Things have gone ridiculously well for Coldplay since 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head. The group's global album sales have soared past the 10-million mark, putting it in the same stratosphere as megabands U2 and the Dave Matthews Band. People have offered up their bank accounts, cars, and even bodies for tickets to its shows. And, in a interesting twist, frontman Chris Martin married Gwyneth Paltrow and set the tabloid world aflame. Funny thing, then, that the British quartet's much-anticipated third album, X&Y, is all about staying grounded. In the powerful opener, "Square One," the singer insists people are fundamentally the same no matter what their stature: "You just want... Somebody listening to what you say," he sings. On "Fix You," Martin grapples with imperfection and missed opportunity: "When you love someone but it goes to waste... Could it be worse?" Meanwhile, the vibrant single, "Speed of Sound," is all about reconnecting with the spirit and soul in the face of the paparazzi's flashbulbs. Musically, the band has never sounded more adventurous, referencing everyone from Kraftwerk ("Talk") to the Pogues ("Swallowed in the Sea"), all the while sweeping aside those Radiohead-lite comparisons to embrace a massive, moving sound that makes simplicity seem sublime. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Coldplay rocks.......2007-07-12

Even though this is not my favorite CD by Coldplay, I found it very enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars: It's No Rush of Blood to the Head.......2007-07-03

This is not a bad album. However, it is not a great album either. I am a Coldplay fan. I thought both Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head were very good albums, particularly a Rush of Blood, which didn't have a really bad track on it. X&Y is not of the same caliber. I admit that I really liked some of the tracks on X&Y--particularly Fix You, A Message, The Hardest Part, and Til Kingdom Come. However, it had at least one track that I absolutely hated, Twisted Logic, and a number of others that just seemed like filler and all blend together for me. I can't say exactly what went wrong with this album--only that something did.

Encouragingly, some of the best songs associated with this album are the B-sides, in particular Proof and The World Turned Upside Down. So, I have some confidence that Coldplay can right the ship with their next album. I give X&Y a half-hearted recommendation, but if you don't own any Coldplay albums, don't let this be the first one. Purchase A Rush of Blood and Parachutes first, and if you absolutely love them, go for this one.

Finally, I would simply ignore all of the Radiohead fanboys who constantly rip Coldplay. I love Radiohead, in my view one of the best bands of the past 20 years. But I'm not so foolish as to think that no other band can make great music, including a band that is heavily influenced by Radiohead. There is no doubt that Coldplay's music, especially Parachutes, was influenced by The Bends and OK Computer. But if you can listen to OK Computer without hearing the influence of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Miles Davis or the Beatles, then you haven't listened to enough music in your lifetime. The short story is, Coldplay stand on their own just fine without being accused of being completely derivative of Radiohead.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but this band is capable of more........2007-05-21

Having listened to a great deal of Coldplay's rarities and B-sides before, I have to say that I was unfortunately a little let-down by X&Y. Though it's by no means a bad album, when compared to tracks like "Rush of Blood to the Head", "Spies", or their almost completely unknown "Ladder to the Sun", nothing here quite matches the complexity that we all know this group is capable of. There's a lot of great moments, but not quite as much to make you drop what you're doing and hang onto every word.

If you're looking for their best work, I'd have to recommend "Rush of Blood to the Head" over X&Y. If you already own "Rush" and like what you've heard, by all means give it a shot. But just make sure you listen with an open mind.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Genius.......2007-05-14

Chris Martin is absolutely amazing. Not only does he write his own music (unlike Brittney Spears, Christina Agulera, Pink, Jessica Simpson, and so many other cheesy singers), but his music and lyrics are absolutely fantastic. If you pay attentoion to the lyrics, there is a much deper story to the entire album. Moreover, there are so many creative twists and turns with not only the melody, but also the sudden introduction of bass that bursts the song into life! My heart pounds with the beauty of Coldplay's music. I would reccomend this CD to anyone [...]

5 out of 5 stars A classic of the '00 decade.......2007-04-23

There's no denying the U2 influence on "X&Y." Chris Martin's soothing voice, mixed with soaring vocals and a huge rock sound, are reminiscent of U2's best work over the years (see U2 - The Best of 1990-2000). Other U2 elements are present as well: hopeful but questioning lyrics, tight staccato beats, swirling or chiming guitars, a bit of piano, an anchoring bass and serious musicians who truly want to change and heal the world through music, one weary person at a time.

Like Bono, Martin's voice has good range, and he can even hit the higher notes with a bit more ease (probably because he's younger than Bono and cigarettes and drink haven't yet ravaged his pipes). Also like Bono, Martin writes beautiful, transcending lyrics that really do inspire.

"Square One," one of the album's best songs, leads things off: "From the top of the first page/To the end of the last page/From the start of your own way/You just want someone listening to what you say," croons Martin. Right off the bat, there's a storybook, conceptual feel to this CD. Despite his rock-star status (or maybe because of it), Martin sounds just as insecure as many of us; check out the fragile tunes "What If" and "Fix You," for instance. "X&Y" seems to be an album about finding one's way in this tough world, taking risks and fulfilling your potential. Martin's sad lyrics are often redeemed by the hopeful tone of the album, and it's a rare feat to pull off a piece of musical work that contains such great songs AND meaningful lyrics. Unlike most multi-platinum sellers, "X&Y" has an understated edge to it that gives it a leg up.

With its killer high-pitched riff, giant rock sound and big sing-along chorus, "Talk" gets the award for the most arena-ready and accessible song on "X&Y." "You can take a picture of something you see/In the future, where will I be?/You can climb a ladder up to the sun/Or write a song nobody has sung." "Speed of Sound" also contains commercial appeal (like all these songs), and was indeed released as a single in the mid-'00s.

"X&Y's" title track is the album's most romantic, a lush love song that aims for the stratosphere via airy lyrics, a peaceful string section and mesmerizing guitar: "You and me are floating on a tidal wave, together/You and me are drifting into outer space," croons Martin. "Swallowed in the Sea" has a similarly beautiful sound and message, with Martin singing, "I could write a book." This fully loaded line almost brings the album full circle. Almost.

"Twisted Logic" contains a darker sound and hesitant vibe at first, but soon the music changes and becomes positively soaring and uplifting. The sprightly acoustic hidden track is also a gem, a love song with personal, heart-wrenching lyrics. Martin's voice sounds close and weary, his most Bonoesque vocals of the album. "For you I'd wait, till Kingdom Come/Until my days, my days are done/Say you'll come, and set me free/Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me." Words don't get more poignant than that.

The interesting thing will be to witness where Coldplay goes from here. U2 lifted its sound to more adventurous, interesting territories as they moved on (see Achtung Baby), and so too could this important band.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-07-12

This album is a classic. You can listen to it all through. It has the greatest production hip-hop has ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stand-Alone Album.......2007-07-09

Now like most other reviewers of this re-release, I bought this album cause I loved the original & this release seemed packed with extras. Now naturally I think the whole feel of the album has been drastically changed due to the 2 already mentioned tracks and if you liked letting the original just ride, then this might mess up your listening experience, but without thinking of the beautiful beats of the original cuts, I have to say Madlib does an incredible job of producing something, although not what we were hoping for, beautiful just the same. The remixes are great as well, to be honest I wouldn't have any complaints other then the fact "The Red" is one of my favorite beats of all time in it's original form, In my honest opinion it's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Not gonna lie, i love it, but there's a disappointment if u own the orignal... 4.6 stars.......2007-06-30

bought for the instrumentals and B-Sides. then i heard they produced a new beat for No Games. I also had heard something about the beat changing on the song "The Red". One of my favorite beats of alll time. one the reasons i got the deluxe edition instrumentals, to hear The Red in it's original glory. now there's a new beat. not even considered a remix. not a bad beat but not at all like the original "Red". but if u don't own the original, this 1 is still good, u'll only b missing the original "No Games" (which is dilla over the "One Beer" (by MF DOOM) beat. this new 1 is one is better in my opinion), and "The Red"(download it off itunes or any P2P software). these b-sides are nasty too!

5 out of 5 stars The Red & No Games situation.......2007-06-25

Stones Throw was served papers over the samples used for "The Red" and "No Games." That is what caused this release to be pushed back once, from May 8th, to June 19th, and the new instrumentals for "The Red" and "No Games." The versions you hear of "The Red" and "No Games" are the new instrumentals. All Jaylib releases except for this one are being recalled, and may be repressed with the new versions.

4 out of 5 stars Near flawless re-release. Why remix perfection?.......2007-06-20

I love most everything that comes out of Stones Throw, but this album is a breakaway standout classic. Two top performers at the height of their game collaborating like Monk and Trane, only you don't need to wait almost fifty years to hear them together (Discovery! doesn't count anymore since the Carnegie Hall concert; I digress). It's great to see this album get much-deserved respect in an extended package, complete with instrumentals and all new remixes from Madlib; at this price you can't afford not to pick this up.

Now the bad news: "The Red" is different - radically different - from the beat to the incredible vocal chorus by Cris Williamson (from "Shine On Straight Arrow"). This new track isn't bad, but it's not the one I loved from the original release. "No Games" also has a new backing track, and this time I might call it an improvement. These differences are also reflected in the instrumentals on the second disc. The initial pressing had a minor track called "Ice" featuring Medaphoar which is not featured here in the original version or the extended (by one verse) version from the 12-inch vinyl of "Ice" b/w "Raw Addict," which thankfully was included. I hate to diss such a great collection, but most anyone picking this version up would want to know what they're missing.

Still, don't let that stop you from getting this incredible album from Jay Dee and Madlib. If you don't have it already, you're sleeping on a hall of fame release from the underground. Pick up the original "The Red" from the Stones Throw Ten Years compilation (also must-have), and "No Games" from P2P (after you BUY this album), and you're all caught up.

UPDATE: I just found the Stones Throw website lists these two tracks ("The Red," "No Games") as "Remix (Prev. Unreleased)" but this info isn't in the liner notes or here on Amazon. They should have moved these two remixes onto the bonus disc (it's only 66 minutes long), included "Ice" and left the original album intact. Much respect to PB Wolf, but there are enough missed opportunities here to call for a do-over. Oh, and I want a pony.

1 out of 5 stars Where's The Irish Music?.......2007-07-21

This group is from Ireland but they aren't singing any Irish music, just
"New Age" music that gets quite boring.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever!.......2007-05-05

This long-awaited new addition to Anuna's discography is a major treat. The ensemble sounds better than ever, and the album's name "Sensation" is particularly apt for the selections on this recording. As always, Michael McGlynn's compositions and arrangements here are breathtaking and extraordinarily atmospheric as performed by this unique choral group. "Shining Water" is one of the most intoxicating tracks, with its hypnotic 5/4 motion and inclusion of recorded Cetlic harp played backwards in the background. "The Road Of Passage" is another major highlight, which has a soaring soprano solo and overlapping chords. The disk comes to a truly stunning close with "O Maria", a densely layered piece with a goosebump-raising repeating progression and electrifying embiance.

4 out of 5 stars Review of this album by All Music Guide.......2007-04-23

Sensation, the 10th album by Irish choral ensemble Anúna, brings together a wide assortment of music, all of it arranged or composed by its conductor, Michael McGlynn. While McGlynn's treatments may rankle purists, who, for instance, only want to hear Hildegard von Bingen performed by unaccompanied women's voices, when taken on its own terms, his cross-pollination of musical styles is never less than intriguing and is most often beguiling.

McGlynn's sophistication as a composer accounts for much of the album's appeal. The title track, featuring a speaker reciting an idyllic Rimbaud poem, accompanied by violin, harp, and women's chorus singing a sensual, impressionistic setting of the same text, vividly captures the serenity and eroticism of Rimbaud's imagery. McGlynn's setting of the medieval text Maid in the Moor Lay is disarming in its folk-like simplicity and purity. His O Maria is harmonically and texturally complex, but never sounds "difficult," and conveys an otherworldly and enveloping serenity. Other pieces, such as Silver River and Shining Water, bring a new age sensibility to the Irish folk tradition.

The other factor in making this album so sensually appealing and rewarding is the extraordinary technical prowess and secure musicianship of the singers. The ease and precision and musicality of their performances of extremely demanding music puts them in the ranks of the very finest chamber choirs. It would be a pleasure to hear them bring their formidable strength to the broader repertoire of exceptional (and exceptionally difficult to perform) choral music that is being written today.

Review by Stephen Eddins

5 out of 5 stars Musical Perfection..........2007-01-02

Anuna could sing the phone book and it would make me cry. Michael McGlynn is BRILLIANT; his arrangements are so, so rich and full...there's nothing like it.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!.......2006-11-10

At long last, Anuna returns with an album of all-new compositions by choirmaster Michael McGlynn. If you're viewing this item, chances are you're already familiar with Anuna's work, and this new album is definitely another masterpiece. The overall mood is quiet, meditative and enchanting. Some fans may miss the more energetic sound of songs like 'Salve Rex Gloriae' or 'Dicant Nunc' from past albums but the mystic mood throughout gives the album a cohesive sound which works perfectly. Top recommendation!

I'm listening to this very CD right now and it is great! My favorite songs are, heart of a champion,Jesus period,a witch's invitation, who's in the house,Jericho, now's the time, mission 3:16,America again,I've been delivered,Satan, bite the dust!,r.i.o.t,addicted to Jesus, ther is a God,sunday school rock,no monsters, and the champion.I would recommend this CD over any other Carman CD.(If you bought this you would not have to buy any other Carman CD because this CD has songs from almost all of his CDs)Thanks for reading this!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this cd!!.......2003-04-08

After checking out this cd from the public library, I could not wait to buy it. My favorite songs are: "Heart of a Champion"--for the uplifting lirics; "My story"-- for the "hawaian-like rithm. I am not embarrased to admit that when I heard this song I just got up and danced for about an hour. The song that touched my heart was "I promise"--A wonderful song to play at a wedding. Honestly, I liked most of the songs. I f you don't have the cd, just get it. You will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Heart of a champion by a champion........2002-09-24

Carman has a passion for Jesus and his desire to evangelize through his music is wonderful. God has gifted him with a beautiful voice and a great talent for writing awesome lyrics and he is using it for the glory of God.

Songs from several of his earlier albums, which I do not own, are included on this double CD. His skit on "A Witch's Invitation' is thought provoking and great to know that 'greater is the One that is in us then the one that is in the world'.

I also found his new song "We Need God in America Again" to be so true and profound,. America has moved away from the gospel of Jesus Christ to a 'higher power' whatever that power may be and this is so sad that millions of people are not hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ on which the constitution was based. Who will be answerable for these lost souls? Definitely not the ones that have listened to this song and taken it to heart!

I have several albums by Carman, including "Passion for Praise", "I Surrender All", "The Absolute Best", "The Standard" and "Revival in the Land". Heart of a Champion is a great addition to my collection and I would recommend this album to anyone wanting to listen to something different and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Another "Best Of" For Carmen!.......2002-07-05

Carman has been in the music business for decades already, so he has a lot of songs to offer in his various "Best of" albums. And this one is no different. With 90s classics like "A Witch's Invitation," "Satan, Bite the Dust," "Sunday School Rock," and "No Monsters," this album will remind you of just why you like listening to Carman in the first place. And for those of you who aren't yet Carman fans, this album will give you a glimpse of the many various song styles that he is so well known for.

Out of the 30 songs on this album, six of them are new, including "Heart of a Champion," which was the title soundtrack to Carman's 2000 movie "Champion." Though the title song is the best of the new songs, it doesn't come close to comparing to what Carman is best known for.

The six new songs notwithstanding, this is a perfect album to add to your Carman collection, or to start a new Carman collection with.

4 out of 5 stars Heart of a Great Man.......2002-04-20

Carman has led over 1 million people to Christ. It's no suprise as Carman music and showmanship have gathered crowds. I saw him yesterday and let me tell you this man is trully blessed by God.
Heart of a Champion is a fine collection, but I think His Absolute Best is a better collection. Heart of a Champion has some good songs on it. "Great God", "Who's in the House?", "Satan, Bite the Dust", "America Again", "My Story", "I've Been Delievered", "Sunday School Rock", and "The Champion". The new hits are pretty cool including the title track, "Faith Enough", and "Just Like He Said". Carman looks to be headed a new direction and it looks like its pretty bright path. Some songs are missing though like "Holy Ghost Hop" from Addicted to Jesus Album. And he's missing "The Courtroom" from Mission 3:16. Still a very good collection. I recommend getting His Absolute Best first and then this album. Wait until Carman reaches 2 million souls won. I can't wait!

John Coltrane not only made his reputation once and for all during his brief 1959-61 stay at Atlantic Records; he cut enough material to allow the label to continue releasing "new" albums (the Don Cherry collaboration The Avant-Garde) until a year before his 1967 death. The Heavyweight Champion collects those masters plus revealing alternate takes and false starts in a typical handsome Rhino box that is also packed with informative notes and great Lee Friedlander photos. While the sheer volume of music and emotion Coltrane and cohorts throw at the listener might make purchases of individual discs like My Favorite Things, Giant Steps, and Coltrane's Sound a wise choice, those committed enough to jump right in won't regret adding these seven CDs to their collections. Coltrane had kicked his multilayered sonic and spiritual quest into fifth gear by the time of his Atlantic debut, and to say he scorched plenty of earth while under the care of staff producer Nesuhi Ertegun is only the beginning of an ample description of his achievements at the label. Though he was to go even further at Impulse!, where he ended his career, Champion's tracks rate in the very small beyond-five-stars category. --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars chronological conundrum.......2007-03-02

As many jazz fans reading this review already know, there are eight albums John Coltrane recorded for Atlantic, 1959-1961:

BAGS AND TRANE ( w/ Milt Jackson )
GIANT STEPS
COLTRANE JAZZ
THE AVANT-GARDE ( w/ Don Cherry )
MY FAVORITE THINGS
COLTRANE PLAYS THE BLUES
COLTRANE'S SOUND
OLE

Given the sheer excellence of these recordings ( "Giant Steps" and "My Favorite Things" are landmarks ), this reviewer is more than a little sheepish at having to slap a 3 star rating on the "Heavyweight Champion" box set. Why? Well, it's certainly not due to the music, for I haven't any doubt whatsoever as to either its inherent quality or artistic significance. And obviously, the low rating can't be chalked up to packaging details, which are uniformly tasteful: the hard-cover booklet, more a "mini-book", is exemplary and there is a truly spectacular "extra" ( ingeniously encased in a replica of a reel-to-reel tape box ) in the form of a disc devoted to virtually *all* of the takes ( partial & complete ) of Trane's groundbreaking tune, "Giant Steps".

No, the crux of my complaint resides in what I strongly feel is an aesthetic violation: the fact that this box set, like so many others, arranges all of the music ( including alternate takes ) in strict chronological order. While this approach certainly has merits for extended live recordings or certain unique studio projects ( eg, Art Tatum's mammoth sessions for Norman Granz ), I find it has little *artistic* ( as opposed to musicological ) justification when applied to a body of work that stands so close to perfection through the arrangement its creator fashioned. Undoubtedly, there are those who truly enjoy fastidious methods of tracing artistic development, but I question whether any other than the most rigorous would be worse off just exploring the albums in their original form with alternate takes placed as appendices at the "bottom" of each particular work. And in fact, all of the work contained in this box set *is* currently available in just such a format. I highly recommend the prospective buyer think this over prior to making an investment; for those other than collectors who just *have* to have the set for the complete takes/outakes of "Giant Steps" ( I admit I wouldn't part with it ), the individual album route makes much more sense.

5 out of 5 stars The total package..........2007-01-12

This is a truly great box set.

First, the music. While I think the peaks of Coltrane's Impulse! years exceed the peaks of his Atlantic years, these Atlantic recordings are astonishingly and consistently strong from start to finish, and document one of the most interesting (and rapid) progressions in Jazz history.

Second, these are nicely mastered - great sound!

Third, the liner notes are actually well-written and interesting, with a nice mix of personal and musical history from different writers and musicians.

The 7th disc is arguably only for the hardcore music-geek fan, but it's worth at least a listen or two to just about anyone.

A box set of great music packaged just right. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION IS KNOCKOUT.......2007-01-09

A fascinating insight into the artistic development of one of the great innovators in jazz through his earlier recordings. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Atlantic Compilation, But Not Best of His Career.......2006-03-16

The conundrum of John Coltrane's career was that he was one of the most focused and dedicated horn players of all time, while continually searching for something that apparently always remained just beyond his grasp. His tenure with Atlantic Records captures the time that Coltrane came into his own, as a bandleader with a vision, and yet it also captures the restlessness of that vision, and its ability to continually transform itself into something outside his grasp. In this way, Coltrane's music is very much like life itself; while moments of self satisfaction and peace of mind are obtainable for a short while, our very nature as human beings makes certain that anything so desirable remains tenuous. Listen to Coltrane as he stretches out and his dedication to the music is beyond reproach and cannot be questioned. He lived his music as a metaphor for life, and that is why his approach to jazz has endured the test of time. His questions are eternal, and the flashes of brilliance that seem to provide answers, however fleeting, make the quest almost heroic in nature.
The Heavyweight Champion is subtitled `The Complete Atlantic Recordings' for good reason. The seven disks included herein compile every known recording that exists in Atlantic's catalog. While such exhaustively inclusive box sets usually indicate that there will be endless repetition, false starts and abandoned ideas, that is not the case here. With the exception of disk seven, which is deliberately segregated from the rest of the box because it documents (quite fascinatingly, actually) a recording session with all of its stops, starts and musical revisions, this box set contains no more than two takes of any given title. The reason for this is that the warehouse where Atlantic's tapes of all unreleased sessions (again, with the exception of disk seven) were stored was destroyed by fire. However unfortunate the historic consequences of this disaster might have been, the result is a well-focused collection of music that portrays John Coltrane as one the most restless and insightful musicians of his (or any) age.
All in all, Coltrane recorded thirteen sessions for Atlantic, dating from January 1959 through May 1961. Considering, then, how this collection represents only two and change years of Coltrane's legacy, it is remarkable to hear how much growth and change had taken place in so short a time, especially since it all sounds as if it evolved naturally, rather than from commercial or business influences. Coltrane followed his own muse - often into a corner - but it was his willingness to risk himself that draws any attentive listener inside his vision, trying to see just what he was reaching for. Like Coltrane himself, this box set doesn't provide any unequivocal answers, but it does provide all of the recorded evidence that exists, which means that all the questions are right here to behold. And, as anybody familiar with such things already knows, the way to discovery is in asking the right questions.
A- Tom Ryan

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Set.......2005-12-05

I don't have too much to add that has not already been said about this wonderful box set of amazing music.

Aside from containing all the tracks that make up the seminal albums, "Giant Steps" and "My Favorite Things," this set really puts those albums in their musical context within John Coltrane's remarkable body of work.

This set is a "must buy" both for Coltrane aficionados and for those looking to thoroughly explore his music. After intense introspection, I have to rank this set on an equal plane with the "Impulse! Complete Quartet Studio Recordings" CD set, yet above the Prestige recordings set.

This is some fine, fine music and a great starting point for those looking to explore Coltrane's musical legacy.

Most rap producers and their Roland keyboard mama's wish they could ply their verbal wares on the mic, while their emcee counterparts often jones to twiddle a knob or two (or 24). So what happens when two of rap's most renegade producers flip rhymes over each other's beats for a full album? For starters, you get a whole heap of possibilities as to where hip hop can go sonically. On the Madlib-laced "The Official," the distorted bass lines and grimy drums are sure to make the jiggy, jaded, and conscious bob their head unremittingly. While Jay Dee (Dilla) rhetorically raps "and who says producers ain't s'posed to rap?" on "The Mission," he doesn't exactly do a great job disproving this theory on "Heavy" or "Mcnasty Filth" alongside his more talented Motown protégés Frank and Dank. Madlib is arguably the better emcee of the two, but not by much, as he's just had more time to practice honing his mic skill with his numerous alter egos like the helium-voiced Quasimoto who appears on "Re act." Beats-wise, the album is borderline first-rate as Madlib and Dilla appear to be digging heavily in the Classical Indian music crates for inspiration. The sounds of Bollywood (Bolly'hood?) weave their way in and out of the title track and "Survival Test." No one wants to hear an album mostly filled with half-baked boasts and largely forgettable tales of female seduction. Thus, conceptually this dream project would have been even dreamier if they had enlisted the talents of Mos Def, Black Thought, or Pharoahe Monch. Yes, the sounds are of a champion, but the rhymes are more like the Los Angeles Clippers. --Dalton Higgins

Hey, Red Ant-I dont know what hood UR from but you better check your ears for excess wax-kid. I agree this album aint that great and I agree on your selections but YO! how did you not like "Nasty Mcfilth"? Ya'll betta do your homework and dig deep cause that shhhh right there is fire. The beat is sick and J.Ds flow is crazy on this joint. My opion, "Nasty Mcfilth" is the illest track on the album. You betta listen again. R.I.P J-Dilla, your a god with the beats, definitely up there with Primo,Pete Rock and the rest. OUT!

2 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2006-05-11

Wow, I was really disappointed with this album.
Unfortunately, Dilla (R.I.P.) can't rap. Production, hell yeah, he can really bring the noise, but he can't rap well at all. Madlib is a decent rapper, but again, not that good. The production sounds like mainstream gangsta rap on 75% of the tracks, and that is NEVER good. Just not a good album overall, but there are a couple songs worth listening to. I would pass on this one if I were you.

5 out of 5 stars The album title says it all.......2006-04-01

I'm gonna get right to the point, This CD is amazing. It is a CD put together by two producers, so everyone saying how bad the lyrics are, its not really about the lyrics. The Beats are sick, nuff said. This CD, production wise, blows anything away. No matter what kind of Rap/Hiphop fan you are, I'm sure you will like this CD. But I do have to say this CD has grown on me, if you are a first time listener, be aware. It could give you a weird vibe at first. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars R.I.P. Dilla, If you want ill Beats, and dope rhymes cop it!!!.......2006-02-22

First off iv'e been seeing lots of negative vibes twords this album.Real "reconize" real. And Dilla and Lib Are definatly real. These beats are so good you can really hear Lib hittin those drums hard. This is true hip hop not that lolipop garbage that you hear on Hot97. I usually pick out the best tracks but for "Champion Sound" you really don't need to. The whole album is dope!

4 out of 5 stars Piggy Back.......2005-12-08

Im so late on this because i was just surfin around and saw people, who seem to be down with the BBE/ST movement, dissin this album. WTF!!! Are u that ignorant that u cant see that these are two of the best producers in the " real Game " havin some fun. These cats got together and was like yo, u hot, im hot, lets make it hot. Mcnasty filth was one of the hottest songs performed live at the shows ive been to. And the official is beyond hot. Yall who dissin this album need to stop tryin to get a job with the SOURCE and come back to the real hip hop. its LOVE. and my man who said to pick up that j-88. 4 out of 5 stars Blues from the Gutter, by Champion Jack Dupree.......2007-06-27

This is an excellent record, probably the best from Champion Jack Dupree. I would hesitate to call it a pure blues record, since many of the tracks do not qualify as blues (e.g. Frankie & Johnny, Stack O Lee) but the mixture is well chosen. His version of "TB Blues" is the best I have heard since Big Joe Williams. If you break down the tracks into components, they may not appear sensational: the musicians are OK, but not sensational, Dupree's voice is OK, but not sensational, etc. but here everything works out and the shortcomings are barely noticeable. They probably recorded what they had at the time, which was not much (only 10 tracks) and the record is on the short side for modern CD's. Nontheless: it can be stronly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Blues From The Gutter is as good as it gets.......2005-12-17

I've been listening to blues for 40 years. When I heard this about 5 years ago I thought "This is how it sounds when they get it right". It's difficult to capture the delicate interplay of a blues combo made up of highly professional players. The liner notes on this are superb, and they explain Champion Jack's very early tutelage under a blues player born in the mid 19th century. Get this album and enjoy the finest blues you can hear.

5 out of 5 stars Yeah, this is a good one.......2005-11-02

I heard Champion Jack first on WWOZ New Orleans and nibbled on this CD. I love good barrelhouse piano and there is not a weak track on the disk. With guitar in places, sax in places, both in places, and they blend well. Like a good club set.

On to the next ....

5 out of 5 stars Immortal music from the master.......2002-01-14

Hey blues piano lover, I really think you should get hold of ALL of Champion Jack Dupree's recordings! Failing that, make absolutely certain you get this one - buy, beg, borrow, or steal.

Recorded as a stereo album in 1958 in New York, Jack never sounded better, backed here by a small group including sax and electric guitar. Every track is memorable: Strollin' - "All you got to do is put one foot in front of the other!"; Can't Kick The Habit; Junker Blues (revisited from 1944 original); Nasty Boogie (it is!); Stack-O-Lee - "Stack-O-Lee, shot Billy De Lyon; and he shot him two or three times".

It was just after this recording that Jack decamped to Europe for many years, recording many sides especially with with John Mayall, until his triumphant return "back home to New Orleans" in the late 1980s.

Only drawback is short playing time (37:17) but with quality like this... just play it again! I have twice given my copy away when I wanted to give someone a single blues CD - the music is accessible to all, and at the same time it's as blues as blues can be.

Bonnie Rideout is an American who has mastered the art of Scottish fiddling. Scottish Fire is a selection of tunes that cover almost the entire range of traditional Caledonian music. There are marches, complete with bagpipes and drums, dance tunes of every variety, including reels, strathspeys, waltzes, hornpipes, and slow airs. Rideout plays them all with equal facility but she really shines on the unaccompanied slow selections like the heartbreaking "Lude's Lament." The instrumentation includes the now standard guitar, cittern, and bodhrán, as well as the more unusual viola da gamba. As on her previous releases such as Soft May Morn and Celtic Circles, Rideout has unearthed tunes from old manuscript collections in Scotland. Many of these melodies haven't been heard for centuries and Rideout has done us all a favor by bringing them back to life. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Prolific recording artist who respects the tradition while keeping it fresh........2007-07-20

An American musician who does the Scottish fiddle tradition proud -- Bonnie Rideout delivers. This album delivers the whole package -- the lyricism of Alasdair Fraser, the drive of Natalie MacMaster, and the eclecticism of Capercaillie (the more roots-oriented of their work) -- this is a great album.

Great movement in the music; enjoyable recording but would be better as a studio recording in lieu of a concert with player and audience ad hoc vocals.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2005-08-09

I bought this cd for background music for my wedding reception. The wedding and reception was at a Scottish style Inn in North Carolina, and, after listening to the music samples, I thought it would be perfect. I liked it because not only is the woman extremely talented, but because it is engaging and unobtrusive, and it does not sound like your typical discount rack Celtic music. I listened to a lot of music, searching for just the right thing, and this was simply the best. This woman has real talent!

5 out of 5 stars What you waiting for??....a written invitation?? (buy it already!!!).......2007-04-03

A 40 minute EP, that has so many five-star reviews??...can this be right??.....judging by my own listen through of this tremendous EP, the reviews are spot-on. `Brother Ali' (a verbally hard-hitting devout practising Muslim), is armed with a collection of strong views on the worlds state of affairs, and his place in society in general, Forget Gangster posturing, or tales of getting paid and laid, or even dissing other rappers with amusing put-downs....what Brother Ali deals in, is the world around us, and our relatively low placing in amongst it. Everything taken into account, digested, examined, and outputted in a staggeringly complexity, and pinpoint articulation that seems beyond his years. All delivered with a self-awareness and compellingly assertive manner, that grips the attention, with his ability to crack open common conception/perception, and shine a spotlight on it, for all to see.

There's a strength in his conviction that makes for a thrilling listen, and if anyone is disenchanted with hip-hop's fascination with all things material, and that hip-hop hasn't had anything interesting to say for years. Then they could do well to give this disk a spin. Lyrically things are intense, confrontational and treading that fine line between slightly aggressive and mostly angry. But ironically on the flipside, it's impressively literate, and confident, and thinks with its mind, instead of its fists....with a deep understanding of the subject matter, and able to deliver in a way, that doesn't lump this in with hundreds of generic rappers, that think relentless rage, equals meaningful expression. (kind of like the Way "Public Enemy's - Chuck D", was aggressive, but in possession of the facts, and well-read, and thus made you think, about what he had to say...).

So you might be surprised to hear that the production backing Brother Ali's lyrics, isn't bass heavy, thudding beats, designed to shake the walls of a nightclub, but actually sounds like it favours, sampling, beat arrangements, that are relatively spacious, and touch upon the more melodic end soul/R&B grooves, that blend soul, blues and jazz, to create a surprisingly laid-back vibe. (Courtesy of "Atmosphere"), and makes for acutely different listening experience, having the rapid-fire delivery of Brother Ail, work alongside some of the relatively smooth hip-hop/Soul backing tracks, that are sparse enough to allow Brother Ali, to let loose, with the minimal of interruption.

For an EP that is 40 minutes long, this is truly remarkable stuff....I bought this EP and it's full length predecessor "Shadows of the Sun" (which I have yet to listen to), at the same time, and I've (Bizarrely) stuck this EP of my first listening experience of Brother Ali, and whilst listening to it, I was just wowed by his stunning ability to lay this all down on record, and express a level of consciousness, and ability of Weaving intricate stories, that is staggering in many places. Yeah!!...I know loads of people boast how music such as this, is a million miles away from the garbage you hear on T.V. & Radio, and how this is `Real' Hip-Hop (whatever that is...), but the fact is, they are right!!, this is so far ahead of what's out there, that it ceases to be funny. In fact one of the very few criticisms, I could TRY and dig up, to try and give this a (relatively) balanced review, is by saying that Brother Ali, seems to lack even the occasional sense of humour, and he may have a certain bias through his Muslim beliefs. But who cares??...this is one of the most brilliantly written, and impressively crafted hip-hop albums in recent years, and it's less concerned with sounding good, whilst your rolling in your ride, and more interested in making you think, long after you've removed the CD, from your CD Player (although that's months later, for some of you). Whether your into thinking man's Hip-Hop, Indie Hip-Hop, or you just wanna listen to hip-hop that isn't concerned with dumbing down the music/message, in an effort to get regular MTV rotation (poor MTV, they really do come in for a verbal bashing, in Amazon reviews don't they??), then it's time to open your wallet (or purse), and make the purchase, for one of hip-hop's most sorely underrated acts.

5 out of 5 stars Minneapolis Hip-Hop takes over!.......2006-02-21

5 out of 5 stars Please Take A Moment And Listen To This Brother Preach.......2005-10-13

Brother Ali's EP Champion is that non stop boom bap sound that listeners have been longing for. Produced by Ant(Atmosphere) and executive produced by Slug(Atmosphere). Ali has a diverse background being of Muslim faith and being Albino(which Ali speaks about from time to time and the struggle of being a Muslim albino that he has had to face while growing up), only makes Ali's heartfelt lyrics a dominant force in hip hop. My favorite cut off this album would have to be "Rain Water" an ear filling track mixed with a little soul and hip hop and Ali speaking to listeners about going through life's everyday obstacles. Another great release off the Rhymesayers label and solidifying it's place among hip hop's finest.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-08

This CD is one of the best cd's you can spend your money on, the thing i like about it the most is that he is true and real, not like all the rappers around today that talk about NOTHING!! I dont know how i found his music but he is one of my faviorites and i hope he can make more cd's soon. Final Thoughts: If you wanna hear the best hip hip rapper (in my eyes) then listen to this cd.

5 out of 5 stars I'm feeling this the most at the moment, REAL hip hop.......2005-06-17

This is an excellent album. Ali has some nice beats and rhymes real life, i respect him a lot. He keeps to the original basics of hip hop and uses his own style and content. He is a wise man who is deep and keeps everything in the light and rhymes truth only. A good poet that keeps hip hop alive today and lets us know it's not going away yet. Respect! Ali boombaye!

This title isn't just a joke. It makes the valid point that these Renaissance pieces occupied the same place in their culture as our pop music does in ours. People whistled these tunes in the street and danced to them at night, and you can easily accept the disc's title when hearing the Baltimore Consort's extremely lively performances, which have all the rhythmic drive and gusto of a good rock band. The ensemble's arrangements and the variety of its programming also contribute to the success of this disc, which would make an excellent introduction to music of the period. The booklet contains translations of all the vocal texts, and Dorian's sound leaps out of the loudspeakers with great clarity and presence. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars My favorite + audiophile recording.......2005-05-26

I've attended Baltimore Consort performances a number of times, and they are just about my favorite early music group. They do an outstanding job of making "old" music come alive. Sometimes early music recordings are dry and academic, and the Baltimore Consort is as far from that as you can get. Finally, they have a great since of humor, which often peaks through in their music.

They specialize in popular secular tunes of the age. Their playing is impeccable, and most of the group are accomplished soloists. La Rocque 'n' Roll is probably my favorite recording of theirs, the songs are fun, interesting, and involving. The best of the best...

The fact that the recording is technically very good is a nice bonus. As a matter of fact, "Jean de Nivelle" (track 26) is the first thing I play when evaluating speakers. It helps that I've heard the performance live (and unamplified), so I have a real life comparison. The recoding clearly captures the nuances of the individual instruments. Although obviously not as loud as modern rock, the recording still gives challenges speaker dynamics. Unlike some gee whiz audiophile recordings, I can listen to these songs again and again.

5 out of 5 stars absolute favorite .......2004-10-16

I've been collecting renaissance/medieval music for several years and have finally found something that sounds as though the musicians are actually having FUN with the repertoire. This is a blast, I recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Fun stuff!.......2002-11-29

The jaunty, whimsical tone of this CD is set by the opening bars of the first piece, "J'ai vu le loup," which starts out with one of the musicians shouting "Un! Dieux!" Many parallels are subtly drawn between the secular music of Renaissance France and popular music of today. "The appeal of performing 'popular' repertory lies in the opportunity it provides for creative expression," explains the insert booklet. "All of the song and dance arrangements on this CD are the creation of the members of the Baltimore Consort, who sometimes only have an unharmonized melody to start with..." What they may lack in specific direction from the long-dead song writers, they more than make up for with catchy arrangements and spirited improvisations. Soprano Custer LaRue sings her sultry French lyrics with relish and gusto, and the addition of reedy crumhorns and bagpipes played by Chris Norman and Mark Cudek adds to the provincial French flavor. The fun of the music is echoed in the CD's amusing packaging: The album cover, somewhat reminiscent of the Beatles' "Abbey Road", features the ensemble members walking along in single file, with their viol and lute cases in hand. Other interior pictures of the group poke fun at other folk and rock imagery, including one shot of a gentleman in shades licking the neck of his bass viol. Not exactly the norm for early music releases, but refreshing for just that reason. Rocque on!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect album.......2000-02-22

This is my favorite CD of all time. I've had it now for five years, I listen to it all the time, and I never get tired of it. Every track is enormously beautiful, from the bright and sunny tunes through the quieter and more melancholy ones.

This is a CD that sounds perfect in the early morning, late at night, or any other time of day.

I've become a huge fan of the Baltimore Consort (one of the highlights of my life was seeing the group perform the songs on this album live at Synod Hall in Pittsburgh, PA) and "La Rocque 'n' Roll" is their "Sgt. Pepper."

5 out of 5 stars If Led Zeppelin had been born 400 years earlier..........1999-10-02

...and played the lute, they would've played like Ron McFarlane, and sang like Custer LaRue. Wonderful performances of 16th C popular music on historical instruments, with lovely twists of rock'n'roll performance techniques. Check out the jazzy krummhorn glissandos, the sexy lute strumming, the straight-ahead power vocal, and the hip plucked bass viol -- especially on the last track. This is my #1 "Desert Island Disk."
