Awfully Deep

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
If you've read any of the speculation surrounding Awfully Deep, you'll be aware that this is the down album from beleaguered Brit-Jamaican rapper Roots Manuva, a troubled work where he battles with the twin demons of depression and mental illness. Luckily, hard times can't entirely keep a good man like Rodney Smith down: barely two minutes into the bashed-up dub-hop of "Mind 2 Motion," he's already exhorting his audience to "Swing your pants!/ Swing your skirt!/ Shake away the hurt!" in an effort to keep the black dog from his door.

And truly, this is a long dark night of the soul: on the excellent "Colossal Insight," Smith turns to God to save his sanity; on pitch-black soul number "The Falling," he's lost in an apocalyptic reverie, fantasizing about smuggling hand-grenades onto an airplane. But luckily, Smith is agreeably incapable of presenting his predicament without moments of dark levity: see the title track, which recalls a stint at a mental hospital populated by "crooked doctors and kinky nurses." A man who dispatches the Reaper with a nudge and a wink, Roots Manuva remains one of British hip-hop's most potent forces. --Louis Pattison

This is the only Music I have heard by this fine gentleman other than that which appears on the Gorillaz Demon Days. It is brilliantly produced with mostly catchy beats which fluctuate from contemporary dancehall reaggae style to massive attack sounding brit-hop. The smart lyrics reflect a political and social awareness that is often lacking in much of today's music. Some songs are more for the lyricists, so pay close attention to his words. All in all, this bouncy album will make your booty appreciate your ears.

5 out of 5 stars Shockingly Brilliant.......2006-03-05

Just flat out an amazing lyrical and sonic offering. The beats are the most varied and ingenious beats you can imagine, that don't compromise on quality or catchiness. In fact, it has the most consistency in beats out of all his albums. The lyrics are one (very) slight step up from what we're used to. He seems to be "evening out", less standout moments, more solid, standup material. His lyrics mystify again and again, the fluency of sound and meaning is a true gift. Easily well worth the money for anyone who cares for lyrical or sonic art. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2005-10-10

This is a welcome break from the usual Fiddy-cloned output that makes up the current US HipHop-scene. You've got it all here - thought-provoking lyrics, dubby beats and all round goodness. Manuva mixes up various styles - from dancehall and dub to 2-step and grime. Whilst lacking the instant monster such as 'Witness', this album is much more consistant than his previous work.... this is all killer, no filler! The choice is: there ain't no choice but to pursue it!!!

5 out of 5 stars have you ever been, a haunting of this kind.......2005-10-03

roots manuva is back again with an all new instalment of brit's best dub hop beats. this album is bangin with some of the most liscious beats around. electronic sounds with mixtures of dub/reggae & hip hop flava. the album's lyrics are a bit on the darker side, mentioning good & bad times, right's & wrong's "some times i hate my self, some times i love my self" to cold. but they are all in a way to uplift or to give insight not to further the spiral. if your not at all familiar with roots he creats all his beats & production, his beats are not typical hip hop but hybrids of adding electric moog/analog to reggae/dub inspired riddums. not even comparable to gorillaz, or aesop rock. but if you enjoy those groups this wont be a stretch. the other reviewer is correct in his statment that when you come to the end of this record you will definettely want to re listen imediatelly. everysong is fantastic & no skipable tracks. he only has 1 other mc on the whole album, so you know if its good that he is the mack, enjoy i know you will.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Ital Hip-Hop.......2005-09-21

An English friend turned me on to Roots Manuva--how did I sleep on this sick MC? I'm from Washington DC so I was skeptical. English hip-hop?! This guy is the [...]. Since I'm the first reviewer I'll break it down for you:

4. Colossal Insight: 8/10 Self-conscious phat joint
5. Too Cold: 11/10 INSTANT classic--well worth the price of the album! Life is hard but it's just too bad man.
6. A Haunting: 8/10 This whole CD is haunted
7. Rebel Heart: 10/10 the real fast paced hip-hop
8. Chin High: 10/10 Keep your chin up
9. Babylon Medicine: 8/10 Long live the ugly
10. Pause for Cause: 8/10 Another break, no stupid skits here
11. Move Ya Loin: 9/10 It's grown on me

3 out of 5 stars Worthy Companion Piece.......2006-06-26

Minus the superfluous album version edit of "Awfully Deep," you've got one new song, one live-studio reworking of the near title track with a little help from Gorillaz collaborator Damon Albarn, and a remix of each. The Albarn/Lampeth Blues version benefits greatly from the Blur kingpin's addition of a brooding piano as well as Rodney's more contemplative delivery. Joseph Mount's Metronomy remix of Damon's jam takes the cut back to an early eighties cheese-funk which kinda misses the point but Diplo's remix of the previously unreleased "Seat Yourself" recovers to a more appropriate sludgy bangin' vibe. All in all, it's a worthwhile companion to the full length of the not quite same name.

5 out of 5 stars roots tearin up on a new ep.......2006-02-11

roots does it again. at first i was dissapointed that daman albarn of gorillaz & blur wasnt on a single track on awfully deep because roots was on the album demon days "all alone", but their wasnt really much guests but still its 1 of the best from 2005.
well this ep features daman albarn on piano featuring a whole new version with new lyrics for the lambeth blues & lambeth blues metronomy remix. the song is amazing & rivals the original, also a must have is seat yourself which should have been on the album but so should all these songs so just have to have both i guess, theirs also an amazing remix of the song. for a live version of those songs go to roots manuva.com theirs you can download the live forun show, absolutelly amazing, with a version of manuvadelic hendrix song.
