Progressive 'Nap.......2004-05-10
A comment on the band. I remember these guys from the East side of Indianapolis, the "In Crowd" night club, circa 1974-5. Knew Kenny, too. But it was the BAND, Manchild, that was as progressive as they come, real "Cool People." There should be more honest-to-goodness bands like that doin' it in the clubs today.

C'mon now, how shameless can you get ??.......2001-11-18
.......the typical American recording industry "geniuses" make me nauseous! Babyface & Manchild ???????
Manchild, the incredibly versatile Jazz/Funk band DID have one "Kenny Edmonds" in the band---virtually a NON ENTITY, as the 2 lps(now cds) were masterminded by the musical excellence of ANOTHER, Reggie Griffin!
My guess, he's 1 part P**ED off that his musical vision is being passed off as an "incubatory stage" of "Babyface" K.E.'s career, yet 1 part happy that without this shameless misrepresentation by the record label, that this fine music would be lost forever!
The funk stuff goes from the Nasty "hard" FUNK to downright ordinary run of the mill, but R.G.'s doowop-spacey ballad gem, *Especially for You", the Earth Wind & Fire homage "We Need We", and not to forget the wonderful "These are the Things That are Special", which brings to mind VINTAGE 5 Stairsteps sounds.......... These cuts stand out and are Exceptional!
R.G. is also quite a guitarist, a kind of Hybrid Eddie Hazel/ Sugar Bonner/Roger Troutman....Jazzy chops with impeccable frasing--the solo in "Especially......" is flowing and melodic, the gritty jazzfusion solo on "Red hot daddy" kicks with power & inventiveness-- he is "blowing" some fantastic lines on that track---GUITARISTS TAKE NOTICE!
The future Babyface is really just another cog in the wheel that was Manchild. Without Reggie Griffin, there's no Manchild!
I've been intrigued lately, as i just figured out this "rare groove" thing these English djs have had going--- Im amazed this band hasnt been "discovered" by these guys......I ALWAYS marvel at how the English music scene "reinvents the wheel" and sends the great musics RIGHT BACK TO THE USA (or Brasil) where these "dicovered sounds have been languishing quasi-neglected.
These dj-scene chaps have revitalized the likes of Marcos Valle and Joao Donato from brasil, and keep the musics of "obscure" US artists like Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware and Terry Callier ALIVE! So, that's good.....
I must say to these djs, "Hats Off", BUT.........HOW DID YOU MISS "MANCHILD" (!!), hehehehe (English reissue probably wouldnt even MENTION Babyface, as *style* counts with these "rare groover" fans...
Dont get this on the merits of the Babyface connection, check it out for what it is...it's a worthwhile pickup.
3 1/2 stars in general, but 100 stars for the "feature" tracks!
Too much potential to last.......1999-12-16
These guys were phenomenal! I bought both albums new, and knew instantly that they were special. However a new (very progressive) power r&b/funk rock group was just too much for the "dumbing down the masses" strategy of urban radio. Too bad. These guys would have been a great compliment to the achievements of EWF, Marvin and Stevie Wonder. Of course Kenny Edmonds went on to the Deele (thanks to Midnight Star) and later vast riches and musical sterility.
Oh the shame.
What would have been, what could have been....
Little-known band spawned today's top talent.......1998-12-06
The title of this 1997 compilation is a misnomer, as Kenneth "babyface" Edwards was not the lead singer for the band, founded in Indianapolis in 1974. It would take three years for the group to score a hit and yes, Face shared writing credit. Manchild's lead vocalist, Flash Ferrel, had a grittier, funky tenor than Face's subdued sound, which was well suited to the band's musical style. The seven-member outfit developed a local following and eventually signed with the now-defunct Chi-Sound Records. The lushly arranged, etheral ballad, "Especially For You," went to No. 70 on the R&B charts in 1978. That track is included on this disc, which features the cuts from the two LPs Manchild released before it broke up in 1980. Manchild was a true R&B band that developed a sound that mixed elements of R&B with jazz. This CD features raw, bottom-heavy,funk-laced tracks, particularly the southern blues thump of "Don't Get Me Rowdy," penned by Reggie Griffin. Griffin, Face and band member Daryl Simmons have all enjoyed successful careers as R&B writers, producers and performers. This CD is an excellent addition to music lovers who also enjoy entertainment history.

Man-Child..........2007-05-17
I was a 16-year-old when I heard "Steppin' in It." If anyone had told me that this was a fusion/jazz compilation, I would have given them the following response: "I don't have a clue of what you're talking about, but I do know one thing, this music is from outer space!"
I didn't know what to make of the music on this album, but it forced me to stretch my mind to accept what my ears were taking in. As my focus was Dance music at the time, this album, though funky, was "different." It took time for me to appreciate what Herbie was laying down.
Thirty-two years later, I can look back and say, "outstanding!" Five stars for Herbie Hancock and "Man-Child."
The best from Hancock in the '70s........2006-03-21
"Headhunter" and "Thrust" tend to receive the most accolades, and both are solid albums, but this neglected gem is the most accessible and consistently funky work from this period in Herbie Hancock's career. For someone looking to experience the brilliant yet accessible sound of "Takin' Off" and "My Point of View" redone in a fusion/funk setting, this album is a great place to start.
A space funk masterpiece.......2005-03-08
A real Herbie fan would realize that there was so much inovation on this album. Check the vicious landing of the space ship traitor and the gorgeous fender on sun touch and hang up your hang ups OWWWWWWW.Some reviewers think they know Herbie because of rock it and thrust but know Herbie from his jazz tradtional to fusion to eclectic transitions and then go back and listen to manchild.Talk what you know people this album is brilliant!! Own it and be prepared!!!disc commander
Hang Up YOUR Hang Ups!.......2005-01-13
Considering that this album is the follow up to Herbie Hancock's brilliant 'Headhunters' and 'Thrust',the albums that wrote the book on the funk-jazz sound 'Man-Child' is bound to be as magical an album as the mysterious cover art suggests and it is."Hang Up Your Hang Ups" is a strident, funky blacksploitation thats chocked FULL of guitar and Moog breaks for you hip-hop samplers!Elsewhere "Sun Touch" and "Bubbles" are smoldering, drippy funky fusion filled with lush, melodic keyboard and analog synth textures."The Traiter","Heartbeat" and "Steppin In It" are harder edged uptempo funk.Overall 'Man-Child' comes off as the 'pure funk album' Herbie was planning to make with his previous two records because the jazz influences are kept to a bare minimum. For fans of fusion and mid 70's electronic Moog/ARP funk this album is a treasure but for those interested in earlier, more abstract fusion this may not be your thing. It's only a pitty that some very similar sounding and conceived albums by George Duke and Jan Hammer from roughly this same period remain out of print. It's a testament to the fact that, luckily,Hancock managed to be connected with Columbia records who have kept classic funk LP's by Herbie Hancock like this in print!
Great Follow-up to (2) classics..............................2004-07-28
I definately recommend- Headhunters & Thrust before you buy this one, but once you have those, Man-Child is just as essential. This is a killer continuation of the funk H.H. & the Headhunters started with the album of the same name. It's like "Headhunters" opened the door- "Thrust" F*@#'d S*@# up and "Man-Child" was a sweet goodbye to some of the best funk music you will ever hear....... Ya dig?

His voice sounds much better now! I think with his vocals and the rza's producing, we could another wu classic in the making!

The Church's understated pop genius.......2003-05-18
I've always loved this album because it's not the same as The Church, yet it has all the trademarks:Beautiful textural guitars, great songwriting, and a great vibe. Mr. Koppes is not the vocalist that Steve Kilbey is, but who cares? With songs like "Take a Vow", "These Three Things", and "Comes as no Surprise", you're in for a real late eighties pop treat. There's sixteen songs on this CD, and it can be had for pennies. Check it out.

A Child To Man.......2005-06-10
The youngest member of Wu-Tang drops his third lp, Manchild, and has matured both lyrically and physically. Shyheim's title song produced by Nashiem Myrick featuring Tekitha took us on a journey thoughout his life struggles and successes. As this album starts with "I Declare War", this paints the premise of the continuation of the entire album. Big L lends a hand on "Furious Anger" and "Trust It's On" that which he produced this east club-hop song where Shy and Infamous Bluesteele attack with force. Shyheim takes "Verses From The Arsenal" as he shows his growth with his so called verbal intercourse compared to the other two album. "One Life To Live" featuring PR Terrorist-Dom Pacchino (Killarmy) & T.M.F. team up where it mostly skills than a life story or actuality. Track 11, "Spactacular", is the standout with its looped keys and banging track. Lil' Vicious on the hook adds to the strength to this song as Shy proves he's just that. The rugged child is still rugged, but now he has an edge.

Solid Album .......2006-03-26
This cd I ended finding in Germany after years and years of searching for it since its release I guess around 1998 or so. Well even though I already heard most of the tracks on the internet it was good and for me a real accomplishment to finally find it. It was no where in sight. The hottest track is with Big L - Furious Anger. There are a few cameos on this cd. Plenty of solid better than the original members type cd. I haven't heard his lastest cd but I think this is his best.

New band, Old Voice...Great Music!.......2000-11-24
The new band would be Manchild; the old voice is that of Kelly Jones, vocalist and guitarist for the Stereophonics. Put these two fine ingredients together, and what do you have? Great music! Personally, I think the song "Cliches are True" is great, both instrumentally and lyrically. I have a fondness for Kelly's voice, and he used it to its full potential on this single. The song is a bit pop-ish, but I liked it nonetheless even though that isn't one of my favorite genres. All in all, this is a single to check out!
