The drifting chords and soft voice are still in place, only now Johnson's instinct for melody has sharpened alongside his ability to self-edit. These small concessions make third album, In Between Dreams, his most conspicuous, particularly on tracks like the three-minute relationship drama, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," and "Breakdown," a song he originally recorded for Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People album remade here to reveal its full stripped-down loveliness. Typically, an artist seeks to broaden their talent and explore new horizons. With Jack Johnson, he's satisfied to produce the same songs over and over and over and over. If you'd like to hear all the same catchy riffs ad nauseum, buy all of Jack Johnson's albums. Or just buy one, since they're all the same.

I have to say, I own Brushfire Fairytales and On and On, also, but this album is my favorite so far. I love the flow of the songs, love the songs he wrote as well as the ones written by his friends, and love the delivery. "Banana Pancakes" is just about my favorite JJ track of all. I highly recommend this album.

I absolutely love this album. Jack and boys sound sooooo good. Like I said above, it sounds like a Friday night feels...just plain good and mellow and happy. Beautifully simple melodies and refrains, just not so simple that they aren't fabulous. Jack's voice is just so smooth and lovely. The vocals are right up front and sound so clear. I love the guitar riffs on this album. In Between Dreams is like grown-up lullabies. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this album. My fave tracks are Breakdown, Never Know, Better Together, Sitting Waiting Wishing, Do You Remember, Constellations...see how much I love this album? Can't even choose a fave.

This CD is one of my favorite CD's ever! Every time I here the song 'Better Together' I cry. The first time I heard this song I was driving in the car with my brother and he played it for me in his first car for the first time. It was a special moment for me and I'll never forget that moment in my life. My favorite song would have to be 'Never Know' because I heard it sitting on a fairy-boat ride coming home from CIMI with my class of friends and I was sitting next to my boyfriend listening to that wonderful song. It lulled me to sleep and let my mind rest and be at ease. I will also never forget how much it helped me forget all present things and just let me have some 'me time' as I fell asleep. I know I am being redundant but trust me, it was wonderful. I would highly recommend this CD to you. Also Jack Johnson's voice is relxing and very unique. I have nobody to compare him to. If you end up buying this CD then I hope you enjoy this as much as I did and am.

The Stones began their transitional period, from reinvigorating R&B standards (on their early albums) to reinventing rock & roll (on the brilliant four-album streak beginning with Beggars Banquet), on this underrated 1967 collection. Even the songs that didn't become smash hits, such as the speed demon "Miss Amanda Jones" and the honky-tonking "She Smiled Sweetly," are more than curiosities despite experimental touches with organ, sitar, and kazoo. Mick Jagger proves, on the psychedelic "Yesterday's Papers" and "Ruby Tuesday," that he can sing a sexy ballad even if he's incapable of crooning. The Rolling Stones-Between The Buttons ****


Between The Buttons is far from the classic Rolling Stones album it is hyped up to be. If Mick Jagger's voice wasnt so recognizable in the rock n' roll world then you would never know that this was in fact the same Rolling Stones who brought the world such classics as 'Street Fghting Man' and 'Love Is Strong.' The sound is nothing like any other Stones album. The production is not bad by any means but stands out once again because it is nothing like the bands other albums.

The only noticable thing about this album to give a clue as to the Rolling Stones being the culprets is Charlie Watts' drumming, and thats just because that is his signature the way he plays. The guitar here is minimal compared to other Stones albums and when it is audible it hardly sounds like Keith Richards and Brian Jones is hardly audible through out the entire album. That not to say that when you hear them it isnt good because it is fantastic, after all it is Brian Jones and Keith Richards. Bill Wymans bass is very prominant and he plays some of his best lines ever on Between The Buttons.

Songs like the killer opener and forever classic 'Lets Spend The Night Together' so hints of a band the world knows. The undeniable ballad 'Ruby Tuesday' is melt in your mouth good. 'My Obbsession' is maybe the best song on the album. The musicianship is phenonmonal by the entire band, the lyrics are shines of brilliance and Micks vocal delivery is classic. 'All Sold Out' is a great hard rocker with nice 'doo-doo-doos' in the back ground and some impressive slide guitar work from Jones. 'Connection' is reminicent to 'Satisfaction' while 'Yesterdays Papers' is touching as anything the band ever wrote. The only throw away track on the album is the closer. 'Something Happand To Me Yesterday' is fun but most of the time annoying. It has tuba as a main instrument which brings to mind memories of the Lou Reed album Transformer, or maybe more so Berlin... The point is this song is not worthy of The Rolling Stones.

So when it comes down to it, Between The Buttons is a four star album. Not because it is perticularly ground breaking or amazing or anything like that because it is nither, but because Keith, Mick, Bill, Charlie, and Brian all mangaged to make an album sounding nothing like themselves and totally reinvent their sound for this one album and pull it off perfectly. This is something they tried again on Emotional Rescue, Black And Blue, and most horrendously on Their Satanic Majistys Request and each other time failed in compassion to Between The Buttons.

Hardly a masterpiece, but a lotta fun nonetheless -- "Let's Spend the Night Together", "Ruby Tuesday", "Connection", and my favorite misogynist guilty pleasure "Yesterday's Papers". The remastering also hardly replicates the warm sound of the original London/Decca LP, but I suppose one can't have everything.

This is an all-around good album with a lot of variety - the only thing it's missing is a good blues number. Still has one of my favorite Stones ballads in "Ruby Tuesday", a wonderful song thanks to Brian Jones' recorder; and the energetic, piano-driven (not to mention controversial, thanks to the Ed Sullivan incident - of course, by today's standards, the song is tame) "Let's Spend the Night Together", which is even better. Mostly this is on the mellow side of things, as songs like "She Smiled Sweetly" and "Miss Amanda Jones" show, and show nicely, but the more energetic songs ("Connection", "Cool, Calm and Collected", "All Sold Out") also stand out. There are a few missteps, though. In the Stones' effort to cover as much new ground as possible, they went took some weird roads all right - some that would've best been left unexplored. Like the goofy vaudeville music hall send-up "Something Happened to Me Yesterday" and "Who's Been Sleeping Here?", which tries (and fails) for Dylanesque humor. Those aside, this is fun, varied, loopy and distinct, this stands out as one of their better early albums. If you (like me) buy into the romanticized image of the Brits as charming, eccentric, polite, intelligent, wealthy tea-drinking chaps (rather than the Anglophobic image, which portrays them as loud, crude, profane, stupid, dirt-poor beer-drinking gits who call that wussy sport "soccer" - and hey, soccer is a wussy sport- "football"), you may enjoy this album, because it's the most British they ever got. Between the Buttons ties with Aftermath as the furthest the Stones ever got away from their roots (blues-rock with tinges of soul and country) and still managed to make very entertaining music. Highly recommended!

Something Happened to Me Yesterday is a unique piece too.

On the whole it's a unique sounding CD of The Rolling Stones that I recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing Pop From An Often Harder Group.......2007-07-04

This is a scrappy, on-the-go album from Jan '67 that feels like some other band's, the Kinks, say, and fits writer Philip Norman's description of it as "a vaudeville show echoing in a nearly empty hall." But just because that vaudeville was to play to a greater acclaim six months later on Sgt. Pepper's doesn't make parts of it any less valid.
You get the two-sided timelessness of "Let's Spend The Night"/"Ruby Tuesday," plus "She Smiled Sweetly" (rediscovered in the movie "The Royal Tennenbaums") that gently glides along Keith's organ work, and "Cool, Calm, Collected," (Brian sitar work should be voted most original ever!) the music hall ambience of which, along with the similar closer "Something Happened To Me Yesterday," probably percolated in the Beatles' heads as they worked that winter in Abbey Road. There's also "Who's Been Sleeping Here" with its Dylanish beauty, and the infectious "Connection" (Stones outBeatle the Beatles!), which predicts the drug inspections that would harass them unceasingly.
"My Obsession" sucks, "Yesterday's Papers" just okay, and "Amanda Jones" is a Chuck Berry vamp taking a nauseating turn, but the rest is well worth owning. They would never sound so convincingly pop again...

Mary Chapin Carpenter's first album of new material in three years has been hailed as a fine example of pop music for adults. This is both true and misleading. In changing producers (from John Jennings to celebrated piano man Matt Rollings), the literate singer-songwriter has slightly broadened her sophisticated Americana sound, and although it's less rhythmic as a whole, her acoustic-folkie approach remains at the core of her classic style. And while "Between Here and Gone"--which addresses the theme of travel and transition, the fragility of life, and the ephemeral nature of happiness--might be said to concern itself with grown-up issues, most of Carpenter's writing has always done just that. Yet this stunning album, informed both by her 2002 marriage ("Elysium," "River") and by the events of 9/11, is more introspective than much of her early work. The alto-voiced singer is compelling throughout, but never so much as on "My Heaven," inspired by Alice Sebold's novel, The Lovely Bones, or on "Grand Central Station," in which a New York City ironworker, standing on the bucket brigade at Ground Zero, hears the voices of the dead, desperate to find their way home. In moments such as these, Carpenter reestablishes herself not only as a world-class poet, but as an artist of the first order. --Alanna Nash

If you are the MCC fan of songs such as "A Town" and "10,000 Miles", as I am, then welcome to Carpenter bliss! No rock-a-billy here, thankfully. Carpenter delivers a slew of music on "Between" for rainy, chilly and fog-filled nights. The mournful strings and piano are a perfect accompaniment for her soothing vocals. The opening track is as fast as this chanteuse is willing to go. From there on it's slow motion. She does pick up a bit again with "Beautiful Racket".

"Girls Like Me" is a chilling description of the power of simplicity and how we often overlook the no frills people in our lives for the more flashy. Carpenter seems to be saying she's done with "flash". Brava. Also wonderful are "Grand Central Station" and "The Shelter of Storms" - just Mary, an instrument or two and tons of soul. Simply wonderful.

"Find Your Wings" is a great song for a new graduate. It speaks to the leaving the nest that is so very hard for both parent and child, but so rewarding, as well.

I love this album! I listen to it at work, it keeps me grounded. I believe God speaks to each of us daily. I know He speaks to me through Mark's music. I believe Mark Harris will go far with his solo career. I for one will look for any new album he has.

I am a big fan of 4HIM. I last saw them on a cruise in 2005 and they announced then that they would be heading off into solo careers.

When my wife and I first heard FIND YOUR WINGS, we were touched by the great lyrics and thought of our daughter. However, after hearing a few more songs, we became annoyed with his voice after a while. He doesn't seem to have much range and without the others from 4HIM blending in as they often did so well, you can easily get tired of his voice.

That isn't to put a damper on the quality of the lyrics and music, but I feel that the 4HIM guys will always sound better together than as soloists.

This artist was recommended to me by Jim Brickman. For someone who is looking for a nice, relaxing sound from songs with a Christian basis this is a great choice. I especially like "Find Your Wings" which is a song about raising children and hoping what you've wished for them as they grow up and become adults.

Two songs on this CD really hit home for me. I was going to watch my son high jump at the league championship and heard, "Find Your Wings" on the radio and I cried and God spoke to me and told me he was going to give him wings that day to win. Praise God, he blessed his life that day with a victory to encourage him! My father who was a true lover of the Lord passed away and when I heard the song, "Wish You Were Here," I knew that my Dad was enjoying Heaven and being with Jesus and I will be with him someday!

    April, 1992. This ablum blends in with the fabric of my memories for that time. I remember it was a beautiful spring that year, and I was looking out over a field of desert wildflowers, with these songs in my head. I remember making love that night to my then girlfriend behind a bush in the park. I remember learning many of these songs and playing them with my friends in bedrooms and garages. Every time I hear "Bad luck" kick in today, I still am filled with the most awsome feeling inside.
    This is great, honest, no-frills rock. One of the things I like most about it is the somewhat limited vocal capabilities of the songwriter--he's one of those that has a great song but can only sing it "the best he can", which is great because it keeps things honest, real, and full of true feeling

    This album perfects the rockabilly sound that the band began with "Prison Bound" and "Social Distortion". It is definately the most country influenced album that they have ever released but it still holds on to their punk roots. Still, it is an incredible difference from "Mommy's Little Monster". If you are a fan of that album, this is a bit of a 180.

    I would agree that this is their most "complete" album. This album contains little to no filler material. It can easily be listened to from front to back. The real standout songs on this album are...

    Lightlly naive in some lyrics but musically admirable, this SD CD is the best frontal entrance gate to one of the finest musical cocktails prepared with a mixture of blues, rockabilly, seventies punk and even some gospel. Lovelly violent and charming.

    This is easily their best record--others will argue that it's the self-titled, or "white light..," but this is it. All of the promise found on Prison Bound and the self-titled is realized here. Unlike the earlier records, there's no filler (Drug Train anyone?) to be found here at all. It's just a solid rock album. Yeah, this is easily their best. It's just a solid, mature record all the way through, and the groovy bonus track makes it even better. I love the distorted vocals on that last tune....

    After the self-released Somedays and Twentythree Places, Nashville's Matt Wertz signed up with a proper label for Everything in Between. On his third full-length, the Missouri-bred troubadour mixes pop, folk, and blues into an easygoing, yet ebullient sound. As he exults on "The Way I Feel," "Everything inside of me is singin' out." You can hear Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and if you listen really closely, even Michael Jackson, circa Off the Wall, in Wertz's soulful voice (see "Naturally" for proof). Not too surprisingly, Wertz claims all three as influences, along with James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and Hall & Oates. Interestingly, he also cites the seriously un-cool Doobie Brothers and Toto, but the lack of pretension is refreshing. Aside from "The Way I Feel," the propulsive "Heartbreaker," which evokes the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love," is another catchy tune that deserves a lot of airplay. The other selections may be less memorable, but there are no real clunkers. Matt Wertz doesn't have the most original sound and he seems to be rather risk-averse at this point in his career, but the singer/songwriter has an appealing style. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Ever since my roommate went to a Matt Wertz concert and made me listen to this CD, I've been hooked. Now I've seen him perform twice and I listen to these songs over and over all the time. My favorites are "5:19," - who hasn't been waiting for a phone call? - and "Carolina," but "The Way I Feel" and "Heartbreaker" are really fun, too, and... well... I love them all! Get this CD and give Matt a chance - and definitely catch one of his shows if he comes to town.

    It is rare to listen to a new cd for the first time and immediately love every single song! Matt is as refreshing as they come. It's evident he puts his heart and soul into writing his music and we're treated to a beautifully honest performance in the end.

    ALO, or Animal Liberation Orchestra, sound like a bunch of hippies. These hippies are totally cool!

    This is a surprisingly good CD. It's a re-release now on Jack Johnson's Brushfire label, so you know it's good. Jack even guests on the second track.

    The music is very chill and laidback, but a little more uptempo than Jack Johnson. It has a little funky groove to it.

    Although it does have some rather stupid lyrics at times, the music more than makes up for it. This is a really cool cd, perfect for hanging out. Recommended.

    1975's finest. Perhaps one up- or mid-tempo tune short of an all-the-way (explosion, fireworks) masterpiece (that closing track is a touch maudlin), Between The Lines nevertheless blows out Ian's nearest "rivals" (Carole King, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks and, dare I say, Paul Simon) and makes a serious claim for one of the 70's preeminent essential LP artifacts.

    The success here, I believe, is that Ian (already a songwriting master by '69) keeps the chords simple enough to let her mesmerizing blasts of lyrical wisdom run their course. And there is sagacity, however embittered, on every track. The arrangements are smart, providing properly discreet shading to Ian's soul-inflected folk (and, occasionally)cabaret musings.

    Ian sings a mean, low-key revelation. Even when her lyrical and sonic milieu is the tawdry dancehall ("Bright Lights and Promises"), she never showboats. Ian has the inspired ice of Peggy Lee. "The Come On," a deeply dire meditation on cheap love and low esteem, never lapses into sobbing gymnastics. Ian just delivers the bad news like an X-ray. Perfect every time.

    There is a fiber-optic perfection to Ian's poetic observations. Male radio programmers and DJs were compelled by burning telephone lines, not market imperatives, to air "At Seventeen" - a startling runaway hit (prefiguring the later, bolder success of Suzanne Vega's "Luka"). It was simply heavy lasers set to kill. Ian didn't hit the mark, she expunged it.

    One of the best voices God ever created. A mix of rock and easy listening to words and music you can understand. Every line connects with the very core of every human being that listens to her. Janis Ian is a true voice in the music industry.

    Some of Janis Ian's wordplay could make a bad poet blush. Take this line from her adolescent hell signature song, "At Seventeen", a tune betrayed by this bizarre description of teenage alienation, "Their small town eyes will gape at you, (gaping eyes?), in dull surprise when payment due, succeeds accounts received at seventeen". How's that, a teenage accountant? Or this from, "Tea and Sympathy", "Pass the tea and sympathy, for the good old days are long gone, we'll drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won." Never have I wanted to drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won. But just when you want to file these feminist minded, man-eating compositions under aimless testements, Ian slam bangs the finish with two monumental orchestrated numbers questioning the choice between laying down to the death of a lifetime with your lover, or the freedom artistic pursuit and single-hood can offer, making all her previous meandering diatribes sound meaningful. Here the album stands up and says hello, and the crescendoing climax calls you back for another listen. Some nice touches here and there as well, including a brooding cello solo at the end of, "Water Colors".

    Don't get me wrong.I don't hate emo. But emo is too emo for me. If there is such thing as good emo, Between the Trees' music would be one of them. Their album, the Story and the Song, is beautiful beyond words. Lyrically refreshing and easy to relate to. What could you ask from a band? Unlike many of their contemporaries, Between the Trees is a band with hope and purpose.Soulful voice of the main singer is strikingly similar to Fall Out Boy and Academy Is. Honestly though, Between the Trees' main singer is better voice than these two bands that I have mentioned though. With thousands of emo wanna be in the market, it is hard to find a band original and inspiring as Between the Trees.

    Strongly recommended for the fans of Relient K, Emery, Academy Is, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Sherwood, and Mae.

    I was listening to a big playlist of (legally) downloaded music while trying to take a nap. Twice I heard songs that sounded awesome that I didn't recognize so I got up to check who sang them. In both cases it turned out to be Between the Trees.

    There is a nice mix of upbeat and slow pop/rock songs with a healthy dose of emo without falling into the trap of sounding like the slew of identical sounding pop/rock or emo bands.

    Just don't let the first time you give them a listen be while trying to take a nap- you might not get much sleep.
