Fresh from their Inner City Posse/Dog Beats days and with a new concept and idea, the young Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope present us with the first episode of the dark carnival - Carnival Of Carnage. This album focuses a lot on the government shunning of the ghetto and lower class urban life. The intro introduces everything nicely, following into a great beat with the title track song that leads us into the real album and the best ICP song ever, the trademark Juggla. This song introduces the horrorcore songwriting and the sampling of Prince's Kiss puts this one into overdrive. There is no rock hybrid on this early work, all pure rap. First Day Out mellows things out, before we get into another dose of classic early ICP - Red Neck Hoe, while it may seem immature and reptitive upon first listen, the music as well as "lyrics" will grow on you. There are numorous weak cuts here including Is That You, featuring an unknown Kid Rock, the pedestrian Guts On The Ceiling. But things pick up for the slasher movie influenced must hear Psychopathic and Your Rebel Flag, as well as Never Had It Made and the pre closer Ghetto Freak Show, I also believe that the true overlooked gem though is said closer, the funky Taste - featuring, Nate The Mack, Capitol E, Jumpsteady and Esham about revenge on the govt's actions towards the ghetto life, the song cooks. So on the first page of the dark carnival, they introduce themselves on right start and this direction would only be polished and further explored as they went on.

Carnival Of Carnage.......2007-02-28

Here we have the very first Insane Clown Posse album, and first Joker's Card "Carnival Of Carnage". Recorded back in 1992 when ICP was 3 members. Before ICP ever had a record deal, just as young teenage kids. This album sold 17 copies on the day it was released, and thats the reason behind ICP using the number 17 in many songs throughout their career.

Intro: Spoken intro by Violent J. This introduces the Carnival Of Carnage to you. With carnival sounds in the background.

Carnival Of Carnage: 4/5 - This song sets the tone of the album. Produced by the legendary Esham. Just the words "Carnival Of Carnage" repeating over and over, over a nice beat.

The Juggla: 4/5 - One of the best songs on the album. Introducing Violent J to you as "The Juggla".

First Day Out: 3/5 - This song was later covered by Twiztid on the album Mostasteless. The theme to this song, is Violent J gets out of jail and goes on a date to "catch his nut".

Red Neck Hoe: 3/5 - This is the first song on the album with all 3 members of ICP on it. This track is basically dissin girls from down south. This song was later re-recorded with Twiztid on it in 1999

Wizard Of The Hood: 3/5 - Okay, this is like the 3rd version of this song, it was made twice before on Inner City Posse albums "Dog Beats" and "Intelligence & Violence". This is a thugged out version of "Wizard Of Oz".

Guts On The Ceiling: 2/5 - A song about Violent J walking around Detroit to find his body parts that he lost.

Is That You?: 5/5 - This is a song featuring the legendary Kid Rock back when he was about 21 years old. Probably the only time you will ever hear ICP and Kid Rock on the same track. One of my favorite songs on the album.

Night Of The Axe: 3/5 - This song is only available on the original version of the album. ICP later made a sequel to this song on the album Hells Pit called "Night Of The .44". This song is about Violent J going on a killing spree, its pretty violent.

Psychopathic: 3/5 - The beat to this song is kind of like a horrorcore version of "More Bounce To The Ounce" from Zap & Roger Troutman.

Blackin' Your Eyes: 2/5 - Another song only available on the original version of this album. Produced by Esham, and features Shaggy & John Kickchass rapping and Violent J just says a few words. So this is pretty much a piece of history as far as ICP goes. This song is about beating up girls who cheat or break hearts. But, what else can you expect from some teenagers.

Never Had It Made: 3/5 - Co-Produced by Esham.

Your Rebel Flag: 5/5 - This is a CLASSIC ICP song. Its about killing racist rednecks and burning rebel flag's. One of the very few songs that features all 3 members of ICP.

Ghetto Freak Show: 4/5 - Produced by Esham. Catchy hook.

Taste: 5/5 - Featuring Esham, Capitol E, and Jumpsteady. Good song to top off the album with. Also, features all 3 members of ICP.

Bottom line this is a decent album. Worth buying in my opinion. Especially if youre an ICP fan. Over all i give this album 3/5.

ICP's First Album, But Not Their Best..........2007-01-05

While this cd does contain some classic cuts, it's just not up to par with nearly all of the releases that follow this. Having said that, this is still a good debut that shows some promise. I mean you have to take into account that ICP had a very limited budget and limited studio technology. If you're a juggalo, then you already have this (or you should!). If you're an ICP fan who is more into rock/metal aspect of ICP and music in general (like most of ICP's fan base, including myself), then be forewarned that this cd was made before ICP starting introducing rock elements into their music. Since i'm a completist(and a big ICP fan), this is a must own.

These guys were really BIG here in Detroit before going national. I remember when this album came out - I was 12 years old and we were still using cassettes.

This was back when they were still called I-C-P, not "Insane Clown Posse". (ICP actually stood for Inner City Posse before CoC)

CoC is in my opinion is one of the best albums - definitely the best of the Joker cards. I also highly recommend Beverly Kills 50187.

What to expect out of ICP.......2006-07-02

If you're new to the Juggalo World. You'll love Insane Clown Posse.

What get's to me is how they make a Jokers Card, or any EP.

The first half of the CD is funny, the second half is scary.

That's what the 1st Jokers Card is like. That's how they all are actually.

Uncut Carnage.......2007-07-27

My intial review for this album can be found on the section with the 13 track version of CoC. This is to rather talk about the differences between the two, and there aren't many. If you're used to hearing the newer version it'll seem a little weird getting used to this if you're interested. This is recommended for purists, even though it is the original album. The newer version was remastered but there is no difference in sound, the only difference really, is the removal of two tracks - Night Of The Axe(the prequel to Hell's Pit's Night Of The 44) and Blackin' Your Eyes. It's never been explained why this was done. In a way though it is obvious that the violence level on the first jokers card is pretty rampant and even at times immature and over indulgent, and it also may seem appearent that Night Of The Axe and the more known standard of the album Psychopathic are the same song and Blackin' Your Eyes while entertaining doesn't really add anything. While NOTA is a fun song to hear, lyrically it's no different from the serial killer point of view poetry expressed in so many other ICP tracks. However it does exhaust the duo's early ambitions and was a popular track to perform live in the earlier days, so for Dark Carnival fare it is of somewhat historical importance. The other difference is the reversal of tracks Guts On The Ceiling with Is That You? And a removed ending skit for Psychopathic that sets up the premise for Blackin' Your Eyes. I recommend the original version with the two missing songs, but those who are used to hearing the newer version may find it a little disrupting.

The first out of six: above average........2006-09-26

This album being the first out of six that would soon be known as "Joker's Cards", you wouldn't expect very much from a band that not only had met just the basic guidelines for recording their debut, but are painted like two evil clowns. However, to fully understand a band like this, you have to look a little closer. Sure, they may be a bit scary and their humor can get sinister, but there is no doubt that they are smart. But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself...

Anyway, back to the album. ICP does a very good job here of not only releasing an above average debut, but starting the story of the Dark Carnival. There is absolutley no doubt that these guys can go a bit over the edge on parts of this album, like in "Night of the Axe", "Blackin' Your Eyes", or "Psychopathic". A few of those mentioned tracks cover a bit of the concept of the album, at least. The concept of this particular Joker's Card is the story of a ghetto, (in this case, Detroit,) banding together and creating carnage in the suburbs, where the people there have founded an environment of chaos, death, and horror for the lower class neighborhoods. It's how the carnage is caused and what specifically is done that makes up the majority of this album.

Among the tracks of violence and revenge, "Never Had It Made" seems to take a different aim. This cut is about a soul trying desperatly trying to find a way into Heaven, but is misguided along the way by a horrible life. Also, "Your Rebel Flag" attacks racism in a very angry way, and it's worth a few listens as well. "Taste" clears up the message of the album, where the ghetto baricades into the suburbs and gives them a taste of what they have lived with from the start.

Truth be told, this album is done well. Weak points include fairly dull beats for a lot of the album, not very many songs that get away from the whole "richie destruction" thing, and not being recorded very well. But keep in mind that this was released back in 1992, so for this album to still have appealing moments today is huge. I know Amazon said it was in 1994, but it was 1992, and it was Ringmaster that came in '94. Another thing: this is the uncut version of the album. The other version that Amazon has listed is remastered for sound, but they took off "Night of the Axe" and "Blackin' Your Eyes", and the difference in sound is almost not even noticeable. Also, the track listing for this version of "Carnival of Carnage" is not correct. Here's the correct listing:

I would recommend this album to anyone with an open mind, but just know what to expect and what to look for.

OLD SKOOL ICP.......2006-07-14

This album is so old-school and awesome. I highly recommend this to all juggalos and old-school rap fans. This is the First Joker's Card so juggalo's have to have this in their collection.

The Real Carnage.......2004-07-08

I really don't know why they remastered this album cutting off two great tracks. Maybe because "Blackin' Your Eyes" contains violence agains women, and that's a thing ICP is against nowadays, and violence against children in "Night Of The Axe", but I think it wasn't a nice idea to cut those songs. The remastered version added very little quality in sound. Believe me because I have listened both versions of the album and this one, the Uncut Version, is the one I own.
I have to say all tracks in this album are good, but they sound like a totally different band if you listen this one and The Wraith, or even Great Milenko, Amazing Jeckel Brothers... This album sounds way more like a rap record. My favorite songs in this one are The Juggla, Red Neck Hoe, Is That You and Never Had It Made. For those of you who like guest appearences in albums, this one has Detroit rappers Kid Rock (now one of ICP's enemies) and Esham (who has joined ICP's label Psychopathic Records).
This isn't the best Joker's Card, but if you want to own all Joker Cards and you have none yet, you can star with this one. But if you're not sure if you'll buy them all, try to get The Great Milenko or The Wraith first.
