5 out of 5 stars Great Album! Moka Only brings it home!.......2006-09-09

I don't know what these other guys are talking about, but this is one of my favorite albums of 2005. Moka's unique vocals and rap style are superb. I've always been a fan of Moka Only from his work with the Greatest hip hop group there is - Swollen Members. This is really the first album of Moka's that I have purchased and I was very pleased after one listen through. The track "Hundred Grand" is one of my favorite tracks of all-time, and the rest of the album is not far behind. Once Again and Sittin on the Porch feat Madchild are also great tracks. Other favorites are More Soup (Ft Mf Doom)and Calling Out (Ft K-Os). Overall this is a great album. I guess it is a change for Moka, but to me it is his best album. The Desired Effect II should be droppin later this year, check it out, and don't forget to pick up the album of the year Swollen Members - Black Magic - September 12, 2006. Best performers out there, pick up the album and go to a show, u won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but not the greatest.......2006-03-10

Being a Moka Only fan for about nearly 2 1/2 years now, I will say that albums such as Lime Green, Road Life, Quick Hits, Martian X-Mas, Mr. Behavior etc. is a lot different from the sound on this album. I know that every Moka project is different from the previous, but it seems like he tried to aim at a different goal on this album. My favorite tracks are More Soup with MF Doom and Keep Moving, which can both be found on Moka Only's Dirty Jazz in which I just imported from Japan. All in all, for a Moka fan its not the greatest in my eyes, but its still a keeper.

3 out of 5 stars not the best moka album out there...........2006-02-23

this album has "studio" sound all over it! moka has taken a step back and didnt do his own beats this time. yeah, moka's lyrics have dummied down from previous ventures--the beats are tight, but not a lot of head-nodding tracks.

ive read interviews about this album and i knew he was trying to reach for a wider appeal and right then i thought LDS! but, not at all...the album really falls short in terms of time. theres not a track on here that hits 4 min and there are only 13; im not used to listening to a moka album and wondering why its so short--or even feeling empty! the majority of his albums have a theme, and theyre never pop--but this one reaches there.

the only track i dislike is ONE TIME, and i will probably skip HUNDRED GRAND...still, this is a decent pickup if ur a true moka fan. people salt on all the singin, but mokes been doin that for awhile now--so it should be no suprise.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing like early 2000 Moka.......2005-12-20

Not for real Die-Hard Moka Only fans. If you loved The Quick Hits, Flood, Nowfolk 2: Moon, Road Life, Flowtorch, Lime Green, or Martian X-Mas, this album will definitely dissapoint. More Soup, a collaboration with MF Doom is the only standout track in my book. I've got to be real about this album. I love you Moka. You're one of my favorite artists, but this album SUCKS. I was extremely disappointed with this album. I understand you're making comprises in your sound to sell some records, but I can't bump this shn!t. Martian X-mas was on point though.

3 out of 5 stars Moka Only - The Desired Effect.......2005-11-01

Canadian Rappers for the most part get very little attention outside their own borders, Moka Only being another example. Moka has released lots of material over the last decade and is a former member of Vancouver's Swollen Members. Moka Only's latest release is "The Desired Effect" (2005). The album opens with the single "Once Again" feat. Mad Child a smooth track where Moka talks to the ladies. One of Canada's best-known MC's K-OS drops in for the smooth collaboration "Calling Out". The bland "Looking At The Ceiling" follows. My favorite track on this one is "Hundred Grand", Moka shines on this one singing his own chorus. Moka laments on "Keep Moving", and then sings again on "Lady Gotta Place". The next couple of tracks fall under skip material for me then Moka does another collaboration with Mad Child providing the laidback "Sitting On The Porch". One of the things that makes Moka stand out is his singing, when he does it well it grabs the listeners attention. Feel like he could improve on his lyrical content, one can only do some many tracks about the ladies before it gets repetitive. Still I prefer this to the "Metamorphis, battleaxe fortress" stuff his former group are delivering. Overall "The Desired Effect" is a decent album, which I recommend checking out.
