His inexplicable top-tier popularity notwithstanding, Ja Rule has developed into something of an oddity among today's pack of commercial rappers. Murder Inc.'s eager young cash cow is an MC whose ability to sound like 2Pac conflicts with his urge to sing like Donny Hathaway, and these two seemingly disparate influences firmly butt heads. Songs like the Ashanti-accented "Mesmerize" and the downtempo "Rock Star" showcase Ja's wobbly baritone croon, while "Thug Lovin'" (featuring the authentic thug crooner, Bobby Brown) and "Murder Me" display his patented hip-hop growl. In keeping with Murder Inc.'s domination of mainstream airwaves, the vibe here is strictly midtempo R&B, aside from the exceedingly shrill synth-and-drum-machine styling of the Neptunes-laced "Pop N****s" and the prefab grimness that permeates "The Warning." Young'uns mightn't notice, but the samples utilized on The Last Temptation, including Toto's "Africa" (on "Murder Reigns") and "Funky Sensation" (on the title track), are extremely unsubtle. Those who were raised on foundation hip-hop might do better to look elsewhere. --Rebecca Levine

To call Peter Gabriel's Passion a pivotal recording in the development of the world music genre would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so undeniably huge is, of course, its global reach but also its expert handling of what could've easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Mal bring strong Middle Eastern and African voicing to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. To be certain, the intertwined rhythms stand out but always do so both unto themselves and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a stellar musical achievement by any standard. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Timeless Soundtrack.......2007-07-17

I was a Peter Gabriel fan for years prior to the release of "Passion," but the arrival of this epic soundtrack was as close to a religious experience for me as an album can get. For years now, it has been the background to many of the most powerful and emotional moments in my memory. THE BEST music for... well, anything intimate or intense. For zoning out and letting your mind fly where it will. For curling up in a ball in the corner and allowing the music to give voice to your own pain and resurrection.

My five year old loves "Passion." I love how he hears something arresting in the middle of a track and will say "Oooh, mommy! Go back, go back quickly! Did you hear that?" His face just gets so thoughtful, and you can see the emotions of the music play over his face. It brings me such joy that we share this together. Thanks again, Peter Gabriel!

5 out of 5 stars Changed my musical tastes forever.......2007-05-14

This album is really as good as everyone says. For those who are religiously inclined you may even feel God while listening to it. Believe me. Peter Gabriel had to have been inspired by a higher power while making it, bringing together a collection of music backgrounds as never done before, a musical 'patron saint'. In the process he has no doubt made the world a better place, by allowing dissimilar cultures to come together and share a common musical bond. To call it his Opus is a woeful understatement. In a hundred years this album will still be remembered as a defining achievement in music. If only we could bring the world together so well and so often, through music. This was my first foray into world music when I bought this in 1989 while in college. It was my first ever CD and I still have it today. Without a doubt it changed my tastes in music forever. I'm still dumbfounded why this man has not been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

5 out of 5 stars Passion For The Passion.......2007-04-15

I often find "World Music" dreary when kept in its glass case. It becomes a preservation activity: record X from Y before He/She dies and their Music Is Lost Forever. Whilst this is worthy, it isn't necessarily worthwhile listening to something recorded only because it is going to rust away otherwise.
With "Passion" (the soundtrack to Scorcese's "The Last Temptation Of Christ"), Peter Gabriel succeeds brilliantly in creating a work indebted to World Musicians and yet stamped with his own mark: therefore the album lives and breathes as a work in its own right rather than a fossil of the past or a foreign country. He achieves this by using a strongly north African rhythmical approach coupled with the work of musicians on traditional Middle Eastern string instruments, always focusing on structure to build elements of texture into (rather than onto) each track. Exceptions to this are the stately choral version of "With This Love" and the soaring Western/Middle Eastern hybrid "It Is Accomplished".
With "Passion", Gabriel achieved the difficult task of giving voice to ancient music rather than reverentially keeping it in a case, to be merely caged and catalogued.

5 out of 5 stars Superior to The Passion of the Christ soundtrack .......2007-02-16

I recently purchased both The Passion of the Christ soundtrack and Peter Gabriel's Passion. I really wanted to like The Passion of the Christ score, as I loved the movie. Regrettably, John Debney's music is so much like Peter Gabriel's superb Passion soundtrack, used in 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ that it becomes a farce. It even uses Gabriel's long-time collaborator, vocalist and double violinist Shankar, whose unique sound was also used on Gabriel's Passion. The producers also used a piece from Gabriel's Rabbit Proof Fence soundtrack for The Passion's 2003 teaser trailer. There's no doubt that Debney has copied Gabriel. Also the highlight of The Passion of the Christ is a theme virtually identical to one from John William's Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack.

So buy Gabriel's Passion over The Passion of the Christ, it is a magnificent score and far more original.

5 out of 5 stars An Antti Keisala Comment: Also They Saw God.......2007-02-05

I have started this voyage of commentary by picking up the ones that are close to my heart, but now we're really arriving to the true centre. This album is perhaps the quintenessential album in my short life, the soundtrack of my life, only perhaps a few other albums (namely from Rubinstein or Pärt) slightly echoing the massive impressions it continually paints. As a Gabriel fan in general I still feel this is his best work, the most intimate testament to his skill not only as a musician, but also as a poet.

I don't like the Scorsese film for cinematic reasons alone, and the tapestries of sound drown the images of the film so thoroughly that what breathes through is the visual aspect of Gabriel's music instead of Scorsese's 'images'. And I have seen the film more than a few times (and am still waiting for the likes of Greenaway, Medem and Malick) to change the way we think of the subject cinematically. But how could I ever feel sad that I couldn't make myself like the film, when what it brought to me was an album like this?

Through the perspective of music history and especially through the evolution and migration of world music to the Western world this is already a significant album in itself. So it has merits. But what it has is the original spirit, the passion in the other sense of the word, to create, to express. And it has personal risk written all over it, made by an artist at the peak of his popularity and then taking the chance and making a small record like this. Once again something that I would already applaud for itself alone. This is passion for music, for the urge to create.

One wonderful property of great art is that it takes us along to participate in the creative process, paints an image of it and folds us around it as it encompasses our own space. "The Feeling Begins" and "A Different Drum" remain as the penultimate spiritual chants only succeeded by Gabriel's "Cloudless" in echoing the flowing rhythm of a ritual invocation, reaching from some artificially distant place inside our soul into our soul in this time and place. There is illusion, there is enchantment, there is magic, there is power, there are miracles. And it still, to this day, makes me believe. Not only is this the soundtrack of a whole life, it is, ironically, the soundtrack, a backdrop of inspiration, to any ideal full reading of the Gospels or Psalms I do. Uplifting, life-altering, everything that's from and in between. And I think of Whitmanian ease of being, as he whispers in 'Song of Myself': "Swiftly arose and spread around me the peace and knowledge/that pass all the argument of the earth,/And I know that the hand of God is the promise of my own,/And I know that the spirit of God is the brother of my own'. These kind of albums to which you can invest your own soul aren't experiences for experiences' sake, but things to cherish life for.

And I am thankful.

With best regards,
AK

4 out of 5 stars I also consider this one of his best!.......2007-08-01

I was having an "Alice Cooper" conversation yesterday, the person claimed to be a fan but had never heard of this album. So I decided to post a review for others who may be unaware of its existence. But, considering the number of reviews...I guess that's not that much of a problem!!

This is my personal favorite Cooper album and is also the closest thing to Prog-Rock he has (admittedly I haven't heard everything). It is quite an interesting album, being based upon a story jointly written by Alice and Sandman/Stardust/American Gods author Neil Gaimen (also get the 3-issue comic series if you can).

There's not a bad song on the thing but "Bad Place Alone", "You're My Temptation" and "Unholy War" stand out and my personal favorite is the final track "Cleansed by Fire".

There are several "guests" - Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades and Soundgarden's Chris Cornell who sings on "Stolen Prayer" and "Unholy War", co-wrote the former and wrote the latter. And the keyboardist is Derek Sherinian, Dream Theater's keysman in the late 90s.

If you like Alice Cooper, like prog-rock or just like good Rock n' Roll in general - get this! Get this ASAP!!

3 out of 5 stars What's it missing?.......2007-07-29

As a long time/lifetime Cooper fan,I'll be the first to ache when I don't like a Cooper cd.This cd,in concept is great, however, the Cooper punch is not there.I particularly don't like the special guest bit.Alice has always been better with a stable band..ie..1969-1974,Wagner,Hunter,Ryan Roxie,Eric Singer and currently (2007).The stability makes it all better.

That aside,I feel that the theme is "unconventional" for Alice.Although he tries to involve Alice as the villain,it's just not as good as before.
It's too sugar coated.I know that all types of moral issues were going on with Alice himself that the themes tried to go along with his personal beliefs.

The songs are not as good either, besides the fact that this cd took forever to come out,I expected something better. In conclusion, when you strip away all the comic books and storyline and makeup and shock,Alice is all about the music and the music suffers greatly. This cd is one of my least fav's next to Muscle of Love. There was a spark missing, something that was strong in "Hey Stoopid" and was re-ignited in "Brutal Planet".

5 out of 5 stars A Haunting, Telling Journey.......2007-04-05

This is my fave Alice album. And that's saying something, since I can't get enough of any of his albums (except Constrictor.)
I find the storytelling here much like the late Gabriel-led Genesis (i.e. Foxtrot). It takes the listener on an eerie, ethereal journey which turns Steven's life into a nightmarish carousel of doom. The story is hard to decipher, but the themes are huge and carry the impact of the album. All the songs are different styles of hard rock, except for the exceptional ballad "It's Me." These aren't just any hard rock songs, though - AC as usual redefines the rules of crafting a great hard rock songs, and comes up with some of the catchiest rock melodies of the 90s. The album is definitely an "experience" album; it has the greatest effect on you when you listen to it all at once. The first time I heard it, it took my breath away; every song besides Nothing's Free and Unholy War are rock masterpieces in themselves!
Cooper clearly poured all of his 90s effort and creativity into this adreniline-pumping start to his morality trilogy, and it succeeds completely. Buy it now!
My only problem with it is the cover; I find it lacking for a cooper album. Sure, it's psychotic, but I wish they would have captured all of Cooper's evilness like usual. :D

3 out of 5 stars Stopgap release.......2007-03-17

Cooper her indulges himself with a semi-concept album that addresses a number of social issues, largely about teenage angst and feelings of needing to belong. All of which have been very fertile fields for hard rock and metal for many moons. However there is not the feeling of any sort of sell out such as was visible on Trash, for instance. Not that this prevented his older fans ignoring this release in droves, meaning that his live disc from '97 (A Fistful of Alice) contains just one song from this album only a few years after this was put out. Which shows that not even the mighty Alice can drag his fans into the present, they vastly prefer to hear the standards of their youth repeated ad nauseum.

Points regarding this mid 90's release from the shock/hard rocker would include;

A) Though this is a concept album you don't really need to bother with the storyline to enjoy the tunes. Which is a huge plus with concept albums. And the music is pretty tight, Alice having left far behind most of his shambolic tendencies for more straightforward hard rock with a vaudevillian sheen.

B) The release originally came with a comic book, part 1 of a set of three which were written by Neil Gaiman based on a concept developed by him and Alice. Which screams of a 70's style cheesy gimmick worthy of KISS but since comics are huge business around the world it's perhaps surprising more bands don't try similar tie-ins. It's certainly different.

C) Alice is in fine voice here, well for him that's a relative term but thus far the ravages of time have left his voice alone. Or is even time afraid of Alice?

D) While a number of songs aren't too bad, they do mostly scoot by the listener without leaving any impression at all. Which is pretty damning when you consider that dull is something very rarely associated with the worlds most notorious shock rocker. This chorus' aren't memorable and apart from Lost in America few tunes demand extra plays. It all leaves the listener underwhelmed and perhaps makes this album the most anonymous of the Coops albums since his early 80's daze.

5 out of 5 stars Underated Gem.......2006-12-15

Now this is more like it. Kane Roberts and Kip Winger are out of the picture as Cooper works with a new band that includes "Derrick Sherinian" of Dream Theater fame. "The Last Temptation" is the first of a trilogy of three Christian oriented works that serve as mini morality plays that deal with temptation and redemption. Cooper has always used collaborators when writing his material and on this disc he brings in Tommy Shaw (Styx), Jack Blades (Nightranger, Damn Yankees), and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave). The results are Alice's best album in almost two decades. The album is a concept piece that basically deals with the main character being tempted by the devil (disguised as a circus barker). There is a comic book that accompanies the album telling the story. I have not read the comic so I don't know the story in detail, but musically it works like a charm. The music on the album moves away from the hair metal sound of his last 4 releases and instead turns back to a sound similar to his classic 70's sound, although it still sounds modern and fresh. The single "Lost In America" got some airplay and is still a staple of Cooper's live shows. The song showcases Cooper's sense of humor, something that had been missing for a while. Pretty much every song on the disc is good; "Sideshow", "Nothing's Free", "Bad Place Alone", "It's Me" and the closer "Cleansed By Fire" are all winners. Another highlight is "Stolen Prayer", where Cooper shares vocals with Chris Cornell for a killer performance from both. "Last Temptation" is probably Coopers most underrated album and in my opinion is a must have for his fans.

5 out of 5 stars a unique industrial album with hints of comedy.......2004-03-08

Lard is a group I recently began listening to. In 1990, they were at the top of their game with The Last Temptation of Reid. To most fans of more pop-friendly metal in the late 80's / early 90's, the sound of the singer's voice will make one imagine of an angier Ace Frehley (from Kiss) meeting up with Motley Crue. Forkboy and Pineapple Head are pieces of hard thrashing metal. "Drug Raid at 4am" is the best example of the shocking and humorus mixtures. My personal favorite is the driving "war pimp renaissance". Jeff Ward from NIN provided the perfect beats for the album too.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars, actually..........2003-08-27

this is DEFINITELY the single best lard release you can get your hands on. it's also some of jello's best work. you might recognise "forkboy" from the jail riot scene in natural born killers, and while that is an adrenaline junky's wet dream, there are also a ton of other equally great tracks on here! if you like jello, GET IT! if you like '88-'90 ministry stuff, GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars The best one.........2002-06-20

If you're going to buy, steal, or a swap your sweater collection for a Lard album, this is the one to get. The first album, The Power of Lard, hinted at the band's potential. This album realizes it with brilliant lyrics and music. Where the first EP was almost novelty in its approach, The Last Temptation of Reid is a real album and is more focused and gratifying. One senses that at the time of the recording, the members felt more comfortable with each other, and not surprisingly, more ambitious. I've been listening to it since it came out and I still love it. And for Biafra fanatics, Bozo the Skeleton is one of the very few personal lyrics Biafra ever used.

All the songs on here are great. I Am the Clock is truly strange and is more akin to Time to Melt than anything on this album.

In the early 90's Jello Biafra could do no wrong musically. After the Dead Kennedy's, he broke off into side-projects and produced brilliant collaberation albums with both DOA and NoMeansNo, respectively. (East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, and DH Peligro couldn't come up anything nearly as brilliant as Jello's works--one has to only look at their post-DK output. That's why they're reprocessing DK stuff.)

Fans of this album might also checkout the Jello releases with DOA and NoMeansNo, as well as, Ministry's collaberation with Ian Mackaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat), called Pailhead.

5 out of 5 stars Wilma! Where's the pliers!.......2001-06-13

Jello Biafra and Al Jourgensen have both created so many worthwhile musical projects. Biafra fronted the Dead Kennedys, perhaps the most influential US punk band of all time, and has involved himself with a number of other musical and non-musical projects. Jourgensen is the twisted genius behind Ministry, Revolting Cocks, 1000 Homo DJs and who knows what else. With such a record behind them, it made perfect sense for the two to combine, as they do flawlessly here.

This album just reels off one great song after another. Forkboy, Pineapple Face, Bozo Skeleton, Mate, Spawn & Die all motor along in a straightforward thrash fashion. They're Coming To Take Me Away bounces along cheerfully, as an ode to the brighter side of mental illness, only to be ground into the dirt by the relentless plodding of I Am Your Clock.

As ever with Jello Biafra, there is a dark lyrical bent throughout the album. Drug Raid at 4am covers the lack of respect shown for innocent people in the war on drugs. My favourite song, Can God Fill Teeth? takes a humorous swipe at conspiracy theorists and Big Brother. The music backs off enough to let Jello flow on one of his legendary rants, about everything and nothing, before kicking into a manic electric drill frenzy. I Am Your Clock is another Big Brother song, this time analysing modern society and it's controls on the common man.

Only Jello Biafra could have written a song like Sylvestre Matuschka, a true story of a psychopath who gained sexual gratification from blowing up trains.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this album is that it is over a decade old, but still sounds fresh.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting stuff..........2001-05-30

The first time I ever heard that the word 'Lard' was actually a band was when I was listening to the Wesley Willis song titled 'Jello Biafra' in which good 'ole Wesley says "You are a good punk rocker, you used to be the leader singer of the Dead Kennedys, now you sing for the band Lard." At the time, I was a hardcore DK fan (as I still am, they are my favorite band). After purchancing all the DK albums and listening to each one a great many times, I became thirsty for more. So I decided it wouldn't hurt to check out Lard, Biafra's new band (OK, not new, but new to me). I searched for 'Drug Raid at 4 a.m.' by Lard on LimeWire one day, and a few results popped up. I downloaded one. At first, I admit, I didn't like it none too much. But myself being a true Biafra fan I had to give him more of a chance. I then proceeded to download Bozo Skeleton and Forkboy. They were both good, but as I listened to those two more, I seemed to like Drug Raid at 4 a.m. more and more.

And what did I think then? I liked it. So after picking up Great Rock'N'Roll Swindle in my local record store, I placed an order for Lard's "The Last Temptation of Reid." It took over a month to get it, but it was worth the wait... Immediately I put the CD in my discman and played track 4, Drug Raid at 4 a.m., then I skipped back to track 1 and listened to it all the way through. I really, really liked it. It's sort of industrial/punk... very interesting music. I really like it. My favorite track now is Mate Spawn & Die... you just gotta love the ending. :)

As for the fact that there are Ministry memebers in Lard... I can't say this is any better or worse then Ministry due to the fact that I've never heard their music before. However, if it's anything like Lard... I like it.

Lard would be nothing without the manical genius of Jello Biafra. His wacked-out voice is what makes Lard - and the Dead Kennedys, much more then just any other band. I salute you, Mr. Biafra

I can't believe we have to put up with rubbish like this pulloting rap. Ja Rule and his buddies Nelly, Chingy etc are killing it! Ja Rule is nothing but a black Justin Timberlake and a Tupac wannabe. He thinks Pac would role with him, that's a laugh. Ja, if Pac was still here you'd be in KFC. And so would your friends. Then people actually believe this guy when he talks about being gangsta and s***. He's fake, people are gonna realize this. Then 50 Cent is a better rapper than you are so stop thinking you can diss him. If your a Ja Rule fan than your a certified retard.

1 out of 5 stars 50 cent and ja rule need to be deported from the planet.......2006-06-09

Why do you all still support this clown? Ja rule hasn't been hot since his first album. Then he let a clown just as wack as him crush his career. Ja rule is as commercial as they come and his lyrics display that. He is all about the money and not about making good music. This is a very poor release. It is just as wack as dem franchise boys and d4L. Jefferey needs to stop rapping and go rob a bank like steady b.

2 out of 5 stars Even Blood In My friggin' Eye was better than this.......2005-12-04

This was the record where it was the most obvious that Ja had officially turned soft, and he only followed this one up with another bad record claiming he was hard. Don't get me wrong, i'm a huge Ja Rule fan, but even i have to admit, this was the start of the dark days. I got this album, really hoping that it was better than the average "Pain Is Love", and after hearing "Thug Lovin'" i had reason to believe it was, but unfortunately i was mistaken, and had to endure, a Ja Rule gone-soft pop album.

Track for track

"Intro" promising start, saying that he doesn't have to spit sh*t at these clowns (shady/aftermath/g-unit i presume) and that how he's gonna continue making hits, using that "Murder Inc." sound.

"Thug Lovin'" One for the ages awesome RNB hit, with Bobby Brown singing a memorable chorus, and Ja spitting 3 tight verses. A sort of light song, good way to end an album, rather than start it, but i'm not complaining, this is one hell of a song.

"Mesmirize" This was the song where everyone realized that Ja infact had gone soft, i really hate this song, mainly cuz of the stupid chorus, and the dumb video. Ja sucks on the verses, and Ashanti is just so annoying. Although this might have been his biggest hit commercially, for me as a Ja fan, this was his worst work ever...

"Pop N****as" very poor song, going from a pop song, to a hard attempted thugged out song, saying he pops ni**as , real forgettable song, and terrible lyrics

"The Pledge Remix" good song, only cause of Ja's verse, Nas is hardly impressive on this song,Ashanti's vocals are quite good on this one, I wish 2Pac would actually rap on this one, it would make the song so much more memorable.

"Murder Reigns" sort of a lighter laid back song, the music in the background is pitiful though, and so is the chorus, sung by an unidentified female, who sings: I think the reign is calling murder, over and over again which gets real annoying, Ja's outstanding on this one though, it's good rap but really nothing else...

"The Last Temptation" 70's background music, sort of like disco, and really pointless rhyming on this one, not nescessarily bad rhyming, but just pointless, Charli Baltimore and Ja Rule, the entire song are just saying how much they are in the club and how rich they are, boring song...

"Murder Me" Terrible crappy a$$ pop sh*t, here i am thinking cuz of the title, it will be a thugged out gangsta song, but here i am listening to this crap, and all i here is Ja and Tah boasting about there sex game, god listening to this sh*t from ur fav artist, is like watching someone have sex with your wife, i think this is the worst Ja Rule song i have ever heard

"The Warning" From one of Ja's worst songs, to one of his best songs, really awesome one about how he is an underdog, and everyone wants him dead, he's saying F**k you to all the haters, and saying they never lived the thugged out life that he claims he did. Awesome song.

"Connected" Pretty good song, the Eastwood guy sucks, but Crooked I is good, and Ja's verse is good, in this song they're all saying how you shouldn't f*ck around with Murder Inc. Ja takes shots and DMX and 50 Cent in this one.

"Emerica" stupid song, guest appearences suck, and so does the background music, and the lyrics. VERY skippable

"Rock Star" really can't see how i like this song, it has such a cheesey chorus, and here is Ja saying he's a rock star, when he doesn't even play rock. I guess i like it for the beat, but that's it, nothing else about this song is good...

"Destiny" sort of short but i'll take it. It's a good song with good lyrics, nice way to end a friggin' terrible album...

Ok, I really contradicted myself, in my lsat review for Blood In My Eye, when i said that that album was the worst of his career, I had obviously forgot about this peace of trash. I just hate it when Ja does sh*t for attention, he's my favorite artist and hearing him make absolute trash music just hurts so bad. Him doing all this "i'm a thug" sh*t is just for attention, and all this pop sh*t with female artists is eally all for attention, it get's quite annoying. I'm glad that he turned this downhill trend around with the release of R.U.L.E., and hopes he continues to make good music. Want good Ja music, cop R.U.L.E., Venni Vetti Vicci, and Rule 3:36, even Pain Is Love isn't that bad.

Check my reviews on Mike Jones' album and Blood In My Eye, and R.U.L.E., c ya

5 out of 5 stars Do your homework.......2007-05-14

Okay, folks, if you're a Peter Gabriel fan of his POP material, then this album is not for you. But if you watched the movie and realize you are buying a movie soundtrack and not a pop album, then buy this. This album represents Peter Gabriel's commitment to world music and his Real World Studio. This, in my opinion, represents one of the most powerful movie soundtracks ever produced. This album is beautiful and I applaud all who dive into this delicious audio masterpiece.

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-02-23

I guess if you enjoy (really -really weird world music) it's your buy then. If you are looking for the Peter Gabriel sound--move on. It seems he takes a guess at what might have been the feel for a sound track like this and bore us to sleep. It drones on with a horrible same sounding theme throughout each track.

You will find excuses to get on the phone while listening to it or take the trash out finally.

5 out of 5 stars Indescribable - but maybe not for all Peter Gabriel fans.......2003-12-22

I bought this CD years ago after watching the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" and it was one of the best music purchases I ever made. So good in fact, I am willing to pay for it twice - my old copy was stolen after a house break-in. Those considering this album must keep in mind however that this is quite far-remomved from Peter Gabriel's other work, which caters largely to the rock/pop scene (and which I also enjoy). This was a departure for him, and naturally so, as Gabriel was personally invited to write the score by director Martin Scorsese for this film. Personally, I think Gabriel (and his many collaborators) did a magnificent job capturing the essence of the movie and producing some of the most enthralling music that I have had the pleasure of listening to. The music featured here is a mix of Morrocan/Middle Eastern/Indian sounds (perhaps other influences as well), showcasing an impressive array of instruments, both traditional and electronic, seemlessly combined to produce an ethereal and moving musical experience. If you have seen the film, most will agree that it blends remarkably well into the picture. Watching the movie is not a prerequisite for enjoying the beauty of the music on this CD, however - it shines brilliantly on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius.......2003-11-22

I LOVE this CD! The textures and rhythms are amazing and really shows Gabriel's genius in putting this project together. A must-have for fans of "Last Temptation of Christ" too!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2003-11-19

I am a huge fan of Peter Gabriel. I consider him to be truly gifted. But this is one of the worst CDs I have ever purchased.

1 out of 5 stars Deliver us from Ja.......2007-07-18

I liked Venni Vetti Vecci as much as the next person but I could have seen him going pop a mile away. After his first album, he made a song with the girl group So Plush called Damn off of the Blue Streak soundtrack. Only somebody destined for pop stardom would have made that move. This album stinks on all levels. Lyrically weak, eerie vocals from Ja, candy a** production just wack period. The only good track is Connected featuring former Deathrow Records artists Crooked I and Eastwood. If it werent for thes two this track could easily be skipped. Ja rule's barbs at DMX and 50 were soft too. Example: /the Xs , the 50s/ ya'll gotta be kidding me/ these n**** is my sons/ I've raised them from young/Curtis and Lil Earl/ should have been little girls/ caused they b***hmade and they act like one of my itchbays/(ouch?). The Bad: Thug Lovin proved that Doodoo Brown...I mean Bobby Brown is washed up as he does nothing for that song but make it worse. Pop N**** is has a crummy beat by the Neptunes ans well as crummy verses by Ja to compliment the track. The Pledge remix butchers any fond memory of 2pac's So Many Tears as Ja Rule and Nas(WHAT WAS HE THINKING?) bust some uninteresting verse accompanied by a lifeless hook by this poor woman's Macy Gray called Ashanti. Last Temptation featuring Charli Baltiwhore is a failed club record that clears any dance floor coast to coast quicker than Hammer's Pumps and A Bump ever could. The Ugly: Mesmerize is the wimpiest record that Ja Rule has ever made and the fact that the video was modeled after Grease is a good enough reason to call for Ja ousting out of the rap game. Murder Reigns, which poorly samples Toto's Africa, is as tepid as tepid gets. Murder Me absolutely butchers Tony Tony Toni's classic love jam Anniversary. Dishonorable Mentions: Emerica, Warning and Rockstar. Bottom Line:Ja Rule's The Last Temptation is the worst pop rap album of all time. Sugarsweet power ballads over candy beats. Sheer Brilliance. No effort went in to this album and you can tell. One last thing before I leave: 50 never killed Ja. Ja killed himself. 50 just closed the casket. Have A Nice Day.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting mix of Elvis covers.......2004-11-06

This looked irresistable, mainly for the fact it has such an oddball collection of artists all contributing to an Elvis covers album for charity.

We get Paul McCartney (a disappointing version of 'It's Now or Never' which adds nothing to the song); a sparky Bruce Springsteen ('Viva Las Vegas'); a loud Lemmy (making 'Blue Suede Shoes' sound just like 'Ace of Spades'); a spiky version of 'Trouble' from Fuzzbox; a lovely version of 'Young and Beautiful' from Aaron Neville; a slick version of 'Crawfish' from the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra; a lacklustre 'Can't Help Falling In Love' from the usually reliable Hall & Oates; an interesting 'Follow That Dream' from the forgotten Blow Monkeys; an awful 'Rock a Hula Baby' from Pop Will Eat Itself; and a mad and vaguely obscene rewrite of '(There's) No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car' from Viv Stanshall.

And as many again from other artists which didn't interest me as much (or provoke any reaction, good or bad). The whole thing is rounded off by the King himself performing 'King of the Whole Wide World' and a good thing too.

Is this worth your time? Probably, although fourteen years on it sounds like a weird trip in a time-warp at times.

Will Elvis fans like it? Well, I love Elvis and I think the 'Last Temptation' covers are mainly listenable, so maybe ...

4 out of 5 stars Music, ladies and gentlemen, is the gift of Elvis!.......2004-09-25

This is an Elvis tribute album featuring songs from his movies, although "It's Now or Never" wasn't actually from a movie. However, Paul McCartney had already recorded the song at the sessions for "The Russian Album", and obviously the CD producers wouldn't pass up a chance to have Paul McCartney on the album. It might also be pointed out that although "Guitar Man" and "Down in the Alley" appeared on movie soundtracks, they weren't actually in the movies. But since The Jesus and Mary Chain's version of "Guitar Man" is one of my favorite songs here, I'm not going to complain about it. This is actually my favorite Elvis tribute album, of the ones I have heard. Many good performances here, and only a few stinkers. I don't want to discuss every track here, so I'll just mention some highlights. Bruce Springsteen's version of "Viva Las Vegas" is really great, it was featured in the movie Honeymoon in Vegas, but was not on the soundtrack. Sydney Youngblood turns in a good multi-tracked a capella version of "Teddy Bear". Vivian Stanshall (formerly of the Bonzo Dog Band) gives a funny performance of the goofy song "No Room To Rhumba in a Sports Car". Fuzzbox do a great version of "Trouble" that kind of sounds like "The Go-Go's go punk". The Cramps do a cool punkabilly version of "Jailhouse Rock". The album closes with takes 1, 2 and 3 of Elvis himself doing the underrated "King of the Whole Wide World" (takes 1 and 2 are false starts). Here is the complete track listing:

    1. "Viva Las Vegas" by Bruce Springsteen
    2. "Teddy Bear" by Sydney Youngblood
    3. "Loving You" by Tanita Tikaram
    4. "Let's Have a Party" by Robert Plant
    5. "Got a Lot 0' Livin' to Do" by the Pogues
    6. "Love Me Tender" by Holly Johnson
    7. "It's Now or Never" by Paul McCartney
    8. "Mean Woman Blues" by Dion DiMucci
    9. "Guitar Man" by the Jesus and Mary Chain
    10. "King Creole" by Cath Carroll and Steve Albini
    11. "Young and Beautiful" by Aaron Neville
    12. "No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car" by Vivian Stanshall & the Big Boys
    13. "Baby I Don't Care" by the Primitives

    1. "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Hall and Oates
    2. "Crawfish" by the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra
    3. "Return to Sender" by Ian McCulloch
    4. "Trouble" by Fuzzbox
    5. "Thanks to the Rolling Sea" by the Hollow Men
    6. "Follow That Dream" by the Blow Monkeys
    7. "Blue Suede Shoes" by Lemmy & the Upsetters with Mick Green
    8. "Wooden Heart" by Nanci Griffith & the Blue Moon Orchestra
    9. "Down in the Alley" by the Jeff Healey Band
    10. "Jailhouse Rock" by the Cramps
    11. "Marguerita" by Les Negresses Vertes
    12. "Rock-A-Hula Baby" by Pop Will Eat Itself
    13. "King of the Whole Wide World" by Elvis Presley

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Varied Tribute To The King.......2004-08-12

Many great versions of Elvis movie tunes (although I don't recall "It's Now Or Never" being in an Elvis flick), plus several that are instantly forgettable. Springsteen's take on "Viva Las Vegas" (used in the movie 'Honeymoon In Vegas' but for some reason left off the soundtrack) is the real find here. Hard-rockin' with no-frills, he has fun with it, even mentioning Bakersfield at the end. Tanita Tikaram and Nanci Griffith both handle their ballads sweetly and tenderly. Another highlight is Aaron Neville's live (supper club?) version of "Young and Beautiful", praising Elvis while he quizzes the audience (no one seems to know that Elvis did the song originally).

Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), who in previous years surprised many people by covering Elvis, turns in an interesting version of "Let's Have A Party", as do The Pogues with "Got A Lot O'Livin' To Do". Paul McCartney hits the high note in "It's Now Or Never" before hamming it up at the end, and Dion - the only true Elvis contemporary of the lot - proves he can still get it done, with a fine bluesy take on "Mean Woman Blues."

Hall and Oates give "Can't Help Falling In Love" a Philly-Soul treatment with mixed results, and Lemmy's metallic heart is certainly in the right place on "Blue Suede Shoes" ("'ang on"). Jeff Healey should also be mentioned for his fine version of "Down In The Alley."

Pop Will Eat Itself turns in the most experimental track on this collection with "Rock-A-Hula-Baby". A great response to Public Enemy's Elvis-bashing on "Fight The Power" (they even sample the rappers here), and the "Kiiinnnnggg" chant in the background is an especially nice touch.

Elvis himself closes things with outtakes from "King of the Whole Wide World" - one of his finest and most overlooked soundtrack recordings (from 'Kid Galahad').

All in all, even with its shortcomings, one of the best Elvis tributes put together so far. And don't miss the humorous liner notes that include Q & A with the artists, covering a variety of Elvis topics.
