Onetime hip-hop representatives for the black boho intelligentsia, Brand Nubian--made up of the core quartet of Grand Puba, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, and DJ Alamo--disbanded in 1990 before reuniting in 1998 for this album. While all the artists have successfully survived apart, their chemistry together still works wonders. With its odd mix of black-power politics, feel-good party songs, and straight lyrical bravado, Foundation surprisingly emerges as one of 1998's better rap albums. Brand Nubian invigorate everything from dance tracks ("Back Up off the Wall") to underground gems ("The Return"). They even manage to update James Brown's anthem "I'm Black and I'm Proud" while sounding less dated than you'd expect. --Oliver Wang

Album Description
A musical partnership between Disney and the Make-A-Wish Foundation launched with the first official wish, which included a trip to Disneyland for 7-year-old Bobsy. This year we will celebrate the 50,000th Disney theme park visit for a Make-A-Wish child. In celebration of this landmark wish, Disney and Make-A-Wish have joined forces to create a compilation record themed around music of hope, friendship and dreams coming true. Each song is a timeless classic, which will instantly evoke the message of love and hope. Wishes! showcases leading artists, from Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Tony Bennett and many more, singing specially-selected Disney songs about the power of making wishes come true. Great artists, great songs and a great cause, brought together on one CD.

Music.......2007-04-12
This is a wonderful Cd of music with talented singers. It is going to a wonderful organization for children fighting disease. A "must get" for any music lover of childrens movie titled songs.
well done.......2007-01-10
This is one of the better Disney albums....The Tony Bennett "Bare Necessities" and the Streisand "Someday My Prince Will Come" make it worth it, but the Kenny Loggins "Your Heart Will Lead You Home" is wonderful too.
SUPER!!!.......2006-07-06
Wishes was not only what I was looking for but even better, Great for a disney song collectot.
The Rescuers remains neglected!.......2006-01-20
One of the most fit songs to appear in this CD comes from Disney's 1977 feature, The Rescuers, and that was Someone's Waiting for You, which's original recording was beautifully performed by Shelby Flint, but why isn't in here? Once again, I wonder why the film's been neglected from appearing in any music CD ever.
I didn't like the new renditions.......2005-12-20
Others may prefer that this isn't just a 'greatest hits' album from Disney and has new folks singing the old songs, but to my ear they just didn't have the charm of the originals and not what I want to listen to.

If the people at Nimbus are smart, they'll do a whole collection of discs on this theme. The literary-musical connection is, when done tastefully, as it is here, irresistible. As the intelligent and interesting notes maintain, "London at the time of Jane Austen was one of the most exciting centers in all of Europe for music," and this was an era of great fertility of composers in general. Lucky Jane! Imagine publishing your second novel the same year that Beethoven's Seventh Symphony receives its premiere. Or offering your fourth novel to the public near the time of the first performance of Schubert's Fifth Symphony. The program highlights popular music from Austen's time by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Fasch, J.C. Bach, Boyce, Schubert and others. I find the exclusion of chamber music a little odd here, though, since chamber music was the rage among the sort of gentlemen and women of the country about whom Austen wrote so well. --Gwendolyn Freed

Album Description
"Few have the touch of Bob Florence." -- JazzTimes
"Bob Florence is a pianist of unequalled harmonic virtuosity, as well as a composer and arranger of both sensitivity and power. Florence brings a mystical romanticism on the one hand and a driving potency on the other ... he assembles the finest musicians in the world and they respond brilliantly as a unit and individually." -- Jazz Review
"No other big band arranger and composer does it quite like Bob Florence does. Pyramid entrances by section and by individual, suite-like compositions that pierce the air with vivid memories, dramatic context that puts the listener on the edge of his seat, humorous asides and funny titles: these are the elements that intrigue both the performing artist and the satisfied audience." -- John Gilbert
"Swinging and original-sounding music and arrangements from a multitalented musician who has been a composer, arranger, bandleader, keyboardist, accompanist, and jazz educator ... the musicians in this band are obviously here because they love it and the results do sound like it." -- Audiophile Audition
The first new recording on MAMA in years! Bob Florence is a Grammy Award winner and has received an incredible fifteen Grammy nominations in addition to two Emmy Awards. "Eternal Licks & Grooves," commissioned by ASCAP and IAJE to honor Count Basie, premiered in January 2005 at the IAJE convention in Long Beach. "Appearing in Cleveland," commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute to honor Stan Kenton, premiered in March 2004 at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles.

More of Bob Florence's Creative Spirit.......2007-04-09
The announced release date of a new Bob Florence Limited Edition CD always brings a heightened degree of anticipation within the big band jazz community. This is because Bob Florence is arguably the pre-eminent composer/arranger in big band jazz today (and certainly among the top three). Furthermore, the Limited Edition band ranks just as highly within the echelon of large jazz ensembles. But "Eternal Licks and Grooves" (recorded in 2006 or perhaps 2005 - the Cd booklet is not clear), raised even more anticipation among big band afficionados than usual. This was probably due to the fact that the CD would contain two of Bob's most recent major compositions which had been heard in concert over the past few years. Well, now that the CD is here, it is a joy to report that it meets and even exceeds all expectations.
What must be commented on first are these major compositions, both 14 minutes in length. The title track which opens the CD is Bob's tribute to Count Basie, while "Appearing in Cleveland" which closes the CD, is Bob's tribute to Stan Kenton. These compositions are most interesting in that each draws on major themes from these bandleaders' respective repertoires, yet in the end come across as pure Bob Florence, hard-driving, cutting edge (but within limits), creative jazz which both surprises and satisfies the listener.
But in truth Bob's creative spirit shines throughout the CD, on two more Florence originals, "Mirror Image" and Guiding Star", as well as three standards, "Clair De Lune", "Invitation" and "I'm Old Fashioned". Bob's ability to start a chart slowly and build it to a dramatic climax while keeping the listener fully engaged on the road is unparalleled. "Invitation" is a prime example, opening with Bob's reflective piano solo, building through a series of theme statements and swinging solos to a roaring shout chorus. Something similar takes place on "Clair De Lune", and on the more gentle "Mirror Image."
Florence's Limited Edition is gifted with the best musicians possible, and they dig into the music with great spirit and drive, and also much deep feeling when needed. For the latter, check out Bob Carr on baritone sax and Bob McChesney on trombone on "Guiding Star", and Alex Isles on trombone on "Old Fashioned" which is one the most beautiful theme statements this listener has ever heard. The band's ensemble playing is impeccable with top drawer soloists such as trumpeters Larry Lunnetta, Ron Stout, Carl Saunders and Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Scott Whitfield, saxophonists Kim Richmond, Don Shelton, Jeff Driskoll, Tom Peterson and Bob Efford adding personal and powerful statements. Perhaps the star of the CD apart from the leader is guitarist Larry Koonse whose comping and solos add a slightly different but most effective color to the music. Be not afraid, Koonse is no rock `n roll guitar distorter! The rhythm section of Peter Erskine on drums and Trey Henry on bass drive these often complex charts with flair and driving swing.
"Eternal Licks" and Grooves" is a masterpiece 70 minute CD, perhaps slightly more accessible on initial listening than a couple of Bob's recent Limited Edition recordings. The recording quality is very clear and well balanced, though a little distant, so that one will have to turn up the volume to get the full dynamic impact of the music (especially the shout choruses). "Eternal Licks and Grooves" is highly recommended to listeners of modern big band jazz and will certainly be among the top three or four big band releases of 2007. For many listeners it will be at the top of the list.

Album Description
Limited edition two CD pressing of this 2007 compilation from Asian Dub Foundation features a bonus disc that features an additional 15 tracks including remixes, rarities and more. 32 tracks total including 'Rebel Warrior', 'Black White' and 'Change'. 12 years, five studio albums, two live albums, many EP's, several world tours, major festival appearances and an Opera. Even after all this, Asian Dub Foundation are still one of the most incendiary, relevant, outspoken, truthful, honest bands in the world today. In an era when there seems to be little or no political or emotional engagement between bands and the world around them (other than the self-absorbed whining of Emo or the gangsta culture of Hip-Hop) what a refreshing thing it is to have a band that believe in the power of music to change the world. From their earliest days they fought for people's rights - culminating in the night when a free Satpal Ram was able to join them onstage in London; on Tank, their last album, they foretold the disaster awaiting the US and UK in Iraq following the overthrow of Sadam; throughout their careers they have had something to say - and they have said it by shouting loud and hard! Fusing the Punk DIY ethic with Funk, Hip-Hop, Asian music and LOUD guitars, ADF have long been a live staple at colleges, clubs and bigger venues all around the UK and beyond and this summer will see them appearing at several festivals in between bouts in the studio recording their next album with producer Adrian Sherwood. Moved from cassete to CD.......2007-02-19
After 10 years of babying the cassete of this album decided to look for a CD form. Glad to have found it! Disney needs to put out this album again. A real change from the nasty kids music out today. THE BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER!
Best of the best.......2006-06-21
I got this tape for my daughter 15 years ago, and still remember her imitating Little Richard from her carseat! I am also an elementary classroom and music teacher, and found this to be the most enjoyable children's tape we owned. We never got tired of it; in fact, since ours disappeared, I'm ordering a new one as well as one for my newest nephew. I encourage any parent to get one of these while they're still around!
Oldie but Goodie.......2004-10-16
I had this tape when my oldest daughter was born in '91. I wish it were still in print, so to speak. It was great having kids songs sung by contemporary artists who created fun recordings that didn't grate on your nerves after hours of listening to kids' songs. I now have a new baby & can't find my tape so want a new copy to keep us both entertained.

It's not often that nearly four-decade-old music manages to be both seminal and cutting edge, but these 32 hits from Jamaica's--and the world's--greatest ska outfit are just that. Early ska blended R&B shuffle with mento (Jamaican calypso)--Jamaica's antic response to stateside boogie-woogie. Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, the late Tommy McCook, and the other Skatalites injected the swinging sophistication of jazz-honed chops, and this set captures the band just starting out, during their '64-'65 tenure at Coxsonne Dodd's legendary Studio One. Ska's buoyant appeal has never died, merely gone underground now and then, and it's raging at an all-time high today. Foundation Ska shows why the Skatalites still dominate. Every track's a burnished gem, and fans will get extra kicks from the band's backing turns for Bob Marley and the Wailers ("Simmer Down") and Stranger Cole and Ken Boothe's "World's Fair" duet. --Elena Oumano
Customer Reviews:
Foundation is right!.......2007-07-06
The title fits. This was the birth of reggae with Jamaica's Jazz and R&B supergroup the Skatalites in the 1960s. Hear them back up Bob Marley dn the Wailer's first record "Smmer Down" and you will do just the opposite. Enjoy "Exodis," Cool Smoke," and their lovely rendition of "I Should Have Known Better" (aka Independent Anniversary Ska).
But the real bonus here is the late great genius Don Drummond's wailing trombone in "Eastern Standard Time." Why more people in the uSA aren't familiar with this is a mystery. But in either case, this is one of those happy Cds that is recommended listening after a hard day.
Skatalitesmyfire.......2007-01-10
This is an excellent collection of songs. Can't really find a single poor track on either CD. These guys somehow combine a mastery of their craft with the primeval feeling of true ska. If I was to subdivide the many flavors of ska even further, I'd say this was "Big Band Ska" - a category the Skatalites own. While I'm generally not too keen on instrumentals, this album is way too good to pass up - and with 32 songs is also a bargain. Can't imagine a lover of ANY type of ska not enjoying this... 4.5 stars.
Ska-tastic..........2006-09-01
I caught a whiff of this great music late at night on the left side of the dial where the public sponsored stations all hang out in a small, little huddle trying to remain fiercely independent. Most of these stations play incredible music of all types and this was one of the records the midnight DJ spun....
Oh, man...this is great stuff. I've always liked ska music, mostly English Beat and General Public, but that music almost sounds contrived compared to the "real thing"...
This music has a jumpy, happy beat...I mean, if you can make the song "Exodus" into something you want to dance to, you're onto something.
I have very eclectic tastes ranging from the conventional to the obscure. To me, music has the obligation to move the soul. If the soul is happy then the feet will be happy and if the feet are happy the hips will be happy until pretty soon your happy soul will unite with your happy body and you have what we call dancing and as Nietzche said in one of his essays, "I can only believe in a God that dances..."
Well, God does dance, friends, so let the spirit/the soul within you come out to play and buy this fantastic collection. It's a little pricey for something that's over 40 years old, but it still beats a lot of the stuff that's currently "out there".
Right.......2006-01-23
I agree with Skibz here. The Bosstones, RBF, LTJ, FIF (ok, enough acronyms), et al. are not traditional ska - they are their own thing. There's connections and influences, but stepping up onto your pedestal and proclaiming that the heathens listening to these lowly recent bands should listen to 'real' ska does not make any sense. If someone likes ska-punk, they might absolutely hate traditional ska, and your admonitions will do nothing to change that. They'll just be given one more reason not to at least try to like it. If someone disdainfully reproached you for your musical interests, would that really inspire you to look into that person's musical interests?
Of course, the reviewer comparing them to the Bosstones was most likely just trying to stir up crap, and has succeeded. There's more than a few people doing that on here. Don't take every review as if the person was perfectly serious: I think there is great humor in such facetious posts, as long as you are able to see it for what it is.
Now for another realization. Some of the first few bands I got into were Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. The Bosstones were, and still are, one of my favorite bands. They are exceptional at what they do. I *also* like more traditional ska, but I've had enough with the naming of names, and trying to one-up everyone by being more 'pure' in their selection. I don't feel it's any more 'real' - it's a totally different style, for a totally different mood.
Anyway. The Skatalites are great. Goodnight.

More entertaining than Mike Young's (Chicago IL.) reviews........2005-09-23
If your looking for the Skatalites then you know what to expect...buy this! If you've stumbled accross this album because your interested in the roots of various musical gendres then you have found this one for a reason...buy it! I also HIGHLY recomend checking out Mike Youngs other reviews, very entertaining.
Of particular note are Mr. Youngs reviews of -
The movie Showtime, quote: "DeNiro's best movie"
The Fleet Adult Enema Twin Pack, quote: "The two pack is an idea whose time has come."
The movie Air Bud, quote: "Disturbingly relevant in today's post 9/11 climate" (He's down with Air Bud 1 and 3 but not 2)
The Skatalites Ball of Fire album, quote: "Ska, which was primarily invented by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Operation Ivy has gotten so big that they're now going back and calling earlier bands, like the Skatalites, "Ska" as well." (read the whole review and try not to make a HUH?!?!?! face)
I urge you to take time out to peruse all of Mr. Youngs reviews, nuggets of wisdom in each and every one of them.

Customer Reviews:
The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

The 1996 follow-up CD to For Our Children packs less romp and more hush. Although the stellar lineup includes Celine Dion, Seal, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Cher, Luther Vandross, and others, For Our Children, Too is really a lullaby album and its predecessor is a party record. There are more ballads, more R&B singers, and more arrangements mired in overproduction. That said, if you want a gentler collection of songs, this might be your first choice. Seal turns in a poignant rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon," while Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" shows how universal that old Joni Mitchell classic really is. James Taylor and Carly Simon's memorable hit "Mockingbird" is also featured, along with Cher doing a predictable interpretation of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from Cinderella. Celine gives "Brahm's Lullaby" her trademark Dion treatment and Luther Vandross turns the protest anthem "If I Had a Hammer" into a moving meditation on peace and equality. Did someone say this music might be too sophisticated for kids? Still, it's for a great cause. --Martin Keller

Must have CD.......2005-10-21
I bought this cd for a friend many years ago. I am now having a baby of my own. This cd was a must have for my own child!!
Perfect CD for all my children........2004-12-11
I bought this CD 8 years ago when my daughter was born. She listened to it each night up until her brother was born in 2002. Now we're expecting to pass it on to their new sibling in Aug of 2005. Amazing how one CD can put 3 different children to sleep so peacefully!
For Our Children is much better.......2004-09-23
I was so disappointed with this CD I am writing my very first review for Amazon. The first CD in this "collection" is so fun and very charming. This one lacks on many levels.
A must have.......2004-01-30
We received this CD as a gift when our first child was born. I have bought it for all our friends who have babies since then. It contains the most beautiful renditions of many songs from our own childhood. Everyone who has received it, loves it!!! In addition, the few songs we were unfamiliar with turned out to be some of our favorites!
kids music adults can listen to.......2003-11-23
This CD, along with the original For Our Children, contains artists you know, singing songs you remember from your childhood. We had to replace our first version of this CD, because the kids played it so often that they scratched it beyond any use at all. My 5 year old son knows all the words to If I had a Hammer, and You are my Sunshine, and his favorite of all time is Puff the Magic Dragon- this version is the best I've ever heard. My personal favorite is the Elton John song about a boy who first meets his newborn brother. Stop now and go get this CD- you won't be sorry!!

Deep Gap, North Carolina's Doc Watson is considered one of country music's most influential guitar players. Watson's blend of Appalachian folk, blues, country, gospel, and bluegrass first gained steam nationally during a 1963 Newport Folk Festival appearance, and this anthology of instrumentals begins with "Black Mountain Rag" from his self-titled debut record from the following year. Foundation borrows 16 tracks from 11 albums--nearly 35 years worth of material--from his earliest recordings for Vanguard through the '70s and '80s duets with his late son Merle (who accompanies on banjo and guitar). Doc's voice serves only as an introduction to several of the collection's live numbers, letting his strings do the talking where it counts: on cap-tipping covers of songs by John D. Loudermilk, Maybelle Carter, and Molly O'Day, and on the nearly half-dozen rags that best display Doc's trademark flat-picking frenzy. --Scott Holter--
Customer Reviews:
Six string heaven.......2002-12-05
A flatpicking fan's delight. Ya can't beat Doc Watson when he gets those strings a-ringing, although I have to confess being more partial to his vocal numbers, myself. Sixteen sterling examples of Watson's flawless guitar playing, gathered from various old Vanguard albums.
Great stuff, but not enough of it.......2001-12-13
Clocking in at a spare 31:36, this CD collects sixteen instrumental cuts from a small selection of Doc's output during these 25 years. This collection is a good starting point for newcomers to Doc's fine guitar (and banjo) playing, but for the avid fan it provides only highlights of his career and little more. We get a taste of flat picking, and a taste of finger picking, with a little banjo playing thrown in on the side. Still, it's hard to complain about an artist who is truly a national treasure, and whose picking is unsurpassed. It's just so good one wishes that they had included much, much more.
the Quintessential Doc.......2001-10-02
I first heard Doc when I was A boy. Being that my mother is from Kentucky, I was blessedly afforded the gift of bluegrass. Being A Yankee from Michigan, this type of music was lost on my friends but Lawdy, not on me. My first experience with Docs music was through the hands of my uncle Nathen who would play everything you could imagine and then some. But,... But when he got to Doc, time stood still. I tell you these things as when I listened to this collection, time stood still with meaning for me. "Docs guitar" still leaves me speachless, and "Windy and Warm" is a lovely coalition of two generations (God rest Merle) coming together, one at his fathers feet, to gift the world with the glory of artisans. I have been a guitarist for 27 years and yet still I stand in rapt awe of his magesty on the guitar.
( THE MAN ).......2000-10-20
THE MAN
Doc has always been THE MAN to a lot of picker's,even the top picker's today, like Tony Rice,Norman Blake,& so on,it might seem like straight picking, but try and do some of his song and you'll find out different. When I frist started playing I started out with the guitar, listing to the Stanely Brother's, then I heard Doc play, and was in awh, I did'nt no you could pick a guitar that fast and smooth. And then I heard Tony Rice play and he would start out like Doc but then take it a different level, and now today I here young picker's play, start out like Tony Rice, but take it a new level, but it all started with THE MAN (Doc Watons). Its a must bye if you dont have these recordings already in your (Library), bye this one, sit back, and listen to the picking of Doc and the picker's of today and you'll see what I'am talking about, and you will also say yes he is (THE MAN)... thanks
The best of Doc in instrumental form........2000-08-20
Doc Watson is a man who has had enormous influence on the the emergence of the acoustic guitar as a lead instrument in the folk/bluegrass genres. Without a doubt, Doc is the guy who blazed the trail and showed just what the guitar could do. This album is a fitting tribute to Doc and showcases a selection of tunes that span his career.
While all of these cuts have been previously issued, this instrumental album is a first and should not be missed by any serious Doc Watson fan. It is truly magical to hear Doc's playing through the years on this CD. While his own style is remarkably similar throughout, the variety of artists who accompany him that make the tunes quite different and varied. This CD demonstrates just how special a player Doc is.
