One of the best CD's out there!.......2007-05-10
All ages and musical backgrounds love this CD. The Baltimore Consort are amazing. One really feels one is in a smoky pub in the 14oo's getting plastered with England's best musicians! Don't miss "Pox on You;" my kids absolutely howl with glee at the "bass fartophone." I haven't heard laughter like that come out of my little boy since he was a toddler. "Sweet Sir Walter" features one of the guys singing in a falsetto that sweeps lustily down into a Tim Curry-esque (think Dr. Frank-n-furter)gutteral guffaw of delight. So outrageously fun one forgets one is listening to Renaissance madrigals.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-25
These bawdy catches and ballads take us on a journey to the taverns and other social gathering places of the the real 'Merry Old England'. Some of us may be mildly shocked by the directness and earthiness of the text, but everyday life in the 17th century was much more 'down-to'earth- and forward. These texts-some blatant and other euphemistic-fully explore the spectrum of humor from the sly smirk to the back-slapping guffaw.
The singing of both ballads and catches belongs to a long and venerable tradition in England. The natural habitat of the of the catch was the tavern, while the ballad was known in a wider variety of social settings as well as the stage. By the end of the 17th century, ballads were collected by connoisseurs of popular culture and published in anthologies. The main source for this recording, 'The Catch Club, or 'Merry Companions', was printed in 1762.
A quote from the catch-philosopher (of 'Come, come let us drink') is offered by the Baltimore Consort: "...wine and good cheer will in spite of our fear inspire our hearts with mirth..the time we live, to wine let us give, since we all must turn to earth...."
This is an excellent collection of songs; quite interesting and varied. The instruments are played skillfully, and the voices, for the most part, are good quality. However, as with all 'folk-like' songs, the diction is not always clear, and that is very true of several of these on this disc. The female voices were more difficult to comprehend much of the time. The text is printed out, so ultimately familiararity will make them easier to understand. I do like the disc, and think that it needed to be done.As to a previous criticism concerning the fact that it wasn't 'true' barroom singing. Of course, it's not!!!If it were, you would not understand any of it!!!!!Enough said.
Prelewd to Postlewd.......2005-09-28
The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of older, bawdy (for its time) music possible.
The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could. This is particularly true of the songs on this disc, where many are derivative of anonymous jokes and stories, and much of the music is likewise folk-tune and anonymously composed.
Some of the songs can be rather shocking. As Mary Anne Ballard writes in the accompanying notes, 'We must remember that in the days before indoor plumbing and pooper-scooper laws, everyday life was of an earthier flavour than it is today.... The men of the singing clubs and the ladies of stage poked fun at themselves and their companions with wit, pleasantry and contrivance.'
The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. However, some well-known composers are represented among the pieces here - Purcell, D'Urfey, Aldridge, and others.
The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Mark Cudek (cittern, guitar, recorder and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (recorder, viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute), Chris Norman (flutes), Webb Wiggins (tambourine and 'virginals'). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.
Added to the regular consort players are the Merry Companions, including Peter Becker (baritone), Alexander Blachly (baritone), Paul Shipper (bass, belch-canto), and James Weaver (baritone).
One more addition includes a guest artist, Lorenzo Labbrobacio, playing of all things, the 'fartophone', a rather mysterious instrument indeed. Labbrobacio defies identification on the internet other than references to this disc, and so the mystery deepens.
This is music that is interesting, truly fun to listen to, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it a joy both in musical and humourous tones.
Sounds like they're singing Christmas carols.......2004-11-09
This recording is professionally produced - perhaps too much so. I've been in a few taverns and heard my share of bawdy songs. I am used to hearing them sung with gusto, with a wink and a naughty smile, to the raucous and enthusiastic appreciation of the audience. The songs on this CD are performed entirely straight. The results are technically competent but fail utterly in conveying the spirit and fun that make this genre worth listening to.
A sly and rollicksome good time!.......2002-11-29
On this recording, the Baltimore Consort and the Merry Companions are full of fun, both blatant and tongue-in-cheek. Soprano Custer La Rue and the instrumentalists of the Consort are joined by a quartet of classical male singers (Peter Becker, Alexander Blachly, Paul Shipper and James Weaver) with quite a theatrical sense of humor. The two groups take turns presenting ribald tavern songs of merry old England, interspersed by light, catchy instrumentals listed in the credits as the "Prelewd", the "Interlewd" and a "Fresh Ayre". Drinking, sex and other bodily functions are both celebrated and ridiculed in songs that are cleverly worded and enthusiastically sung, and in at least one case, accompanied by a mysterious instrument (reminiscent of P.D.Q. Bach) called a "fartophone". Especially amusing are the "catches" or rounds, and the new meanings that result from the staggering of words when several different verses are all sung together. It sounds silly, and is silly, but that's the point of it all--celebrating the "earthier flavor" of life 17th and 18th century England. My copy came with a parental advisory sticker stuck fast to the case, but my mother didn't seem overly concerned, and in fact enjoyed it too when I played it for her! For more fun Renaissance vocals, both salacious and serious, try "All At Once Well Met: English Madrigals" by the King's Singers, and "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain, Germany" by the King's Singers and the Consort of Musicke.

Customer Reviews:
Boring, sad.......2007-04-29
This isn't quite "music" - it's closer to the kind of bloodless, overproduced orchestral music made popular in the 50s and 60s for older people who lacked a background in the classics, yet enjoy sentimental easy listening. This sort of thing has long been replaced by the likes of easy rock and easy listeing jazz, though it's possible that there are still listeners who haven't been exposed to much else, or otherwise have depressed standards in their popular music. Even Lawrence Welk had more variety and personal style in his presentation of music for older people.
This isn't even nostalgic anymore - just dull.
Mantovani's Music is the Best Ever!.......2005-10-13
This is a wonderful three-CD compilation of some of the best original recordings made by the Grand Master of Light Orchestral music. But it also contains an added bonus: one of the CD's reproduces in its entirety the 1960 LP "Operetta Memories" which, although hard to find on CD, is by far one of Mantovani's finest albums of sound artistry which charted in the top 40 for 3 months in 1961. Today's marketing teams might have entitled this LP, "Strauss Waltzes ..And More" because it followed a few years after the phenomenally successful stereo LP recording of Strauss Waltzes (1958) and included the great studio version of "the hymn to champagne" Die Fledermaus Overture, and another Mantovani concert favorite, the Gypsy Baron Waltz, also known as the Sweetheart Waltz which has the Blue Danube running right through the melody as only the genius of Mantovani could create. The "more" is represented by extraordinary arrangements of popular operetta music by Franz Lehar and Emmerich Kalman. Mantovani's inventive sounds and synchronized strings are nothing short of spectacular on Kalman's Gypsy Princess Waltz and Lehar's Count of Luxembourg Waltz and Merry Widow Waltz. All ten tracks are time-honored melodies that you will keep you humming and remembering how incomparable the Mantovani sound is and will always be. Purchase this CD set for 48 tracks of the very best of Mantovani's prolific discography.

The Jacka - The Jack Artist.......2006-01-09
The Jacka's sophomore album "The Jack Artist" (2005) is off the hook. I came across this independent release recently upon recommendation and am very happy with it. Representing The Bay The Jacka (aka Shaheed Akbar), a member of the Mob Figaz is an established yet very slept on MC who teamed up with his talented producers Rob Lo (majority of production) & Maki and provided an album to remember. The Jacka impresses by delivering quality reality rap all throughout this release, he has got a mostly laidback flow that is matched well by tight production, Jacka's rhymes and the beats and samples kept this listener entertained from start to finish. The album opens up with "Never Blink", Jacka collabs with J Stylin and Dub 20 providing a solid intro. Jacka then shines on "Iller Clip", feeling his chorus and the beat. "Get Out There" has the makings of a commercial single, Jacka sings to the ladies on this one repping himself with pride. Jacka's fellow group member FedX then drops in for "Standing by Starz". Jacka hooks up with Cormega & Rydah delivering a dope cut for the streets with the "More Crime" (Remix). "Girls Say" and "Looking At It" follow, Jacka rhymes to the ladies on the first, Yukmouth and Keak Da Sneek make an appearance on the later. The Mob Fingaz crew rhymes together on "Sometimes I" a track that builds up. The producers got creative on "Feel This Clip" mixing vocals to create a crazy sounding personality. Backed by an ominous sounding beat, Jacka, Dub 20 & Husalah deliver some raw rhymes while talking about the fake G's on "Really Dope". The next track "Delicate Lifestyle" is exceptional and my 2nd favourite, Jacka, Trueq & Husalah shine together delivering memorable rhymes, Jacka pays tribute to Allah and talks about street life and finding Islam. The next standout for me is "Blind World", Husalah and The Jacka deliver a deadly collaboration providing some on point rhymes about keeping it real. My favourite track is "Won't Break Me" feat. Lil Ric, Rob Lo laces this cut with a premium instrumental, and Jacka shines rhyming and singing in a cut which I am getting endless play out of. Jacka gives a heartfelt dedication to his young daughther "Kuran", while repping his religion with pride. The album closes off well with "Barney" (More Crime), which mirrors the earlier track, this time without Cormega. The Jacka's "Jack Artist" is a slept on gem I recommend adding to the collection.
Terrible name, INCREDIBLE album.......2006-01-01
Albums like this are such a rarity...even though Jacka's name is a bit generic and almost begs to be typecast as another average gangsta rapper, this cat has dropped one of 2005's best underground albums. Even though he's gangsta, Jacka's lyrics radiate with emotion and blunt honesty as he finds himself caught between his desire to do right and follow his Muslim beliefs, and the thug lifestyle that beckons him and which he can't seem to escape. Every track on this album explores different things in life (guns, ho's, drugs, violence, etc.) and his attempts to stay clean. His voice, which many reviewers compare to Jadakiss, often slips into an aurally pleasing singsong flow that is complemented by the soulful production (mostly handled by Rob Lo and Maki). Almost every track is incredible, but standouts include the single "Barney (More Crime)", the opener "Never Blink", and "Never Equal". This is an album you MUST hear if you like Bay Area hip-hop or gangsta rap in general. Support great indie artists...buy "The Jack Artist"!
jack artist the nig who rap hardest.......2005-06-02
the 2nd album is tight. im feelin the one with dubb 20 and husalah the most. all the featured artists on here come tight as well. the jacka is gonna blow up. mob figaz on fire
Well rounded LP.......2005-05-03
The Mob Figaz are a group that were originally put on by Bo Loco. I have always liked this crew because they all have different styles even though there emcee names are real similar. This solo LP from the Jacka is nice; he has a flow that is kinda like a high pitch jadakiss, but unlike west coast rappers such as the Game the style is not too East Coast to the point where it sounds confused. A lot of the production on here reminded me of Pretty Toney such as the songs "Iller Clip" "standing by Starz" "Barney" and "Blind World". Its a good combination for a rapper like him. On the flip, Jacka gets loose on left coast oriented tracks like "Hey Girl" (remix of lead single) "Lookin at It" (w/ sicc cameos from Yukmouth and Keak Sneak). There are some radio oriented cuts on here too, espeically "Girls Say" and "Get Out there". Probably the best thing about Jacka is that he sounds comfortable about being himself instead of trying to sound like the rest of the newer music coming from the bay right now. The flow is real natural and not forced. Jacka is a young rapper in the game who has a big upside. This album has a lot of potential to blow up nationwide
The Jack Artist Is Truely A Work of Art!.......2005-03-18
The Jacka has made this album 19 tracks of nothing but pure quality from the beginning to the end. His talent and outstanding work ethic really shines with this one. He can probably take every song from this cd, and turn them into singles. "Never Blink", "Standing By the Stars", "Barney (More Crime)", "Really Dope", "Girls Say", "Kuran", "Dedicated Lifestyle", and "Iller Clip" are probably the songs that I listen to the most. Oh yea, and definatley "Hey Girl(Remix)". There's just too many good songs in this CD, and the album will appeal to any fan of rap music whether you like West, East, or Down South. This is an instant classic, and a perfect example of how an album should be made. Every rap fan should do themselves a favor and go buy this album now.

Fennell's masterpieces extend beyond Tokyo.......2004-08-05
Fennell has produced the most extraordinary recordings with the Tokyo Kosei winds and this cd is no exception. I purchased this cd to get a wider view of his conducting brilliance. Every song is played with perfection (besides a few trumpet blips on A Chorus Line Medley). If you have never heard Carmen Dragon's version of America the Beautiful you must. Having played it several times it is a wonderfully composed piece. The Dallas brass ring triumphant throughout this cd. And the woodwinds are exceptional. This is a great value and you must purchase it if you are a fan of wind ensemble music. The disc is full of energetic pieces typical of Fennell's music selections.

This 1994 recording of Frederick Fennell and the Dallas Wind Symphony is nothing short of outstanding. It combines Broadway and classical pieces with a wide variety of just plain entertaining fare. Beguine for Band highlights the mellow sounds of woodwinds sprinkled with the excitement of brass and percussion. The Chorus Line medley is Broadway all the way. Numerous seldom heard but utterly enjoyable pieces round out the album. It is sure to delight anyone who has played in a high school or college band. But its entertainment value is not limited to those folks. It's a good choice for everyone who wants to add fun to their music listening.

Product Description
In the Quiet - A good CD for your quiet time with the Lord. The songs are all originals by John, with the help of Bruce Carroll and Chris DuPre on two of them. The piano and harp are featured on these softer songs. You will sense the presence of God from Johns anointed voice. The eleven minute track #10 The Longing Soul is very stirring. The final song How can it be is another excellent song.

Customer Reviews:
Intelligent classical "pops" for lighter moods........2000-11-08
The "Light Music Classics" series on Hyperion, one of the highest-quality classical music labels around, has been a very pleasant surprise for me. Let's face it: some days you're just not up to the challenge of listening to Beethoven or Bruckner -- you're just looking for some light, fun, but intelligent music to enrich your day. That's where this excellent and highly popular series comes in.
Twenty compositions are featured on Vol. 3, written by various British masters of light orchestral music including Eric Coates, Ernest Tomlinson, and Haydn Wood. All of the pieces are six minutes or under; all are skillfully composed and well-played by Ronald Corp and his orchestra, who know how to give this undemanding but highly entertaining music just the right touch -- not too heavy, not too frivolous. Plus, the disc is quite generously filled at 78 minutes and change.
As usual, most of the pieces have tunes you'll be humming after you first hear them -- many have been used as signature pieces on British radio and television shows over the years. While I don't feel this volume has as many winning tunes as Vol. 1 or Vol. 2, it's still highly entertaining and an excellent value. This has turned into one of Hyperion's most popular series and it's not hard to understand why: it fills a niche for intelligent light music.
Look for Volumes 1 and 2, as well as "European Light Music Classics" and "American Light Music Classics" -- all on the same label and just as excellently played by the same conductor and orchestra.
