It's hard to believe that Stephen Marley is only now making his solo debut. But as the brains (producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, singer) of the family who has been behind the Grammy-winning careers of the Melody Makers and Damian Marley, as well as young brothers Kymani and Julian, he hasn't been slacking off or lost in a haze of ganja. Perhaps too acutely aware of the magnitude of this record, Marley finished it once, then scrapped several songs and started anew. The results this time reveal an artist who is in complete control of his medium: Some songs have a political edge; some are societal critiques; some are lullabies to his children; some are party anthems. The sound brings in such unlikely but satisfying elements as flamenco guitar and nyabinghi rhythms. Throw in guest spots from Mos Def, Ben Harper, his brothers and others, and Mind Control truly does sound like the work of a master craftsman able to weave all these different ideas into one cohesive whole. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
A member of the celebrated Marley sibling group The Melody Makers since the age of seven, the 5 time Grammy Award winning producer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist is stepping center stage for the first time. Mind Control is all Stephen and a cornucopia of the sounds and styles that he loves: a blend of reggae, rock, R&B, nyabinghi rhythms, flamenco and hip-hop. It's an album with the grit and flavor to rock old-school Kingston sound systems and slippery, waxed Miami Range Rovers alike. Featured cameos from Damian"Jr. Gong" Marley, Julian Marley, Mos Def, Ben Harper, Mr. Cheeks and Spragga Benz.

Awesome!.......2007-08-03
This is a great album. I would say its the best album put out by a Marley since Bob. Awesome, groovy, hip-hop and dancehall influenced reggae. The best song is "Traffic Jam (f/ Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley)," as you have probably already heard. Other great songs are "Mind Control," "Chase Dem" (with Bob's "Crazy Baldhead" as the backing music), "Lonely Avenue" (an awesome Ray Charles cover), and "Fed Up." Get this if you have all of Ziggy's or Damian's albums because I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
JAH IS LORD OF LORDS.......2007-07-08
Stephen "Raggamuffin" Marley puts his piece out for everyone to wake up. True Gideon Soldier, Respect, Raspect in every single aspect. JAH LIV
It's ok.......2007-07-02
This album have some good music, but it's not what I was waiting for. Hoping one day, they'll (Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers) start making music like they used to and return to be once again one of the best reggae band.
Fantastic Album.......2007-06-20
I LOVE this album!! Coming from a Caribbean Country (Belize), and being a huge fan of reggae music, it is always nice to find new songs to listen too. This album is so refreshing...it has old style reggae mixed in with all other genres of music. It is just fantastic!!!!!!!! His concert was also amazing. I recommend this album to anyone who is a reggae music fan!

Marley Magic Once Again.......2007-06-11
This is probably one of the greatest compilations of music to come out of the Marley camp--and there are a LOT! This is a remarkable body of ambitious work for Stephen's debut as an artist--having produced much of his brothers' work in the past--including the Grammy-Award winning album from Damian "Halfway Tree". He definitely has his father's eye for organization as well as playing and singing music. One of the best tracks (and for me it is hard to choose--"Inna di Red", the title cut "Mind Control" and "Iron Bars" being on the top of my list) is "Traffic Jam" featuring none other than Damian Marley (I can't get enough of him). Also featured on the album is brother Julian Marley. Buy it! You won't regret it! Genius does run in this family!

Innovative and engaging, Zion I's Mind over Matter succeeds because of its impressive conceptual execution. The Bay Area trio of Zion, Amp Live, and DJ K-Genius set the tone with the old-school energy of "Revolution (B-boy Anthem)," reawakening hip-hop's subversive impulses. Spiritual--not economic--uplift is the focus of this album, and Zion's meditative lyrics deconstruct materialist craving ("Venus") and deliver stream-of-consciousness musing ("How Many"). Zion I avoid being overly earnest, tossing in no-frills bangers ("Critical" with Planet Asia), and also tastefully embrace drum & bass on the previously released single "Inner Light" and the soothing instrumental "Metropolis." This versatile and progressive musical ambience, courtesy of the knob-twiddling of 418Hz Productions, mirrors their lyrical tone, serving up a nourishing blend of beats and rhymes. --Del. F. Cowie

Seriously On Point!.......2007-04-16
This creative project is lyrically rich, musically diverse and socially conscious. Lyrics complex but comprehendable. This is definately a timeless project that will last test of time. Hopefully, the reality of the lyrics won't be long lasting but Zion I's reflection is quite vivid and clear. They are taking RAP to another level and I definately will purchase more of their lyrical gifts, True & Livin is my next but Street Legends is their most recent (2007), eventually I will get them all. This is message music.
Mind Over Matter.......2006-10-05
Hip Hop fans of all sorts will appreciate this upon its first listen. Believe all the five star reviews that its receiving. Its by far one of the illest LP's you'll discover and play over and over again. Production=A+.....Lyrics=A++
this isnt oil, prices are way too high.......2006-09-04
this album is amazing, if you want this album go to zion is website (search for it) and its only 12 dollars! i love amazon but 40 dollars is absolutely rediculous. and yes this album might actually be worth 40 dollars however zion i have it on their website for 12 so drop by over there and stop these people from trying to make an all to easy dollar.
Sickest album.....EVER!!!!.......2006-03-02
Straight up this is the illest album ive ever heard...no bullsh*t filler tracks, NOTHING. Actually its more than just a sick album, its the beginning of a new generation of hip-hop, for real any fan of "underground" hip-hop or an upcoming MC must cop this album. Its beat that most people wont ever hear this gem. Anyway, all this has already been said, just puttin in my word to advise anyone thinking about getting it to stop waiting and BUY IT. Best spent 15 bills of my life.

Great Album, (but these prices are nuts!).......2005-09-16
This album is an amazing combination of electronica and hip hop. Amp Live is an amazing and original producer, and Zion keeps it clean and thoughtful. I saw them live and it was the best show I have ever attended. Their new CD, True and Livin', is more mainstream, but equally amazing. It has guest appearances from Del, Talib Kweli, Aesop Rock, and Blackalicious. How did they get so many great rappers on their album? With an amazing, original sound, and Mind Over Matter is where they first burst onto the scene. Don't spend too much on it though, most of these sellers are crazy.

another average album by a master emcee.......2006-07-24
Even though most of his albums are sub-par beats and production wise and theme wise, Canibus is still a mad tight emcee. It's just his direction. Its way off. He would do well to hook up with a tight producer, even a mainstream one. If he stays true to his lyrical skill he can never sell out. His themes are okay, they have never really been that great, but they allright. His lyricaL flow is sometimes amazing, sometimes so-so. Its always hit or miss with this guy. But I like this album better than hip hop for sale. I would still recommend any canibus album to rock at least a few times. His is an ill rapper who gets no credit or respect. He is hell bent on ripping emcees and being angry, and that's cool, but he needs more. I think his flows about weed and woman are weak, and sometimes he ego trips. Mind control is still pretty tight. The tightest track are: 33 3's,Gybaotic,Mind control, Last laugh, the rest are all right, some are forgetable.
like ten over 3.......2006-01-29
YO MIND CONTROL IS A DOPE AS CANIBUS DISC AND THIS WAS DONE AND ALL THE TRACKS WERE PICKED IF BIS DIED IN THE MILITARY THIS WOULD BE HIS FINAL ALBUM LUCKLY HE DIDN'T AND WE'VE GOT A BANGIN' ALBUM
I'M NOT A FAN OF THE WHOLE CD BUT MOST OF THE TRACKS I LIKE:
33'3S
LAST LAUGH
MIND CONTROL
SUPID PRODUCERS
TALKN' THE TALK
Very little material, but 3 or 4 hot songs........2005-11-01
There are at least 3 songs on this album that for any real Canibus fan make it worth the money. "33 3's" is a simply brilliant song that displays 'Bis in classic form. "Mind Control", the title track, has a great beat with a catchy, more-mainstream hook, but with good though less abstracted lyrics. "Talk the talk" is simply hot lyrics with a nice beat to it that will grow on you. Here Canibus comes hard against his critics and detractors in an effective way. Those represent the core of this 11 track album, while a 4th --"Canibus Man"-may deserve mentions as a decent Canibus track over a rap-rock beat with a fierce tone, but not Canibus at his best in my opinion.
"Last Laugh" and "Stupid Producers" have both been featured elsewhere and both represent decent, though not great Canibus material. The rest of the album is consists of good lyrics mitigated by melodramatic and often difficult to listen to delivery, mixed with poor beats. Not much worth mentioning.
As always Bis shines on the mic with sick lyrics, and "33 3's" especially demonstrates classic Canibus concept and lyrics that his die hard fans love so much. Over-all though, we have 11 tracks, one of which ("Nobody") isn't even an actual song (and was also previously featured on the "My Name is Nobody" cut). So what we have here is really 3 good songs, 1 pretty good one, 2 good ones that were previously out there, a few other songs ranging from junk to decent (depending on if they grow on you) and an introspective and very philosophical outro track that is also old material. Is it worth your money? To the average hip-hop fan? Probably not. Go pick up "Mic Club" or "Rip The Jacker" or any other of his albums for that matter if you want a better sense of Canibus' talent.
For a true Canibus fan? You've probably heard around 33% of this already anyhow, but the good songs might be worth the dough; think of it as a pricey single. Still, while this might be somewhat disappointing-particularly considering the quality and progression begun by his last two albums-it's still worth 4 stars based on the quality of the 3 or 4 good songs, and the other 2 or 3 decent (though old) songs on here. But the lack of content and the reuse of old stuff is pretty depressing.
Waste of money, plastic and paper.......2005-09-28
Yo....I'm a huge fan of Canibus but this album is a true travesty. First of all hardcore Bis fans have heard 75% of this over the last few years. The hottest joint on here is last laugh and I DLed that from MP3.com like 3 or 4 years ago. Other stuff was released on canibus' site on albums, "My Name is Nobody" etc. the stuff that hadn't been heard....should have never been heard.
It's like taking all of the edited pieces of the six star wars movies and gluing them together to make it into a movie....it makes no sense and is an embarassment to all involved.
Keep this album away from EVERYONE!
An above-average album by Bis, but far from his best effort..........2005-09-21
Before listening to this album, keep in mind of these important facts: 1. This album was recorded between the releases of "2000 B.C." and "C True Hollywood Stories" 2. Much of the material on this album was leaked YEARS before 2005 either through Canibus's old [...] site and in his mixtape 'my name is nobody' 3. This album was released due to a contractual agreement and the material was hardly altered since 2000/2001... To the extremely zealous Canibus fan, somebody who collects everything the man ever lays his vocals on, only THREE songs are in fact 'NEW'!!! So that's why this album is receiving such fluctuating reviews (although some are out of differing tastes, but most negative reviews are out of fury). So without further interuption, here's my unbiased review of Mind Control...
Things start off nicely with Canibus's continuation of Jay-Z's classic "22 2s" by creating "33 3s". Although '2' is easier to flip around using different meanings, Bis is somewhat able to pull it off by using '3' for different words. The production is very similar to Large Professor's on the Stillmatic track 'Backwards' by Nas. The 2000 BC Canibus is present in 'Canibus Man' where Bis spits what he's famous for -- innovative battle rhymes. Production is very bass driven and is good for blasting out loud in your ride.
Mind Control stumbles a little bit with two southern influenced tracks which are both somewhat surprising and may be difficult for Canibus fans to digest. 'Atlanta' has a pretty hot beat, but the lyrics are pretty boring. And 'GYBAOTC' has a very lackluster production, but the lyrical content is comical, yet very dismissive.
Luckilly, things pick up entirely with 'In The Rain', a very introspective look at Canibus's career through his own eyes. The chorus is an extended metaphorical look at his career and he's very good at expressing his pain with his delivery in this track. The title track, 'Mind Control' is next and continues the creative streak. The production is very laid back with some female vocals on the chorus, but the overall vibe of the track is very relaxed. Canibus spits a little narrative tale on the track about leaving Universal Records and becoming reborn musically.
More battle rhymes return as 'Last Laugh' comes up next. The beat is a bit repetative and the 'hahahaha' sample may become annoying to some listeners, but the second verse alone in this song is probably the best verse on the album (although the second verse is recycled in another song 'Da Shock' with Malarchi --- which is a much better track)
Things take an unexpected plundge in quality as 2 very lackluster tracks come up to the plate. 'Not 4 Play' with Kurupt has a pretty hot beat, but the lyric-content is horrific as Bis and Kurupt trade verses about strippers, being G-ed up, and other garbage --- NEXT --- 'Stupid Producers' although innovative with its beat and subject matter, is almost impossible to listen through due to the chipmunk-voiced 'producer' whos garaunteed to grate a nerve or two.
Next comes up 'Talk The Talk' which is very likely to hype up listeners. The production is very bass driven, but the chorus is a bunch of unnecessary R&B singing. Canibus's delivery is very intense, but his lyrics are a bit too simplistic. I have mixed feelings about this track, its almost as if Canibus was running for a touchdown and fumbled at the last second.
The album closes out with some very intelligent statements by Canibus about his reception to hiphop listeners and his contributions to hiphop... His fame due to obscurity...
------
So my initial reaction to this album was that it was nice to see this material commercially released, but the fact that only 'In The Rain', 'Mind Control', and 'Talk The Talk' were the only actual new songs in an album that should've been released 4 years ago... I'm kinda on the fence, but falling more towards a positive review due to the albums diversity...

Bob Marley Lives!.......2007-04-24
Yes, Bob is gone but he lives on through his sons. Ziggy, Julian, Damian and now Stephen. Stephen's CD is very pleasant and mellow. Very similar to when you sit back and listen to Bob. I enjoyed all the brothers and hope some day they will team up and do a compilation CD. If you love Bob Marley music you will like Stephen's CD. Not to mention that of all the sons his voice sounds the most like him. I remember from Damian's Jamrock CD, I thought they were sampling Bob, but it ends up being Stephen doing the hook. I am a big fan of the Marley Clan and wish them more success.
I highly recommend this CD to all reggae lovers.

improvised or electro-acoustic?.......2006-12-27
what ever category fits the mood of the day, this album should prove to all the new-music and modern classical people that these avant metal-heads mean business. leaving the granite riffs of their usual outfits - Stephen O'Malley: Khanate, Sunn O))), etc., Aaron Turner: Isis, Old Man Gloom, etc., and joining with ambient-noise shape-shifter James Plotkin, these doom rockers create sophisticated tones and textures worthy of "serious" listening. but don't get me wrong, this sounds a bit amateurish - by track 5 it gets muddy, sloppy, lazy, loses focus, and runs out of ideas. on comes the fatigue of strong weed wearing off.
a valiant effort by all measures, but to new-comers to contemporary abstract music, there are much more seasoned, refined, and plain superior practitioners in these areas. dig, and dig.
P.S. to the reviewer below: please don't give something a 1 star because you were mistaking it for something else. that is stupid and wrong.
The REAL Lotus Eaters.......2005-07-23
OK, this needs more than a 3-star average, and would have one if some genius hadn't given it 1 star because it wasn't the record he thought it was. I wonder if he's also bought Kierkegaard's 'Either/Or' and given it 1 star because it turned out not to be an Elliott Smith album? (Just to clear things up completely, this is Lotus Eaters, not THE Lotus Eaters, so not even the same band name.)
Anyone who knows any of the work of Aaron Turner (Isis), James Plotkin (Scorn, OLD, Khanate, various excellent solo & collaborative dark ambient works) or Stephen O'Malley (Goatsnake, Sunn O))), Burning Witch, Khanate, Ginnungagap) will both appreciate and be surprised by 'Mind Control for Infants'. It does have some of the disturbing space of Khanate's 'Things Viral' and Plotkin and Mick Harris's 'Collapse'. But there are sweeter, cleaner sounds in here too. There's also an improvisational feel: not noodling 'improv', just the sense of spontaneous strokes and colours that are both impressionistic and EXpressionistic.
The title is very apt; these could almost be an infant's first impressions of the world, in the real stage before the imaginary or the symbolic (to borrow Lacan's psychoanalytic terminology) -- preternaturally wonderful, but also inexplicable and at times terrifying; an endless (and endlessly interrupted) succession of remarkable events without a reliable system for ordering or influencing them. Lotus Eaters show you something that seems to transcend subjective 'reality', but of course you have to abandon any hope of reducing it to the terms of means-end rationality.
You needn't subscribe to my babblings to appreciate this stuff. Turner, Plotkin and O'Malley are certainly three of the most talented -- and intellectually as well as aurally challenging -- artists in American music today. I wholeheartedly recommend 'Mind Control for Infants', along with all their other work.
music for the mindful........2004-06-07
ambient drone. the name is taken from homer's Odyssey, and strongly relates to the type of music here. the lotus eaters are mythological drug addicts who live on an island in ancient greek times. Odyesseus encounters them and has to drag his men off the island after they taste the lotus flower. this lotus eaters are somewhat a super group, featuring Stephen'o'Malley (sunn O))), khanate, burning witch, etc), Aaron Turner (isis, Old man gloom, etc) and James Plotkin (old, phantomsmaher, khanate, etc). the music it's self is totally atmospheric, very dark, but still pleasant to the ears. it's very relaxing, and very slow, but constantly interesting. the album is beautiful and one of my fave albums eva, totally unique, and the imagery you get from listening to it can be breath-taking. it's a wonderful journey of discovery and mystery. it's music to "zone out" to. once you've been caught by the lotus eaters you'll never want to leave.
Same Name Different Artist.......2003-12-10
If you are wondering if this is a new album of the 80s New Romantic group the Lotus Eaters, well you can stop wondering now because it is not!
Although Peter Coyle and Jeremy Kelly feels flattered for having their group name used, this album totally sounds different from the original's guitar-pop based sound.
This album is totally instrumental - ambient, new age, experimental - mixed to a degree that is not really pleasing to the ear.
