Bricks [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Rude, crude, and lewd, the Outsidaz's rhymes on The Bricks should give those who find Eminem unpalatable something to think about. Violence, drugs, armed robbery, sexual depravity, and shooting the president are all topics primed to make their debut album the subject of moral-majority placards. That the East Coast rappers' caricature exploits, bravado, and taunts--aimed at wack rappers, cheating girlfriends, and anyone that's not them--are exaggerated for maximum effect and come with party beats, suggests more bad-boy misbehavior than a corrupting influence. "State to State," for one, with its comedy samba and explicit message to sexually demanding ladies--that the Outsidaz's wouldn't entertain with someone else's barge poll--is pure comedy. And with Kelis & Rah Digga getting their own back on "I'm Leaving," The Bricks isn't all one-sided. They even offer a blunt warning against the evils of drugs on "Rehab," albeit to something approximating a demented Disney ditty. If these redeeming features, plus addictive beats and playful rhymes, aren't enough to convince detractors that the Outsidaz are a valuable addition to society, then the fact that they set up on an ice-cream stand on a corner of their neighborhood known as the Bricks (previously frequented by drug dealers) should hint that they're not all bad. --Dan Gennoe

Somewhat poppier than their previous album, Bricks Are Heavy still features the abrasive guitar riffs and punk inflections that gained L7 their following. "Pretend We're Dead" was the major hit from this album, and is the most commercial song of the lot; songs like "Wargasm", "Everglade", and "Slide" are aggressive, roaring rockers. While "Diet Pill" and "This Ain't Pleasure" emphasize the group's feminist slant, this takes a backseat to their music, which is the main reason to pick up this album. L7 isn't women who play rock and roll; it's a rock and roll band that happens to be made up of women. --Genevieve Williams

The soundtrack to my remaining high school years.......2007-08-01
It is hard to believe that BRICKS ARE HEAVY by the band L7 is fifteen years old. The cd was released in 1992. I was a junior in high school and when I first heard the album, the music was a breathe of fresh air to me. While my peers in high school were listening to hip hop and r&b (which I found to be absolute rubbish and still do to this very day), I had embraced the alternative culture that Nirvana had pushed to the forefront of mainstream music. L7 was my Nirvana especially BRICKS ARE HEAVY.
BRICKS ARE HEAVY is 37 minutes of pure ecstasy for me. The music is both grunge and punk. As aggressive as the music is, every song is riddled with great pop hooks. Songs like "Everyglade" and "Mr.Integrity" are great examples of the band's talent of mixing aggressive music with infectious pop hooks without sounding like the Go Go's (not that there is anything wrong with the Go Go's). My personal anthem for me was "Pretend We're Dead". That song embodied the angst and nihilism of my high school years.
As an adult in her early 30s, BRICKS ARE HEAVY remains as relevant to me as it did fifteen years ago. I still revere this modern rock classic as highly as I did as a teenager. Although I enjoyed the band's follow up albums, none of them really captured the essence of fun and energy of BRICKS ARE HEAVY.
L7 are top of my list!.......2007-06-23
This is by far the best of the female grunge/punk bands. I love songs like "Pretend We're Dead", "Sh** List", "Wargasm", and "Mr. Integrity". I saw them open up for Marilyn Manson during the Antichrist Superstar tour and they were awesome! IMO, this is the best L7 album.
great rock album.......2007-02-04
I always get annoyed when L7 is called a girl-band. You won't hear people call all-male bands boy-bands, so it's logical to stop the girl-band category nonsense (except in the case of riot grrrl/post-riot grrrl bands who wanted/want it that way, for a reason). L7 were simply a band. A rock band. And a damn good one, also. And this album proves how amazing they were. Favorites are Wargasm, Pretend We're Dead, Everglade. And while both equal-quality and inferior male rockers got worldwide fame and acclaim, L7 unfortunately remained under most people's radars, except for a short time after this album came out...All I can say is, those people have no idea what they're missing out on...
Not One Bad Song On This Album.......2006-02-05
Kicking off with the driving riff in "Wargasm", L7 know how to rock. I remember hearing about L7 here and there when i was growing up, but never thought anything more about them. Then i heard that their song "Sh*tlist" was used in Natural Born Killers a few years ago, so i watched it again and thought it sounded really cool..it really fits the movie perfectly. Then, like another reviewer, i heard their song "Pretend We're Dead" (Probably the most 'poppy' song on this album) on the game GTA: San Andreas and thought..enough is enough, i gotta buy an album of theirs and so this is it. And i really can't pick a bad song on this, they're all great. They really do mix rock/grunge/metal/pop in and out of each song.
If you're a fan of any of those genre's, i'm sure you'll love this CD too. Donita Sparks' vocals are great as well, and the riffs just make you want to air-guitar all over the place. My favorite songs are probably "Wargasm", "Pretend We're Dead", the pretty heavy "Diet Pill", "Everglade" and also "Sh*tlist". Very awesome CD, and i really don't think anyone can be disappointed in it.
5/5
Great Album, Not Their Finest........2006-01-04
I am a huge L7 fan, i admit i discovered them recently (actually by playing GTA: San Andreas, in 2004). I own all 6 of their records, i initially thought "Bricks Are Heavy" was their best, but after analyzing all their records, i changed my opinion, i believe "Smell the Magic" and "Hugry For Stink" are better. This record is their best selling and most critically acclaimed, and i agree it's a great record. It was produced by Butch Vig who produced Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Smashing Pumpkins albums and dozens of other records. I felt this album has songs that sound the same, and somewhat boring. "Hungry For Stink" is much more diverse and has better production.

Something of a missing link between Delta and Chicago blues, Robert Nighthawk never garnered as much attention as his followers, who included Earl Hooker and Muddy Waters. That's a shame, partly rectified by this reissue from Delmark Records, though the guitarist's rambling way of life meant that his sessions were few and far between. That makes the material on this collection all the more precious; the tracks on Bricks in My Pillow include some of the best slide guitar ever recorded. Listen to Nighthawk's guitar wailing on "Crying Won't Help You" or" The Moon Is Rising" (two takes, one previously unissued, are included here), coupled with a rich, resonant voice that sounds equally at home on ballads and uptempo rockers. Though Nighthawk's name isn't often uttered in the same sentence as those of other blues greats, it indubitably should be. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Amazing sound, great songs. Why wasn't Nighthawk a star?.......2003-04-15
Well, I suppose to some he was. A star that is. But for some reason, Robert Lee McCullum (AKA "Nighthawk") never made it to the really big leagues. Sure, he didn't have Willie Dixon to supply him with catchy, instantly memorable songs like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf did, but he had the voice and the skill, and his recorded output is generally of very high quality.
Perhaps the main reason is that Nighthawk was a rambler who didn't care all that much about making records. Even so, United Records in Chicago did manage to record him on two occations (July 1951 and October 1952), and the cuts on this fine album were the results. Nighthawk plays some mean slide guitar and even a few single-string leads, and sounds very much like a man who could have given Muddy Waters a run for his money. Great band, too, including a really good piano player.
The sound is amazingly good - full, clear and rich. Highlights include the slow, ominous "Crying Won't Help You", the jazzy "The Moon Is Rising" and "You Missed A Good Man", and the gritty traditional "Bricks In My Pillow", but there are really no weak tracks on this album. Robert Nighthawk's brand of blues is somewhere in between Elmore James and early amplified Muddy Waters, and this CD, along with the fabulous "Live on Maxwell Street", would serve as a fine introduction to this underrated but influential and hugely talented bluesman.
4 1/2 stars. Highly recommended.

Great to have the United and States masters available again [updated, originally reviewed in 1999].......1999-06-08
In a flurry of recent releases a clearer picture of Night Hawk's artistry is emerging (he himself spelled his name as two words). This disc re-releases the recordings made by Night Hawk in 1951 for the United label and in 1952 for its subsidiary, States. It adds two takes that were not on the original LP release of 1977 (Pearl 11). Highlights include "The Moon is Rising" and "Maggie Campbell," which are interesting to hear in different versions here. With this disc, two recent Testament discs that include Night Hawk material ("Down Home Slide" and "Down Home Harp," both of which include performances that are a bit stilted--they were probably bootlegged from the May 1964 blues festival at Mandel Hall at the University of Chicago which had blues artists performing in an auditorium before a polite audience unused to the blues), and, most important, the new "And This Is Maxwell Street" 2CD set from P-Vine in Japan PCD 5527/28 (and let us hope soon on a U.S. label!), we begin to see that Night Hawk was a far more versatile guitarist than many probably have realized. On the "Bricks In My Pillow" release reviewed here, the pace is usually fast. The disc has a rather different feel from the lush but mournful playing we know from Chess recordings such as Anna Lee. Perhaps most interesting of all, however, is the extraordinary range of styles Night Hawk plays on the P-Vine "And This Is Maxwell Street" discs, but perhaps that should not be surprising given Night Hawk's remarks in the interview with Michael Bloomfield that was made in conjuction with the filming of Mike Shea's Maxwell Street documentary "And This is Free." There he mentions that he used to play swing, Spanish numbers, popular numbers.... The P-Vine discs release all of the recordings made for "And This Is Free." It is great to have the United and States masters available again here on this disc. Recommended. Just wish I knew who the drummer in the cover photo was! [Reviewer's update: I have confirmed that the drummer is Jimmy Lee Collins, the same drummer that appears in "And This is Free." "And This is Maxwell Street" was released on Rooster Records (US) and Katfish Records (UK) after this review was written.]
One of the few genuinely perfect records........1998-08-13
Possibly the best example of electrified Delta blues ever to come out of Chicago. Every detail is perfect, from Nighthawk's liquid extrapolations on themes established by Tampa Red and others, to Jump Jackson's swinging hi-hat, to Ransom Knowling's astounding slapped upright bass. The songs, too, are every bit as good as the performances. Do yourself a favor and own this record.

Aldo's Best.......2006-03-03
This was Aldo Nova's best release with at least 5 songs that should have been singles. The record company really dropped the ball on this one. Buy this long out-of-print cd before it disappears again forever!
BRIGHT LIGHTS BECKON AGAIN?.......2005-01-25
The most accessible Aldo Nova release came at the dawn of the ninties. Assisted by his friendship with Jon Bon Jovi in production and songwriting the only downside could be that this is very much like a Bon Jovi album. It is a small consideration because the album is so good it becomes a mute point. But trust me you do think it when you first hear it. I believe Nova and Bon Jovi had written together for the "Young Guns II" CD and this may be the continued efforts of those sessions. Certainly the music does all the talking with the Sweet-like title track (complete with Ballroom Blitz style mid vocal section) and early highlight "Medicine Man" which is very atmospheric with a hypnotic Indian chant aspect. "Bang Bang" is a little annoying and does indeed sound like a "New Jersey" cast off. The Nova of the "Twitch" era returns in "Someday" which is a triumph down to its heart felt words and their heart felt delivery, a big power pop ballad. "Young Love" is street poetry in the Jovi-esque "Livin On A prayer" Westside Story kind of way. It's hard not too like. "Modern World" talks about the many things not to like about modern life in America and is the deepest thing lyrically on offer complete with it's anger. "This Ain't Love" is the least successful outing on this release trying a little too hard to be late eighties hair rock that had already fallen from grace. "Hey Ronnie" is another love on the roof tops ditty and although it is pure schmaltz you can't help but fall in love with it and surely must be another highlight. "Touch of Madness" and "Brightlights" close things out with the closing cut being the best of the two ending things in similar style to how it all began at track one, a guitar workout. A very good release and certainly recommended for Aldo and Bon Jovi fans alike. All but forgotten by the rush towards the doom and gloom of grunge. Buy it to play whilst driving at fast speeds in the car and too remind you that music can be fun.

HOLY CRAP!.......2006-03-02
Have you ever heard such a unique and heavy sound coming from 2 guys? ME NEITHER!!! This is amazing. BFS captured my heart after the first bass drum hit in "You've Got to be kidding me." Their lyrics deal with fake people, dumb ass parents not taking care of their kids...I mean, there are 2 OTHER tracks on here, SEGUE and END transmission which are NOT HEAVY, but yet, beautiful, like as if they were all of a sudden Indie....For fans of HUM, Far, Helmet, Failure...wow, you will love this! As a matter of fact, I recommend this to everyone!!!

blew me away.......2004-11-30
I just picked this up from the bargain bin in the local music store after hearing that ANova was a metal guitarist. This is the best Bon Jovi album and Bon Jovi (the band) doesn't even play here!
I can't believe this CD wasn't well publicized, it must be one of the best 80's melodic releases I have ever heard. Up there with Giant as best undiscovered rock gems!
THIS IS IN MY TOP 10 FAVORITE ALBUMS!!!!.......2004-05-19
I have a brother who DJ's and we search diligently for old 80's to 90's Glam Rock that went un-noticed from radio. When I stumbled onto "Blood on the Bricks" I jammed to it in my car for at least a month. That was 5 years ago.
I wasn't big into Aldo Nova even when he hit big back in the eighties, with "Monkey on your back". I was more into Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Krokus, and Bon Jovi. Now that I've got his self titled, Twisted, and Portrait albums I'd have to say I'm blown away that I held a deaf ear to his music for so long. This is one of the best, and well manicured albums I've ever listened to. If you are into the lost sound of the Glam / Melodic Rock of the eighties and early 90's this is a must have. I own two of these cd's(not burned) one for the car and one for the house. As I stated in the title to my review this album Rocks. Not a bad track on the whole CD.
Aldo Nova even showed America he can still crank out awesome hits. "This is the night" sang by Clay Aiken was a recent tune Aldo was involved on, and that was the biggest selling single for 2003. It'd be great to hear him crank out another cd in the future.
Deserves more..........2004-04-24
This CD deserves more..Aldo Nova deserves more..more credit, more respect both as a musician and a singer.
This is a great rock CD. The Bon Jovi influence is unmistakable. Which gives this CD a Bon Jovi meets Loverboy feel. You won't find any long jams or lightning fast finger, screeching guitar work, but what you do find is 10 rock solid songs. There is not a dud in lot. Although there is not a huge song like "Fantasy", from his debut, each song can stand on it's own and could have been released as a single, there are no filler songs here. Put them all together in one CD and you have a great "pop metal" rocker. Personally, the song "Hey Ronnie" is a standout for me.
You just can't go wrong with this one. If you liked Aldo Nova's debut, then I guarantee that you will love this one. Even if you have never heard Aldo Nova before, this CD deserves a listen.
Rock on.

Saw them live in 2000!.......2006-04-18
I was at the Method Man/Redman Blackout tour in 2000 where I went to Seatlle and was really impressed with the opening act, The Outsidaz. It was today that I was looking at the tickets thinking how cool the opening act was. In my efforts to find some of their material I was baffled. What DID I like about the Outsidaz?? There was enough marajuana smoke going around the Paramount that night, that a microphone hitting the ground would sound tight. Meth and Red had the place jumping I mean people were having a good time, we were waiting for the headline act! But listening to the albums of The Outsidaz I cant remember what I liked about them. The show was tight but the albums didnt have the luster their stage performance had. Shouldnt the stuido work over shadow a live show?? Most artists performing live forget words, are lazy on stage but not Meth and Red and not The Outsidaz. So the question I'm asking is, what do these reviewers like about this New Jersey group?? Is my problem that I live on the West Coast and Im too familiar with artists like 2Pac, Dogg Pound, Warren G & Dr.Dre? I like alot of East Coast rap, but Im definately not feeling the Outsidaz anymore!

Tight debut.......2001-08-20
This album is pretty tight. Flow wise I'd say Pace and Nawshis are the tightest, though Zee is awesome too. The highlights on this CD are: "*Keep On*," "*Who You Be*," "*The Bricks*," "Money, Money, Money RMX," and "Im Leaving." "Hell Yeah," and "We be the O's" are aight, but not quite as good. I recommend this to any gangsta rap fan. peace.

The Bricks.......2001-06-06
Yo,the outsidaz has been a hot group for a while and I seen them with Red, Meth, Ghost, CAPP and Streetlife at Illinois State Campus, I knew they have skills and they are from the BRICKS, so what more could you expect. This is New Jers,This album is hot from start to finish. This long awaited underground group from the bricks, who has appeared on the Blackout album and college tour, Rah Digga's album and who Eminem give shouts to on his albums. Yo this is the O.U.T.Z. baby, recognize Nightlife as a good EP but the album is far better. The production and beats are extraordinary on this album. They kick it off with Sign Of Power where Young Zee,Pacewon and the rest of OUTZ kick the flow with a nice smooth beat. Their best tracks is O.U.T.Z.(Track 17),Done In the Game (Track 4),Keep On (track 3),Get*** (Track 6), Hell Yeah (track 7). Listen, the whole album is great for the Underground and New Jers. once you listen to this hip hop lingo. They give you fools smooth what ya'll asking for, They be the O's and they are hot to def. Go cop this album . .... Go get this album. Peace. One.
