Director Antoine Fuqua's action comedy stars Jamie Foxx as a lowly thief busted for a fish story--selling shrimp as scampi--who hooks up with another thief (Robert Pastorelli), who got away with a bit more: $42 million worth of gold bars, to be exact. The songs accompanying this tale are fast and furious. Foxx's own "Bed Springs" won't have him leaving his day job anytime soon. But the unpredictable combustion of Beanie Sigel with Ram Squad; former Geto Boy Scarface (featuring Dangerous); Cuban Link and Fat Joe; and current superstar Nelly (featuring the St. Lunatics) form a serious hard-core attack. Even when the beats slow, the anger rides hard. Softening things a bit in relief is R&B popster Mya, perhaps best known for inspiring a Tommy Hilfiger lipstick shade, with the Jimmy Jam- and Terry Lewis-produced, seductive come-on "Free." Rock-A-Billy Review.......2007-02-07

The song selections on this cd are not as strong as the "Ain't I'm a Dog" disc, but still well worth the money. If nothing else Johnny Horton's Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor and the Coop cover art are worth the price of the cd. Rock-A-Billy fans will enjoy most all of the tracks.

I was a little disappointed in this one. The second is way better by far. Not that all the songs suck there is a handful of good ones The Collin Kids "Whistle Bait" and "Bo Bo Skadaddle" other than that I wouldn't recommend this to somebody who is wanting to hear the Rockabilly sound (Try "Ain't I'm a Dog" for that).

I GOT THE ABOVE TITLE FROM ANOTHER VENDER AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO SEND THIS ONE AND THIS IS ABSOLUTLY THE BEST ROCKABILLY ON RECORD/CD. COLUMBIA RECORDS WAS NOT KNOWN FOR THEIR ROCK AND ROLL IN THE 50'S AND IF THIS IS NOT ROCK AND ROLL I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. GET THIS CD AND THE COMPANION "AIN'T I'M A DOG". YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FIVE STAR RATING INSTEAD OF ONE--IT WAS ENTERED BY MISTAKE.

I thought this CD would just be a good way to get introduced to some of the not-so-famous-as-Carl-Perkins rockabilly singers of the '50s. (To correct the last reviewer, all of the tracks on the CD were recorded in the '50s per the liner notes.) And a great introduction it is, but the sound quality is excellent, despite apparently being mono recordings, and thus the CD is fun to listen to as well as being good rockabilly schooling. "Ain't I'm a Dog," the companion CD, is just as good.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

great live band.......2006-01-09

I just saw the Gear Daddies on Dec 27th 2005 at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis. It was the best concert I've ever seen. Sometimes it's dissappointing to see a band live...because they let you down. I never heard the Gear Daddies until about 6 months ago...they are now my favorite band and the live concert just validated that...It's just good music period...

One of the best Minnesota bands.......2004-01-24

I was listening to the radio the other day (on a rare occasion) and heard one of my personal favorite songs from my high school days, not to mention from one of the few local bands I was into..."Stupid Boy" by Gear Daddies. I am not really into the local music scene here in Minneapolis but the few I did like (The Replacements, Husker Du/Sugar, Babes in Toyland, Zu Zu's Petals) actually broke out into mainstream music with major record labels. One of them were Gear Daddies. So after hearing "Stupid Boy" on the radio, I busted out my copy of "Billy's Live Bait" (a collection of Gear Daddies' songs). I almost forgot how much I loved this band. I guess if you were to label the Gear Daddies' music, they would be right up there on the alt-country scene with Wilco and Lucinda Williams. The music is ridiculously catchy and so bloody hummable. Martin Zellar is one of the best songwriters to come out of the frozen tundra I call Minnesota. A lot of the songs on the cd is filled with lament and regret. Martin's raw vocals also lends to each song a wave of emotion that the listener can hear. Why the Gear Daddies didn't achieve the same notoriety as Wilco is beyond me. Their music was very radio-friendly and hook-driven. How can you not love songs like "Stupid Boy" and "Color of Her Eyes" (my two personal favorite Gear Daddies songs)? "Billy's Live Bait" is a testament to Gear Daddies' legacy. Martin Zellar still performs around the Twin Cities on the weekends despite having moved to Texas a few years ago and releasing the same infectious music with his band The Hardways.

As if all the out pouring of bad music over the years would some how make me forget about all the good Stuff, "Time Heals" lyrics come to me out of nowhere and im happy they did...
This CD is Straight with substance even though it may sound lighthearted, and that's the Beauty of it....

A Lifetime Ago............2001-04-15

It seems like only yesterday I was trying to get into Kirby's in Moorhead, MN, to listen to the Gear Daddies. I was 19 years old, a college student who thought beer and girls were the end-all and be-all. Who knew there was a soundtrack to that life? The honest feeling that comes out of every track never fails to stir up a little something inside me from that time. If a song or songs can do that to me, it's a beautiful thing.

Oh, my, I'm scooting down the highway today blasting this CD, and I know it's not recent, and the band has broken up long ago, and these boys are all men by now. I'm not a kid anymore either. But I tell ya, ladies out there, this is genuine Boy Rock, all the raunchy, intense passion you only get from guys that age. Makes me want to be 20 years younger and jumping up on that stage (or into their torn jeans). Oh, they indulged in "the beat and evil things days that come to young guys in their middle twenties" (Kerouac), so we get a little self-pity, a little self-destructiveness. But I miss the rawness of those days. Martin Zeller sang like he meant it, and the rest of the band plays their guts out. Which is more than I can say for the boys that make music today. Sigh. I think it's funny this has no reviews. I don't even really like country but this cd is the exception. I guess this isn't mainstream Country but this is by far the best country cd I have ever heard. Bear, Bait, and Ammo says it all. Just listen to it.

Baiter get this one!!!.......2003-10-01

I was introduced to the Worms live in concert at FolkFest, and HAD to buy a couple of the CD's to take home - EVERYONE I have exposed to the Worms is in love with this band! Everyone sings along by the second chorus, even if they've never heard the songs before. If you don't know the Worms yet you are missing a HUGE treat, so get yourself introduced already. Like the Bare Naked Ladies in posture and vibe, but not at all musically the Worms are here to entertain you - Just put on the disc and a smile invariably follows.

These guys must really love Canada. It has to be nearly impossible to lampoon their homeland and to lovingly puncture its icons and traditions so thoroughly without a true sense of devotion and good-natured fondness for the place. This album, filled to the gills with sly wit and unsubtle buffoonery, is a slanted homage to the Great White North.

Yes, Americans believe a host of stereotypes about their northern neighbors, and the Worms exploit them so gleefully they get laughs from Yanks and Canucks alike.

Their "proud to be Canadian" songs put that brewery marketing bumpf to shame. Well worth the money. If you love the strange stuff that shows up on CBC Radio then these guys are for you.

Awesome group!.......2002-10-19

I heard of this group through an online friend, and after seeing some of their music at mp3.com was eager to buy their CDs from amazon. I am not sorry that I bought Live Bait; although a few of my favorite songs were not on there (ie Killer Robots from Venus), it was a really enjoyable experience and absolutely hilarious. Arrogant Worms is very talented and I hope to eventually get their other CDs.
Favorite songs in this CD: The Last Sch (sp) Pirate, Carrot Juice is Murder, TV Weather Guy, Malcolm, and Canada's Really Big.

Take the Bait.......2002-09-22

I love this album. If you have not seen these Guys in concert,it is every bit as fun as this cd sounds. I have to say if they put every song I like on this album, then they would need to play every song they have. It is a good example of all there albums, and the songs they did notchoose are on par with these ones. A great introduction to the Arrogant Worms.

If they didn't exist we'd be poorer for it..........2002-07-26

Friends put me onto this group a couple years ago.. If you ever liked Firesign Theatre then these folks will give you a warm 'bozo' glow.. "TEENAGE IMMIGRANT WELFARE MOTHERS ON DRUGS", followed by a pseudo-seachanty "GINGRICH THE NEWT" will wind your alarm clock and make you say 'hey!!! there is something going on here!!!'.

There are eight songs on this EP and atleast four of them are really good. Those four being the first half. The second half isn't bad, but the songs seem kind of worthless compared to the first half. The first song, "Hammering so hard", is the EP's best track. It sounds like The Replacements meets Nirvana briefly introduced to Minor Threat. That pretty much goes for the entire EP. The vocalist, Peter Searcy, sounds like Kurt Cobain, Paul Westerberg, and Rick Froberg mixed into one. There is also a little Husker Du influence in some of the songwriting. I'm sure many of you looking at these reviews are fans of Slint, but I warn you not to expect anything like Slint from this band here. The guitar work shows a tiny little bit of the Slint sound, but it's not obvious. Remember Brian McMahan (Slint's vocalist/second guitarist) is only on guitar, not on vocals (and thankfully, because Searcy is a much better vocalist for this band). Also, Britt Wilford (Slint's drummer) is on drums. I may as well take time to note that the other members of Squirrel Bait, bassist Ethan Buckler and second guitarist David Grubbs, do a fine job on this recording.

In conclusion, I haven't got the Squirrel Bait full-length (Skag Heaven) yet, but this EP is just begging me to. A really good listen, and yes the Nirvana/Husker Du comparisons are completely true.

I may as well take time to note that the other members of Squirrel Bait, Ben Daughtrey on drums, bassist Ethan Buckler and second guitarist David Grubbs, do a fine job on this recording.

In conclusion, I haven't got the Squirrel Bait full-length (Skag Heaven) yet, but this EP is just begging me to. A really good listen, and yes the Nirvana/Husker Du comparisons are completely true.

The Squirrel Bait record truly was a revelation for the small group of kids who discovered it in '85. It predates Nirvana's first full-length by about 3 or 4 years--and a lot of the original Squirrel Bait fans, myself included, are still bitter that Nirvana grabbed all the glory.

Similarities between the bands notwithstanding, Squirrel Bait were a lot more intelligent, were mere kids when their record came out, and frankly, make Nirvana sound like corporate hair metal. The first time I heard "Hammering so Hard" I couldn't believe my ears it was so good. It was hardcore gone rock, with hooks galore and zero loss of intensity.

Peter Searcy's voice just has to be heard--he outdoes Cobain. As for the drumming, sorry Dave Grohl, the kid behind the kit was phenomenal!! We used to air-drum to it over doobies in the rec room.

An absolute monstrosity. Easily, THE most powerful 20 some-
odd minutes of music ever recorded. A complete, cacophonous
roar led by twin-barrels burnin' buzzsaw guitars and a drummer
named Ben who sounded like Keith Moon AFTER he destroyed the
skins. And Peter Searcy screaming/mewling/howling/caterwauling
over this riotous din like Paul Westerberg after a few
"whatever you're havings". As good, if not better, than
anything those Husker Dudes were doing at that present time.
As frontman Searcy anguishly laments on the final song "You
won't see-you won't know-that everything was PERFECT"...
believe me Peter...it all was.

Among the most storied achievements of the "12th-Century Renaissance" are, of course, the poetry and songs of the troubadours and their northern French counterparts, the trouvères. Less well-known is the fact that there were at least 20 trobairitz (female troubadors) and two female trouvères. Sinfonye explores their works--along with the chanson de toile and chanson de femme, two distinct forms--written from a woman's viewpoint--on The Sweet Look and the Loving Manner. Unfortunately, only one song, A chantar m'er by the Comtessa de Dia, survives with a melody; Sinfonye solves this problem by using a standard medieval procedure--contrafactum, i.e., fitting existing melodies (in this case, by male troubadours) with new texts (by trobairitz). Vivien Ellis brings a plain, folkish voice to these songs--she doesn't achieve all the subtlety one might want, but her singing has an appealing directness and simplicity. The instrumental preludes occasionally seem disconnected from the songs they introduce, but the playing is otherwise lively and sensitive. --Matthew Westphal
