When asked to name a current crew that conceptualizes to the standard set by Public Enemy and their crack production team, the Bomb Squad, hip-hop historian Harry Allen didn't hesitate before saying, "The Dungeon Family. I think those guys are scientists." That's an observant description of the Atlanta-based collective, featuring Goodie Mob, Outkast, and Society of Soul alongside the production teams Organized Noize and Earth Tone 3. Even in Darkness displays the ensemble's ability to isolate various elemental aspects of hip-hop and recombine them into fresh-sounding, organically pure compositions. Breaking it down, you'll find you're on Planet Rock: a strong portion of Funkadelic mixed in with second-generation bass culture, turntablism, and sweet soul harmonies (courtesy of Cee-Lo and the amazing Sleepy Brown). But don't get nervous--conceptualization does not mean intellectualization. These are straight-up hip-hop party tunes, floss rhymes and all. As the Dungeon Family themselves advise, "Follow the lights, they lead to something." Something exceptional. --Rebecca Levine

From URB Magazine
Early Outkast ushered in a new sound in hip-hop, a soundtrack as fitting for a driveby as a cipher, and perhaps best suited to backyard barbecues. Since then, the sound has evolved to include interplanetary road music - Atliens, Aquemini and Stankonia suggest André 3000 and Big Boi may have come from a world similar to, but far more sophisticated than, their native Atlanta.

The Dungeon Family album is their posse record, compiling over a dozen rappers. As far as I know, it's hip-hop policy that posse albums suck. Recent memory brings up D-12, Flipmode Squad and Junior M.A.F.I.A., whose work pales in comparison to that of their leaders. Someone messed up - this album is really good.

It's no Outkast record, or even Goodie Mob, but it's easily the next best thing. The crew keeps the Outkast/DF sound crunk with collaborations from the various groups. Lone "guest" Bubba Sparxxx fits right in on "White Gutz," amid five DF clique members. The few low points are overshadowed by the many bangers, from Dirty South anthem-to-be "Crooked Booty" to "Rollin'," which feels like an old soul replay with a funk guitar lead and "shoo bop shoo bop" in back.

The biggest disappointment is that nobody really gets a chance to shine. Dré and Big are noticeable for their familiarity, and Cee-Lo Goodie for his trademark sing-song. Otherwise, the many tight verses just need room to breathe. Maybe we'll get that on the Dungeon Family solo and group records undoubtedly to come. Maybe that's the point.

5 out of 5 stars DUNGEON FAMILY IS CLASSIC.......2007-02-18

This is a really good CD. it has a varity of styles all synthesized together to make a classic. Every member brings their own element to the table. The beats are original, the lyrics are creative, overall it is a very good CD. Not for people who like that commercial garbage all on BET and MTV. This is for people who appreciate rap music. Rap is rythem and poetry, and this is exactly that. The group consists of Outkast, Big Rube, Mello, Witchdoctor, T-Mo, Backbone, Khujo, Big Gipp, Freddie Calhoun, Cee-Lo, Mr. DJ, Ray Murray, Sleepy Brown, Rico Wade, all of which are very talented dudes. If you don't already got this, definately buy it, you won't be disappointed, it's a classic for sure.

3 out of 5 stars Good Group...Horrible Chemestry (Rating: 6 out of 10- -3 stars).......2007-02-03

Boy oh boy was this an awkward album. This is one of those elemets that there are too many ingreedients in the pot and ended up a mess. That is exactly what this album sounds like to me, a big mess. When I kept hearing about the Dungeon Family (starting on the Witchdoctor LP), I was ready of what they were going to sound like all together. Throughout then, the group has acquired a lot of wack artists in addition to what they already have. In 2001, you have "Even In Darkness".

I see a lot of people giving this 5 stars because of the fact that Outkast and Goodie Mob were involved in the project. If it were them alone with a few others (Killer Mike, Cool Breeze, Witchdoctor) then my score would have been higher. One problem was that this album had no chemestry like the solo albums (listen to this album then listen to something like "Still Standing", and you'll hear the difference). The artists on here just didn't mix. "6 Minutes" and "Trans DF Express" are awesome tracks, but all the artists just seemed out of place when they did their verses. Another problem was that if the artists weren't widely known, they were inexcusably wack. With the exception of Killer Mike and Slimm Calhoun, "Curtains (DF 2nd Generation)" is one of those songs that I'm talking about. Even some of the known artists dropped a wack verse every so often, like Cool Breeze on "Forever Pimpin" and Witchdoctor on "What Is Rap"(and these are my two FAVORITE artists from the DF Crew. It hurts me so much to knock them. And lets not forget everyone who joined in on "Crooked Booty".). Also most of the concepts on the songs failed to keep a listeners attention, like the song "On and On and On".

Now I'm done knocking this album, because there is some good about this album. As I mentioned before, some of the highlights of this album are "Trans DF Express" and "6 Minutes (Dungeon Family It's On)". The G-Funk type song "Follow The Light" is another dope song that sounds experimental, but allows the listener to grove with it. The only outside guest appearance is Bubba Sparxxx on the song "White Guts", and he drops a dope verse.

This isn't a bad album, but it is not as good as these revewers say here. There are many hits on here, but there are many missses here as well. Trufully, I'm at least glad to see that this album made it to see the light of day for my curiousity, especially from a group who helped put my hometown on the map. I won't lie, talent trufully exists here amongst most members of DF, but the concept behind this album doesn't though. Buy this album if you are only curious of what these members sound as a group. Otherwise I recommend that you just stick with the solo albums and leave this on the shelf.

Favorite Tracks: Follow The Light, Trans DF Express, 6 Minutes (Dungeon Family It's On), White Guts

Honorable Mention: Curtains (DF 2nd Generation)

Peace Everyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rap CDs in recent history.......2005-07-05

The Dungeon Family is still in my CD rotation after 4 years or however long it has been since it first hit the shelves. Following Stankonia, I can honestly say I was expecting Even In Darkness to be a notch below OutKast's acclaimed effort. I could not have been more wrong. Creativity, ability and perfect execution are all pushed to distances never reached in Southern Hip Hop before this release. Some highlight tracks are the "Crooked Booty," "Follow The Light," and "On & On & On." There are no weak songs, besides perhaps the intro. The "Trans DF Express" punishes the subwoofer, while songs like "Excaliber" show off Cee-Lo's amazing artistic ability. If you enjoy rap, soul music, southern hip hop, or OutKast, you can't pass on Even In Darkness.

4 out of 5 stars Dope Party Record.......2005-04-22

This is a dope party album with come occasional intellectual commentary scattered throughout. Its not crunk, its not gangsta or jiggy, its just some tight beats with some tight flows by some tight MCs. Its a great summmer BBQ type of disc.

5 out of 5 stars Let There Be Light.......2005-03-30

In the event of an "Emergency" the Dungeon Family is here to save you from the repititious sound and concepts that exist in rap/hip-hop. Outkast, Goodie Mob, Society of Soul, Witchdoctor, Cool Breeze and Backbone got together to create a fusion of futuristic sounds and lyrics to calm the average hip-hop/rap lover. Even In Darkness belongs mostly to Big Boi of Outkast and Big Gipp of Goodie Mob. Production was held down by Organized Noize and Earthtone III. "...Oooh, call the police / I will verbally murder one of these sucker mc's..." said by member Backbone on "Emergency" which features Mello of P.A. (or 66 Mello if you know your history). "On & On & On" is has a Miami sound with foreign chords to add to the uptempo composition. "White Gutz" is also a standout which starts off with the pimping flow of Big Boi, following Bubba Sparkxx and is taken over with the non-rhyme of Big Gipp. "Sitting on four hundred wires that's what they love / incence swinging from the mirror that's what they love / six coats lick with the glaze that's what they love / driving with the dealership tag that's what they love / harrigbone straight on my shoulder that's what they love / the smell of new leather in the cold that's what they love / straw hats, v-neck tees that's what they love / moonroof open blowing smoke that's what they love / Romeo cologne every week that's what they love / that's what they love / that's what they love..." By the time you get to "Excalibur" the DF will have you in awe with this mideval with organs and 808 kick to win you over. "...360 degrees / of emcees / making these rap niggas sound like they're swinging from trees..."

4 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Sincerity.......2006-12-30

This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10

This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.

2 out of 5 stars Pete's Dad.......2005-12-11

I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.
