production: 8.5/10
"I've got a thousand ways to say Nothing...".......2004-08-30
Please read my review of Anticon's Music... for a better (and longer) retort to the "pseud bashers", but anyway, I just wanted to point out that Sole is an MC, true to heart, rhyming for the sake of RIDDLING. Which, most of these 20-something college grads wouldn't know anything about, as they're not listening to Anticon for the right reasons, they hear one Dose One verse (and that's all it f***ing takes, he spews garbage) and immediately discard the entire lable's roster of artists. But clearly, they don't listen close enough, they just let the beats cluster and verses string together, never really paying attention about what the artist has to say for himself or his sub-culture. As Sole says on the first d*mn track on the album, (and, it's even in the frickin audio sample above) "I've got a thousand ways to say nothing". Quite true, but they're pretty clever, and the production IS thumping, something I wouldn't mind hearing Eminem himself rap over. So, disregard these holier-than-the-holiest-of-thous reviews, and listen to what a REAL hip-hop head has to say. I like all types of music, not just rap, but hip-hop is the culture I grew up with, sampling is what got me involved in all other kinds of music, and I'm here to say that any true afficionado of experimental music would be pleasantly surprised if they truly opened their ears to what Sole (and his more talented lable-mates, like Alias and Sage Francis) are doing these days.
