Straight Outta Newport [Enhanced] [Explicit Lyrics]

They say humor and music shouldn't mix, but it seems no one told leisurewear-clad Welsh rap octet Goldie Lookin' Chain: Straight Outta Newport, a major-label compilation of the highlights of their last five self-released CD-Rs, is the rare comedy record that transcends its laugh-out-loud novelty. The gags they offer are seldom sophisticated--the presence of a song titled "Your Mother's Got A Penis" has probably already alerted you to that fact--but the jokes come thick and fast, and there's enough deft characterization to GLC members Dwain Xain, Mr. Love Eggs, and The Maggot to drag the likes of "Half-Man, Half-Machine" and "Soap Bar" into the realms of situation comedy. Many of their best ideas are stolen: "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do" nabs a vocal hook from KRS-One's "Sound of the Police," while "Self Suicide" makes a cheeky rip from '90s rap goths Gravediggaz. But for all the petty theft on show, the GLC aren't lacking in ideas--there's not a bad track here. --Louis Pattison

3 out of 5 stars Safe album but missing a few tracks.......2006-03-06

Well first, you're on Amazon, so since you have the opportunity go and get the actual "Greatest Hits" imported from the UK. The reason I say this is that one of my favorite tracks "The Maggot" as well as a GLC classic "You Knows I Loves You" and the hidden track "Holiday" don't appear at all on Straight Outta Newport. However as for "Taxi (Enter The Dragon)", "Duffryn Vigilante Squad", and "Delivery Driver" they never appeared on Greatest Hits in any incarnation.

As for the content of the album itself, a wide selection of the GLC's 6 previous albums are represented here, from Don't Blame The Chain's "Time To Make A Change" to The Manifesto's "Self Suicide". To Straight Otta Newport's credit, it does a better job of not coming off as a Manifesto rerelease in quite the same way that Greatest Hits may (though once again at the cost of a great tune, and a hit song). In truth what is probably the most important track for this particular album, "Guns Don't Kill People, Rapper's Do", does make an appearance. It is not only an original track but it may be the track most Americans are familiar with (getting airplay on Satellite Radio).

Either way you decide to go it's hard to bring down this album, the times I've played Self Suicide alone justify the purchase, while the times I've played The Maggot as well speak against it. Get this if its your only option, but click on over and buy Greatest Hits for the full experience.

4 out of 5 stars My opinion.......2006-02-26

Worth the listen. Enjoyable sound and very funny. Great parodies of repetitive current and past pop idioms and clever new material. Occasionally lewd where it serves good purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Watered down, but still safe, clart.......2005-11-08

I hate the fact that GLC's Welshness has been watered down for the American market - my favorite stuff of theirs has always been the stuff that's the *most* Welsh: "Dufferyn Vigilante Squad", "Delivery Driver" and most especially "Taxi (Enter The Dragon". It's just incomprehensible to me why the record company found it necessary: do they really think every small town in America doesn't have an equivalent of Dragon Cars??

That said, any GLC is better than no GLC at all. These guys are hilarious. Buy this.

5 out of 5 stars safe as F***.......2005-06-12

You hear this and you can't believe it. Is it a comedy album or what? It's more interesting than 95% of hiphop albums made this year. The cover of the album has eight Welsh guys recreating the cover of NWA. Besides that there is little in common with West Coast rap. It's more like Super Furry Animals decided to make a rap comedy album. "Self Suicide" makes fun of all the dead pop stars. One of the more inspired songs is "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do." This has everything great about a GLC tune. Other songs seem like comedy routines. Some of the classics are "Your Mother's Got A Penis" and "The Maggot." Much of this album derives its comedy from excessive drinking and excessive weed smoking. This is a funny album. But is it more like listening to Cheech and Chong than a proper band. Who cares?

5 out of 5 stars you knows it!!!.......2005-05-30

glc is an awesome British rap group. I was a fan before this album was released in America (it was already popular in England under the name "Greatest Hits") and was excited when it became available stateside. While it doesn't seem to have attracted much attention, it is SO worth a listen! It is catchy and funny and irreverent, and, what's more, these guys can really rap. This CD really earned it's parental advisory, so buyer beware.
The best song on this album is "Half Man Half Machine".
