Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a good album .......2007-01-03

I have this on vinyl and to this day it is one of my favorite records. I cant belive how much people want for the CD it is crazy the prices some people are charging for some of these cds. This is when Ak was at his finest and AK HA HA is crazy esp with Rob Swift cutting it up and the Bomb also this is a album that everyone should have and listen to. i can say there is no put it in your mouth type of stuff on here its all real hip hop. I am looking to Akinyele putting out a new cd this year and hope it goes back to his stuff like he did on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Consistent and entertaining.......2006-12-03

Akinyele was fresh off Main Source's classic posse cut "Live at the Barbeque" when he dropped his debut on the world, 1993's "Vagina Diner." Ak would later become sex-obsessed, and while the title may suggest otherwise, he's not on this album. On his debut, Ak is a hungry, punchline-spitting MC who uses funny metaphors and is often hilarious. His flow is very unique, he has a funny habit of sometimes bellowing the last word of a line in a deep voice. His subject matter is almost always humorous, he sounds very realistic but quite amusing. The production is consistently outstanding, as this is the only album produced in its entirety by the legendary Large Professor, one of the east coast's greatest producers of all time. He uses a very focused sound here, making fast, bass and horn heavy beats with less samples than usual. "Vagina Diner" is light, humorous, and catchy hip hop that is really enjoyable, and highly recommended.

The album begins with "Worldwide," a punchine-fest and great production by LP, with a tasteful sax and good chorus. "Outta State" speaks of heading across borders "to make papes outta state." "Ak Ha Ha" is a definite highlight, where Ak introduces his crazy character over another nice beat. "Dear Diary" disses suckers over a funky basssline. "Bags Packed" disses a woman who won't pay her rent, Ak basically is kicking her out of the house. It's humorous and it has a good vocal sample in the chorus. "The Bomb" is my favorite track here, the best beat with a soaring trumpet part and head-nodding bass and drumline. Ak just lets loose and rips over the beat like only he can. On "I Luh Her," Ak mourns his situation of having no money and a pregnant girlfriend. "Exercixe" is absolutely hysterical, he devotes a whole song to talking about how much he hates exercising and playing sports. "No Exit" and "30 Days" are perfect endings to the album, two exercises in funky production by LP and humorous lyricism by the Ak.

"Vagina Diner" is light and humorous, and has not a lot of deep subject matter or rap philosophy. He is neither menacing nor tough, just funny and entertaining. The whole album is well produced and musical, and overall the album is consistent and pleasing. It's really hard to find today, but fans of the early 90s east coast sound will love this album, and I recommend it highly to those types of listeners.

5 out of 5 stars It's the Ak ha ha........2005-08-21

Alongside the Wu debut, "midnight marauders" by Tribe, "intoxicated demons" ep by Beatnuts and "enta da stage" by Black Moon this still stands as the cream of the Noo Yawk rap crop of 1993 and one of the best examples of 90s NYC boom-bap, period.

Although Akinyele was oushined by Nas' debut verse on Main Source's "live at the bar b q" in 1991 he still impressed enough to have us fiending for this, his ludicrously titled debut album, a year or two later. Produced entirely by Large Professor it gave the producer dubbed the live guy with glasses a chance to expand on his more layered and dense productions previously documented on Kool G. Rap's "wanted : dead or alive" album (plus the stunning, almost Bomb Squad-ish "wanted : dead or alive" remix) and Eric B. & Rakim's "don't sweat the technique" album letting his peers like D.J Premier, Pete Rock, Q Tip, the DITC camp, the emerging RZA et al know that he meant business.

It's an unpopular opinion but, production wise, i think this is the best album Large Professor has been heavily involved in. Not to dicscredit "breaking atoms" by Main Source but this is just more complete, has a better flow and contains my favorite Xtra P beat in the hypnotic groove of "outta state". In fact, the standard of production is so high that some of the interlude beats on here are better than the best beats on other rappers from the same era's albums.

Rap puritans will tell you that Akinyele isn't a very good rapper, that all he raps about is sex and that these beats should've been given to Large Pro's other protege Nas instead. Ignore them as they're glib observations from the type of person whose Jansport straps and cargo shorts have usually cut off the blood supply to their sense of humor. The Ak' ha ha is a more playful Kool G. Rap with the jocularity of Grand Puba and there are a myriad of moments on here that will have you rewinding like "damn, did he really just say THAT..?" which, ultimately, is what rapping is all about, isn't it..?

Overall, it's a very solid release and the somewhat eccentric wise-cracking rhymes aren't overshadowed by the Stax soul and Blue Note jazz sampling production or vice-versa. With no real weak links it bumps throughout but "outta state", "exercise", "i luh lur", "the bomb", "checkmate" and "ak ha ha" are the standout tracks. Be warned, though : Ak still did his raspy growl gimmick at the end of some of his verses on here which, i'll concede, is an acquired taste and "i huh lur", where Ak' lets us know how he really feels when his girl lets him know she's expecting his child, is one of the most unpleasant rap songs you'll ever hear. But, beyond the black-comedy and casual disregard for human life, it's also a profound comment on human psychology and the contradictory impulses we all feel.

The Best from AK-NEL!!! Hard/Rugged flow with strong punchlines. Solid production with the help from LARGE PRO'. You won't find a better listen than this. Add it to your collection.
