Black August [Enhanced] [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Rap isn't all about rags to excessive riches anymore. Thanks to die-hard lyricists like Nas and Eminem, hip-hop has finally started to move out of the superficial thrill of material excess and more towards an elevated position of lyrical enlightenment. Although he never surrendered his poetic authenticity, Killah Priest couldn't have picked a better time to present his spiritually minded fourth album, Black August. In an effort to cleanse rap's tainted state, the Brooklyn rapper (born Walter Reed) has created a solid collection of beats, rhymes, and life that not only showcases his dedication to the art of MCing, but also introduces a fresh crop of producers whose rich soundscapes stand strong behind Killah Priest's dense scripture.

"I know Black August's going to inspire rappers to step up their game," assures the Wu-Tang affiliate of his most cohesive audio collection to date. "I think it's time for real artists to come out and put their heart back into it." Ever since Killah Priest was introduced to hip-hop heads in 1997 on the poignant track, "B.I.B.L.E." from his rhyme mentor GZA's legendary Liquid Swords, Priest has flexed his poetic license to fantastic results. He was also a key collaborator on the horror-core cult classic albums Six Feet Deep and The Pick, The Sickle, and The shovel by the Gravediggers which gave Priest the opportunity to form the holy-core collective Sons of Man.

But it was Killah Priest's run with the Wu-Tang Clan that gave him the proper studio training and worldwide exposure he needed to become a bona fide solo artist. In 1998, after touring the continental U.S. and Europe extensively with the Shaolin masters, Priest released his debut, Heavy Mental on Geffen Records to critical acclaim. He followed with two more solo offerings, 2000's View From Masada (MCA), and his independently released Priesthood (Proverbs) both of which were embraced by fans and critics alike.

Today, Killah Priest has his sights set on shaking up the rap game's current events. "I've been put in the dark so long this is my time to come out and brighten up the rap game," explains Priest. "Black August is a phenomenon, it's not a gimmick. It's my heart spilled out on paper." When it comes to lyrics, few can express the trials and tribulations of the daily grind like Priest can. On the innovative stylings of "When I'm Writing", Killah breaks down his personal form of psychotherapy into a series of mentally charged metaphors, "I write rhymes like I'm doing time/Listen, when I hit the pen I start doing a sentence/ I got the flow locked behind each bar." Later on the conceptually driven "Deja Vu", Priest flips a dramatic storyline of a criminal trapped in a horrific turn of events. And "Robbery" perfectly exemplifies Priest's metaphoric vision as he uses an everyday heist to represent his aim to claim what is rightfully his. Pushing past what's expected of him, "Rain" finds Priest on the come-up, spitting with a Midwestern influenced bounce track alongside Main Flow.

With an arsenal of solid tracks and candid lyrics, Killah Priest is in the best shape of his life. With his freshly inked deal with Recon/Artemis, Priest is determined to make serious moves. "It's about time I had the right promotion behind me. A real team of individuals, that's what this album is all about," declares Priest. "That's why I called it Black August. It's gonna be a terror to some, but to others, it'll be a nice day." With his steadfast devotion to enhancing hip-hop culture, Killah Priest is poised to break some new ground and give the game exactly what it's missing.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to kick your spleen up to your face!.......2007-07-24

I must say, I have been a fan of these guys for quite some time now and I was really looking forward to their Sophomore album "Messengers". Usually, when you are highly anticipating something, you can easily be let down and this time, they actually surpassed my expectations and THEN some.

This album is non-stop brutal talent from start to finish! If you are looking for something to pop in your CD player when you are in that mood that you just want to get hyped over some good heavy, fast and talented metal, this is definitely the CD for you.

Trust me, I have thousands of albums, this one definitely resides in my top 3 of all time now. ABR is now definitely above a league of their own. When it comes to this style of metal/music, it has been getting redundant lately, like the phase out of a genre or a fad. They reinvented themselves and the genre.

I highly suggest buying this album to anyone that is into extremely talented metal/hardcore. Hell, even if you are just a drummer, get this and listen to what this guy can do!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-07-24

These guys rock! August Burns Red second album is well done, though I still prefer their first album the most(so far anyways). As I Lay Dying fans will like this CD or vice versa.

3 out of 5 stars well..........2007-07-18

Id be lying if i didnt say that thrill seeker was better in my opinion. I honestly liked the production a lot more on thier debut. Messengers has that high ended sound thats trendy for metalcore bands to use. I felt thats thrill seeker had a much more warmer tone thats i thought complimented their sound. Also I feel the over abundance of breakdowns on this album is a little unessesary. And as a lot of people have already said, pretty much all of them sound remarkebly the same and the overuse of the china makes it all too aparent. It seems to dumb down the album. Im not saying they shouldnt have breakdowns, im saying that they should be used more tastefully. Also as one guy mentioned, Every song does seem to be in the same key. But lets be honest here. so many metalcore bands do that and it bothers me. Its not all bad though. Theres definatley some maturity since TS. But the lack of diversity is what brought it down i think. And dont get me wrong. These guys are very talented. Especially for their age. And they can only grow from here. Id definatley like to see some improvement in the guitar area though. It goes without saying that the drums showcase in this band. I kinda get the feeling that the music could get a lot more complex if the guitars werent so rythmic. As for the vocals, definatly an improvement from their last vocalist. And as for whoever said that singing is emo. They need to shut up. since when did singing suddenly automatically become labeled as emo. Unless its that whiney 15 year old sounding barely able to stay on key singing, Than its not emo. Not everything has to be 'brutal' or 'sick' or whatever. get some variety damnit. by the way, this is my fathers profile or whatever im just using it.

3 out of 5 stars Brutal, however............2007-07-12

Let's start with the positives. The production is terrific, everything sounds crystal clear. This is undoubtedly one of the heaviest albums I've heard to date. The technicality of the guitars and drums is very tight and solid.

Now to the not-so-good. I have to agree with a previous review that states that every single breakdown sounds the same. It's like they wrote 1 breakdown...then changed it by 1 note and used it 11 times. The china is way over used....it's like the drummer thinks he needs to signal to the audience when the breakdowns begin and end. "Well this is the breakdown so i HAVE to use my china..." I don't mean to bad mouth anybody, he's a very talented drummer, but lacks some variety when it comes to writing breakdown beats. I also have to agree with the fact that many of the guitar riffs utilize the same key in every song, resulting in many guitar parts sounding similar. Finally, while the new vocalist is an improvement over the last because of his good range, the vocal patterns can sound thrown together at times.

Overall, like I said...very brutal, but the songs truly lack a lot of individuality and distinction. Maybe that's what they were going for...? Maybe a lot of the hardcore fans do indeed have the "i don't care if it has variety, melody, or harmony, as long as it's heavy" attitude. To each his own I suppose.

2 out of 5 stars sigh.......2007-07-12

ok i never got into their first cd.

this one however has a lot more technical riffs, its a lot cleaner and good production.

HOWEVER, the one thing why i dont like this cd. is the drummer. he's good but her does the same thing during EVERY breakdown. always use his china constantly. i didnt find one breakdown that didnt sound similar cuz their drummer.

and becasue of that, this cd is crappy

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2007-07-11

this is just an awsome album. Barbarian is the best song on it, mostly because of the insanely out of place guitar solo that they amazingly fit into that song without making it sound out of place at all. This album in my opinion is better than the new one which i got at their CD release show at the Chameleon. They are from the same area i am, so that makes me like them even more. my point is just buy the album. you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars The musical person's metal.......2007-01-12

I am not a metalhead. I don't dress in black. I don't list GWAR as one of my favorite bands. I am a fan of good music--that is, music that is good by being complicated, different, beautiful, or otherwise adhering to longstanding rules about what good music is laid out by the critics of the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and so on. The rest of this album's reviews will tell you this is a great album because it's "sweet" or "heavy" or "pumps you up" or the empty quasi-intelligent-sounding moniker "technical". I'm here to tell you that this album is good because the music is good.

All vocals and feeling through listening aside, let's look at the instrumentation. Each song is filled with guitarwork that will leave your head spinning. Instead of relying on the boring drop-D-string pounding with interspersed licks so heavily, ABR's songs are all but driven by complicated riffs the whole song through. How they can play an entire live set filled with songs like this is more than I can comprehend (but I've seen them do it).

The drumming is not the typical double-bass-drum-roll with limited snare and cymbal variety (think As I Lay Dying--which is good, but less complicated). The beats are nothing like anything else. I feel sorry for this drummer's bandmembers trying to figure out how to play with his crazy intricate beats, but I love it. Try to nod your head to any of their songs (those of you who have rythm) and notice that you'll inevitably be off-beat throughout the song because of changing time-signatures!

This album is good not because it gives me something to jump around, kick, scream, and break things to, but because the musicianship is top-of-the-line.

5 out of 5 stars When you're angry, you scream, now that's awesome.......2006-12-04

This album was amazing! But, it's so stupid that they put the entire album in their official website. I really like the song "Speech Impediment", love how it began, love the drumming in this song, and lovethe vocals in this song. The members are so young, and are impressive. this is definetly heavy! "Endoephins" was really brutal, and the drumming was good too. I really love this song!! The drumming in the beginning of "Too Late For Roses" was good too. This band is soooo heavy! I just can't wait for their new album around the early 2007. My favorite songs are tracks 1-5. "Barbarian" is definetly heavy! But, most songs in this album sounded the same, but still the drumming was amazing!! Good job, boys!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST.......2006-08-17

I never write reviews and felt like I just had to for these guys... this cd is simply amazing. The vocals are perfect, the music rips and is technically interesting but not forced technical, the sound and production is killer, the arrangements are excellent, and the flow and groove are all there. There isn't much singing so if you're looking for the melodic singing - not here - but the vocals fit in perfect... I'd compare these guys to Lamb of God but they're a little different - I think they're more musically interesting but love both bands. Definitely check this out. This is a cd that you can listen to over and over and over and never get tired of. One of my favs for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Clean Quality and a fresh sound.......2006-08-09

I never expected to like another christian band again after listening to Demon Hunter :\ However, these guys are one of the more technical metalcore bands out there, these guys have alot of talent and this is a CD that shouldn't be missed, and don't get put off by the fact that their christian, since it doesn't really matter as long as the music is good ;)

4 out of 5 stars good 4th solo album from Priest.......2005-06-03

Killah Priest is back after almost 2 years off (which was my least favorite of his four solo's - 3.5 stars "Priesthood"). Not as good as his great "View from Masada" but still a 4 star album. No Wu affiliates on this one as with his last one, and no Horsemen on this one either. Guests are on only 4 of the 14 songs, and only 1 verse ain't spit from Priest. He still has his deep & religious oriented lyrics like always. Production is good, and he has a few upbeat ones on here. Jahson does 7 songs, Anton Kallisto does 2, Khalil, Godie, G-13, Prose Ipso, Buzzee Boyz all do 1. It has 2 almost classic songs, 4 are ok, the other 8 are good. A must have for fans of Killah Priest.

1 out of 5 stars Aside from the title track..........2004-05-11

This album is not worth picking up. K.P.'s first album, Heavy Mental, is an underrated classic. One of the greatest rap albums I own or have listend to. His style used to be unlike any other MC: deeply paranoid with enough crazy knowledge to back it all up. Unfortuantely, Killah Priest drops his old style in favor of chart-admiring rhymes. Whereas K.P. used to rhyme about the struggles and horrors of urban life, he now rhymes about how great he is compared to everyone else. This may have been true a few years ago, but now that he feels he has to say it, it has lost its bite. The title track on this album is amazing, the rest is forgettable. It's all about money and women now--cliches in the hip-hop world. Perhaps he has run out of things to say, because there is barely an interesting moment on Black August.

    5 out of 5 stars Horsemen.......2004-03-16

Priest is so dope and sick its scary thow this cd may have more commercial appeal it is very sick i am not gonna say its the best because all of killah priest's cds are disturbingly ill buy its worth the purchase if your not a fan and want to become one i suggest Killah Priest-Priesthood or Heavy Mental

4 out of 5 stars Mad Props to Black August.......2003-11-17

Its like some true Hip-Hop fans have forgot that Priest is putting out sick solo licks every year for three years in a row. If there is a fine line between mainstream and underground Hip-Hop this latest release from the Priest is it. At times Black August sounds like the good ol' Wu-Tang beats and other times sounds like MTv Bait. That's been the feel of every Hip-Hop release in the past three years. Ending on a positive note the true ill' tracks really stand out in this release and is worth the buy. (the ill' tracks don't feel commercial.)

    4 out of 5 stars moving up.......2003-10-13

I thought this CD was very good. The Brotha raps clearly which is rare. Your stuff does not have to be loud to be good. The lyrics are on point and Black August is the Baddest cut.

    5 out of 5 stars Not Bad!.......2007-03-08

Hailing from Finland, Omnium Gatherum could best be described as Enthrone Darkness Triumphant/Stormblast-era Dimmu Borgir with some Insomnium. Combining soft, lush keyboards with furious riffs and drumming, Omnium Gatherum are poised to be one of Finlands best. While there sophmore album was a bit of a let down, Spirits and August Light is absolutely amazing.

Favorite tracks include Deathwhite, which cuts straight into a nice heavy, sludgy riff, the slow and bass-heavy Perfumed Garden, and the chaotic Amor Tonight, but I did not once skip.

If your fans of pure melodic death metal, and are wanting to get into Finnish metal that isnt CHildren of Bodom, get this, along with Kalmahs Swamplord, Insomniums Since the Day it all Came Down, and Sentenced's North From Here.

5 out of 5 stars Melodic Death Metal?.......2005-07-01

This is without a doubt the best melodic death album I have heard. I tend to be more into the prog death style, like Opeth and Edge of Sanity (see my reviews for those if you're interested). This album walks a fine line between melodic and progressive death, but it is not as much about the complexity as Opeth and Edge of Sanity are. This is not to say the songs are not complex, but that they are more complex in the thrash vain: riffs are repeated a few times, the song moves on to the next one, and maybe there will be a return to a previous riff later.

The songs are all perfect lengthwise. I can understand why some people might be bogged down in prog death metal (Opeth's songs are usually around ten minutes long, and Edge of Sanity's two songs are both around 40 minutes!).

There are no clean vocals; the music is relentlessly crushing yet melodic at the same time. A difficult feat, as most melodic death metal bands have proven time and time again, often sounding like they are trying too hard to be melodic or brutal or both. Omnium Gatherum does not sound like they are trying to be either. They sound like a melodic death metal band playing music for the sake of playing music rather than trying to fit into any preconceived musical niche, if that makes sense.

    5 out of 5 stars Omnium Gatherum.......2004-06-15

This album is genius, So if your a true fan of melodic death(not a fan of "melodic" "hardcore" or nu-"metal"), then you must have this album.

5 out of 5 stars 9.5/10 - Lost faith in melodic death metal? Get this album!.......2003-05-26

As originally written (by me) for RoyalCarnage.com:

Every so often a band comes along that renews your faith in an entire genre of music. In this case, OMNIUM GATHERUM is just such a band, and the genre is melodic death metal. I'll admit to it being melodic death that got me "back" into heavy metal in the first place, some years ago. And some of my favorite albums of all time are melodic death metal albums, but it's a genre that has always run the risk of becoming stagnant or too far-removed from its essence. It's a tough style of metal to play for these very reasons. However, OMNIUM GATHERUM, a Finnish sextet made up of self-proclaimed JUDAS PRIEST, AT THE GATES, KATATONIA and DEATH fans, have created just such an album to sweep away the melodic death doldrums.

OMNIUM rarely conforms to anyone's preconceived notions about what is and is not acceptable within their chosen musical path. It's not at all unfeasible, nor is it unlikely that an OMNIUM GATHERUM song begin with somber, moody, OPETH-ian notes, then triple the pace to match the aggressive, phlegm-gargling vocals, and finally peak with a scorching, dizzying lead guitar crescendo. Not only is such a song pattern not unfeasible, it happens. Especially on "The Perfumed Garden," which is about as close to a perfect song as has been created in recent memory. And even the weaker moments on the album would be highlights for lesser bands. At their core, OMNIUM GATHERUM is indeed a melodic death metal band. There are plenty of moments that will remind the listener of the strongest DARK TRANQUILLITY or SOILWORK songs. But they're regularly more than that, far more. It's almost as if they've taken the best elements of all their influences and combined them into one seamlessly well-oiled machine.

Spirits And August Light is a moving, emotional record. It's uplifting yet dark and depressing. It's angry, dangerous, foreboding and a harbinger of worse things to come. It's happy, energetic and supercharged with passion. It's all of these things and more, and will certainly adapt to what you want it to be. Anyone who's been previously bored with melodic death metal, anyone who's looking for the shining light in a sea of monotonous grey, anyone who desires to listen more closely and transcend what you knew before, take heed. You will be overwhelmed at the greatness before you.

4 out of 5 stars Sauce Piquante-Spicy Zydeco Blues From A Louisiana Legend.......1999-09-04

If the late Clifton Chenier was truly the "King of Zydeco Music," then Lynn August must be the "Duke." This Legend of Louisiana Zydeco Blues truly delivers the goods on this 1993 release. Lynn's "Rockin Accordion" will lift you out of your chair. His cover of the 50's classic "Slipin'and Slidin'" will get you rockin. But it does'nt stop here. Sauce Piquante features traditional french accopella sounds in the jure' fashion (a sort of Louisiana street corner doo-wop). But the heart of Lynn's Sauce Piquante is his delivery of the blues. Track after track of his gutsy accordion sounds coupled with one of the clearest voices in Zydeco music today results in a compilation of some of the best Zydeco and Blues music on record. Compared to such greats as Ray Charles and Fats Domino, Lynn August is in a class by himself. What his eyes can't see, his fingers and voice make up for. For true Zydeco enthusiasts, Lynn August is a rare find. His delivery and style is truly at the heart of Zydeco Blues music today. Sauce Piquante is a rare classic...right up there with the artist himself.

3 out of 5 stars Not Listened To.......1999-04-01

For those of you who don't know, Lynn August is a man, not a girl. I heard the track "Jaywalkin" on a blues organ compilation CD, so I assumed that he played the B-3 organ. I was wrong. I saw this CD in a store showing him playing the "Accordian", his main instrument. His style of playing is Cajan music, not Jazz or Blues like he played in the compilation CD. I put it back in the rack unheard. Apparently, he played 1 song on the organ and the rest on the accordian.
