Make no mistake, Zakk Wylde remains one of the most invigorating guitar players in rock & roll today. On Shot to Hell, he continues his fascination with the Alice in Chains-esque grunge that he and the rest of BLS whipped up for 2005's Mafia. As convincing as Wylde's riffing can be on tunes such as "Concrete Jungle," "Blacked Out World" (a track that imagines a darker version of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion"), and "Faith Is Blind," you can't help but get the feeling you've heard this before--whether on previous Black Label outings or on the records that Wylde has made with Ozzy Osbourne. The slow-build ballad "New Religion" and its stylistic cousin "Sick of It All" suggest that Wylde may be wise to put a little more distance between albums and try to focus on making the all-killer, no-filler album he so clearly has inside of him. --Jedd Beaudoin

2 out of 5 stars collecting dust somewhere.......2007-04-17

After the crappy Mafia, things continue to get worse for BLS. After 15 strait listens this album is only barley listionable. Some of the ballads are ok, but that seems to be all this album has. I dont know what the hell happened to ZAKK after 1919 Eternal, but since then the band just went down hill.

5 out of 5 stars Shot to Hell.......2007-04-16

I was a bit skeptical on buying this album due to the rewiews it was given on Amazon. I bought Mafia because I really liked Fire It Up, while not expecting too much. I loved Ozzy era Zakk Wylde, so I figured I would get it so I could enjoy some healthy guitar playing. I was surprised at the quality metal that Zakk was laying down and Mafia got me interested in BLS. The next album on the list was this album but even though I wanted to get it, I was hesitant because of the beat down it was recieving by these reviewers. I think that the album is great, and I think the first 5 or 6 tracks on the album made the money I spent worth it. If you are a fan of BLS I recommend getting this album. So far any investment I have made in BLS has come up worth it and this album was no let down.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2007-03-31

Great cd, just like anything Zack does! All his music is good! There are more ballads than usual but they're all good!

1 out of 5 stars I'd give a negative number if I could........2007-03-21

This album is unbearable. Your ears will bleed. Your pets will have seizures. There is more creativity in these Amazon reviews than on this garbage album.

Every year Zakk releases a new album that sucks even more than the one before it. Even when those of us who still want to like BLS (that have been around since Pride and Glory) don't believe that's even possible anymore- BAM! Zakk hits you with another uninspired 40 minutes of hurt.

To the BLS street team, crew, and label that puts all the positive reviews up on here(no sane human being would ever like this album if they weren't being financially compensated to do so)- convince Zakk to take a few years off. Give him some drugs. Have him try another album in 2010.

If you really want to waste $15, throw quarters into a well one at a time and wish that Zakk wasn't destroying the memory of No More Tears and Sonic Brew with these atomic waste albums.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-02-16

Zakk Wylde has been churning out releases under his Black Label Society banner every year or so now for a while, and "Shot to Hell" marks the frequent Ozzy Osbourne member's debut on Roadrunner Records. Sadly though, "Shot to Hell" is a disappointing venture for Zakk, as a majority of songs sound, dare I say it, generic. And as much as I hate to say it, some of the material found here just sounds plain old uninspired. Now don't get me wrong, I love Zakk and BLS and just about everything the guy has released since Pride & Glory; but "Shot to Hell" marks a big step down in quality. Songs like "Concrete Jungle", "Last Goodbye", and "Blood is Thicker Than Water" are so familiar sounding that you'll swear you heard them on any of Zakk's Spitfire releases. Now that I've gotten all that out of the way, while the album itself is a disappointment, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. "Nothing's the Same" and "Lead Me to Your Door" are solid, and there is some nice shredding and hammering chords that Zakk and BLS are known for, but one can't help feeling that they've heard all this before. It's a shame that "Shot to Hell" is a disappointment; but maybe it's a clue that it's time for Zakk to take some time off before recording again instead of pumping out release after release year after year. Worth checking out for BLS and metal fans, but don't expect anything great like we've gotten before.

    5 out of 5 stars Velcome!.......2007-05-04

If you're going to criticize Venom by saying that they lack musical finesse, you might as well criticize Ramones for the same reason. Go ahead - - Venom gladly welcomes such pinheads to the place they should darned well know they can go. And I bet they like Ramones, too.

5 out of 5 stars old school kick a$! metal.......2007-01-25

If you're a fan of old school death and want to hear a huge influence on almost every extreme band than look no further. Venom may not have been the greatest musicians in the world but what they did they did extremely well. Namely pissing alot of parents off and offending every bible thumper that saw this album, notice I say saw and not heard, as I'm sure the holy rollers s?!t themselves when they saw the cover art. When me and my wife were dating her holy roller aunt use to come over to try and "save" me, so I'd slap this cassette (I'm old!) on the stereo and turn it to "11" (ha,ha) you would think she was on fire as fast as she would run out of the house....ahhh memories! anyway, if you like old school thrash, death, black, white purple or whatever color they call it nowadays you need to pick this album up and take it for a spin, give it a few listens and then move on to their second album "Black Metal!!" But probably don't look any farther than that as the magick(?) disapears after that one. Although I haven't listened to "metal black" yet. oh well, some other day. Now I have to get back to playing my cardboard cut out guitar along to number of the beast, c-ya!

1 out of 5 stars Black Metal Made By Sub-par retards.......2006-12-31

Venom are total posers. Anybody who believes the stupid things these "Musicians" say are imbeciles. None of the "songs" on this album are worth remembering because VENOM ARE NOT REALLY SATANISTS! They are posers. They pose as satanists, thats the definition of posers. They did this to trick dumbasses into buying records. Welcome to Hell is a boring listening experience that a 12 year old would find scary. People were stupid back then for believing that Cronos was a satanist. Venom < Warrant

    5 out of 5 stars O My.........2006-12-18

This is a bit of a mix of punk and 60's into 70's metal isn't it? I can drink tea with this, it'S Brittish. This is really considered one of the first Satanic bands. If not the first. tongue and cheek songs about tearing babies and is there a line or something about "tearing into her flesh I insist"? Or some such thing on one of their albums? Punk Bass and heavy trippy rock, one of the best albums ever I'm afrAid. A teacher would have been hit in the back of the head with a pencil propelled by a rubber band in the early days of their upbringing..Evil in League with Satan I guess. I Love this, and I'm afraid I have to give it quite a good rating. Tea. I think it's time..

5 out of 5 stars The Godfathers of extreme metal.......2006-09-23

Yes, as you probably know this album kicked started the wonderful genre of extreme metal. So you like Suffocation? You like Emperor? You like SLAYER? If you didn't have this band you might not have those other great bands, Venom are basically the "Atari/Nintendo" of EM. Everything that is METAL is here too; pure evilness, chock full of Satanic lyrics, rebellion and angst, raw production (probably the rawest album at the time in 1981), and even chicks! They took that "live life in fast lane" attitude of Motorhead that I love and added their blend of evil that had never even been fathomed. The album may have a few flaws but it is one of the top 10 most groundbreaking metal albums ever.

These songs are awesome people. First you have Sons of Satan which is evil speed metal goodness, the title track with that seething voice of Cronos and even has a nifty instrumental interlude in Mayhem With Mercy which has a very eerie and ambient feel to it, perhaps it was can be called a precursor to future ambient black metal bands. Other highlights are Poison with sick riffs and great lyrics about being with wh*res (which I have experience with), the early BM classics Witching Hour with it's sweet solo and catchiness and my personal fave here IN LEAGUE WITH SATAN! F*ckin' right doggie! The song comes complete with a backwards Satanic intro, tribal-like drums, and slow brooding riffs. I literally feel I'm 'south of heaven' when this song is one. One last thing worthy of noting is the opening riff to the album's closer I believe to the HEAVIEST riff in 1981 hands down.

The album is another rarity in the fact that the bonus track DO NOT BLOW! Yes, it's true! You get the usual group of 'demo versions' of songs but you also get cool singles from the day like Bloodlust.

All in all a sick album, and of course the 'E' word comes to mind. You know what word I'm talking about. Go get it to see the roots of extreme metal. I also agree with Marxist Matt that their next album Black Metal is much better, however.

P.S. Ok so it's not trve kvlt black metal but so what? This OWNS most kvlt junk I've heard.

OMG I actually downloaded this album before i bought it.... After I listened to the mp3s i almost immediatly ordered this CD hahaha VERRYY Big improvement over the debute "Beware of the Heavens"! The vocals are amazing! The guitar work is totally killer and Kim sings like she will kick you in the nuts hahaha. Overall VERY good cd... but could be better (hence the 4) Comeon guys you have Alexi I know you can do sooo much better! I await the next cd anxiously :-)

4 out of 5 stars Well written songs from Finland.......2002-09-21

I see Sinergy as a cross between Children of Bodom of Nightwish, and I think most people would agree with that. There is a style that seems to appear in all Finnish metal; mainly fast, symphonic choruses, with European folk roots. I started listening to Sinergy because I am a huge Children of Bodom fan, and I wanted to check out Alexi's other band. The Children are probably my third fav. band behind Maiden and Symphony X. This album is pretty good. I like how the songs are written. Clever melodies just like the Children. If you like the Finnish metal style, Children of Bodom and Nightwish are by far the best. Sinergy has a great sound though. Some people don't like female vocals but I think it is very creative and ads a great flavor to metal.

4 out of 5 stars good gothic metal.......2002-07-10

Good songs and the singer does well for a female doing metal. I could certainly live without her two annoying little scream intros before the first two songs. The band is tight and talented. Reminds me of iced earth only the songs are just better. It strikes me odd though, gothic song after song about "the empire shall be defended, the 4th world is thy magical kingdom, his majestys iron hand hath guided us unto glory" then all of a sudden the last song is some teenage style "oh baby baby...dont leave me hangin on the telephone". Wassup wit dat???

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Metal!!!!!!.......2001-12-18

Heaven and Hell is one of the funnest, well written heavy power metal albums I have heard. The musicianship is outstanding (the Children of Bodem guitar play absolughtly wails!!) and the female vocals are the best since Patt Benitar. Metal lives!!!

    1 out of 5 stars sinergy.......2001-12-13

This is a mediocre album at best. The music is ok but the singer really (...) - voice is sloppy. That's what has ruined the whole cd.

2 out of 5 stars Judas Priest Hell Bent For Metal.......2000-02-26

This CD isn't great. There's too much death metal, where the singing is just brutal. There are a few good songs: Sentinel, Beyond the Realms of Death, Seeler, and Desert Plains. Some other songs, were simply an embarrassment. The vocalist's attempt to hit the high note in "The Ripper," is nothing more than ridiculous. The guitar solo in the beginning of "Metal Meltdown" was omitted. The worst song, is probably "Electric Eye," performed by "Scary German Guy." Not only was the "Hellion" left out, but the singing sucked, and the guitar solo was HORRIBLY butchered. I would only recommend this CD if you're a die hard priest fan who doesn't mind bad vocals.

Something Like The 1970's Were 1978's HELL BENT FOR LEATHER & STAIND CLASS and inside the 1980's Were 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGENANCE Was No Real in 1986's TURBO and the 1987 PRIEST...LIVE! and 1989's RAM IT DOWN and PAINKILLER in 1990.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a tribute cd.......1999-07-30

I have to say, I enjoyed this cd. The only problem-way too much boring death metal. At least some bands (like Scary German Guy) were willing to mix it up a little bit and show some originality.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Legends of Metal CD's, but pretty cool..........1999-07-14

Like most tribute albums, a mix of decent, great, and lousy. Low points...Sanctorum, Scary German Guy, and Aurora Borealis. High points...Angel Corpse's great death metal version of "Eat Me Alive," Winter's Bane's version of "Steeler," Steel Prophet's take on "Dreamer Deceiver," and especially Vital Remains' tuned down but otherwise just about note-perfect version of "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"

Recommended if you're a Priest fan and also happen to like death metal.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, people listen to that?.......2007-04-18

I have to agree with A Kid's Review, being a long time Sabbath fan, that "stuff" is like the worst excuse for music I may have ever heard. I would give it a negative infinity if I could. If Ozzy was dead, he would no doubt be rolling in his grave! Wow!

    1 out of 5 stars Really bad.......2006-07-01

I can't figure out why some people like this album. The songs are pathetic even when not compared to the originals. I highly recomend buying the first Nativity in Black instead of this. Even Naitivty in Black 2 is better than this crap. I wish I could rate this lower than one star. Take my advice as I am a true Black Sabbath fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Hell Rules.......2002-05-11

Both Hell Rules albums are the best black sabbath tributes. This cd is awesome! All the tracks have equal awesomeness but i really think the best goes to Hostile Intent or Coffin Texts. This tribute also rules for that fact that it covers 3 eras of Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, and Gillian. All these great death metal/hardcore make these classic songs really good because THEY'RE SO HEAVY! I think on Blood Coven's track, "N.I.B." they change the lyrics for the chorus, but it still sounds good..."im going to kill, i just got to kill" hahah Please buy today and support these awesome underground bands and enjoi!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent death metal tribute disc.......2002-04-02

This CD is really good, these for the most part unheard of death metal hardcore bands remake Sabbaths upbeat hard rock songs into heavy death metal songs. This is the best sabbath tribute album i have heard. My personal favorite is Hate Theory's brutal version of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. The other songs are really awesome but Hate Theory just really did this nicely with their lead singer screaming on top and their bassist singing in a low melodic voice in the background, i suggest any sabbath or any death metal fan to buy this

5 out of 5 stars Best Sabbath Tribute.......1999-12-30

To me the best Sabbath tribute, it doesn't just stay with the same old Ozzy songs and does two Dio Sabbath era songs and a Gillan era song as well. The Ozzy Sabbath songs sound better with death metal vocals than Ozzy nasal singing. Society I's Who Are You? is amazing and light years beyond the original. Debauchery's Paranoid with full growl vocals is also really enjoyable. I have 4 Sabbath tributes and this is the one I actually play.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BAND RULES!!!.......2004-01-12

This record is killer! Carpathian Forest have the whole rock and roll/ Black Metal sound down! They totally wipe the floor with bands like Darkthrone, Burzum etc..... because they can actually play their instruments! Carpathian Forest capture all the vibe and dark atmosphere but they do it with ferocious power and unlike some of the other bands in this genre......they're really trying to push the envelope! There is one other thing that really comes through on this record too.....their sense of humor! I don't know about you but I'm really sick of all these "too serious" black metal records that have been coming out lately.......I think Satan is laughing so hard that the walls of Hell are about to crumble! When you look at it like that.........this record becomes way more scary

2 out of 5 stars Better than Nativity in Black 2, but is still bad...........2006-04-06

Just for hardcore fans of Black Sabbath (really?) who also enjoys death metal..hey wait a minute i like sabbath and i like death metal so...for whom is this cd? the only sabbath tribute is worth your money is Nativity in Black 1 (nativity in black 2 is the worstest).... don't buy this...really....

3 out of 5 stars Good. Not for me........2003-06-13

I am a huge sabbath fan and a huge metal fan but this is a bit too heavy for me. I love the musicon here but the vocals are too much. I don't mind hearing brutal screaming on a track or two, but after ten minutes it's like "Do Something Else". I guess this good if you're a death metal fan and can't stand nu metal. If you're a nu metal fan and can't stand death metal pick up Nativity in Black or it's sequel. Being a fan of nu metal and death metal I can say that both are good. My only problem is with the vocals. Sepultura's version of "Symptom of the Universe" is actually just as heavy as Evil Incarnate's.Sabbath For Life!

5 out of 5 stars Hell Rules 2.......2002-02-26

This tribute is awesome. These underground death/black metal bands really bring new definition to these classic Sabbath songs. There is not one song on there that is not good. My favorite track is definately Vital Remains' "War Pigs" It is just about note-perfect, except that it is down-tuned, also it sounds incredible with those deep as hell vocals, great job guys. other standout tracks - Evil Incarnate "Symptom of The Universe" Nocturne - "Supernaut" Acheron "Black Sabbath" . all these songs are great, the only one people will probaly less like is Aurora Borealis' "After Forever" , i only say this because the production wasnt the best, but hell, death metal sabbath songs sound extremely good in raw production. Buy this if you can mind death metal vocals becus thats why so many people dislike both Hell Ruls tributes, its not a bad album at all, they just have a problem with the vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sabbath Tribute CD.......2001-10-05

This Sabbath Tribute CD is great. It's much better than Nativity in Black 2 and Masters of Misery. The music sounds great. But anyone who listens for the first time may not like some of the vocals. They have a black and death metal sound to them. So if your a black metal or a death metal fan you'll like this CD. The best songs on the CD are: Snowblind,Hand of Doom,Johny Blade, and Symptom of the Universe. I recommend it to any die hard Sabbath fan.

1 out of 5 stars Tribute Or Violation?.......2001-04-10

I am getting tired of tributes. Nativity In Black I was o.k., but now I think every metal band on the planet tries to make some tribute to their own wallet. If they want to make a tribute to Black Sabbath then they should have a cover version on their own CD. But this is just making money with the name Black Sabbath.

5 out of 5 stars A Lot Of Hard To Find Music In One Package.......2007-06-02

Having fronted the now legendary band VENOM from 1979 to 1988, Cronos embarked on his solo career and came up with a lot of great tunes. This new CD contains every song from the first 2 albums; "Dancing in the Fire" and "Rock and Roll Disease". Both were released in the early 90's and sadly failed to reach any acclaim. However, both of those albums are very good and should be owned by any VENOM fan. "From Hell To The Unknown" also contains all the re-recorded VENOM songs from the Cronos album "Venom". These are very tight versions of old metal classics with different musicians. Also, as an added bonus, CD 2 closes with a number of demo recordings from the record "Calm Before the Storm". That album was put out in 1987 if I'm not mistaken and was the last VENOM record to feature Cronos on vocals and bass. I would think these are rare demos because this particular era of VENOM is ignored for the most part. The only tracks that are missing from this collection are 3 songs from an as yet unreleased CRONOS album which you can get if you get a copy of the CRONOS album, "Venom" which was released in 1995. As I mentioned previously, all the CRONOS CDs are hard to find. They are also out of print so this 2 CD set will more than satisfy your craving for Cronos. I myself have all of the CRONOS albums so I can wear my spiked wristbands and bullet belt with pride..........can you?MMV

      5 out of 5 stars Metal at it's best.......2007-02-13

Whether or not you're into Venom, if you like thrash then there is no excuse for NOT having this album! An excellent cross-section of Chronos solo career, which is very underrated IMO.

5 out of 5 stars From Venom To The Unknown: .......2006-11-29

For any Venom fan, this is a very excellent 2 cd set.
This Anthology covers everything that Cronos did while he was away from the band Venom. From 92-95 Conrad Lant took off in a new fresh musical direction. The first album he released was "Dancing in the Fire", which was, a departure from the Venom that freaked everyone out in the early eighties. It was a metal masterpiece, delivering such favorites as "Vampyr", and "I'll Be Back". Then He released "Rock 'N' Roll Disease", and later "Venom". While the second album was new material, "Venom" found the band trying their hands at the Venom classics.

The Fist CD starts out with a Intro tape from the concerts, and starts the music off with a version of "In League with Satan". The highlights n the first disc are "Lost & Found" and "7 Gates Of Hell"

The second disc has some cool new(er) songs like "Sexploitation" and "Midnight Eye" that I have never heard before. These songs are almost what you could call "poppy" but still VERY heavy at the same time. The melodies in these songs remind me of what bands like Avenged Sevenfold are doing these days.

Either way you cut it, "Hell To The Unknown" is definitely worth checking out.
For fans of the first three Venom albums, you might want to listen first to see if its your cup of tea, but if you enjoy Venom as much as I do, this should be a no-brainer purchase.
