After a period of chart dormancy, Puffy Combs's Bad Boy label made a chart comeback with teen female quartet Dream's first single, "He Loves U Not." A catty, canny update of the time-tested petal-plucking romance guide, it's also something of a red herring on It Was All a Dream, the group's debut album. Although the disc is a well-made pop-R&B showcase for the girls' technically adept voices, the four have yet to develop a sound beyond competence; Destiny's Child they're not (yet). More bite along the lines of "He Loves U Not" and less "helpless" yearning (the unconvincing "Pain," the blinder-wearing "I Don't Like Anyone") would've made this Dream feel a lot closer to reality. --Park Slope

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunate.......2007-01-18

When their first Single "He loves u not" came out, I loved it and thought for sure their album would be amazing. I bought it and was shocked, amazed and finally too bored to go on. I was shocked when I heard the cheesy and corny interludes they had, something like a Britney Spears rip off. I was amazed that ever other song on their album sounded exactly alike. They had one good song, and then they tried to make a whole album based off of that.

Don't buy this, see if you can just buy that one single.

2 out of 5 stars They Say Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover (2 stars).......2006-04-30

It's hard for me to admit, but I bought this CD for two reasons, because the girls looked hot and they can dance. Thats about it. I must had had an extra $14 or so to throw away back in 2001, because this CD is strictly pop. I don't even listen to pop music and I've heard better songs this these girls sing. The girls have no singing talent whatsoever. And to top it off, it was marketed by Bad Boy records. There was about one or two tracks I did like, but at some points it was more than I can take. Maybe it was because I listen to more hip hop than pop, thinking I could take on some other form of genre. Since they were signed under Bad Boy records, P. Diddy or someone could have thrown a few rap verses on the album, but unfortunately whatever songs that were remixed are the only songs that have those verses. Even "He Loves U Not (Remix)" featured G. Dep, but why is that version not on here? Don't worry, because these fine girls had their brief moments in the spotlight, unfortunately that was the end for them. There is a group right now called "The Pussycat Dolls" that are going to be in the same boat 2 years from now. I'm glad someone stole this from me, jokes on them...

Standout tracks: He Loves U Not (origonal), and just maybe the song Pain

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Product Description

Recorded near the end of 2004, this is the last recording from Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Legend Johnnie Johnson. The first studio release from The Father Of Rock & Roll in ten years is also his last. After a hospital stay in August & September, Johnnie came back strong. Hale and hearty of spirit, he was in top playing form & always ready to play. You can hear his heart all through this recording, Johnnie s performance leading a band of world class St. Louis musicians through all original material. rock & roll, blues, & Johnnnie s unique hybrid of jazz, swing,& boogie woogie, laid on a foundation of blues & gospel. It is likely that Johnson knew this could be his last recorded statement. And it was a very personal project. Beach Weather is about Johnnie s life & frame of mind, Lucky Four about Johnson s fourth wife. Find Me a Woman, A Good Day, people who know Johnnie would tell you those lyrics could fit him as well. The 2 hard blues, just listen to Johnnie on em. Johnnie's was the deepest blues. The blues is at the base of everything Johnnie played. Johnnie would take you all the way home. Nobody did a turn around like Johnnie Johnson. Johnnie would make the earth move every time. All the songs on the project were a collaboration between Johnson, producer Jeff Alexander, & Rich McDonough. Mention must be given to the band. Rich McDonough is one of the finest guitar players on the scene today. His lead work through the 2 deep blues is exemplary, and his slide on Beach Weather is right on. The interplay between Johnson and McDonough through the entire recording is delightful, thrilling, and instructional. Gus Thornton's bass lines are tailor made for Johnnie Johnson, noone sounds like Gus. He is the man. And Joe Pastor is a wonderful, intuitive drummer. Listen to former Blues Brother frontman Larry Thurston sing "The Blues Don t Knock" and you may start a petition to bring him out of retirement. And Victor Johnson is another guy who should be a household name. There was a lot of feeling here. Johnnie Be Eighty. And Still Bad! Johnnie's last statement. Recorded on home turf, outside St. Louis, live in the studio, with friends.

.....you can use any superlatives you like. The great late J.Johnsons last recording has an extremely cool as well as intimate feeling. The songmaterial is simply awesome, written by Jeff Alexander, who is also the primus motor behind the project. (...)
If you are a genuine blues lover, then do yourself a huge favour and order this CD now! Also recommending the project
"School for fools" by Larry Thurston, wonderful CD as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Kahuna.......2005-08-15

If you like the blues you're gonna love this. Johnny Johnson may be gone but his music lives on. This was his last recording, which is a shame because he didn't leave a large library of music. The song "The Blues Don't Knock" by itself is enough to warrant the purchase of this CD, yet luckily all of the tracks are good. Got the blues? Not if you don't own this.

5 out of 5 stars Johnnie Be Bad SO Good!.......2005-06-11

If I was a piano I would not want anyone but Johnnie Johnson to play me. Beautiful, vital music. The melodies are magical, and Johnnie's left hand just fills up the songs. I love Rich McDonough's guitar playing! I love the whole band, and love the vocalists. The dynamics are incredible. You do not hear`this kind of dynamics in recordings enough anymore! The Blues Don't Knock is one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard! And Beach Weather is just a happy good time catchy stick in your brain not go away song. Johnnie was a special man. This is special music.

5 out of 5 stars Johnnie Be 80 and Still Bad!.......2005-05-31

Johnnie Johnson's rolicking boogie woogie blues piano on tracks 1,2,4, and 6 make my blue days sunny! I can't feel down when his gifted fingers dance over the keyboard painting a happy sound! Track 3's "The Blues Don't Knock" is a true blues lovers delight with Johnnie painting the mournful sound with his piano talents, Rich McDonough's guitar crying from the innermost depths and Larry
Thurston's always great vocalization interpreting Jeff Alexander's intuitive lyrics. Thurston's smooth, rich sound is on all tracks except 5. Victor "Big Daddy" Johnson supplies the perfect vocal interpretation of a woman tortured man on "Better Sell My House." This CD of Johnnie Johnson at his best and still bad is a work of art. Thanks to Jeff Alexander for making it happen so the rest of us blues lovers can enjoy "Johnnie Be Eighty and Still Bad! Mary C., KZUM, Lincoln, NE

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet..........2005-05-20

I can't stop singing "It's Beach Weather Baby",,. What a cool song, and it's about a happy man! Johnnie Johnson is my hero! I love this cd. The piano bounces my blues away! " A Good Day" is old time rock and roll, with words of strength and integrity. " The Blues Don't Knock" is sure true in my life. The music on here is great The songs are great. And where did this band come from? Amazing players, incredible vocals, A all around must have recording. I can't stop listening to it.

So sad Johnnie is gone, but it sure sounds like he went out rockin! "It's Beach Weather..." up in heaven for sure.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

Album Description

The Platonic ideal that all children's music should aspire to is quite simple: It must be as enjoyable for Mom and Dad as it is for the younger set. So simple, yet so elusive. When an artist hits this balance square on the head, as Jamie Broza does on My Daddy Is Scratchy, it's a cause for celebration. Charming yet never sentimental, respectful rather than patronizing to kids and their concerns, this collection of fun -- and wise -- songs speaks the language of children while being set to creative music intended to hold the attention of the "mature" listener ... In other words: A winning kid's album that parents will actually look forward to playing.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough.......2006-03-12

My 3 year old begs to listen at every meal. The songs are funny & easy to sing along to over & over.

5 out of 5 stars Why I LOVE this CD..........2005-12-12

My boys - 7 and 5 - will not let me stop playing this. What I like is that their favorite songs keep changing, and that they are learning to appreciate this record in layers. That's rare, and that's exactly the kind of musical experience I'm trying to encourage them to have.

Here's what I like about it: an amazing range of diverse music, and song style & arrangements that are encompassing enough to include kids singing along, a British rapper, as well as a bosa-nova beat .

The vegetable song even helped get my younger one to try every vegetable mentioned in the song! And he's been eating broccoli ever since!!!

I would recommend this CD to anyone with kids 4 through 9 or 10 - beyond the "kiddie" kiddie stuff, but still open to music that isn't on MTV. It's smart and hip, in a warm way, and most of all, funny in a very human, real way that (it would seem to me) anyone who likes that kind of stuff would relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Jamie, you're a genius.......2005-09-20

We stumbled on your tunes on a music service while looking for another "Jamie" and heard a few the other day getting ready for work. Tonight we listened to all of "My Daddy Is Scratchy" while eating dinner with our kids, Andrew (12) Samuel (8) and Lillianne (3). We all laughed til our sides hurt. My 12 year old told me those songs were ripped straight from his journal. Thanks for crafting the perfect soundtrack for a sophisticated kid's journey to being a cool old person...

Listening to this cd, watch the film...enjoy it then when doing something like tidying your room, slap it on. You'll find-and i can guarentee this-that during a certain song reprisal, you'll stop and tears will come to your eyes and you'll wish you were a child again. That song is of course 'You Can Fly', it makes my cry, escpecially what happened to Bobby Driscoll.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Fly!.......2002-10-23

As a lover of Peter Pan, this CD was a wonderful addition to my collection. The songs are just wonderufl, and the instrumental music is great to hear when you've seen the movie, or even when you haven't! For anyone who is still yearning to let out their inner child, this is the CD for you!

      1. The Vagabond King

      Album Description

The 15th century poet Francois Villon, between scrapes with the law in Paris, wrote lyrics both poignant and bawdy. At the end of the 19th century, novelist R.H. Russell sentimentalized his career in a plot that borrowed the king-for-a-day motif, thus allowing Villon to defeat France's enemies and win the hand of an aristocratic lady, all in under 24 hours. Adapted as a play in 1901, by New York writer Justin McCarthy, If I Were King served as a star vehicle for E.H. Southern in a Broadway stage production. In 1923, Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart were at the very start of their careers. They devised a musical version of the McCarthy play for a Manhattan girl's school and then looked for a more prestigious venue for their collaboration. Broadway backers turned down the young artists, but liked their idea, "borrowed" it from Rodgers and Hart and commissioned the more established Rudolf Friml to fashion a professional musical from the plot. Friml's Rose Marie was then enjoying great success in New York. Born in what is today the Czech Republic in 1897, Friml enrolled at age 14 in the Prague Conservatory (which was headed by Dvorak) and completed the six-year course in three years. He toured Europe and the United States as accompanist for violinist Jan Kubelik and made a piano debut in this country onstage at Carnegie Hall in 1904. Walter Damrosch and the New York Symphony premiered his Piano Concerto two seasons later, with the composer at the piano. Friml's true calling was as a composer of songs. In 1912, he was called in by Arthur Hammerstein to complete the music for a new work which Victor Herbert had abandoned, owing to a run-in with a temperamental soprano. The resulting operetta, The Firefly, was his first Broadway success, and would be followed by many others. Friml continued to live in America for much of the 20th century long after his sentimental musical style was considered old fashioned. As late as 1969, he was celebrated by Ogden Nash on the occasion of his 90th birthday in a couplet which ended: "I trust your conclusion and mine are similar: 'Twould be a happier world if it were Frimler."

3 out of 5 stars Could be so much better.......2007-07-04

I love "The Vagabond King", but not this versiom. The problem is the sound level ... I had to keep adjusting it and kept having trouble understanding the words. Is the problem the singers or the technicians? I'm not enough of an expert to say.

4 out of 5 stars It's about time that this was put on CD.......2005-06-13

Of all the famous operettas produced in the 1920's, the one most neglected in recordings has been Rudolf Friml's "The Vagabond King", first produced in 1925. Only now is the complete work, dialogue and all, appearing on CD. For those unfamiliar with the music, the best known songs are "Only a Rose" and the stirring "Song of the Vagabonds", perhaps the most rousing "battle song" ever written for an operetta. The story is almost exactly the same as that of "If I Were King", the fondly remembered 1938 non-musical film which starred Ronald Colman as poet-adventurer-thief Francois Villon, who lived during the fifteenth century. Both film and operetta were based on the 1901 play "If I Were King", by Justin McCarthy.

We get the entire "Vagabond King" on this 2 CD set, which is a real bonus for anyone who wants to hear what a 1920's operetta actually sounded like in its original, unaltered version. But this brings me to the problem. I don't know why the Ohio Light Opera decided to do this on "The Vagabond King", when all of their other recordings (and I have three others) are so sonically excellent, but the volume on this CD has to be really cranked up for the listener to catch everything. The recording equipment for this live performance was apparently placed in such a way that there isn't enough treble, except at certain moments. At other times,as happens in some live recordings, the singers are too far away for the listener to catch all of their dialogue, and this operetta has a better story than most, being a faithful adaptation of a good non-musical play. Fortunately, a booklet with a libretto is included, but it is one thing to read the words and quite another to hear them performed.

The singing, though, is quite good, and excellent for what is supposed to be a semi-professional group. I have no idea if the orchestrations and vocal arrangements used are those that were used in the original 1925 production, but if the Ohio Light Opera followed their usual practice, those are most certainly the original arrangements.

It is a true pity that the company saw fit to revise their recording techniques for this operetta, and that is why I am subtracting one star, when I would have otherwise given it a 5-star rating. Operetta fans have long waited for a complete recording of "The Vagabond King", and since this one is not without merit, I am suggesting that you buy it. But be prepared to be fidgeting with the volume control on your CD player.

And as far as I can tell, the complete score of the show is included here. The previous reviewer may be confusing the additional songs written for the 1930 and the 1956 film versions of "The Vagabond King" with the songs used in the stage version. (The film versions used little of the original music.) Only the songs written for the stage version are used here.

But where are the usual Amazon audio clips?

      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste the money.......2005-04-15

This one is only for completists. The recording level is strangely low, so that only a strong audio system or listening indoors with headphones can give you a strong sound. This is especially problematic since the chorus is incomprehensible. The performers are conservatory types most of whom can't act, which makes it too bad that the producers for some reason record the dialogue along with the score. And -- that dialogue is what makes this a 2-CD set; this is by no means a full rendition of the score. There is clearly a lot of missing dance music and reprises; there is about half as much music as you get in, say, JAY's STUDENT PRINCE double-CD, and much less than on Encores' NEW MOON recording. This recording gives no notion of why THE VAGABOND KING was such a hit in its day, and most buyers will be better off waiting for someone else to really do the score proud.

4 out of 5 stars At last a complete recording of a Friml favorite.......2005-02-26

May the Muse of Operetta shower blessings on the Ohio Light Opera for its seemingly endless stream of recordings of complete operettas, dialogue included (not always a Good Thing), as performed at the College of Wooster. Having enjoyed, some more than others, such rarely heard complete performances of Victor Herbert's "The Red Mill" and "Elaine," Gilbert and Sullivan's "Princess Ida" and "Utopia Ltd.," some Kalaman, some Messager, and so on, I am delighted to report that their latest, Rudolf Friml's "The Vagabond King," is among the best of the lot. It is on a double-CD set from Albany Records (TROY 738-39) and well worth the hearing.

For one thing, the tunes range from truly memorable to at least quite good: "Only a Rose," "Love for Sale," "Sons of Toil and Danger," "Love Me Tonight." The story is actually a pretty good one for an operetta, with just enough seriousness to make you care for these characters. The cast is game, with a virile sounding Francois Villon in Ted Christopher, who can handle both music and dialogue with an Alfred Drake dash.

If Brian Woods' King Louis sounds too much the stock stage villain (an older voice would have helped) without any real menace and if there is no real depth to the female roles, Julie Wright (Katherine) and Sandra Ross (Huguette), the music helps you forget that fact. Conductor Steven Byess does a good job with a small orchestra.

I begin to wonder if a chorus can be trained to sing so that we can actually understand the words without following the full text that is thoughtfully provided in all of these OLO sets. The same goes for sopranos at the higher registers. Granted these are taken from stage performances and not from a recording studio, but a little more attention to consonants within and at the end of words would help immensely.

Nevertheless, a complete recording of this Friml work is certainly a MUST for anyone who loves musical theatre. Ironic footnote: Rodgers & Hart had already adapted a play about Villon and wanted to create a Broadway version. The backers agreed and gave the job to Friml! Such is showbiz.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.
