Haiku d'Etat

Haiku d'Etat is a hip-hop revolution from within. With a combination of lush live instrumentation and lacerating lyrics, they're refreshing like a cool glass of lemonade. Longtime Los Angeles MCs Aceyalone and Mikah 9 (of the fabled Freestyle Fellowship) and Abstract Rude (of Abstract Tribe Unique) are among the best in the biz, flipping effortlessly from abstract poetics to battle rhymes, altering their cadences with ease, and generally ennobling the microphone with their superior skills. Yeah, MCs talk about sex all the time, but when was the last time a rapper was actually sexy? Mikah 9's raw, rapturous rhymes on "Pro Tool Robots" are. On the outstanding "Los Dangerous," Haiku d'Etat kick outlaw flows over a percolating, sax-laced beat. They make fun of rap's screw-faced status quo at the end of "West Side Slip and Side," then return to their laid-back selves on the cheeba-laced Bob Marley remake, "Kaya." Instead of getting mad at the state of the hip-hop nation, Haiku d'Etat defy the mind-numbing norm with their dangerously good music. --Lizz Mendez Berry

Haiku D'Etat brings together three of the L.A. underground's most notable talents: Aceyalone and Mikah 9 (of the Freestyle Fellowship) and Abstract Rude (of Abstract Tribe Unique). They last collaborated on their 1999 debut, but the intervening five years haven't diminished their chemistry. Throughout their careers, these lyricists have drawn frequent comparisons to jazz artists as their wordplay and rhyme flows resemble a kind of verbal bebop. This sophomore effort finds them innovating further still. On "Mike, Aaron and Eddie" they stutter out words and phrases with a mechanical proficiency that's both organically effortless yet unnaturally precise. "Transitions and Eras" takes the jazz motif to its most literal as the three spin out a tangle of rhymes while Fat Jack keeps the beat in the pocket through his bass lines, rim taps, and tinkling piano. Less heady, but no less enjoyable, are the post-relationship analysis "All Good Things" and braggadocio fest "Top Qualified," featuring Quannum's Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab, and Lateef. Inspiringly creative and impressively virtuoso, Coup De Theatre is easily as strong, if not better, than anything Acey, Ab, or Mikah have done individually since they last worked together, and hopefully it won't be another half-decade until they collaborate again. --Oliver Wang

smoke dogg this is for you.......2006-03-10
are you a smoke dog. well from one smoke dog to another...this is the coolest album for people like us. what the hell? this is awesome.
i almost threw up in my mouth a little..........2006-02-14
...when i first heard "Mike, Aaron & Eddie." it's THAT sick. and the group has such a unique sound that you can't even imagine what sickness lies within. i read another reviewer's comment that he would have paid the price of the cd for that track alone...and i wanted to make sure it's clear that his comment, by no means, implied that the rest of the album skimps. this one's a must-buy.
Amazing & Blazing .......2005-11-27
Not a curse word to be hear. A first. This is REAL HIP HOP . THANK YOU. GO GET THIS AND J-LIVE LATEST(2005)
just buy it.......2005-10-22
an absolutely amazing album for both hip hop fans and none. great beats, great lyrics from some of the best mcs out there. quannum mcs come in on track ten and show why they are known as hip hop champions. the album has soul that you dont find in alot of albums. there are some tracks not because they arent good but because the ones after them are just classic jams.
i found the album before i knew any of the mcs on it. just happened to hear it the day it came out at my local record store, heard tracks 8,9,10 in the store and went and found out what it was.
buy it, its in constant rotation in my music collection, which is varied.
Mike, Aaron and Eddie own the stage..........2005-08-29
4 1/2 stars on the real.
Haiku d'Etat is, without a doubt, one of the most original acts I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Skilled and thoroughly versed in hip-hop's ever fluctuating language, Mike, Aaron and Eddie take the music to a different plane of existence. The second release is much smarter than the first, accompanied by a DVD of freestyles and exclusive videos of the group's tours and interactions. Let me break it down like so:
Beats:
Production has definitely stepped up a notch. On the frenetic, "Mike, Aaron and Eddie" you are caught up in a fast paced blitz of words and beats, which will definitely have your head nodding and your jaw dropping. Other cuts like "Stoic Response" may leave you desiring a bit more. "Top Qualified", though lyrically off the meter, could have benefitted from better production.
Flows:
This is where the album shines. Songs like "Kats", "Dogs" and "Coup De Theatre" are surely examples of the triumvirate's great presence and writing ability. Not only that, they know how to entertain you with off the mark quips and still keep the beat. If you want lyrics, look no further. Also, check out the DVD if you yearn for more.
Lasting Appeal:
I have to give it to them for trying something new and being very original. Honestly, most people in the industry can't take those types of chances because they'll lose their fan base or for fear of being alienated. Haiku d'Etat is an album that forces you to take notice of three cats that move hip-hop towards a new horizon. I enjoy it tremendously.
Buy this one and get the first album just to know where they came from.
Ani'mout!

Top-Notch, Ear soothing hip-hop.......2006-08-26
This album is quite a treat, and if you are familiar with the project blowed clique, then you know it will not disappoint. Up there with Haiku d'Etat's "Coup de Theatre", and Freestyle Fellowship's "Shockadoom", "Innercity Griots", and "To Whom it May Concern". Conscious and mind-blowing lyrics lacing musically rich jazz-influenced instrumentals, it's hard to ask for a better trio of lyricists to come together and compliment each other so well. Prepare to be refreshed and enlightened!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE RE-RELEASE THIS ALBUM!.......2004-06-03
This is probably one of the most classic albums that came out under the nose and it definetly should be repressed. It is great, and I would definetly recommend it. ALSO it is a little jazzy so if you don't like hardcore underground rap and some jazzyness it might not be the best for you.
An amazing find.......2003-04-17
Both spontaneous and finely crafted, this album can only be described as the hip-hop version of a jazz jam session. I took a chance on it, having never heard of the album in particular, but with a good general knowledge of the emcees and an affinity for hip-hop with live instrumentation. What I got was a front-row seat at a dark, smoky, afterhours lounge and the chance the bear witness to hip-hop at its rawest and in its purest form. Each emcee proves that the voice is in fact another instrument, using unique pattern and pace in their rhymes, and the improvisational vibe harkens back to the jazz of Miles and Coltrane, with each verse the modern version of their sax and trumpet solos. A truly unique album that captures a specific time and space and saves it, so that everyone can feel a part of it.
Full disclosure is that I do skip some songs, but the ones I listen to more than make up for it. Highlights include Non Campus Mentis, Studio Stage Street, Wants vs. Needs, and Still Rappin. "Wants vs. Needs" is in fact a profound indictment of consumer culture ... check the chorus: "getting the things that you want/ versus getting the things that you need/ tell me how bad do you want it/ and tell me how much of its greed."
All in all, I can't recommend it highly enough. When I pull out examples for my grandkids of what the essence of underground hip-hop was when I was young, this will be among the first albums that I grab.
This Album is Classic.......2002-04-10
This album is straight sick, west coast underground, classic!... If you like groups like Hieroglyphics, Swollen Members, Jurrassic 5, or just underground hip hop, get this album. It is hella dope!
Simply the best.......2002-03-23
Im into hip hop, I don't know if everyone would call this hip hop because of the live instrumentation, but this is my favorite album ever. This album is one of a kind musically and lyrically. Aceyalone, Mikah 9, and Abstract Rude are my 3 favorite MC's. This album was like a blessing for me.

Re-release of a masterpiece from 1999.......2004-12-11
Haiku's new album just dropped recently(check that out) but this is the new re-release of their self-titled debut. Sorry, the track listing is wrong! None of the "Heavyweights" are to be found, there's no "West Side Slip & Slide," "Slower Traffic To The Right" is #11, and a track called "Wo Wo Wo Yeah Yeah Yeah" is the last one. Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, and Mikah 9 challenge themselves to bring originality to the table here. I didn't like this one that well at first, but the more I listened, the more I realized how amazing this cd really is! I have to say, this one really is even better than their new classic "Coup De Theatre," and it's really different than anything the three have done in their versatile careers.
The thing is, if you listen enough, you shall realize that each song here contains something essential to hear. All are good, but some definitely stand out more than others. This album is really a success in musical achievement, definitely Hiphop, but very authentic. Although these three are top-notch lyricists, the niche that they find here is the beauty of the all-around music that is offered. It's very jazzy, and I'm sure they had a live band behind them. A guitar is even used on a few tracks, most noticeably "Non Compos Mentis" and "Still Rappin'." The saxophone used on "Wants vs. Needs" is a great compliment.
The title track, the name of this super-group and album, kicks it off. This is definitely a good song, although the chorus is distorted and is the only track that doesn't sound too sharp musically other than "Slower Traffic To The Right." "Los Dangerous" is not one of my favorites, but they try out some reggae style, and do it well. Listen to Mikah's solo "Pro Tool Robots" because it's hard to descipher at first, not one of the best tracks here, but memorable in it's own right. "Wants vs. Needs" is an important track. It reminds me of "Temptations," the song off the album of same name by Freestyle Fellowship(Mikah and Acey are in that group). I thought they could have come a little stronger on this track, but the music is definitely enthralling. "S.O.S." is one of my favorites, and "Firecracker" is unique, one of the few uptempo tracks, which has mostly battle rhymes and cool sound effects. "Other MC's" is memorable, especially Ab Rude's verse, and "Slower Traffic" was solid, Acey's last verse outstanding. "Studio Street Stage" is one of the most forgettable, but that's because everything else is so great.
My favorite songs have yet to be mentioned. "Non Compos Mentis" is absolutely wonderful, Acey is just HUNGRY on this one! "Still Rappin'" and "Kaya" are simply relaxing. "Still Rappin'" is easily the standout, and one of the best songs ever in Hiphop! It's simple, yet embodies everything that's good about Hiphop: positivity, feel-good vibes, reminiscing, perseverance. The guitar at the beginning get me anxious for the rest of the song! I wish Mikah would have actually 'rapped' a little instead of singing his whole verse, but this song is still monumental. The last, "Wo Wo Wo Yeah Yeah Yeah," I didn't like the brevity at first(just over 2 min.), but it's still great nontheless. This joint is just one spectacular verse by Aceyalone with great music.
The first listen through this album you might be like, "What the hell are they doing?" I mean, I didn't expect solo joints here like Mikah's "Pro Tool Robots" and the last track with Aceyalone. "S.O.S." has just Acey and Ab Rude, while "Kaya" has just Acey and(Fellowship member) P.E.A.C.E. On a couple of the tracks, Acey's verse is only like 20 seconds. It's not as amazing lyrically as I was unfairly expecting. Their infatuation with weed manifests numerous times, but I guess I can overlook that. They didn't diss modern day rap music as much as I thought they would, but they do their own thing! However, Aceyalone does bring his A+ game lyrically on this album, much to our delight. Like I said this album is about authentic Hiphop music! It's definitely different than "Coup De Theatre," and different than anything they've ever done solo.
Make sure you cop both albums by Haiku D'etat. It's great Hiphop music, and much different and better than pretty much anything out there! Mikah 9 doesn't stand out as much here as on "Coup De Theatre." His mouth does kind of run off like I thought it might, especially on the first couple tracks and "Wants vs. Needs." Although, he does essentially MAKES "Still Rappin'," one of Hiphop's all-time classic songs. Like I said Acey is the lyrical standout, and Ab Rude does have his moments. The real heroes here are the musicians, and how the three MC's play off the instruments and each other. Don't wait, hesitate, or debate...pick up "Haiku D'etat" today!
