Run-D.M.C. [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The electronic boom-and-clank that marked Run-D.M.C.'s 1983 debut single, "It's Like That," expanded to album length early the next year. Still one of the genre's most entertaining long-players--and undergoing something of a renaissance thanks to Jason Nevins's remix of "It's Like That"--Run-D.M.C. showcased two rambunctious voices working at the top of their game (and their lungs), finishing each other's sentences and laying waste to sucker MCs, all over a minimal pulse: the sound of the first new school of hip-hop. Some peaks: Rock Box, a fierce introduction to their rock/rap fusion, and "Wake Up," a fantasy in which Ronald Reagan is spotted at a concert by our heroes. It was a dream, they admitted. But Run, D.M.C., and turntable king Jam Master Jay took it to the world. --Rickey Wright

Is Run-DMC the most important group of the past 25 years? Well, if you believe that the rise of hip-hop is the most significant musical development in a quarter century, what other conclusion can you draw? Though they may not have been responsible for the birth of rap, the Hollis, Queens, trio represents the genre's coming of age. They were the ones who brought what was largely a regional street phenomenon to the masses. The rhymes, the beats, the style, the attitude--Run-DMC introduced it all to the world. Focusing mostly on the group's first three albums--each of them a cornerstone of rap music--this 18-track collection is a reminder of a time when rap enjoyed a kind of childlike innocence: their boasts are forceful but not angry; the beats are simple but exciting; the overall effect (fueled by heavy-metal riffs) is edgy and aggressive, but not violent or destructive. But most of all, it's fun. In the 1990s, rap artists would take Run-DMC's ideas to wide extremes, but the roots of this next generation--gangsta rap's street realism, political rap's social agendas, rock-rap's antagonism--are found right here. Run-DMC--like almost all pioneers from Elvis to Louis Armstrong--suffered a period of irrelevancy when they were looked upon as quaint or outdated, but, their time will come. Rest assured, this is not '80s retro kitsch. --Marc Greilsamer

Running on a full tank.......2007-07-24
Run DMC seems a bit dated in a way, an artifact of the 80s, but that might be a good thing. Their raps are free of the celebration of anti-social behavior that's found in a lot of current rap. It's not sissy stuff, but you can listen to it without worrying if children are around. Their stuff has a heavy beat to it, it's kind of like rap/rock. Maybe that's a big part of why they had significant appeal to white kids and broadened the audience of rap. Indeed, Run DMC is one of the lead rap groups ever, largely because they were instrumental in taking rap mainstream. I'm an 80s white kid, and these guys are some of the first rappers I remember listening to. One criticism might be that a lot of the raps sound the same, at least as far as the beat goes. The raps are usually pretty fun and sometimes humorous. Like I said, it's stuff you can listen to "in the open." With over an hour of raps, this is a good buy, especially for those looking for some 80s culture.
The Absolute Kings of Rock.......2007-05-25
First, thoughts and prayers to JMJ's family and friends. RIP JMJ. This is a great introduction to the best hip hop, rap or whatever label you want prefer. I can remember the Metal Head's in high school (circa mid 80's) blasting this and that was unheard of in my little town. Run DMC is the most influential group in the last quarter century period. They bring back so many memories and they were one of the first rap groups I ever heard and was hooked. I think 99% of todays "rap" or "hip hop" artists or whatever you want to call them, suck. Listen to this and then listen to something from one of todays rap "stars" and try to argue that rap has really gone downhill in the last 5 to 10 years IMHO.
Run DMC - Greatest Hits.......2007-01-10
Really good that an album like this came out. A bunch of Run DMC classics on one cd. Run DMC set a standard style for Hip-Hop and theyll be remembered for doing so.
The production on this album is just crazy. That old school sound that sounds perfect on these songs. This album has 18 tracks, all classic RUN DMC songs. But back to the production, most of the beats are insanely dope. If you like old school hip-hop then youll love all these beats. Some beats that are standouts are.. "Its Tricky", "Beats To The Rhyme" (Love this beat), "Peter Piper", "You Be Illin", "Its Like That", "Sucker MC's", "Jam Master Jay" (RIP). These beats are top-notch and keep that real hiphop old school sound to it.
The lyrics are also good, just your typical old school hip-hop. I recommend this album to any Run DMC fans of course, and anyone who appreciates real hip-hop and old school hip-hop.
My Top 5 Songs
1.Its Tricky
2.Beats To Rhyme
3.Peter Piper
4.Sucker MC's
5.Jam Master Jay (R.I.P)
white guy review of the cd.......2006-12-25
Run DMC hold a special place in my heart since they introduced and convinced me that rap deserves to be considered an aspect of music no different than rock , folk, etc.
There materials worked, at the time, because of the "cross over" nature of their songs. They injected a true rock sensibility into their raps. I wish more artists today would utilize guitars and real drums when rapping.
When you listen to this, the main theme of the music is FUN. This is roll down the windows, crank it up, sing along, songs.
The best songs are the ones that incorporate rock structure and pop culture. "Its Tricky", "Can you rock it like that", "My adidas", "Mary, Mary" and "You be Illin" are great.
The highlight is "Walk this Way". They took a song that was essentially a predecessor to rap and made it even more funky. I will challlenge any Aerosmith fan to a debate...if it was not for RUN DMC then Aerosmith would still be an obscure, over the hill group from the 70's. They made Aeromsith cool again! Run DMC's version is an improvement over Aerosmith's. This song is the ultimate party tune.
This cd belongs in any essential ROCK cd collection
LEGENDS.......2006-07-19
Run DMC will always be the best to rhyme. The beats are great and will make you say wow. They are not overated like some say because they are just so great that people can't say enough about their skills. This is an album of their classics and this is the record i put in my cd player to bring me back, or to just chill. Their music makes you feel so good and the beats you just want to rock your head to. Songs like 'you be illin', you talk to much', 'its like that', 'its tricky', and 'runs house' will never get old. Those aren't there only good songs, this album is full of hits and so are there other records. Its different than todays music definitly, yet they will always be the best rap group of all time.

My First Time.......2007-04-01
I remember, back when my older brother got his first car and popped this cd in when I rode with him. I fell in love with this cd so much that I knew when the skips happened(and still do till this day) and was sad when he lost this cd. Years Later, I had my own collection but it was missing something. So I searched and searched and finally found it! I've seen the movie but I will always love this album. There's heavy, hard, laid back, funky, and truly bizzare, all are great.
Judgement Night.......2007-03-12
I hated the music on this CD. The only track I liked on the whole CD was track 2 and I love it - I play that track over and over.
Good soundtrack from a forgettable film. .......2007-01-10
If I remember correctly around the time this movie came out is when the film industry started to realize with a good soundtrack packed full of kick butt artists they could really draw in larger crowds and make more money off soundtrack sales. Well, this CD is one of many victims of that film industry marketing genius that came about in the early 90's that took some great artists of the day, and in my opinion made one of the must have movie soundtracks of its time for anyone who is a fan of rap, rock, metal, or alternative.
Sure the music itself is now going on 14 years old, but at the time this was one earth moving rap-rock masterpiece considering that the now classic Aerosmith/Run DMC and Anthrax/Public Enemy duets were the only real previous rap-rock collaborations in the public eye.
For the general Joe public I would say keep browsing and save your money. As for the fans of some of the artists that just need to hear those extra songs, like myself, or the genre that might be interested in hearing the tracks I would say go for it, but like any other CD not every song is a winner.
Forgot about this one.......2006-02-20
The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was a concept album that sadly went unnoticed. Before morons like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park ruined the rap/rock genre, this was probably the best all-around album of its kind, up there with the first couple Rage Against the Machine records. Standouts include what I consider Helmet's best song ever, "Just Another Victim," which is really two songs cut in half, with House of Pain borrowing the riff to make the latter minutes into great old-school hip hop. Slayer and Ice-T, Cypress Hill with Pearl Jam (the latter whom I usually HATE), and a brilliantly disturbing teaming of Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe for "Another Body Murdered" (the first FNM song recorded after they fired original guitarist Jim Martin) are among the tightest and most intense here. Just stay away from the retarded title track by Onyx and Biohazard, it blows.
The only good rap-rock ever recorded.......2005-12-11
Good rap-rock is rarer than giant diamonds. This here is the Koh-i-Noor of the genre. What?

Run-DMC's 1986 rap masterpiece, Raising Hell, storms out of the musical gate. One of the albums that defined the transition from the old school to the new school, with its heavy rhyme sequences layered on top of drum-machine beats, and an assortment of pulse-quickening record stabs thrown in for good measure, it's relentless. The late-'80s lyricism of MCs Run and DMC is not as complex as that of today's microphone mathematicians, but that was never the point--what they lack in finesse, they more than make up in intensity, authority, and flat-out lung power. The fact that almost every line of "Peter Piper" has become the hook of another hip-hop song is a testament to the power of these originals (the "not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good" line alone has been used in countless turntablist routines). The roots of rap/metal fusion are in here, too, with songs like "It's Tricky," "Walk this Way," and the title cut making use of distorted rock guitars and pounding drums, while "Proud to Be Black" helped launch the Afrocentric-conscious rap era of the late '80s. And "My Adidas" prefigured the brand-name fetishism that hip-hop is just beginning to get over. When it comes to beats, bumps, and b-boy bravado, there has never been anyone else like Run-DMC, and this album shows why. --Joe Schloss

Run DMC's Finest Hour....(get this as your first Run DMC Album).......2007-01-29
Arguably one of the most important Rap acts to ever grace a Mic, Run DMC where largely credited with taking rap music, which at that point, was largely considered the domain of the streets and small clubs, and managing to cross over to the mainstream. This, their third (and unarguably most important) album, was the moment when the trio, found themselves at the forefront of the MTV generation. And although 2002's "Greatest Hits" album cherry picks the biggest moments in their career (i.e. The most popular Singles) this album is probably a better overview of the immortal Run Dmc's output. If any of their albums could be stood up as their greatest achievement with the late `Jam Master Jay', and Cement, Run Dmc's Place, in rap history as Hip-Hop's ambassadors....then this is it!! With the tongue twisting raps of "Peter Pier", with it's energetic bravado and uncompromising swagger, this was a exactly the sort of track that endeared them to both underground rap fans, and the chart buying public. As the first track on this album beautifully leading straight into the superlative "It's Tricky", with it's stuttering bass/beats and playful rhymes, not to mention a superbly playful video to accompany the single release. Run Dmc began the gradual crossover appeal of Hip-Hop. But to purely mention just Run Dmc in this review would be unfair, not to mention a unsung pivotal figure in their success....the production genius of "Rick Rubin" that toughened their sound, and give the rudimentary production of their first two albums, a more polished and accessible edge. And nowhere is this better exemplified then, when the phenomenal Aerosmith/Run Dmc pairing "Walk This Way" rolls into view, it skilfully mixed rock dynamics, with the cool loops and beats of Hip-Hop, and although it's now been played to the point of over-familiarity, there can be no arguments as to how influential it was, in taking Hip-Hop/Rap from the underground and to a much wider audience. As a group, Run Dmc where always smart then the average rap act, firstly by affiliating themselves with the `Adidas' shoe company (Hence the "My Adidas" track). Their sound has always been one of Confident street smart and the Brash ("Dumb Girl"), and more importantly by being louder and more invigorating then their rivals, but in such a way as to not scare of potential new listeners. Compared to the sort of lyrical delivery of more contemporary acts (Nas, Jay-Z, Gza), or the leap and strides made in Production (Madlib, Kayne West, Dj Premier), this album can sound a little dated on occasion. but this album was (and still is) Run Dmc's Crowning Glory and Paved the way, for future acts, and it's importance in Hip-Hop simply cannot be underestimated.
One of the first hiphop classics.............2006-09-22
1986 - Raising Hell. What! Too many joints to name. The whole thing is part of this hiphop thing blueprint. Run, D, and Jay were superstars and the undisputed Kings of Rap. Walk this way was they entry to mainstream, but in the hood we were blasting My Adidas, It's Tricky, Hit it Run and You be Illin. Classic Groundbreaking Material. Nuff Said!
A milestone in the music-industry.......2006-04-14
In the middle of the 80's, when we went from old school to new school, Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay were the kings of the hill. Breakbeats got exchanged with drum machines, and the trio put the skills in focus. "Two turntables and a mic" as we say it.
That was all you needed, and the interaction between MC Run and Darryl Mack really shock people. Now it wasn't just important what you said, but how you said it.
Even though Run-DMC and King Of Rock also did well, with respectively gold- and platinum selling, it was Raising Hell that was the real breakthrough for the Queens-trio. The record sold more than three million copies, and seriously put hip-hop on the map. Run-DMC were known for being the first to merge rap and rock ("Rock Box" from 1984) and their collaboration with Aerosmith, "Walk This Way", which became a huge crossover hit. Others songs, for example the DJ-favorite "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas" and "You Be Illin'", are all looked upon as classics today.
In my opinion Raising Hell are their finest moment. The debutalbum, Run-DMC are also classic material, but Raising Hell was more universality and entertaining. They were grown up, and talked about more than just sucker mc's. I remember this record was in heavy rotation home in my room, and I also remembering I tried to learn the lyrics by memory.
One of my personal favorites was actually the acapella track "Son Of Byford". If you wanna learn more about the roots of hip-hop, this is the essential buy. These three are real pioneers, and Raising Hell are nothing less than a milestone in the music industry. Recognize!

I big THANK YOU should go out to RUN-DMC for putting hip-hop on the map. I understand that there were others in the industry that came before RUN-DMC (ex. SugarHill Gang) yet: I believe that Run-Dmc wanted to try to reach thier music to a much broader audience, and doing a cover of Walk this Way was a brillent way to reach fans of rock music. Not only did they cover this, they had Aerosmith play along with them. In todays music, this is all so common. Most aren't suprised with Duets and Guest appearences on albums, such as Country going with Hip-Hop or Metal going with Classical. But for 1986, this was a big deal. I only know of one odder pairing and that would be Bing Crosby and David Bowie for their Duet on "The little Drummer Boy" Funny thing about RUN-DMC was that not only did fans love "Walk this Way" but realized that the rest of the album kicked some a** 2! This was the birth of Hip-Hop from out of the streets and into the suburbs. Over the next few years we would see the industry take storm, as hip-hop began gettting airplay, and its own radio stations, not just some late night shows on college radio stations. Then ganster rap evolved (thank NWA) and the rest is history. WE must thank Run-DMC for this, for who knows where hip-hop would be without them..ENJOY
The One and Only.......2006-01-25
"Raising Hell" was the really the landmark album for Run-DMC because it took the best parts of their first two, "Run-DMC" and "King of Rock", and put them together for an ultimate classic. By putting the hard guitar lines on some of the songs and keeping Jay's scratch with D and Run's chemistry, they really put two and two together.Their first two are still the only of their kind, but "Raising Hell" really took it to the next level for them. This album launched them to superstardom and opened up a whole new audience for the Hollis crew. "Raising Hell" will always be remembered as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever, no matter how many years from now.
"Peter Piper" was one of Run-DMC's greatest tracks ever because it had clever, slick wordplay with Run and DMC trading nursery rhymes and Jam Master Jay made one of the best rap beats up to 1986. "It's Tricky" is another one of their best known songs, it had a hard guitar line and a good chant for a chorus, the verses are all funny. "My Adidas", of course, is a straight classic old school rap jam, it defined an era of clothing and has a super drum kit beat. Like in most of them on this album, Run and D show their great chemistry that allows them to play off each other and even finish each other's sentences. "Walk This Way" was the song that opened the most doors for them, but besides its influence, it's cool because it took an old rock song and made it into a hip hop landmark. "Hit It Run" is a really good beat, Jay's scratch sounds awesome, and every rhyme is right on point. "You Be Illin'" is one of my favorite songs, the sax line is real catchy and the lyrics are funny, talking of one drugged up guy and his problems. "Proud to Be Black" finished off the album strong, the first song of its kind, political minded as the two MCs let some weight off their chest and show their pride. This Deluxe version is a good buy because it includes some a cappella mixes, demos, and live tracks.
Like any of their albums, "Raising Hell" is invaluable in its influence on hip hop and the music industry at large. But more than that, it is a great album to listen to. I struggle to think of all the times I've heard tracks from here sampled, I've probably heard every beat used at least once. It's a classic in every sense of the word, so add it right up to your collection if it's not already.

Innovative doesn't equal Genius.......2007-04-07
You have to give them credit but still you can't judge them on that. Their ryhmes can't compare to the master 2pac or 50 cent. I think everyone who floats it with hip hop knows that these kids blew it by getting involved with Aerosmith. Rock n Roll and drugs were never meant to mix with rap. This music needed to be about bling, [...] and guns while rock needed to be about drugs, cars and [...]. Praise them if you want but tell me you would'nt rather listen to Public Enemy or Starsailor.
Must Have If You Love Hip Hop.......2006-09-16
First off, all the DJ's need to get like 8 copies of this record because beat juggling this & the singles are always fresh. I myself, have an ill routine/juggle with Peter Piper (such a great song) Look...you won't have to skip any of the tracks because the LP is perfect.
Chickety check ya'll.......2005-08-30
I'm a huge old school rap fan and this is the blueprint on how it's supposed to be done. I was in 8th grade when this came out and it just added to my already legendary flow. I would recite "Son of Byford" while walking down the hall with a smoking hot philly on each arm. I was wearing generra shirts, polo shirts, coca-cola shirts and Diet Pepsi jeans. My hair was parted perfectly on the right side to the point that women just wanted to touch it. This CD is flawless all the way through and inspired me to start the hottest new rap group in Millard at the time. Run B.R.A.(Burns, Rich, Abs) was just off the hook and hit home with the under 15 set. We had hit after hit with songs like, "I can't wait until I'm 16", "Hooking up at the roller rink" and "Grab my butt you crazy woman!!". These standards were requested time after time at birthday parties. We would play retirement homes, Copier repair shops and the Sapp Brothers Ballroom. It was always standing room only and many fights broke out over which one of us was the hottest. We were all extremely smooth, but when I laid the smooth as yogurt voice out there, the ladies were throwing undergarments at me. By saying that, I'm not implying that Burns and Jabs were not smooth as well, they hooked up after every show too and are still smoother than you, the reader, could ever dream of being. To sum this up, your chances of being like us are minimal, but you can buy this CD to make yourself feel a little like us.
No other rating possible.......2005-05-16
This album is definately a "5". There is really not much more that I need to say. If you've never owned it or heard it, you are truly missing out on a piece of history.
Thier finest album .........2005-02-20
By their third album, Run-D.M.C. were primed for a breakthrough into the mainstream, but nobody was prepared for a blockbuster on the level of Raising Hell. Run-D.M.C. and King of Rock had established the crew's fusion of hip-hop and hard rock, but that sound didn't blossom until Raising Hell, partially due to the presence of Rick Rubin as producer. Rubin loved metal and rap in equal measures and he knew how to play to the strengths of both, while slipping in commercial concessions that seemed sly even when they borrowed from songs as familiar as "My Sharona" (heard on "It's Tricky"). Along with longtime Run-D.M.C. producer Russell Simmons, Rubin blew down the doors of what hip-hop could do with Raising Hell because it reached beyond rap-rock and found all sorts of sounds outside of it. Sonically, there is simply more going on in this album than any previous rap record, more hooks, more drum loops, more scratching, more riffs, more of everything. Where other rap records, including Run-D.M.C.'s, were all about the rhythm, this is layered with sounds and ideas, giving the music a tangible flow. But the brilliance of this record is that even with this increased musical depth, it still rocks as hard as hell, and in a manner that brought in a new audience. Of course, the cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," complete with that band's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, helped matters considerably, since it gave an audience unfamiliar with rap an entry point, but if it was just a novelty record, a one-shot fusion of rap and rock, Raising Hell would never have sold three million copies. No, the music was fully realized and thoroughly invigorating, rocking harder and better than any of its rock or rap peers in 1986, and years later,

Original, hard, and classic hip hop.......2006-01-25
The second of the classic Run-DMC albums brought their heavy rock influence to the spotlight. Jam Master Jay produced tracks with rocking guitar lines and drum patterns that matched Run and DMC's hard delivery perfectly. Many will argue that this is the best Run-DMC album and it's easy to see why.
"King Of Rock" is one of the coolest songs. The guitar line is really good and the rhymes are untouchable, there are so many classic lines from that song. "You Talk Too Much" disses a certain blabbermouth that the Hollis Crew was acquainted with, and it approaches six minutes of destroying disses and jokes to him. Without this track I don't think we'd see any diss tracks in rap today, that's how influential this album is. "Jam Master Jammin'" is not too different from "Jam Master Jay" on the debut, it's another just another amazing Run-DMC song. "Roots, Rap, Reggae" is another one of the most influential songs. Run-DMC had already fused rap and rock together, which is still done today, so here they took the time to do the same with reggae. Yellowman, a great 80s reggae singer, is a welcomed collaborator. Without this song I couldn't see dancehall reggae today. "Can You Rock It Like This?" is a very hard sounding track, the bass and guitar sound very harsh and heavy. This deluxe edition has demos, live recordings, and remixes, so it's a good buy.
"King of Rock" was universally influential by fusing rock and rap and changing the face of music once again. This album has been imitated countless times but will never be duplicated.
This is what set the standard..........2005-12-21
This Album set the standard for all Rap music today. Rap was good and people listened but KOR blew the roof off the rap world. Every cut gets a good rating from me. But the main title King of Rock Fused the Rock and Rap world and forever solidified raps place as a legitimate art form. No matter how many times I listen to it it still sounds fresh.

--Rickey Wright

where's the original 12" version of "It's like that" ?.......2006-07-12
I bought the original Run-D.M.C. 12" single It's like that back when it first came out and then Hard Times, Rock Box, etc. and I also bought their first 2 albums on vinyl but what I didn't like then is the same thing I don't like now - they put a short edited version of It's Like That on the album. Since they remastered and reissued this album now with bonus tracks, wouldn't it have been logical to put the original 7+ minutes 12" version of It's like that on the CD? I believe that Hard Times is the same length on the album as it is on the 12" single. I have only seen the original 12" length version on a compilation album called Hip Hop Greats which I believe is available here on Amazon. Anyway, I give this new remastered digipak version 4 stars because they omitted the 12" version of It's like that.

The first rap album ever and thus the most influential! Very creative stuff - minimalistic rap at its finest!.......2006-01-08
"Run-D.M.C." was essentially the first straight-up rap album ever and thus it's the most influential - it's very very creative. The production is extremely minimalistic but still manages to be very effective, hard-sounding and well done. The other key component here is Run and D.M.C. who, though they aren't the fastest rappers ever, are definitely very charismatic and fun to listen to. They work well together in a very Beastie Boys-esque way (you can tell that group was influenced by Run-D.M.C.) Their lyrics are always interesting, brutally honest and effective. Unless all you want to listen to is fast-paced rap, nothing here will bore you. Every track is oldschool rap gold, and those who can appreciate its slightly dated and very minimalistic style will love this oldschool gem. Highly recommended! If you liked this I would also highly recommend Nas' "Illmatic", Ice Cube's "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted", Ice Cube's "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" and Digable Planets' "Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space)".
Highlights include:
the entire album!
Interesting relic from the earliest rap era (as it's known today).......2005-08-07
This is one of rap's true original blueprints. The rapping is pretty basic compared to the best rap music today and the percussion and effects are pretty much stuck in the 80s. It's also not 100% tight in a few places, but close enough. It's still pretty slammin' and fun to listen to, even today.
For me (and I suspect for many others too), "Rock Box" is the standout track. It's got a totally infectious rock-guitar riff and there's great original heavy metal soloing all over it, although subsequent rap/metal hybrids have moved far beyond this. As far as I know, "Rock Box" is the first ever melding of rap and (original, not sampled) heavy metal on record. Rap music as we know it today actually began on the streets of Harlem in the early 70s, but rapping has existed since the 50s and 60s (in particular, see The Last Poets, formed in 1969) and even way before that in various similar incarnations. So this album is a pioneering work in recorded rap history, but still far removed from the origins of rap. If nothing else, it's an interesting relic.

Classic Hip Hop Music .......2006-04-15
This is just Hip Hop Music in its pure form and at its best. I definitely recommend it to the average Hip Hop listener
The most influential album of music ever.......2006-01-25
"Run-DMC" was the first hip hop album. Other groups just had records of beats after one single. Run-DMC was the best rap group and also is widely considered the first because they revolutionized music with this one album. They were the hardest rappers yet, had a lot to say and their DJ Jam Master Jay provided them with simple drum kit beats and also tracks with a heavy rock influence. "Run-DMC" is the original, classic, essential album for anyone who wishes to understand hip hop.
Every song here is classic, right on point. "Hard Times" had a simple, catchy drum beat, and Joe and Darryl relieved some of their difficulties with hard times, warning everyone else to watch out for 'em. It was the first of its kind and the message was fresh in 1983. "Rock Box" is one of the greatest songs ever. The guitar is awesome, it just makes me want to bob my head, I could listen to it all day. The rhymes, as always, are sharp and this song is just amazing. "Jam Master Jay" allowed the MCs to shout out their loyal DJ (RIP) and let their DJ rip a great beat and scratch. Famous DJs today would have no career if it were not for this song and producer, and there would probably be no shout outs in rap songs without it either. "Sucker MCs" and "Hollis Crew" were two of the first most widespread rap songs and had similar beats, and D and Run rapped about their lives, experiences, and whatever else they really felt like. They are two of the most classic and groundbreaking songs ever. "It's Like That" has my favorite beat and shows once again the heavy and hard side of the Hollis Crew. The Deluxe edition has live recordings and extra features, it's a good buy. This is the most influential music album ever because it completely changed the industry forever.
Twenty years later, "Run-DMC" still sounds fresh and rappers are still using ideas and samples from it. Without this album, I don't believe hip hop would be where it is today. This is the most original and classic album of hip hop you'll find out there.

Great Run DMC Reissue.......2005-09-08
This album was originally released in 1984. This album is just so symbolic of a time in music when rap music was raw. Mad classics on this album including "It's Like That," "Rock Box" and "Sucker M.C.'s" It's so great to hear this music sound so good, much better than it sounded on record, casette or the previous reissue. The album includes 4 bonus tracks--"Rock Box (B-Boy Mix), "Here We Go" (Live at the Funhouse), "Sucker M.C.'s (Live), and "Russell & Larry Running At The Mouth." The booklet includes and extensive selection written by Bill Adler, the author of Tougher Than Leather.

Just goes to show what you listen to as you're younger.......2006-08-12
I was open to everything, and anything musical, so yes I even played this all the way through. I also watched a few of the cartoons in the show. I don't want to go back there again. I feel only one song was salvagable from this pile of junk, and that was the Red Hot Chili Peppers version of "Search & Destroy." They didn't try, and make it sound funky, but went with a full frontal sonic assult that would've made Iggy proud. However, the rest is horrific....especially on Aerosmith's "Deuces Are Wild". This is also from my horrible first few months in Florida. Which goes to show that either I was changing musically again, or Florida stations suck. This album does too.
Disjointed rock album.......2006-05-21
For four years, Beavis and Butt-head was a very popular show on MTV. But this album inspired by that show left me disappointed. Most of the rock bands on here come out with very disjointed and uninteresting songs. Some of their worst efforts in their careers and they don't really rock that well. Even Megadeth's song sounds so self-deprecating in some cases. Sir Mix-A-Lot's redo of his song comes off as lame. And the Beavis and Butt-head number with Cher sounds silly and out of place. Come To Butt-head sounds corny. Only the Run-DMC song Bounce, and Aerosmith's rocking Deuces are Wild stand out of this mess. The others sound like they were left on the cutting room floors in studios and that's not good. Save your money on this sorry mess and buy something else!
Classic In It's Own Right.......2005-10-18
I have always thought this CD was underrated, even when it was released back in the mid-90s. You can see the track list above, so I won't list them all here.
Why you should pick up this album: 1) Nostalgia. It will take you back to a time in music history that meant something - rocking out hardcore. It may have been considered crap back then, and considered crap now by some, but I believe this "crap" is better than much of the crap that is put out nowadays 2) For some great tracks 3) It's just good `ol fashion nonsense.
What will annoy you about this album: The skits are tied into the songs, and you cannot separate them. For instance, the opening track one is both a Beavis and Butt-head skit and a Nirvana song put into one track. This is very annoying if you only want to listen to a song and not the skits. The whole album is generally like this.
By far Nirvana's "I Hate Myself And I Want To Die" is the best overall song on the album insofar as the most genuine, and in hindsight, painful one, given the nature of the title of the song and what Kurt did to himself. But there are some other great songs, such as Megadeath's "99 Ways To Die." In general I hate rap, but RUN DMCs "Bounce" deserves a listen. Also, I don't know why Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Monsta Mack" isn't played anywhere. It is very catchy and funny at the same time, and it is one of the few, and best, rap songs I have ever heard.
I hope this album is re-released with a bonus "making of" and the skits are separated tracks from the song tracks. We need a re-release all you greedy fat cats, I'd buy it.
The title says it all!.......2005-08-12
Listening to this album is like watching the MTV animated comedy. The album begins as if it was live. The announcer says,"Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready to rock? Would you please welcome Beavis and Butthead!". Butthead tells the audience(voiced by B&B creator Mike Judge),"Here's one we just wrote,HUH HUH HUH HUH!". It's Nirvana performing I HATE MYSELF AND WANT TO DIE. Butthead quotes,"That kicked ass!". Beavis quotes,"It ruled! It ruled! HEH HEH HEH HEH!". Before Anthrax's LOOKING DOWN THE BARREL OF A GUN plays,B&B checks out a tour bus containing Anthrax. After Beavis looks at an album of photos of naked females,he takes the album into the lavatory and pulls out the photos(it is claimed that one of the females was Beavis' shapely mother). Beavis actually went into the lavatory to move his bowels, needless to say. But B&B end up thrown off the bus. Judge, who has a songwriting talent as well, gives us the 70's disco-flavored COME TO BUTTHEAD. Megadeth gives us 99 WAYS TO DIE. Run D.M.C. joins B&B in spoken vocals before BOUNCE. DEUCES ARE WILD,performed by Aerosmith kicks major ass! DAW is an outtake from the band's 1989 album PUMP. It subsequently appeared on the band's 1994 album BIG ONES and on their 2002 ultimate compilation O YEAH! ULTIMATE AEROSMITH HITS. White Zombie's I AM HELL is OK. Primus' POETRY AND PROSE is cool. The lead singer claims he's "a Three Stooges man like Larry,Curly and Moe but once in a while I get a kick out of that Beavis and Butthead show!". Sir Mix-A-Lot's MONSTA MACK is pretty cool. I guess the most famous of all is Cher's re-recording of I GOT YOU BABE by the late Sonny Bono. She and Bono,as Sonny & Cher recorded the song in 1965 and was a Top 10 hit. Butthead asked Cher if she was once married to "that Bono(bah no) dude". Butthead was referring to U2's frontman Bono Vox. Cher replied,"Bono(bo no),Sonny Bono." Butthead thought that post-Sonny & Cher,Sonny was a San Diego cop. Cher said,"No,he's the mayor of Palm Springs(California)." Also there's awesome tracks recorded by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jackyl. Following the conclusion of IGYB is a reprise of CTB. The reprise is in hip-hop form featuring an unknown(at least to me) rap/hip-hop artist. Between IGYB and the CTB reprise is audience applause and the announcer saying,"Ladies and gentlemen,Butthead has left the building."(is if Butthead were the late Elvis Presley). Beavis replies,"No he hasn't. He's in the toilet! HEH HEH HEH HEH!". If you're a B&B fan, this item is for you. New copies of this album are very reasonably priced to own. Of course, they cost several dollars more each when it was a new release in 1993.

Hip-Hop Essential.......2007-03-09
Run DMC, recognized as one of the pioneers of hip-hop/rap, gives us a treat with this album's release. Most of their top hits are loaded in this album, and many of the songs will take you back to the years when hip-hop was original and free of sample-heavy copycats as it is today. The album kicks off with "Rock Box", which is a rather underexposed hit, but true DMC fans will remember the song a few seconds into it. It's followed up by "Run's House", which is a decent song... but, the third track, "Walk This Way", is recognized as one of the most popular songs ever. The combination of rap and rock (Aerosmith lends their skills in this track) in this track became a signature song for Run DMC, as the song went on to hit multiple charts and was played regularly on several radio stations. "King Of Rock" is another popular hit that is included on this album, and the song is an original that became popular during the break-dance craze era of the early '80's. "It's Tricky" is a slightly different song compared to the others, hinting at a dance-beat rhythm as opposed to a more street-beat rhythm that most of their other tracks offer. "It's Like That" and "Raising Hell" provides listeners with the more street-beat sound, as "My Adidas" provides the more contemporary/radio sound that younger listeners enjoyed back then. "Sucker MC's" was one of their initial hits that made radio waves and "Mary Mary" definitely stuck on listeners' minds when it was popular in 1988. There are multiple hits on this album, and if you've ever had the heart for Run DMC, this collection is definitely a treasure.
Doesnt hold up so well........2007-02-14
I was mostly dissapointed in the videos. The quality is a little questionable and there just arent that many videos or songs for that matter that hold up all these years later. Walk this way being the one big exception the video is hillarious and the song still rocks.
