Joe Budden [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Believe the hype--Budden, who sat in Def Jam purgatory for three years, ain't your average Joe MC. Like 50 Cent before him, Budden makes the thorny transition from New York underground mix-tape legend to aboveground Billboard chart-ready emcee--especially on tracks such as the club-friendly, Just Blaze-produced "Pump It Up" and the 2002 club hit "Focus." Yet, the most compelling songs here are the ones that aren't as hyper or glitzy, but that border on autobiographical. On "Walk with Me," Budden cleverly outlines a day in his life, moving from tales of past drug addictions to his current status as Def Jam's star recruit. Joe Budden is one of those rare releases that might appeal to both purist heads and Top 20 droids. "Fire," which guests Busta Rhymes, and "#1," which artfully stitches together samples from three popular KRS-One tunes, should satisfy both sides of the "keep it real" argument. Minus some of the overindulgent lyrical mack-ons ("Ma Ma Ma"), this record is near flawless by new millennium rap standards. --Dalton Higgins

Album Description
Joe Budden is known for his energy, his eclectic lyricism and his emotional wordplay, all of which are showcased on The Album Before The Album. Budden unleashes various thoughts through freestyling, like not fitting in on "Outcast" and helping those less fortunate on "Broken Wing." He also designs his own mash-up as he borrows the hook and rhythm from "Outside" and flows over it, appropriately entitled "Staind" for the metal band he borrowed the idea from. Budden also adds some heat for the clubs with bangers like "Pop Off" and "Stuntin'," featuring Coke. With such high energy and creative ideas, it's clear Joe Budden treated The Album Before The Album like he's about to release an actual major label album.

Once again Joe Budden drops a great album.......2007-07-29
Joe Budden is back once again with another great album (like his debut - I don't have any of the Mood Muzik mixtapes). It's a shame he kind of fell off the radar when his debut didn't sell like it was supposed to, but he continues to show his excellence on the mic with this and almost every song I hear him featured on. With 16 songs, you get 2 classics, 1 almost classic, 11 are good or real good songs, and 2 are ok. Guests are minimal as well and are some nice underground artists appearing on 4 of the 16 songs you get a good deal of Joe on this one. A must have album and so far one of the top 3 albums of 2007 (with Joell Ortiz "Brick: Bodega Chronicles" and Dogg Pound "Dogg Chit"). A must have album for fans of true hip hop.

The Best of Jerz In my Opinion.......truly a masterpiece....I Love This Album....Wonderful.....A Must!
Joe Budden - Joe Budden.......2006-04-20
First of all, this cd a 4.5/5. On this album Joe Budden talks about things that he has dealt with and been though in his life, and he also shows his versitility between uptempo and slow-paced tracks. The singles "Pump It Up" and "Fire" were both hits and great songs, yet are not the best tracks on this album which shows the depth of nice songs here. Almost every track is above average and worth listening to. This album is one of the best debuts in recent hip-hop history. I would recommend listening to this album if you are unfamiliar with Joe Budden.
top tracks:
1-she wanna know (f. lil' mo)
2-u ain't gotta go home
3-porno star
4-ma ma ma (f. 112)
5-fire (f. busta rhymes)
(8 out of 10): Did You Sleep On This LP???.......2006-01-20
Joe Budden's debut album was one of the biggest commercially slept on albums of 2003. The first time I heard Joe Budden was on a bunch of DJ Clue mixtapes in 2001/2002 along with Fabolous and Paul Cain. Joey did have a flow, and back then I couldn't wait for him to come out with an album. He finally came out with a album with his song "Pump It Up".
Joe had energy throughout this album and would rhyme about events in his life. Many songs like "Walk With Me" have very emotional touches as Joe explains how he feels. Along with that he would aim at other rappers who rhyme about events that they never been through before on songs like "Pusha Man" and "Real Life & Rap". "Pusha Man" would have rhymes like "People used to think of jail like it was school//now new jack spit about jail like it's cool..." And the song about him being raised by his mother on the song "Calm Down".
Unfortunately he will be known for his one hit wonder "Pump It Up". He had a second single called "Fire" with Busta Rhymes, but that didn't receive much buzz. The song "Focus" was a highly anticipated song that appeared on many mixtapes, and I'm suprised that it wasn't scrapped on the final cut. But the song is dope though.
There are a few problems with this album though. There are many flat falling tracks on here, like the song with Lil Mo on "I Wanna Know" that sounds a little too soft. And times on this album, people may think he complains too much. Especially if he does it for about "10 Minutes" (literally), making it a huge filler. Also the bonus track "Porno Star" at the end of the CD sounds out of place on this album.
Other than that Joe Budden's debut was pretty hot. I'm suprised that a lot of people slept on this back in 2003. Joey has rhyme skills to prove that he can carry an entire album, so I don't see why people are bashing him. Give it a few spins and you'll possibly like it. I did and I enjoyed this one.

"They see a dollar in Joseph".......2005-10-03
Joe Budden's self titled debut is all I needed to call him one of my favorite rappers. He stands out from the hip hop crowd. I love this little things he does to his sexy voice, like the way he drags it, it's creative. It also separates him from some of these other average/lame rappers, because remember...EVERYONE WANTS TO RAP NOWADAYS. He talks about some deep issues, as well as the usual drugs, sex, material things and money. But, he does not base his album on those subjects, like most. So why 3 stars and not 5? Well, Joe's production strays on the pop side, something that should not occur continuously on a rap album. Also, he has some really nice songs on here, but he also has a few fillers, something that should be expected on a RAP album with 17 tracks and one or two interludes. Why these rap artists insist on creating albums with such hefty track listings is beyond me,,,
"Pump It Up" was the song that introduced Joseph Budden to the world. Music audience enjoyed the song and were now on to Joe. I like this song but I don't feel that it is an album highlight, well, it is lyrically, but as a whole, nah. While many album intros are weird, annoying or just flat out lame, Joe does his thing! I love his intro. He's introducing his beautiful self to the world lyrically, and does a fine job. "She Wanna Know" is a nice song, but Budden sound a little too much like Ja Rule in the song. "Calm Down" is a slower tempo song about parts of Joe's life. He gets pretty deep with his listener, and most would want to take a second listen. "Walk With Me" is on the same line as "Calm Down", both being slower songs, and both being about the life of "Mouse" (Budden's nickname is Mouse because when he gets angry, his voice squeaks).
"Pusha Man", "Stand Up Nucca" and "Give Me Reason" are some of the more lame tracks on the album, though still listenable.
Overall, this is a strong debut. It's one of my favorite hip hop CDs and I recommend it to anyone interested!

Are you in the mood?.......2006-06-28
Jump off Joe Budden aka That Dude is one of those cats I knew off but never paid any real attention too as I just passed him off as any other rapper, and being what you would consider a 'real head' I had no intention of checking for him. I happened to hear a couple joints of 'Mood Music' and was hugely impressed by his awesome flow and excellent lyrics, so I thought I'd give him a go and cop the whole thing and boy I am glad I did. As I mentioned Joe has a near flawless flow and a brilliantly creative way with words, not only that he is also one of the deepest dudes around. He gets deep and introspective on many of the tracks and disperses a staggering number of bars, and upon listening to this I'm convinced he's one of the most talented cats around, and all this praise has been earned by Joe as it's coming from someone who didn't even really care about dude before hearing 'Mood Music'. Just to make sure I wasn't trippin' I gave a friend of mine a copy and he too was totally blown away. 'Mood Music' is as good as any album out so considering the fact it's more of a mixtape is all the more amazing. I cannot recommend this CD more nor can I hold Joe Budden in any higher regard. Please do yourself a massive favour and purchase a copy, as I can't think of an artist or CD more deserving of your well earned money.

The only thing I dont like about this CD is the fact that DJ OnPoint won't stop talkin on Budden's vocals...The Songs are tight...but this is basically a mixtape...I would've prefered this being an advance album of The Growth...

Ok I know people are just dazzed with 5o cent mania but fact is Joe Budden is more versatile. If you listen to 5o cent in his cd he blows peoples brains 547 times not to mention how many people he kills. But I ain't hating cause 5o's style is maybe the best out right know. But bottom line JOe Buedden's cd has club tracks, emotional tracks & real tracks. Joe doesn't talk about ice or money but rather his life and the facts about hip hop actor's(wankstas). Joe doesn't say hes a gansta but rather that some real ones dislike him. I know people won't like him cause he doesn't have Dr. DRe Or Eminem by his side( rather the very annoying Dj Clue who in my mine ruins every song he talks over in). But to be honest put fabolous style(minus the iced out money having flows), Eminems rhyme material( his life problems with his parents, his exwife and his ex drug adiction)and 5o cent'scome from nothing but the underground ayenda and you got Joe Budden maybe one of the top 5 hip hop artist in the present. Give this Guy a chance you won't regret it and you'll love the fact that you don't have to skip a track in his cd.
Excellent.......2003-07-03
Joe Buddens new self titled album is great. It has a nice blend of soft and hard beats. I recommend you go and get it now. His rhyming is unbelivable and not like most albums that have only a few good tracks, every track is great.
