Fantastic Score, Ranging from Orchestral Granduer to Minimilist Ethnic Bliss!.......2007-05-28
What an album! Many things come to mind when listening to this CD. First of all, I haven't seen the film, so I must rely on other mental images when listening to the CD. Most of the music sounds alot like James Newton Howard's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire." This CD, however, is a VERY long and varied score, giving fans of several scoring genres a heaping dose of what they like.
Totally worth it... Get this CD.
Amazing what Howard can pull off!.......2006-10-02
James Newton Howard has done some of his best, most epic work against the clock. Late 2005, Howard had to provide 3 hours of music for Peter Jackson's KING KONG. Boy, did he deliver the goods! Rewind a decade ago from KING KONG and Howard was busy trying to save a failing production: WATERWORLD.
Howard managed to come up with triumphant fanfares, percussive action pieces, and beautiful underscore to enrich the film. Opening with percussion that sounds a lot like deep water dipping, we are thrust into a world full of adventure.
Some of the better tracks of the album include:
- Escaping the Smokers
- The Skyboat (Precursor to "Last Blank Space on the Map" from KING KONG)
- Helen Frees the Mariner
- Deacon's Speech (Awesome choral work enhanced by loud brass)
This is a score worth having so get your hands on it as soon as you can! It's a rare, expensive find. Thankfully, Amazon has quite a few copies to offer so buy it now!
Personal Favorite.......2004-04-28
This score is one of my favorites of all time. This sweeping themes at the beginning contrast nicely with the end of the album which slows down to a beautiful melody. Too bad there isn't more music from the film on the album.
Truly Epical Music.......2004-02-28
James Newton Howard is probably one of the most under-rated composers in Hollywood. Most of the time he's given dull assignments of scoring romantic comedies and indifferent drama movies. But once in a while he shows just how great he is at composing music for action movies. As with Marked For Death and Falling Down, Waterworld has moments of soaring, high-adventure and gentler, more relaxed moments for the quieter passages of the film. The music is lush and tropical which totally matches the look of the movie. It's perfect listening for winter because it'll make you feel warmer and it's perfect for summer because it'll match whatever sunny day it is.
The main Waterworld theme is featured frequently throughout the CD and never fails to excite. It's really very rousing stuff. Action movies these days for some reason fail to have strong themes (I blame Hans Zimmer's overexposure of Media Ventures) so when you come across one as good as this you have to snap it up as soon as possible. As sure way of telling whether or not a score is good is if it is used in zillions of trailers. This is surely the case with Waterworld.
The more peaceful tracks such as 'Swimming' and the music box theme juxtapose the driving action music and add a serene and mellow mood and an undeniable touch of class. Whether you want adventure or calm Waterworld has them both. It's a great soundtrack CD and one you cannot be without.
James Newton Howard in full throttle.......2003-03-09
James Newton Howard replaced Mark Isham for the score to Waterworld, a dumb film with an outstanding score. Here, Howard delivers strong orchestral melodies and magnificent choral chants, giving us a breathtaking 68 minutes of music. The music provides the film with action and driving movement with lots of energy and motivation. "Main Titles" is an ominous and atmospheric track with lots of sampled percussion and buzzing synths. The main theme itself is a 9 note motif played by the brass section that is heroic and awe-inspiring. "Escaping the Smokers" is a knockout action cue with the main theme delivered in full force with plenty of brass and percussion. "The Skyboat" is a hard hitting track with meaty brass stabs and a 5 note descending scale for the low brass that is pulse pounding and exciting. "Helen Frees the Mariner" contains the heroic main theme once again with plenty of snare drum accompaniment, as well as the energetic "Slide for Life". Other thematic material occurs throughout the atmospheric tracks, such as "Swimming", "The Bubble", "We're Gonna Die", among others. Tracks such as "The Skyboat" and "Arriving at the Deez" also contain ominous and driving synth sounds that keep the orchestra moving. "Balloon Flight" and "Dry Land" are 2 equally thematic tracks with lots of choir and orchestral sounds. The sound recording is awesome, as well as the performance. Truly a magnificent score that is energetic, fun, and thematic all in one.

tight and f*cked up just like i like it.......2006-03-23
this album is amazing in every way. I am by no means endorsing the use of pcp but these guys did an amazing job at describing it, but thats not even the point. This is a unique masterfully crafted album. The productions are well blended between the abstract sound you would expect from def jux producers with the more traditional hip hop sounds, and the lyrics paint a vivid portrait. I almost went into a sherm trip jus listenin. "the son of a senator died today he put too much on the blunt, found him leakin on the floor with liquid in his lungs, im stuck with these lines to say why bring a son or a daughter into a planet your payin to drink the water from" thats just ill, right?
LEAK BROS TAKE DA FLOOR.......2005-03-22
I BOUGHT THIS CD ABOUT 4 WEEKS AGO AND I MUST SAY THE LYRICS FROM
CAGE HAVE MATURED SINCE HIS BREAKOUT ALBUM MOVIES FOR THE BLIND.
THIS CONCEPT ALBUM TO ME GOT VERY ADDICTIVE AFTER SOME LISTENS...I MEAN A CD ABOUT PCP, AND RELATIONS TO IT...I DONT KNOW, BUT THESE DUDES TOOK THAT SUBJECT AND MADE IT NOT SO REPETITIVE. HONESTLY, THIS IS MY FIRST EC (EASTERN CONFERENCE)
CD AND THIS SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD AS ANY RELEASE ON DEF JUX NEEDLESS 2 SAY. ORIGINAL RHYMES FROM A MADMAN LIKE CAGE AND OLD SCHOOL RHYMES BY TAME ONE. CANT WAIT FOR CAGES HELLS WINTER ALBUM THOUGH.....
Awesome!!.......2005-02-04
one of the best cd's this year. the production is tight. much better than other "major" label releases.
Leak bros make a splash!!!.......2005-02-02
I have to admit that when i first heard Tame1 was linking up with Cage for a "leak bros" album my first thought was "why doesnt Tame hook up with Copywrite instead+give us a str8 forward battle album of bibilical proportions??!!" Not because of the subject matter but purely cuz i aint feeling Cage at all. But credit where its due, BOTH mc's are on fire on this project. The album is amazing, to put it mildly. The only fault with it is the fact its so short, the only weak track in my opinion is "stargate" (cage's solo joint). Apart from that its damn near perfect. The beats are all dark with thumping baselines, eerie samples+completely off the wall lyrics that never fail to grab you from start to finish. Personally im dying for part 2 already+chances are i'll still be pounding this until that appears. Dive in....the "water(world)" is just fine!!!
Not just for dust heads.......2004-10-15
When I heard that Cage and Tame One of Eastern Conference were getting together to make an album entirely about angel dust, i was a little skeptical. Despite the singular topic matter, the album is diverse; 100% cracked out rhymes by both Cage and Tame who have stepped up lyrically from their previous releases. The beats come from a variety of big underground names: Mighty Mi, J-Zone, Camu Tao, RJD2, El-P and others, each providing a different soundscape for the leak bros. demented lyrics. My favorite cut would have to be RJD2s cinematic "Gimme Some Death". The only cuts I didn't like was J-Zones as it sounded too much like one of the beats he gave Akinyele and El-Ps. The only guest is Yak Ballz on the hook of the first song. If you are a fan of the Definitive Jux or Eastern Conference rappers, or of rappers in the horrorcore genre, check out this album.

pretty good but somewhat simplistic trance/house.......1999-05-14
I got this cd because I had heard some other Aqualite songs on some trance compilations. This cd is alright, but it has a significant house influence (which is fine, but I didn't expect it). In general, most of the songs are fairly simplistic and perhaps a tad too repetative.
