Definitive Jux Presents II

Definitive Jux Presents II is the rarest of artifacts: a label showcase album that's consistent, cohesive, and utterly exciting. Listening to this potent New York label's artists is like being inducted into a secret society where hip-hop is smart and brutal, immediate and experimental--a true street art. 2001's Def Jux Presents was notable for the brilliant last recordings of the legendary Company Flow and their mastermind MC, El-P, who incidentally owns the Def Jux label. El-P dominates this volume, as well, producing nearly half of the tracks and starring on two. One of these, "Stepfather Factory," is the epitome of the Def Jux style: a dense, fierce fuzz with lyrics whose sci-fi turns of phrase never weaken their emotional punch. There's nothing here from the label's other heavy hitters, Cannibal Ox, although Ox man Vast Aire does crop up alongside El-P as part of the Atoms Family collective. The new stars this time are elegant DJ Shadow-style RJD2, baroque rhymer Y@k Ballz, and ultrasharp Boston MC Mr. Lif, who manages to name-check Harry Potter and Troy McClure on "Sneak Preview." This is odd, vivid, 100 percent compulsive stuff. --John Mulvey

4 out of 5 stars Definitive Jux (4.5 starz).......2004-07-12

Def Jux is simply one of the best labels out there right now for independent hip hop. With great artists such as Mr. Lif, Murs, Aesop, C-Rayz, El-p, Cannibal Ox and Rjd2, th line up is very solid and looks very promising for the future of underground hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars This is [good].......2002-09-06

I have listened to this album so many times I lost count. It is utterly essential listening for anyone into this music scene. This has not left my CD case even once, except to listen to it over and over. Have you ever shuddered when listening to a really great song? Do you ever get goosebumps or feel a tingle when you are deeply touched by a peice of music or a good book or film? Do you choke up a little when your favorite tune comes on. This record did that for me. I like every song, but the first track is the very best. I demand that you fork your hard-earned money over ... and get this record. You wont be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars the new hip-hop.......2002-04-21

this is the new hip hop that will lead us into the next millenium & in the future REAL RHYMES REAL BEATS REAL RAW HIPHOP

4 out of 5 stars I want more, gimme more. 4 1/2 stars.......2002-03-16

I love the direction that El-p's production is going in. I love all the beats they are so sci-fi/techno sounding and heavily layered. I think this is the best compilation album of all time, but I havent heard the Molemen - Ritual of the Molemen yet, I heard that is a good album. Anyway, Aesop comes with a strong track this time to make up for last albums dissapointing Kill Em All. Rob Sonic's track is cool but not as good as most of Sonic Sums material. Camu surprised the hell out of me, I think he's the 2nd best in MHZ aside from Copywrite. RJD2 track is unreal, I dont usually listen to just beats but I cant resist it. Atoms Fam has deffinately improved 110%. Yak B@llz song, pretty good but not as good as Tru City Killuz. Now for the best tracks, Mr. Lif and Murs have the illest cut on the album, Lif has me droolin for a new release. The other Lif track is nice too. I like the rest of the tracks, but they dont stand out as much. Worth every penny, dont let the price scare you.
