Product Description
Prodigal Sunn, co-founder of the original Wu-Fam group Sunz of Man, spits fire and truth on his solo debut "Return of the Prodigal Sunn". P-Sunn has built a reputation as one of the more socially conscious and lyrically deep artists associated with the Wu. The new album is a snapshot of the ebb and flow of life itself. Uplifting tracks like "Movin' On Up" (produced by B-Original), "Reach Out" and "Love Is Love" (produced by K-Beats) are wrapped in the darkness of "Brutality" (produced by RZA), "Procrastinators" (produced by J.Wells) and "Betrayal". The album features appearances from O.D.B's brother 12 O'Clock, 60 Second Assassin, Chi-King, Yung Masta, A&R, Madame Dee and C.C.F. Division.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good disc.......2006-09-13

Good hip hop with lyrics over and beyond what was expected. Prodigal Sunn talks about things others don't - Procrastinating, being Puzzled in life, living as Godz People, plus more. Another good, quality CD from the Wu family.

4 out of 5 stars Prodigal Sunn - The Return Of The Prodigal Sunn.......2006-07-08

Very great debut by the Prodigal Sunn. I don't know whats up with the hate, you people claiming that your real Wu fans and not liking this new stuff, you aint real. Times change. Now let me explain.

The production, you got production on this album from a few different producers. My favorite beats on the album are songs "In My Life", "Brutality"(My favorite on the album, produced by RZA), "Betrayal", "Godz People". Those are the main ones I really like. Some of the beats on the album I thought could have been replaced by different beats. But overall I think the production/beats are GOOD. So check out the new era.

Lyrics, I like Prodigal Sunn's way of rhyming. Mainly different than most other artists and even some from the Wu Camp. He has a pretty good vocab, and spits on real life. Couple songs about ladies, but nothing to far. He gots enough dark stuff on the album to listen to. Read the lyrics, and check out his rhyming abilities. He spits.

Overall, I give this album 4/5. A great album and a must for any TRUE Wu-Tang fan. Prodigal Sunn is from Sunz Of Man, so make sure you check out Sunz Of Man music also. Peace and check this out!!

My Top 5 Songs
1.In My Life
2.Brutality
3.Betrayal
4.Godz People
5.Puzzled

3 out of 5 stars Return of the Sun.......2006-03-15

With the brash of Sunz of Man releases being released over the past few years (each with wavering quality), I admit that I was skeptical upon purchase. However, I must also admit I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this album. It starts off with a typical Wu-Fam sounding beat for the track, "In My Life," which really sounds like it belongs on Rae's Immobilarity. Prodigal holds it down lyrically, and 12 O'Clock drops nicely on the guest appearance. Next up is "Soul Survivor" which has a Wu-Tang Killer Bees (the first one) feel to it. The beat is a simple chopped sample over a classic Wu drum pattern. Fairly typical, but hot nonetheless. "Movin On Up" continues the fire with a summer-type positive vibe, featuring the vocal talent of Madame Def (she can really sing, and she fits this vibe perfectly). "Brutality" is one of two RZA beats on the album, and this beat returns to the gritty, grimy sound from RZA. This song really has that old-school Wu-Tang feel, and one can only hope this reflects the direction in which RZA beats are headed. The other RZA beat featured on the album provides the soundscape for "Lovely Ladies." Unfortunately, to me, this one of the worst tracks on the album, but, then again, I never really felt the Wu-style love songs. In fairness, the sample-chopping is old-school RZA and the beat is a simple break. Other notable tracks include "Betrayal" (with some nice keys providing the melody here), "Puzzled" (which is reminscent of some of the better moments of KP's View from Masada), and "Sunshine" (which again features the beautiful voice of Madame Def, razor-sharp lyrics from Prodigal, a tight drum pattern, a semi-eery fretless bass riff, and a more uptempo mix of instrumentation). My personal favorite is "Godz People," which features the oft-singing 12 O'Clock with one of his better singing-hooks in a while (It's been a long time). While he's off-key as always, he rides the melody well, and sets the tone for some of Prodigal's more inspiring lyrics over a simple, yet addictive sweet-horn melody. While most of the album is really worthwile, there are a few songs which sound out-of-place. It sounds as if the quasi-clubby trend of other Wu-Fam members caught on and spread to P.Sunn's effort. Aside from the two or three tracks, this is a solid album, much better than I expected, and shows a lot of promise for the future. It's certainly one of the better Wu affiliate releases in a while. I'd say that if you have been a Wu-Fam fan (especially a Sunz of Man/Royal Fam fan), then you will enjoy this album. If you've been disappointed by the recent Sunz of Man releases, then this should successfully end your disappointment. If you've never heard of Sunz of Man, how did you stumble upon this review?
Rating on my scale: 3.5 of 5 OR 7 of 10

2 out of 5 stars this album is horrible.......2006-03-07

i'm sorry, i'd like to think i'm a real hip-hop head and a true wu fan.

this album is half ass. horrible production. lazy and uninspiring lyrics that make this generic new york album seem like lyrical nyquil.

lil dap would sound better over these beats. it pains me cuz ps is dope. he was great on the sunz of man album and killed that think differently compilation.

i rarely buy albums and it's because i'm always getting burnt like this one. no hate, if you know who i am you'll know i'm not hating because its easy.

i'm hating cuz PS is a dope rapper with a halfass album. he could have done better, instead he made u-god seem like rakim.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Solid Debut.......2005-07-18

I copped this disc in an effort to satisfy my perpetual craving of Wu-Tang and Wu-Affiliate music. For those who don't know, Prodigal Sunn is a member of Sunz of Man, the group that is generally recognized as the strongest off-shoot of the Wu. Although this is a pretty decent album it does not have the feel of a Wu/Wu-Affiliate recording. The production is mainly handled by B Original and a few other cats, and they all provide solid tracks. However, the RZA basically steals the show on the two cuts that he produced, the infectious "Brutality" and thumping "Lovely Ladies." What holds this album back is Prodigal Sunn's rather limited rap skill and average lyrics. He is basically a second-tier MC. Fortunately, he should benefit from the major-retail distribution that his label (Free Agency) was able to obtain. Meanwhile, more talented Wu-Affiliates such as Hell Razah and Streetlife are struggling to have their albums distributed beyond the Internet. All-in-all, Prodigal Sunn is a common rapper rapping over solid tracks; nothing ground breaking, nothing distinguishing, and nothing to get real excited about. The one thing that is exceptional about this artist is his aversion from degrading misogynistic lyrics. His songs concerning the opposite sex are tasteful and appreciative; and for that, he certainly deserves a big pat on the back.
