5 out of 5 stars Real Southern Hip-Hop.......2005-10-09

Way before Ludacris, David Banner, Lil Flip, No Limit Records, Cash Money, & all that other so called Southern Rap was the underground kingz...and to this day they're still the kingz of the Underground and the South. Way ahead of their time and can never be outdone. This record along with "Super Tight" & "Ridin' Dirty" are must haves.....you've been missin' out if ya ain't heard! Smoke Fat, Listen Loud, Peace

4 out of 5 stars Dirty South LEGENDS.......2005-09-24

These boys been doing they thing for what, 15 years now. I didnt know about this album until recently. I was very familiar with Ridin Dirty tho. I thought that that was there first album. Hearing this album that came out 3 years earlier impressed me even more. They laid down the groundwork for Southern hip hop that was based on Blues, Soul, and G Funk. This was back in the early 90's when Southern hip hop and West Coast were basically talking to each other both being heavily influenced off each other. These guys along with 8 ball & MJG, Triple Six, Outkast, Goodie Mobb, and the Geto Boys are the only groups that can be called Dirty South Legends.

4 out of 5 stars good debut from the best rap group of the south.......2005-05-31

Definitely the best rap group in the south (yes I think they're better then the Geto Boyz & Eightball and MJG). Only 11 songs, but most of the songs are long. It's from 1992 and I still rock it in 2005. Guests are on a few songs and each member has a solo or 2. Most of the lyrics are either dirty or about cocaine. It has 2 classics, 2 I skip and 2 are ok. Production is good on most songs and handled by Bernie Bismarck, Pimp C & Bun B on all the tracks. A Must have southern rap album that paved the way for many to come from Texas.

#1 - 8
#2 - 9 (Pimp C f/ D.J. Bird -- about being played -- good beat)
#3 - 8.5 (the song that made a name for them -- about cocaine -- also on Menace II Society)
#4 - 8 (f/ Blue Light -- about cocaine)
#5 - 6 (another one about yae yo)
#6 - 5.5 (slow beat)
#7 - 7.5 (great beat -- Bun B f/ Ininity -- it be better w/o her verses)
#8 - 8 (Pimp C solo)
#9 - 7.5 (dirty song by Pimp C)
#10 - 10 (CLASSIC w/ great beat -- Bun B solo)
#11 - 10 (Classic dirty song w/ great beat by Bun B)
#12 (remix of #1 -- beat is a little worse on this one)

BUN B -- Bernard Freeman -- Port Arthur, TX
PIMP C -- Chad Johnson -- Port Arthur, TX

5 out of 5 stars Tight Shyyyt 4Sho.......2004-12-08

This has 2 be 1 of the tightest Cd's Ugk evva did or will evva do. They helped in opening doors 4 a lot of Texas rappers. If it wasn't 4 Ugk and this cd we would've nevva probably had Dj Screw, Lil Flip, or a lot of other Tx Undeground legends.
This goes back 2 where U can let the Cd flow from the begining 2 the end. Pocket full of Stones a true Hip Hop Classic
Use Me Up & Cramping my Style are a couple of my favorites. But as I said I let this flow from begining 2 end .Every & I mean EVERY TIME!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Keep On Using Me...Until You Use Me Up !!!!.......2003-07-20

UGKýs first album is an undisputed Dirty South classic. This duo, hailing from Texas, was one of the first dirty south groups that were not bass music to put it down (along with Geto Boys & Eightball & MJG). UGKýs debut album is beyond great. The samples used in the songs are not disgraceful and UGK are notorious for sampling on their earlier albums. The rapping, compared to their skills now, is a little lacking but they were in their developmental stages during this album. Still, they drop memorable lines and classic verses all throughout this album. The best songs include but are not limited to ýSomething Goodý, ýUse Me Upý, and ýCramping My Styleý. This album is a must have for all fans of UGK and of Dirty South music. 5 Star classic.

3 out of 5 stars hard to swallow.......2006-06-29

If you are a big fan of Korn, Slipknot and Limp Bizkit, I can guarantee you gonna like this. It's far away from Vanilla's first album Go To The Extreme which is more like Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch. So if you like the old Vanilla your going to be dissapointed. I like this album cause im a fan of Korn and Limp Bizkit. I gave this 3 stars cause the genre is not my favorite style. I like hardrock and metal very much but rapmetal is ok.

5 out of 5 stars V-Ice.......2006-02-26

Basically the shiznits if you like Vanillia Ice if not this cd is not for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not Entirely Good, But Not Entirely Bad Either........2005-02-25

Hard To Swallow marked the return of probably the most parodied, hounded, and maybe even hated musician in America. This release finds Vanilla Ice angrier than ever, so it's fitting that the album falls into the rap/metal genre. Downtuned guitars, screamy vocals, and angry lyrics are the meal of the day in this album, and the results aren't quite as bad as most might think judging only from the artist's name listed on the CD's cover.

Get ready, because over the course of the album's 11 actual songs (2 pointless interludes) you're going to experience a lot of Mr. Ice's rage, which is mostly aimed at his naysayers. A theme which will probably be on your last nerve by the time the disc stops spinning. Though his lyrics are a bit trite at times, I think he proves he's still quite a competent vocalist/rapper as some of his rhymes are quite clever. Not every rhyme is gold, in fact there are quite a few stinker lines looming, but overall he puts up a pretty good performance.

Musically the album is really typical rap/metal fodder. The guitars are tuned low and make a lot of senseless noise during verses with the bass line thumping in the back, and the drums aren't much to write home about. They're just there to maintain the tempo.

I enjoyed the mixing on the album. It's nice to hear something angry that actually sounds angry and ugly. This album doesn't have a lot of polish production-wise and it works into Ice's favor by really helping express the anger he's wanting to convey.

The main problem with this CD is that almost all the songs tend to outstay their welcome. Too many times I found myself enjoying a song, but as songs crept closer and closer to the 5 minute mark (when the song was really finished at 3:30-4:00) started to grate on me. Songs like Scars, ADD, and F*ck Me are prime examples of this and find Ice usually screaming at the end about how bad life has treated him, etc. Or long musical outros that just aren't all that good. I can understand wanting to get that aggression out, but doing it in the lyrics might make it seem a bit less whiney.

In the end, this CD did win me over. It's just a good CD to pop in and chill out with. It's not without faults, but it's not without merit either. If rap/metal is your thing (and it's not mine, imagine that) I'd say give it a fair chance before knocking it just because of the artist.

4 out of 5 stars Vanilla Ice first rock/rap album.......2005-01-05

This CD is awesome! A must buy. Thou Bi-Polar is way better in the rock dept. Still a great CD TOO COLD!

4 out of 5 stars Hard To Swallow? Maybe If You're An Old Fan.......2004-11-05

Just as Aggro-rock was peaking and Nu-metal was beginning, Vanilla Ice decided to jump on the Skater band-wagon and release Hard To Swallow. If you were weened on Korn's first three albums and Limp Bizkit, you'd probably love this. Requesting backup from an "all-star" crew (Jimmy Pop Ali of The Bloodhound Gang, Producer Ross Robinson, Casey Chaos and that year's incarnation of neo-punks Amen, Beck's DJ Swamp, Scott "Brother of Wes" Borland, and a handful of underground rappers) Ice proved he could hold his own with the late 90's metal and alternative crowd even though he was still ignored.
The album opens with "Living", an amped-up version of "The Wrath" from his gangsta rap album "Mindblowin", it's apparent that Mr. Ross Robinson's skill on channeling emotions is hard at work. The album progresses a couple of tracks to the angry "F#!k Me", a proverbial slap in the face about media attention with venomous guest vocals by Amen's Casey Chaos. Two tracks later and you're hit with the album's only single "Too Cold", the infamous metal cover of "Ice, Ice, Baby", complete with Korn-like percussion riffs and an angry Ice spitting lyrics to a song that can now truely can be called his own. No theft of semi-homo opera rockers here. "Prozac" lifts lyrics from his guest spot on Bloodhound Gang's "Boom" and "S.N.A.F.U." actually features Bloodhound Frontman Jimmy Pop Ali returning the favor on a few verses. A few more tracks of sex, drugs,&rap-rock & roll and the album closes with a solid rap track. "Freestyle" features a slew of underground rappers flowin to the beat with raps of bein the toughest and having Ice's back. Ice closes out the song with a barrage towards all the haters who never thought he'd make it out of joke status.
All in all, this album's a well rounded attempt at a come back but musically it's not too original. This is one of those album's where if you liked the alt-metal sounds of the late 90's this should be in your Top Ten.
