Dark Angel [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Co-created by Academy Award-winner James Cameron (Terminator, Titanic) and Emmy Award-winner Charles H. Eglee, "Dark Angel" is a sci-fi adventure series set in the post-apocalyptic U.S. of 2019 and stars Jessica Alba as the genetically engineered Max --"a revved-up girl trying to make a run-down world a better place." The series airs Friday nights (9PM ET/PT) on FOX. The soundtrack features "Trouble Again" from John Forte with Tricky and "My Neck, My Back," one of the fastest breaking Crossover/R&B hits in the country from Dirty South artist Khia. Also included are "Bring It To Me" from Samantha Cole and Public Enemy and MC Lyte doing "Dark Angel Theme." The soundtrack presents the cream of 2002's hip-hop crop in a dazzling array of sounds from both the new and old schools. All the cuts on the album have either been used in the series or will soon appear in upcoming episodes of the show.

This wonderful collection of Laura Nyro's final recordings before her death in 1997 can only strengthen the reputation of one of the true musical enigmas of the last 35 years. Recorded in 1994 and 1995, and split evenly between original compositions and several of her beloved jazz and R&B tunes Nyro sang as a teenager on the street corners of New York, Angel in the Dark perfectly blends the two into a seamless hymn to the heart. Whether swinging through swoony classics like "Walk on By" and "Ooh Baby Baby" or stunning new songs like "Angel in the Dark," "Sweet Dream Fade," and "Animal Grace," Nyro's languid, instantly recognizable voice eerily seems to have barely aged over several decades. Although slightly deeper than on her earlier recordings, her voice--the very epitome of soul--still chills and raptures absolutely unlike any other. It's just Laura and her piano on half of these tracks, while the others get a classy polish from such jazz and R&B notables as Bernard Purdie, Will Lee, John Tropea, and the Brecker Brothers. Laura Nyro always seemed somewhere outside of time and space, and Angel in the Dark is nothing short of a magnificent final kiss blown from the other side. --Carl Hanni

pure talent.......2007-06-03
I recently discovered the wondeous talent of Laura Nyro, and let me tell you I can't get enough of her!! I now have several of her CD's and they are all great. Her music has soul, it has passion, it has emotion. She poured herself into her work, and every song is a treasure.
Angel in the Dark.......2004-12-29
The title is just perfect. Laura was an angel who chose to keep herself hidden from us except for her beautiful voice and truly wonderful songs. I was a fan of hers since she began recording. This is a great album. Alot of her music and music she adored is on this album. This album was released after her death. Her voice has such great color in it. She is in as good a voice here as she was in Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. Alot to be said for giving up smoking! God I really miss her.
Masterpiece.......2004-11-13
I moved to Nashville in 2001 and bought this CD right before I relocated. I flew to Nashville while my things were on a moving truck and this was one of the few CDs I slipped into my bag that I brought with me. When my things were delayed getting here for almost three weeks, this CD was in constant rotation, soothing, calming and reassuring my soul. This CD contains "the best of both worlds" that Laura moved in and out of throughout her career...The Lunar poet who wrote from another galaxy and the crooner who loved to sing the soul songs of her youth. All of the new compositions ("Triple Goddess Twilight", "Gardenia Talk", the title cut and my personal favorite "Serious Playground) are all individually brilliant...Perhaps Laura's best writing...The cover songs are all stirring..."Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "He Was Too Good To Me", "Embraceable You", "La La Means I Love You" and the irresistable "Ooh Baby Baby", each take on new meaning with Laura's unmatchable interpreation. Don't miss out on the masterpiece.
Swan Song from a Gentle Soul.......2004-09-03
I had the pleasure of seeing Laura Nyro live twice, once at Carnegie Hall in the early 1970's (at the peak of her popularity), and again many years later, in the early 90's at the Appel Farm Folk Festival in New Jersey. On both occasions, I was impressed by both her formidable talent and her gentle nature. (At the Carnegie Hall concert, which was an all-star benefit for an Eastern religious leader whose name now escapes me, she spoke between songs about the benefits of Eastern mysticism, when a heckler, who was clearly not in the spirit of the evening, shouted, "[B.S.]!" She stopped, played a few strains on her piano, and paused again for a moment, saying, "You may think it's [B.S.], but I think it's true.") Anyway, anecdotes aside, I always especially loved her early work, which generated hits for everyone but her (Barbra Streisand, The Fifth Dimension, and Three Dog Night, to name a few). This always amazed me, because she was always the best and most soulful interpreter of her own music. I lost touch with her after the early 70's, and she never really recaptured the commercial success of her first four classic albums. But she was always an artist of integrity and grace, and while her voice lost a bit of the range she once had, it never lost that sweet, soulful style that was her trademark. This is a wonderful final love letter to her fans, a satisfying mix of original tunes and covers, and a return to form of sorts, harkening back to those great early songs, as well as "Gonna Take a Miracle", her very fine album of covers with Patti LaBelle and her group. It's an intimate, passionate, reflective, and generally excellent CD. We will miss you, Laura, but thank you for this final, graceful bow. (P.S.: Wait for the "hidden track" at the end, a nice cover of the old Marvelettes hit, "Come and Get These Memories".)
Haunting, evocative: Nyro's 'Muse' takes one last bow.......2004-02-18
In retrospect, the late Laura Nyro's final recording, "Angel in the Dark" is full of haunting summons to mortality: The title track with its pleading, repeated line, "Come back to me, come back; answer my prayer," beckons the spirits of Nyro's mother (who, eerily, succumbed to ovarian cancer at age 49, as her daughter would in 1997); and her maternal grandfather, among others, who Nyro claimed had primary influences on her life (this according to the eloquent liner notes penned by poet Elaine Silver-Lillywhite, Nyro's friend and business partner on their Luna Mist record label).
Likewise, Nyro's self-penned "Triple Goddess Twilight" directly summons these familial spirits, as Nyro sings: "Mother you died young and left me; Your twilight colors/Rose/Ah burgundy/Coral mist/What are the shades of loneliness."
She also addresses her grandfather in the lines: "My grandfather painted houses/On a ladder in the sky/He was working class/Urbane/Street-wise/Said-'We can change the world, girl/Love will inspire,'/Told me this through whiskey/And revolutinary fire."
She summons Heaven with: "He left a war/To walk in peace now/Said life was for/Our dream/Our dream of progress."
The song itself ends by not really resolving itself-in that a piano chord is repeated over and over, sounding like the cadence of footsteps walking into some unknown terrain, gradually fading.
Not all is heavy and haunting, though--the cover songs showcase a youthful joy and obvious reverence for these songs' influence on Nyro as a youth; listen to "Let It Be Me," "Walk On By" and "Embraceable You" to hear examples of her myriad musical influences.
I contend, though, that her most striking recordings on this set remain her self-penned compositions such as those listed previously ("Angel in the Dark," "Triple Goddess Twilight); as well as the mystical "Serious Playground," where Nyro sings, without a hint of irony, "My boss is The Muse" and so describes the songwriting process; "Sweet Dream Fade," an almost 'accidental' groove, given Nyro apparently was not going to record it, but Lillywhite insisted it was ready and Nyro picked it out on the piano, and her band quickly established the charts and set down a groove. It ended up, according to the liner notes, as her last in-studio recording: a sort of off-the-cuff, joyful, jazzy, breezy song and one of the most upbeat songs on the album.
Another Nyro original, "Gardenia Talk," describes spring with relation to new or rediscovered love --it's a song brimming with hope and optimism, seductive and richly visual.
The truly haunting closing song is Nyro's original "Don't Hurt Child" (perhaps written with her teen-age son in mind?). Something like a soulful lullaby, she implores, 'Don't hurt child/I took my stand/But the key is in your hand/Heal your wild wing/And fly." The song, which came to Nyro all in one day, was also among the last songs she recorded.
Other reveiwers have suggested this album is perhaps Nyro's most intimate, a assertion with which I agree. While some critics and reviewers dismissed Nyro's later work is less evocative than her earlier, 'advant-garde' 60s and 70s albums (and it is true that many of her songs in the 80s and 90s stressed topical earth-mother-animal rights-feminist leanings and perhaps only resonated with a handful of fans) "Angel in the Dark" finds Nyro in a seemingly different creative place: Though slightly pushing the edges of darkness and mortality themes with the title track and others, the attendant mystical spirituality that always set Nyro's work apart is firmly in place and flows through this album--it is pure soul. While knowing this was Nyro's last recorded effort might add to this feeling among listeners now, it is plain that the lyrics address spirits come and gone, implore understanding and celebrate happiness, new seasons. It's something like a cycle of life, this album--evoking spirits at the beginning, giving advice to a child on the threshold of life by the end. This album seems at once to be celebrating newfound creativity on the part of Nyro (this again according to the liner notes) while hinting at the sorrow just over the horizon.
This is Nryo in magnificent, final bloom. A must-have for fans, it's best listened to after taking in the fiery music of her youth ("The First Songs," "Eli," "New York Tendaberry,"Christmas and the Beads of Sweat"); her homage album, "Gonna Take A Miracle;" her content, relaxed vocals on "Smile" and "Nested" (as she moved to rural Connecticut and 'settled'); "Mother's Spiritual," "Walk the Dog and Light the Light" (her later albums focusing on the topical natural world-feminist-animal rights-earth mother angles that were important to her). Taken in this career-spanning context, "Angel" seems the perfect end-note: Whether pleading for much-missed spirits to return, or seductively reminding the listener, "It's spring," the emotions of this recording, the warmth with which Nyro sings and accompanies herself or the grooves that seem to leap out at the listener at the songs were the band locks into a jazzy groove, this album seems, more than anything, a testament to the power and affirmation inherent in an artist for whom "The Muse" allows her to exclaim, "I'm here for the music/Of my life."
So are we, and we are all the better for it.

The Beauty of the Male Voice.......2006-05-04
I was fortunate to hear The Male Choir of St. Petersburg perform at the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, and was stunned by the power and beauty of their song. The director, aware that the deep, resonate voices struck a chord within each member of the audience, held the final note of each song until it echoed from the rafters. The songs are usually traditional Russian songs, but are not religious chants, as many people seem to expect - one song, called "O My Field" is an ode to a farmer's plot of ground. I recommend this album, a great opportunity to revel in the beauty of the male voice.

Why the 5-star average? Because It ROCKS!!!!.......2006-09-04
Dark Angel's "Darkness Descends" is one of the 5-star averages on this site that truly deserves the rating. Don Doty is one of thrash's best metal vocalists ever, he sounds like the American version of Mille Petrozza, who is also mindblowing. The two guitarists, Eric Meyer and Jim Durkin, are incredible because they can dish out INSANE solos and riffs that really get your blood pumping. Rob Yahn is one of the best bassists of the genre, his basslines are audible and fast as hell. Gene Hoglan is a great thrash drummer, in the ranks of Dave Lombardo and Ventor Reil.
As for the songs, they are so freaking fast and incredible. All songs are great, the skip button isn't needed. Just pick this up, along with Slayer's "Reign In Blood", and Kreator's "Pleasure to Kill", which are the other two albums of the "Unholy Trinity".
PS, this album absolutely KILLS "Master of Puppets" by Metallica.
Need Thrash?.......2006-08-08
If you are in need of some truly godlike Thrash, then Dark Angel is definitely worth a look. It is a rotten shame that these guys broke up after releasing a handful of amazing records. A friend of mine loaned me this CD and I simply can't get enough of it. While it is only seven songs, the songs range from 3 to 8 minutes in length and are fast, heavy and straight to the point. There is also a version out there featuring two bonus tracks, Merciless Death (Live) and Darkness Descends/Perish in Flames (Live). Other than the talent Dark Angel displayed, they contained an attitude that was anything but weak. All the songs range from topics like Nostradamus to the destruction of Sodom by the hand of God and to fighter planes in dog fights. The lyrics are clever and original; the bass is quite audible, the guitarists are precise and play excellent solos, the vocalist is clear and let's not forget about the drumming... very, very fast and very, very good.
Nowadays, most people only pay attention to the big four U.S. Thrash Bands (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax), but there are plenty of Thrash bands out there like Dark Angel and the Big three of Germany (Destruction, Kreator and Sodom) among plenty of others. You just have to spend some time and look for them.
Dark Angel left their mark in the metal community with their albums and had inspired many metal bands, such as the Polish Death Metal Band Vader who have covered of Merciless Death and the band Malevolent Creation has a great cover of Perish in Flames as well.
Like I said, if you need some more Thrash to add to your collection and do not have this, make it a priority to own Darkness Descends. While Amazon does not carry this album anymore, you can find it by looking in independent stores or online at other websites. Hoped this review helped.
Got Darkness?.......2006-07-01
Whatever happened to these guys??? No offense, but this blows Master of Puppets out of the water! Along with Reign in Blood and Pleasure To Kill, it is part of the so-called "Unholy Trinity" of 1986-and for very good reason. Simply stated, all the tracks are killer, no filler. However, why are these guys compared to Slayer? They don't sound anything like the "fab four." Anyway, if you can't get enough of albums such as the ones previously mentioned, then pick this one up, you'll love it. Here's a brief run-down of the tracklist:
Darkness Descends-5/5: Incredible opener! Hold on to your car seat!
Burning of Sodom-5/5: tied with the title track as best
Hunger of the Undead-5/5: these guys just don't let up.
Merciless Death-5/5: check out the bass intro.
Death is Certain (Life is Not)-5/5: should have been a classic.
Black Prophecies-5/5: slower than the rest of the album, but also the heaviest and darkest
Perish in Flames-5/5: PERISH IN FLAMES! PERISH IN FLAMES!!
Speechless..........2006-05-30
That's right, the first time I heard this album (and every time after) I get knocked on my f*cking ass and I'm so enthralled by the almighty thrashiness and unforgiving SPEED that is this album I am at a loss for words. When I listen to this album I mean I get sucked into another friggin' world I tell ya! I almost lose touch with reality so much that I can't even physically headbang! Ok ok so I'm exaggerating a tad but you get the point.
I know everyone knows Gene Hoglan and his obvious greatness but honestly he's not necessarily the best part of this album or even what makes the album, it's much more than that. It's the whole band here, the DUAL shredding guitarists Eric Meyer and Jim Durkin (both underrated), the thumping bass that actually IS pretty audible and heavy, and Don Doty is a damn underrated vocalist, I wish we heard from the man more often. He reminds me of a more American version of Mille Petrozza from Kreator, who's certainly one of my favorite Thrash vocalists ever.
As for the songs, I mean these are clearly the fastest songs ever produced by man! You just gotta love the line in the title track "The city is guilty, the crime is life, the sentence is death...DARKNESS DESCENDS!" Just classic...f*cking classic I tell ya! The next track 'The Burning of Sodom' that is a hefty meaty slab of thrash evil enough to satisfy the hunger of even the biggest metalhead. I have to say though that Merciless Death is my personal fave here, it just has that pulsating, burning rhythm that gets my blood flowing? What can I say? Dark Angel throws a little wisdom your way with the song entitled "Death Is Certain (Life is not)" HELLO??? THAT'S SO TRUE! Just listen to the song and you'll find out. See, us metal folk aren't that stupid, we have some intelligence. Another highlight is the multi-faceted epic thrash masterpiece
of Black Prophecies which in its 8:29 min length keeps the song fresh from start to finish baby! Once again I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty specifics of the songs, you'll have to find that out for yourself!
In conclusion this is indeed the epitome of the soundtrack to the imminent apocalypse and you can bet your sweet ass that you'll see me kickin' back in my shelter with a brew and blasting this album while it's taking place wreaking havoc on humanity.
Recommendation? GET IT NOW!!!! I mean is it the be all end all of thrash? I'm not so sure, however, it is more than essential listening for those of you who claim to be 'metal'. Yeah it only has 7 songs and it's only 35 mins long but trust me, it's amazing to say the least.
Extreme metal in its purest form.......2006-05-09
Oh yeah, this is how thrash was meant to be played. Agressive, fast as hell, and pure attitude. This has got to be the most intense thrash release I ever had the pleasure to listen to. Almost every song in here is has the same level of intensity from start to finish. ("Burning of Sodom" to which extent it becomes scary)
A daunting achievement in the history of thrash. Reign in Blood comes nowhere close into topping this relentless beast. Buy it and or God so help me I'll make you.

I have no idea what it's really called but there's this site where you can download the music off. It's call the unoffical DA music = http://tracker.aliasboards.de/ It's the one called..."bike ride" or something like that! Oh yeah, you need a bit torrent client to download the music. Enjoy!
Not a true soundtrack.......2004-04-28
This is just another collection of pop music, labeled as a soundtrack with the pretense of cramming the music into the show. The background music and ambient soundscapes of the show, totally lacking from this album, would surely be more pleasant listening, and if you're looking for the real music of the show, this "soundtrack" is sure to leave you cold.

This collection of American songs spanning 150 years shows Deborah Voigt, one of the world's leading sopranos, in a new light. She successfully achieves the transition from the larger-than-life operatic stage to the intimate world of song, especially in the more outgoing, dramatic pieces. Voigt enters into each composer's style with complete empathy. Charles Ives was an irrepressible maverick and a stylistic chameleon. Voigt captures the songs' hymn-like simplicity and irreverent rambunctiousness, though her voice is a bit too heavy for them. Leonard Bernstein's jazzy irony also needs more lightness, but the slow love songs are done beautifully. Voigt really comes into her own in Charles Griffes's lush impressionism, evoking the sultriness of Cleopatra and the rhythms of a Spanish dance, and Amy Beach's unabashed effusive romanticism. Composer Ben Moore is a child of our own time, born in 1960. He moves between many styles with natural ease. Set to great English and American poetry, some of his songs were written for Voigt, and she sings them to perfection. The splendid pianist Brian Zeger provides both leadership and support. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Mixed results.......2006-02-22
This is an interesting collection of American songs, but I don't feel that Ms Voigt sold these selections to me. She still sounds like an opera singer trying to squeeze a very powerful and large voice into smaller setting for these songs, with mixed success. She is much, much better than many of her fellow sopranos that tried such repertoire, but I feel that she only gets it right in Amy Beach and Griffes songs. And even there, she does not have a sound that would make every song recital fan happy.
And what's with the title of this album? I think she is a classy artist and deserves better than such silly title, her label probably came up with that.
Nice try overall, but I hope Ms Voigt will do more Strauss and Wagner from now on, not more songs like these.
Like driving a Ferrari in a school zone........2006-02-02
Like a lot of big operatic voices, Voigt is hard to capture on CD; her recordings of Wagner and Strauss excerpts are good, but they can't convey the experience of hearing her live in an opera house. And singing with only piano accompaniment, as here, she simply can't use most of the power in her voice. As sensitive as her performances are I can't help feeling that she's having to hold back. For American song sung with more delicacy and grace I would suggest Barbara Bonney or Dawn Upshaw (I can't agree with previous reviewers' suggestion of Cheryl Studer's Barber, though Hampson is wonderful on that set).
Stellar Soprano Applies Her Considerable Talent to a Lightning-Quick, All-American Repertoire.......2005-11-08
It's a shame that soprano Deborah Voigt hit her greatest notoriety last year for being fired by the Royal Opera House for being too fat for the title role of "Ariadne aux Naxos" by Richard Strauss. She subsequently lost eighty pounds but luckily none of her vocal prowess as can be heard to great effect on this intriguing collection of American songs, 25 in all and averaging a little over two minutes each. It would have seemed like a mismatch to apply her powerful voice - famous for her big Wagnerian roles - to sometimes delicate tunes. Voigt, however, confounds expectations with a surprisingly nuanced performance that showcases her interpretative skills on a diverse set of musical styles.
Similar to what countertenor David Daniels did with his 2003 disc with guitarist Craig Ogden, "A Quiet Thing", Voigt and pianist Brian Zeger have created a wide-ranging lyrical repertoire that encompasses significant vocal demands while remaining intimate in setting. In fact, both Daniels and Voigt cover Leonard Bernstein's anti-war lullaby, "So Pretty", with haunting aplomb. She also manages to dance effectively over the "Da-ga-da-ga-dums" of Bernstein's challenging "Piccola serenata". Voigt does wonders with the opening Charles Ives selections by not overplaying the innate sentiment of the tunes, in particular, soaring with the highly dramatic "The Children's Hour" by Longfellow and even covering the churchy warhorse, "At the River", with conviction.
There are eight highly individualistic songs by Ben Moore that stretch Voigt with bountiful results. The standouts of the Moore set are the English sea chantey-like "The Ivy-Wife" by Thomas Hardy, the lushly romantic "I Am in Need of Music" by Elizabeth Bishop; the sweeping "Darkling, I Listen" by John Keats; and the discordant waltz, "Bright Cap and Streamers", by James Joyce. For me, the highpoints of the recording are the last two sets by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Amy Beach, both of whom tap impressively into Voigt's natural theatricality proven especially by her performances of Griffes's lush "Cleopatra to the Asp" and Bishop's rolling "I Send My Heart Up to Thee".
The one shortcoming of the recording overall is that the briefness of the songs does not really capitalize on Voigt's impressive dramatic capabilities in showcasing changes in characters she would have been allowed in her opera roles. For all the limitations it represents, this is a genuine recital album, and truly transcendent moments are fleeting at best especially given the variety of moods that need to be expressed in lightning-flash strokes. However, taken for the genre it represents, this is a stellar recording to appreciate a singer who is able to do more than Wagner and lose weight.
May have a heart but what good is it if the artistic results are a void?.......2005-10-31
The header says it all. Thumbs down all the way. Get instead the Samuel Barber double set with Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson if you wish to experience true heartrending Americana. As another reviewer put it, you get no gimmicks and no camp from these two distinguished artists.
Great new context for Voigt.......2005-09-30
It is great to hear Voigt in an American lieder recital. She is a top vocalist in her vocal prime. I think this is a lovely disc, and it really takes off especially with the songs of Ben Moore who has written many works just for Voigt. She tones down the volume of her sound and reins in the dramatic aspect of her soprano to give these songs a proper context and remains in service of them throughout the recital. Give this one a try! EMI - Release her Marshallin from Der Rosenkavalier, I think it would be wonderful. I know she just took on that role this summer.

VNV Nation's Darkangel & Tempest.......2007-05-19
I am in the process of purchasing every concievable single and album from VNV Nation and I came across the Darkangel Single and I am deeply moved and impressed by the album version of Darkangel and the remix. The demo 'Tempest' was also a beautiful song. Please read further below;
It is with a solemn nature that I put down my own song meanings and thoughts on these two songs I will discuss each song separately but I do need to state that both songs deserve praise in their own right. "Darkangel" is better known than Tempest, but Tempest alone has its own draw-power.
DARKANGEL (Album - Remixes - Edit Versions)
Darkangel originally appeared off of the Empires album and garnered some intensive attention due to its lyrical content. Not only did this song have lyrical punch but also a great background electronica synth combo. Personally this song has become one of my all time VNV Nation favourites to listen to because the lyrics mean something to me.
"In your dreams you see me clear
I have no restraint, no fear
Powerless I watched from faces I'd assumed
My purpose set, my will defined
Caress the air, embrace the skies
Escape the sorrow and restraint of mortal cities."
The opening of the song starts off with a slow melody that begins to be manipulated by electronica induced bass and synth's. The song has an artistic mesh to it. Many folks I have talked to have their own intepretations on the meanings or hidden messages within this song and its lyrics. For me Darkangel represents a person who has suffered so many pains, this person has been cast aside by his own choosing. This person seeks to right an injustice suffered to someone he knew or cared about. This song touched me early on hearing it and many people including myself could gain much from the lyrics.
"Give me time I will be clear.
Given time you'll understand
What possesses me to right what you have suffered.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward."
As the song continues the listener is drawn further within the mindset of this vindicated person. This person has been through hell, a hell made from his own mistakes and other's scorn. Now this person has come to a realisation that to seek retribution he is to make a literal war within himself and others. Some may say this person is a vigilante, but the lyrics pose a interesting conundrum. You can make what you want of these lyrics.
"So many years I stood among the thoughts and tears of those I served.
Among my own I was alone through my own doing.
All the years I walked unknown behind the faces I assumed.
Powerless to clear your mind of what you'd suffered."
"They fall again.
They fall again."
This person who has faced so much, now posesses a clear conviction to right the wrongs of the past for this unknown person, for himself. But this time he has forsaken the faces he had assumed, and now is himself. This could correlate to how we treat people, how we show one person one face, and another person another face quite different. For me, the lyrics ask a question so pertinant in today's day and age. "Are we comfortable being ourselves, who we were born to be?"
"Give me time I will be clear.
Given time you'll understand
What possesses me to right what you have suffered.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward.
There is no faith in which to hide.
Even truth is filled with lies.
Doubting angels fall to walk among the living.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward."
Toward the end of the song, this unknown person (could be any of us, or each of us - the listeners), comes to a realization, that the total war he wants is infact within himself. It is him fighting his inner demons that have for so long attempted to confine him and subdue him. His sense of faith is no more, the truth he knew is infact a lie. So his realisation is this;
"I'd only come here seeking peace.
I'd only come here seeking me.
It seems I came to leave."
And in the end, it is clear, that to fight his demons and end that war within himself, he must seek peace, seek himself from the wars and the lies and the hurt he suffered and inflicted onto another. And his realisation, sad as it is, is to leave - to leave the place of sufferage.
TEMPEST (Album - Edit Versions)
This is a beautiful piece of work. Tempest was first listened to by me with my friends on a radio station and I knew I had to get this song and finally did as it was included on the Darkangel single. This song is very emotional, the beat is slow, heart wrenching and a song for all who can gain strength from a song that suits those in pain, hurt or sadness. Many folks I have spoken to and many fellow VNV Nationers have stated this is one of their better songs and their favourites as it is becoming mine;
"These are not words, they're only feelings.
There are no sounds that you can hear.
There is no form that you can touch.
There are no colors for you to see."
The opening lines of this song represents what this song is for - the Tempest (self titled) is indeed the pain/hurt/sadness that is inflicting your life at the moment of listening, whether real or surreal. The "Tempest" cannot be seen, or heard but you know it is there, it is within your heart, your mind. Only where you can find it - the listener;
"The only sound is a distant thunder.
A tempest rages so far away from me.
I walked for miles and I started running
Towards the sound and storm where you might find me."
As you move further into this beautifully worded song, you are drawn into a sense of surrealness. The 'tempest' represents the pain you hold, and sometimes that pain or hurt involves another. This song can represent a love gone bad, or an unrequeted love. But it can also represent the sadness you hold over a past event.
"And I ran until I had the feeling
That the Tempest I had heard surrounded me.
Here my heart so filled with loving
Cried out and told of wonders that I feel."
This 'Tempest' surrounds you, only with love in your heart, a pure and unbridled love can you win over the tempest that surrounds you. Love can conquer all, it is powerful. of a child, of a parent, of a significant other - all can conquer even the deepest pain and sadness.
"Here my heart is so filled with loving.
And I tell myself, I keep repeating
That your ways are bringing you to me.
And I tell myself, I keep repeating
That your ways are bringing you to me."
Toward the finality of this tragically poetic song, it is transformed into a sad melody of hope, of someone who is in so much love knowing the strength of another's love is pulling them closer, bringing that person to them. Riding through the tempest that threatens to engulf you - to the safe arms of your loved one, where the tempest holds no sway;
"And I tell myself, I keep repeating
That your ways are bringing you to me,
That I will find my true salvation,
That these ways of mine are bringing you to me."
"Because here my heart so filled with loving
Crying out the wonders that I feel.
Here I will find my true salvation
And my ways are bringing you to me"
This is another wonderful gem of a song by VNV Nation back from 1999. Take your own meaning from this song when you listen to it, enjoy it and know that whatever your reasons and immitations of the lyrics - you aren't wrong. Take what you can, and you are correct - for this song has many meanings, all right for the individual.
worth it for "Tempest" alone.......2007-01-09
Normally, a 3-song e.p. isn't really worth the effort to obtain, no matter what kind of a fan one might be. "Darkangel", the pre-release single for VNV Nation's third album EMPIRES, is one of very few exceptions to this rule. The first track, "darkangel (gabriel)", is a mildly reworked remix of the album version that adds more bass to the beats and a bit more high end, resulting in a version that is crisper and tighter than the album version. The second track, "darkangel (azrael)", is slightly less successful, though not bad by any means. Longer than the original, it relies on a two-chord arpeggiated synthesizer pulse for most of its length. The sound begins to get repetitious until the very end when the coda kicks in. The coda comes as something of a surprise, giving the listener a little unpredictable jolt and tying this remix back to the original version. Not a bad track at all, but slightly repetitious.
However, "Darkangel" contains the best b-side / non-album track since XTC's "Dear God" in 1986 -- "Tempest". Not only is this song one of VNV Nation's very best (and this is quite a feat), it rates as one of the most touching love songs ever recorded. The nervous twitch of the percussion, the simple three-note chiming motif of the rhythm, and Ronan Harris' soft voice work together flawlessly. There is no soppiness or forced emotion; rather, the story told in the song feels completely pure and utterly heartfelt.
Short-story version: This is one of the very few singles worth purchasing. All three tracks are great, and if there is any justice in this world, "Tempest" will be recognized as one of the greatest tracks not only in the EBM genre, but in the history of pop music. Even the casual fan of VNV Nation should go to extreme lengths to pick this one up.
Hear my Heart; Its so Filled with Loving.......2005-02-19
Ahh, VNV Nation. Few bands really compare to the quality of what they produce, and fewer still with the messages in the mix. With a body of work spanning from Advance and Follow to FuturePerfect, they've built an EBM plateau that is lovely in both volume and the worlds it covers and that many a band is measured against. The praise is well-deserved too, the albums denoting changes in the approach and subsequent refinement of what VNV Nation is, and I'm glad to have them all.
And that's what leads me to this single because I always want more.
Dark Angel falls into the expanse between Advance and Follow and Empires and, at first glance, doesn't seem to hold much. The song Dark Angel is already on a main album, and although the mixes of it are good they don't really merit buying a single. I say that noting that I'm not one on remixes to begin with and these are pretty good, but still..
That said, there's another track on the album, Tempest, and that's another story because its only here.
While I'm not going to go as far as to say that Tempest is worth buying a single over, I will say that I was impressed by the things that Tempest conveyed and I immediately needed it when I sampled it. That's a strange sensation, need, and one that sometimes comes with songs when they have a pulse behind them. And Tempest evoked that demon within me, making me go out and acquire, because I thought the song was beautiful. Its one of VNV Nation's songs that is filled to the brim with positive emotions, carrying its heart of its sleeve and citing the positive ramifications of love. That's something I look for in a lot of VNV Nation tracks and especially in their B-sides, because they oftentimes sparkle like rare gems when the singles are picked apart. And while Tempest isn't a fast-moving track, it builds like a stormcloud on the horizon that looms within such a perfect voice, and is something I'm glad I didn't miss.
"I walked for miles, and I started running, towards the sounding storm where YOU might find me." Yeah.
To note, I've rated the single on that song alone, because its a single and Dark Angel is a good track. If you want some VNV Nation to see what its like, you need to go and get yourself some Empires or FuturePerfect and try that on for size. Then, if the addiction gets you, come back for all the "little things."

Customer Reviews:
Epic Melodrama.......2006-08-16
This is My Dying Bride's masterwork. From beginning to end, the power and melodrama is perfectly evident, and even displays shades of the epic sense they derive as fans of Dead Can Dance. His voice is not as assured as it is with later releases, but the emotion and despair is palpable. This is in my top ten in ANY genre. Some have complained about the guitar sound in the production, but, trust me, you get over it by the second track. If you don't own it, buy it, and find out what all the cool chaps on your block are talking about.
Only 5 reviews? WTF?!.......2005-01-13
It irks me to know that groups like Matchbox 20 and Linkin Park can sell millions of albums for putting out tripe while much better bands like MDB get no press. I have recently developed a taste for doom metal, and this album is probably the genre's flagship record. I never thought violins would meld together so well with Black Sabbath-style riffing, but I was pleasantly surprised. The vocals take some getting used to, but they fit the music quite well. This by no means the most technical music out there, but MDB give meticulous detail to mood and atmospherics. If you like your music black, get this.
THE REPORT CARD:
The Cry of Mankind: B (first half is fantastic, the second half is just bizarre)
From Darkest Skies: A (ooh, this one is sure to take the smile off your face)
Black Voyage: A (epic yet bleak)
A Sea to Suffer In: B+ (Aaron ventures into a higher vocal register here)
Two Winters Only: A (instrumentally, this sounds like Opeth...a lot)
Your Shameful Heaven: A- (this song is fast, though still not comparable to what Metallica was doing in the 80s)
The Angel & the Dark River.......2004-09-07
First of all, I must say I love the title. Second, the music, as with most of My Dying Bride's work, is phenomenal. Even though I've always felt that Aaron Stainthorpe was the bane of MDB, he can't destroy their masterful works. The opening track, "The Cry of Mankind," is one of my favorite MDB songs ever. The only complaint I have with this album is the live tracks. They were a nice addition, but they don't sound quite that good. Anyway, I recommend The Angel and the Dark River to any fan of good dark metal.
Making Opeth look pop........2004-03-26
~This is thee modern Doom metal album to own as far as I'm concerned. The opener The Cry of Mankind is one of the most beautiful compositions I've ever heard (in metal or otherwise). The piano and gutiar melodies blend into an etherial abiance that the band had never achieved before. After I heard this song, I knew that their last album Turn Loose the Swans was no fluke. And while the end of the song is a cacophony of the sounds including that of a seashore, a woman gently whispering "Hello." and a chorus of voices pushing the first track into double digit time... the actual meat of the song is heavy yet magnificent enough to even make Enya cry.
~And while the other songs brood about in the direction Swans was taking (gutteral guitar riffs seamlessly blended with violin piano and keyboard accompanyments making the listener wonder why the keyman Martin would join the cheesy Cradle of Filth instead) they are far from filler. This might in fact be the last My Dying Bride album to have lyrics that don't retread into old territory or otherwise sound forced. The Death metal vocals are absent, but weren't a neccesity to their sound at the time. Most obvious on display in Two Winters Only, which could almost be mistakenly called Doom metal's answer to a power ballad. With each note it is obvious that time was taken in recording this album. But perhaps patience is necesary for the average listener.
~The final track Your Shameful Heaven (along with Cry) displays the band's willingness to experiment with more straight-forward song structures. Yet it is far heavier than any other track on the album, with a midpaced almost thrash-like appeal. And it makes a nice sandwich of the original studio recorded material.
~This newly remastered edition seems to include the Live at the Dynamo mini disc. Which was a brilliant idea, yet I notice that one of the tracks is missing, (Your Shameful Heaven I believe). This is unfortunate since the album includes The Sexuality of Bereavement, which could have been sacrificed for the missing track due to it's original and remastered appearance on the Trinity album.
~Still I give the album 5 stars for it's original content. Looking back many might wonder why the band hasn't truly evolved from the sound they established on this and Turn Loose the Swans, (with the exception of the experiental but not unlikable 34.788% Complete)? Perhaps there is no perfect answer, not every band can get better plus evolve with each album like Death did. But then I'm not so sure that My Dying Bride need to.
~I highly recommend this to any Doom fan (and maybe even the goth interested, although that's an inappropriate title here). Also I think thrash, speed, death and black could learn something from My Dying Bride. This an an excellent album to start with, and this album in particular is completely on the opposite end of the spectrum from more upbeat bands like In Flames or Iced Earth. the lyrics are very downtrodden and ready to take you to a level of sadness you may not even know existeted. At their shows more often than moshing you'll hear audience applause instead. But make no mistake, the band can tear up the heaviest tunes with the best of them. And you needn't worry about them treading into blues, country or... cowpunk as I call the last album Metallica.
I was a fan and this one is their best (from non-metal fan).......2004-03-03
I lost this one a few years ago & I just wanted to have this feeling again' so I purchase it again !!! 2track is the best
the doom era has pat away most of the bands became alternative rock bands I see it as a good thing !! enjoy!

The Best Laura Nyro Ever.......2002-05-18
Simply put, this is Laura Nyro's finest work. It was recorded in 1994 and 1995, but Laura's struggle with cancer kept it from being released at the time. This is not only Laura's best work but includes some of the best performances by anyone ever. The Super Audio CD has three extra alternate versions not available on the plain CD. Go buy an SACD player today and listen to these bonus tracks! It doesn't get any better than "Ooh Baby, Baby." If that song doesn't make you cry, you are not human. "Angel in the Dark" is full of priceless performances with beautifully recorded, rich piano accompaniment by Laura.

4.2 Their Best.......2006-10-27
Excellent cd. dark Angel was always like a freight train, but the lyrics on this cd are awesome! Some great riffs (as usual) with better production than the previous cd (Leave Scars). was their swan song and a damn good one..
Riffs.......2006-03-12
Lotsa people call this the ultimate prog-thrash album, and they're kinda right, kinda wrong. I don't think that it's the ultimate in terms of quality, but it has got the most riffs and the longest songs, so that goes for a lot. This album has one major flaw: Lousy vox. They just don't fit the music very well with too much vibratto, and the vocal lines aren't well written either. Shoulda just got another snarler like the dude on 'Darkness Descends'. And no, this album isn't as good as that one, but it's still pretty damn good, and is definitely quite overlooked.
Musicianship is top-notch, as you would imagine. The legendary Gene Hoglan is on display here, and while he certainly isn't at the top of his game he's still pretty great. This has also got some relatively top-notch production for a thrash album. Lots of clarity but still heavy enough. The leadwork is acceptable, but it doesn't really standout too much. Dark Angel isn't about leads, however, just the unending thrash assault, and that's what this album has got.
Honestly, the tracks here are a little bit samey-sounding, even for a thrash album, so we don't have as many standouts as you might like. Still, it sounds good when you're listening to it. I particularly like 'A Subtle Induction'. Definitely the most unhinged thing here, and with very amusing joke lyrics. Probably the single best part of the album is the intro to 'Psychosexuality'. That's just the most awesome, epic, eastern-tinged little thing you've ever heard. It's totally got a Nile feel to it. That overall is just one of the best tracks, some of the most varied riffing and relatively good vox. 'Act of Contrition' is probably the most immediately memorable song. The best chorus, vocally, and just a bit shorter and more accessible than most of the material. 'An Ancient Inherited Shame' is the longest track at 9:16, but still probably the catchiest thing here other than 'Act of Contrition', with a great gallop to the whole thing and some unintentionally funny vocals/lyrics. (I know this is a serious song and all, but a man repeatedly singing 'I'm not a whore!' equals funny. And it doesn't stop there either.) The album loses a bit of momentum here, with 'Trauma and Catharsis' and 'Sensory Deprivation' being the two weakest tracks on the album, but they certainly aren't bad.
Yeah, a good thrash album. Not a quite a lost masterpiece, but definitely worth getting.
WOW! A Thrash Album Packed With Riffs........2005-08-16
Yes, I can spare 67 Minutes of pure thrash from an underrated band.
What can I say about this classic album, well, Gene Hoglan has to be one of my favourite drummers right now, because he played with death, testament, old mans child and now with strapping young lad, I'd have to say that he did alot better with dark angel (especially in darkness descends), but not only does he play drums, he also plays guitar, nice job gene. Now on to the album.
Awesome Production By Terry Date (Who also produced Overkill, Pantera, Soulfly and Metal Church), and sounds alot better than Leave Scars (while still a good album, but suffered by poor production), the song are pretty lengthy but works well with alot of variation and (you guessed it) alot of riffs which run by intricatcy and time changes. As for The Vocals, Ron Rinehart can freakin sing, unlike Don Doty, he's alot powerful, stronger and...well... he can sing, maybe better than most metal singers out there (except Warrel Dane maybe).
Lets Have A Look track by track for highlights:
1. Time Does Not Heal: (11/10)A great start that accusticlly builds up into a total thrash mania.
2. Pains Invention, Madness: (10/10)Similar but better as the ending shows some of the most heaviest riffs ever.
3. Act Of Contrition: (9/10)A bit slower than the first 2 songs but has some cool lyrics and a great drum intro from gene hoglan.
4. The New Priesthood: (10/10)A bit faster than the previous track that features a guitar solo from gene hoglan .
5. Psychosexuality: (9/10)It was boring the first time I heard this one, but it's a grower, still a good track.
6. An Ancient Inherited Shame: (11/10)The longest of the bunch, and my favourite track, featuring cool riffs, cool lyrics and also the great vocals of ron.
7. Trauma And Catharsis: (10/10)Starts slow and builds up again into nice dark angel fasion.
8. Sensory Deprivation: (9/10)More mid-paced packed with more of the best riffs in the middle section.
9. A Subtle Induction: (11/10)The last song and a little bit more aggressive than the last few tracks which includes great solos from guitar duo Eric & Brett and more awesome riffs at the end of the song, what a great ending to an awesome album.
Sadly this is Dark Angels Last album and the last thrash albums of the early 90's(which grunge, death metal and CRAP nu-metal arrived into the scene, but now metal is stronger than ever), but if you want some pure sweet thrash metal, check this out now. You won't regret it.
