3 out of 5 stars Sound of Music - 40th Anniv. Special Edition.......2007-08-06

The extra tracks (at the end) of interviews with cast members are annoying, and you most certainly would not want to listen to them more than once.

5 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Sound of Music.......2007-07-29

Our six-month old daughter loves the sound of music, especially Julie Andrews and the cast of The Sound of Music--she and we think it is truly wonderful!!

5 out of 5 stars a classic.............2007-05-17

I can still remember the first time I heard this soundtrack. It was on my family's turntable. We happened to own the original vinyl addition. THE SOUND OF MUSIC (AKA THE SOUND OF MUSIC, in the words of Christopher Plummer who was Captain Von Trapp, in the film) is a classic musical that has really spanned the generations of young and old viewers, for (more than) four decades. For starters, the music is catchy ("The Sound of Music," "These Are A Few of My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss," as just a few examples). Secondly, this cast was just great! Though, I have a personal preference toward the original cast, with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. Nonetheless, Julie Andrews is great here. What a beautiful soprano voice.

This edition features bonus transfers of interviews with those involved in bringing THE SOUND OF MUSIC to the screen. What's more, this is the complete soundtrack (instrumental and music featuring vocals is included here). Definitely a "must buy" for true fans.

5 out of 5 stars Sound of Music--Still Great.......2007-05-13

I loved the music when it came on the big screen. I loved it on LP and cassette. Now, I love it even more on CD. The joy I get from listening to it while driving is wonderful. It sends me back to fond family memories. This is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Sound of Music.......2007-05-07

The Hannah Montana special edition soundtrack arrives so coolly p ackaged and with such a bonanza of extras that it might even induce budget-conscious tweens who already own the original to break open their piggy banks a second time. All the same hyper-charged, deliriously fun songs are here--the Radio Disney hit "If We Were a Movie" and the speaker-hazardous "Pumpin' up the Party" included--but so is a new number, "Nobody's Perfect," that again reaches out with a message from Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah, without mitigating the sky-high mood. Toe-tapping, indeed, is mandatory. Throughout. Other deluxe-edition tack-ons include signed snaps of the double-life-leading superstar, a certificate for a free "This Is the Life" ringtone, and a starter course of celebrity dish: in addition to a concert sliver featuring "Nobody's Perfect" on disc two (the DVD), Miss Cyrus leads her breathless fans on chummy, if minimally revealing, backstage tour. --Tammy La Gorce

This album is better than the 2nd one. This is the house favorite! this album is more suitable for smaller kids.

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD for Tweens and Teens.......2007-06-13

I like the songs by Hannah Montana on this CD because they don't talk about boys and relationships but are focused more on a positive self image. There are a few songs at the end by other artists which aren't as good.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Go Wrong.......2007-06-04

If you (or your kids) are (bubblegum) pop music, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, or Disney fans, this is definitely a soundtrack for you. Like the regular soundtrack, this 2-Disc Special Edition Hannah Montana CD is full of fun, get-your-body-moving songs that kids and adults can relate to. The bonus track and the extra features (backstage secrets hosted by Miley Cyrus herself, a live performance of "Nobody's Perfect," and 4 polaroid-style pictures) make it well worth shelling out that extra ten dollars.

This is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars sick re-issue but yet 1 flaw.......2007-07-28

not really a flaw either. he re-recorded Kookies. New beat, new flow, same lyrics. everything else is like the original. (For those in NYC... u can get the original at ur local New York Public Library... for FREE). the album comes wrapped in a candy wrap and the label is scratch n sniff... also comes with a MM..Food? sticker and a the promo poster for MM..Food Drive Tour. the dvd is well worth it as well... over an hour of footage of DOOM on tour. perfect for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Raw & eccentric Hip-Hop at its best.......2007-07-25

MF DOOM is an MC/producer genius. MF DOOM's flowetry blended with his great beats makes for a truly unforgettable journey with the super villain. The entire set of tracks does not disappoint and even the guest MC appearances are worth noting. The album's context deals with food entirely and MF tears up the mic making clever comparisons eclectically to food. If you are an MF DOOM fan, definitely obtain a copy of this album. Plus, the re-released version of the album comes with a bonus DVD of the Mm...Food tour. This CD is a bit more refined than other MF DOOM/other alias releases; the album is on par with the DangerDoom release which is also a modern classic.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless Doom ..........2007-07-24

As a relatively new MF Doom fan, I was excited to add 'MM .. Food?' to my collection, along with The Mouse and the Mask, Madvilliany, and Live From Planet X. Although it is hard to compare his albums to one another, this particular one really stands out from the others. Doom drops pure lyrical genius all over this album, with witty comments and puns that directly relates life to food. It's a fun album that truly showcases his quick and flawless delivery.

The album begins with 'Beef Rapp', which is a half instrumental/sampled song until he finally decides to start rapping two minutes into it. In this particular song his scruffy voice compliments the heavy and loud superhero sounding beat. His lyrics are impressive: ""Heart attack, heart disease ... ain't no holding back once arteries start to squeeze." 'Hoe Cakes' uses a spit sounding beat with a female sample saying "Super" throughout the chorus - interesting mix. 'Potholderz,' featuring Count Bass D, is a decent song with an average beat ... however Doom really begins to shine in 'One Beer' and 'Deep Fried Frenz.' Both of these songs show his quick and witty delivery and interesting lyrics. Unfortunately, both of these songs have annoying beats that make it rather difficult to listen to. 'Poo Putt Platter' through 'Fig Leaf' are all instrumentals, however it's worth the waiting because Doom shows up in tip top form for the remainder of the album. 'Kon Kane' makes a departure from the annoying beats mentioned previously by introducing a quick piano melody with what sounds like Space Invaders taser blasts. 'Guinnesses' features Angelika and 4ize, and this song is one of the best tracks on the album. It's a unique and addicting Rockabilly beat, all delivered by Angelika. Doom is only present during the chorus where he relates "War wounds, morphine, and veterans" to marrying and trying to tame a female! "Some chicks are just too hard to wife!" In 'Kon Queso' Doom picks a perfect match of beat, melody, and lyrics. It is a really quick pulsating beat with exceptional lyrics. "When it rain it sure do thunderstorm / I got more rhymes in the summer than musty underarms." He really shines; and it continues to get better. After 'Rapp Snitch,' a cheesy filler song, Doom continues to blow the album up with 'Vomitspit.' Not only does this song sport a crazy beat, his lyrics don't get any better. "The mask is like Jason / They told the place not to let the basket type case in / He could be some kind of wacko / Waiting for the chance to heat the pipes like a crack hoe." And finally, the last song caps off a great album. 'Kookies' has a beat that you just want to row your windows down and cruise to. This song is an interesting one in which Doom refers to trying to track down females online to his cookie consumption habits over a brass sounding beat. "Catch sugar fits every time he sees a nice pair of / Chips ahoy double chocolate chunk / Something with the bubble and the junk in the trunk"

Overall, the album is great. It took me a few times through to really apprecaite how well thought the album is. It truly grows on you. I find it interesting how he relates different stuff to food. There are quite a few songs that are just samples on the album; in fact, almost every song has samples and cartoons mixed towards the end. This frustrates some people, however it mostly all tells a story - why he wears his mask. This doesn't take away from the album in any form or fashion.

"I elect Doom master of the Universe!"

Listening to this soundtrack at full blast one often feels as if the Spartan and Persian forces are coming right at you, then ferociously pummeling your eardrums--and this is meant as a compliment. Tyler Bates's score is basically a modern update of the battle classic to end all battle classics: Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. On the opening cue "To Victory," Bates throws in everything he's got: powerful choral singing, massive percussion (you can almost feel the weight of those Japanese taiko drums), and of course an otherworldly female voice. All these elements are then parceled out over the following tracks, taking turns to dominate the cues, and sometimes coming together again in majestic shows of force--the music can sound absolutely humongous at times ("Submission," "Come and Get Them," "A God King Bleeds"). The most interesting development is the use throughout of electronic treatment; even when the technique is applied subtly, it's very efficient in adding a spooky dimension to the album's very sonic texture. And while you'd think an electric guitar would feel incongruous in a movie set in 480 BC, it actually injects a screaming sense of urgency into a track such as "The Hot Gates." As for that aforementioned female voice, it belongs to Iranian-born, L.A.-based Azam Ali (of the duo Vas), who makes essential contributions on tracks like "Cursed by Beauty" and "Goodbye My Love." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Epic, emotional and inventive describe the action drama 300 and also its score. Written and produced by Tyler Bates (Dawn of the Dead, Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, and Slither), Music From The Motion Picture 300 boasts a sweeping palette, embracing a tonal foundation unfamiliar to studio films. Orchestral and choral, 300 features the haunting, exotic vocals of Azam Ali, featured in world music groups Niyaz and Vas. Special Edition Includes: Deluxe Packaging, 3 Two-Sided Trading Cards and 16 Page Full Color Booklet.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars emotionally stirring.......2007-06-12

An exotic and emotionally moving soundtrack that helped drive this extremely powerful and entertaining film. I suppose that I'm giving it a four because, to me, the Gladiator soundtrack with Lisa Gerrard set the bar so high. I did enjoy the way that this one so effectively wove ancient sounds with modern rock sounds. The movie and its soundtrack are true works of art.

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack to the movie.......2007-06-02

This soundtrack has a unique sound to it and it really adds to the movie. There is a good mix between more fast pace and softer tracks also. If you like instrumental music that is both fast paced and slow, then you'll love this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars I knew I needed this about two minutes into the movie........2007-05-17

Great stuff. I'm no orchestral expert, but it sounds fantastic. I expected more heavy pieces, but I guess those sections seemed longer in the movie. Good music to drive to, though it's over quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect music for the film of the year!.......2007-05-13

A must have for fans of the film.

2 out of 5 stars 300 special edition.......2007-05-13

the pack is very nice but the music is a bit high, I have not seen the film yet, maybe after I see the film I may apriciate it more.

Josh Groban is making it hard for anybody who can't say "classical crossover" without smirking to maintain an acceptable level of snobbery. Awake, his third studio disc and arguably his most personal--he co-wrote four tracks and favors his native English over Italian--boasts as many bold names as any tricked-out hip-hop disc: Dave Matthews, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Imogen Heap, and Herbie Hancock contribute in various capacities, and a slew of behind-the-scenes collaborators best known for their work in mainstream pop circles deepen the dimensions of a style widely considered claustrophobic. For all the studio doors that got opened to create Awake, though, Groban's signature sound never once slipped out to take the air; "the voice"--that hypnotic, spun-silk wonder of an instrument--is as concentrated as ever, and Awake, in addition to showing off its many splendors, serves as a vehicle for parading its versatility around. While "Un Giorno Per Noi," the deeply romantic theme to the 1968 film Romeo E Giulietta, delivers the Groban that fueled the sale of 16 million previous discs to soft-hearted fans, "Machine," with Hancock, gives up a new form of funk: dignified, classy, and surprisingly unstiff. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

The Josh Groban phenomenon continues with Awake, his third studio album. Both of the extraordinary singer's first two studio discs have been certified five times platinum, with his most recent, 2003's Closer, charting #1 pop. His uplifting music rises ever higher on Awake. The Special Edition features two bonus audio tracks on the CD, and a DVD featuring "The Making of Awake" video piece.

2 out of 5 stars Awake-Groban.......2007-05-13

The music is to the ear well done but it does not move me therefore it bored me. This man has a beautiful voice but the collection lacked pizzazz so I was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Josh Groban's daring awakening to new rhythms.......2007-04-12

I bought this cd with accompanying dvd (the making of Awake) for my 8yr and 5yr old daughters who have started a collection of Josh Groban cds and dvds. They really enjoy classical and opera, and have locked on to his music. My husband and I have grown to like Josh's music through our daughters. Although we had already bought the cd, we decided to buy this product with the accompanying dvd on the making of the album. It was well worthwhile. The folder contains the cd, song booklet, and dvd which is very enlightening and allowed us to see a side of Josh Groban that we have not yet seen before. One of the things I find disappointing in all the cds we have bought so far is that there are no accompanying english translations in the song booklets - this one does not have it either. While we have learnt a lot of Italian, Spanish and French songs from Josh's cds, it would be nice to know what we are singing - so if an english translation were side by side with the foreign one, it would be nice.
My daughters enjoyed seeing the backgroud story on the dvd and were quite touched to see him both working and playing - especially coloring with a little girl and his sense of humor. The main thing we like about it is that it is clean entertainment that our whole family can enjoy together. I was a little taken aback at one point to see that he uttered what seemed to be an expletive but it was "beeped" out, thankfully, and my daughters were none the wiser. I hope that he doesn't allow that to happen on any of his future projects. The songs are wonderful, his singing range really comes out on this album, and the variety of music is refreshing. A daring but successful dive into other rhythms - African. It is a nice addition to our collection!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2007-02-25

I wasnt sure if 'Awake' could possibly top 'Closer', but I was very wrong! 'Awake' is perhaps Josh's best album to date. 'Dont Give Up' is the stand out track. 'February Song' and 'When She Dances' are sure to be fan favorites. Dont hasitate and buy this CD!!!

For having waited 5 years for a CD to come out I think she did a good job, but nothing really blew my mind other than La Tortura, No, and Hips Don't Lie. I'm glad que yo espere antes de comprar los dos Cds individualmente because the deluxe edition comes with all the songs plus a bonus DVD with all the videos for the two albums except La Pared and Illegal.

5 out of 5 stars The best...EVER.......2007-03-27

5 out of 5 stars ORAL FIXATION 1&2.......2007-03-22

SHAKIRA IS GREAT. WE HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO HER AND ENJOYING HER SONGS SINCE SHE WAS 15. WE LIKE BOTH THE SPANISH AND ENGLISH CDs. AND IT WAS A GREAT PRICE. THE VIDEOS WERE A NICE BONUS.

5 out of 5 stars Shakira has become a master at her craft........2007-02-21

This beautiful lady has done it again. With her talent and her voice, she has my vote. With the exception of only two songs, I love every song she wrote, and this is unusual for me to like that many on two albums. Of course the DVD brings out her mastery in the art of the visual. To see her is to love her!

Rereleased two decades after the motion picture debuted, the soundtrack to the movie version of America's first "tribal love-rock musical," Hair, holds up amazingly well. Performances by Treat Williams ("I Got Life"), Beverly D'Angelo ("Good Morning Starshine"), and Nell Carter ("Abie Baby" and "White Boys") are as uproarious as ever, while Cheryl Barnes's "Easy to Be Hard" remains a paralyzing gospel number. The timing could not have been better, as many trends in late-'90s music retread the musical's funk bass and evangelical vocal arrangements. But beyond a lucky coincidence, the rerelease of the music comes at a time when the spoiled offspring of the original Woodstock generation returns to the farm rioting, destroying property, and filling arrest dockets with names. If nothing else, the CD is a glorious reminder of a time when social awareness, brotherly love, and mind expansion were mantras, not marketing rhetoric on the sides of soda bottles. --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars Hair: Original Soundtrack - The BEST Hair Recording EVER!.......2007-07-05

This is the original remastered soundtrack of Milos Forman's masterpiece. It is stunning, how underrated this movie is in North America. The vocal performances, musical arrangements are absolutely top notch, like it was recorded yesterday. You can hardly wait to see the movie after listening this phenomenal soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars a true blast from the past.......2007-03-15

My High School drama/musical club wanted this recording to study and for consideration for performance possibilities. Great music, some of the lyrics were heavy, but a very positive musical experience.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to it.......2007-02-23

I really like it. I like Aquarius and a whole bunch of others. There are songs on here I like better than the Original Broadway Cast Recording. Then there are some songs I like better from the OBC recording than this one. All in all I really like the CD. Some of my favs are Aquarius, I'm Black/Ain't Got no, My Conviction, Easy To Be hard (really like this version), Electric Blues, Black/White Boys, Abie Baby (I like what Nell Carter does to this song, it is different than the OBC), 3-5-0-0, What a Piece of Work is man, Good Morning Starshine, and Flesh Failures.

2 out of 5 stars Hair: Original soundtrack Recording - special anniversary Edition.......2007-01-10

The music quality was not very good. It sounded like it was recorded on the wrong speed, and the singers in a different octave . It doesn't compare with the original recording on LP.

5 out of 5 stars I have fallen in love with this musical...............2006-04-20

I think that this soundtack is wonderful and amazingly well made and well done. I've looked at other people's reviews, and a lot of people are saying that this soundtrack is not the one for them and are warning other people not to get it. I disagree and feel that the musical soundtrack is good too, but that this soundtrack is still as amazing and well preformed as ever. Mabye some of the artists could have put a little more energy into making this soundtrack, but that fact still would not prevent me from listening to this sountrack and still thinking it is truly amazing.......

Sandwiched amidst the remarkable string of renascent Disney animation successes that spanned The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, the studio's 1992 adaptation of the venerable Arabian tale won a pair of Oscars for Alan Menken's vibrant instrumental score and his memorable collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice, the infectious song "A Whole New World." This new edition does more than showcase those enduring musical charms, fleshing out the original 21 tracks of songs, underscore and antics of Robin Williams' manic genie with rare demo recordings of a pair of songs that were deleted from the film before its original theatrical release. The wistful yearning of "Proud of Your Boy" and the rambunctious "High Adventure" (both performed by Menken, the latter in a duet with lyricist Howard Ashman) also pay bittersweet homage to original project lyricist Ashman, Menken's Academy Award-winning partner on Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars something's missing ...........2007-05-08

in 1992, walt disney pictures continued their hold on the world of animated entertainment with aladdin. that year, aladdin snagged 217 million dollars and was the highest grossing film of the year; it also won two academy awards for best score and best original song. however, compared to other works by the same composer and lyricists?

First up is the academy award winning score by alan menken. the score shows brilliantly what menken's greatest strength is. he can incorperate elements of both the story and the setting to make a great score that fits perfectly in the film. his use of middle-eastern sounds, rhythms and instruments is great and brings an intensity that can only be provided by the setting. his score also shows his ability to stay fresh with each project and he rarely duplicates himself and his earlier works; that said, aladdin is the worst score for duplicating earlier themes, but its never enough of a problem to truely seem that flawed.

SCORE 5 out of 5

during this production, howard ashman (menken's lyricist for little shop of horrors, the little mermaid and beauty and the beast) died. several of his works remain but tim rice was brought on to finish the remaining songs. ashman was an amazing force in musical entertainment and his death was a true tragedy, but how does rice do filling in? the truth is not all that bad. the following is a breakdown of all the songs from the picture.

ARABIAN NIGHTS -(ashman) this is one of the strongest songs of the entire piece performed by bruce adler. the intensity of the vocals and use of local rhythms and sounds provides a great opening that clearly shows how "we're not in kansas anymore"
5 out of 5

ONE JUMP AHEAD -(rice) this is the real opening where we first meet aladdin (sung by brad kane) and the guards chasing him. this is a fun broadway-esque number but falls somewhat short of other disney openers, notably beauty and the beast. however this is definately another strong song from this great soundtrack
5 out of 5

ONE JUMP AHEAD (REPRISE) -(rice) this is a softer, slower reprise that is beautiful and touching. maybe a longer or similar version would've fleshed out the entire piece better and given more depth and emotion.
5 out of 5

FRIEND LIKE ME -(ashman) as strong as this song is, the only problem is that by here, the whole jazzy feel doesnt quite work as well. this is a strong song (it is the second academy award nominated song) but by here, the whole over-the-top and larger-than-life feel is getting a little old.
4 out of 5

PRINCE ALI -(ashman) another strong song that works mildly better than the above due to the fullness of the orchestrations, but again is feeling a little bit too large but still fun and again broadway-esque
4 out of 5

A WHOLE NEW WORLD -(rice) here it is, 1992's winner for best original song and well deserving too. finally we find a song that is moving and emotional. this is the strongest song out out of the film easily; it is powerful and establishes aladdin and jasmine's love for one another. brad kane and lea solanga's vocals are both truly beautiful and moving as well
5 out of 5

PRINCE ALI (REPRISE) -(rice) this is a deveously fun little track sung by jafar that definately could've been a little bit more fun if it was a little longer, but still fun in a darker way.
4 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL 4 out of 5

the biggest problem overall is probably in the material. it didn't offer any real moments for a soft moving ballad (a whole new world aside). ashman's death definately weighs heavily on this album since one sits and wonders what he could have done, but really even his contributions show just how fun a piece this is intended to be, it's not supposed to be as powerful as other disney works. aladdin definately succeeds here, but in the grander scale of things, this is disney's weakest contribution to the disney rennisaince.

4 out of 5 stars It has oomph..........2006-12-05

It's surprising, very suprising. The score is excellent, it's suprisingly strong for this genre. The songs, although not brilliant in composition, at least have catchy lyrics and an infectious melody. Alan Menken is a Disney guy, and you'll hear reminices of 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Little Mermaid' throughout the CD. I haven't actually listened to the 'Special Edition' of the Aladdin soundtrack, so I can't rate the extra songs and features, but I trust the original score and songs have remained unchanged. In closing--don't judge a CD by its cover. Come to think of it, don't judge this movie by its cover. If you actually take the time to stop and look past the goofy stuff 'Aladdin' is a beautiful--and entertaining--movie. If this movie wasn't animated (marvellously animated, I might add) this score would probably be considered the ultimate paragon of 'Arabian Nights.'

5 out of 5 stars Aladdin Soundtrack- Really DOES take you to a whole new world!.......2006-09-03

ONE OF THE BEST CDs, BY FAR! I've been buying many of the major disney soundtracks, -the Lion King, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast- and then I came across Aladdin. This is definantly one the top with them all! I never get tired of this soundtrack. Some very amusing dialogue and songs, Robbie Williams does a great job, especially in soundtrack 8, Prince Ali! You'll be singing it all day.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful soundtrack!.......2006-07-27

This soundtrack, a joy to the ear when watching the movie, is just as wonderful to hear on cd. It's fun revisit favorite songs from the film like "Prince Ali," "a Friend Like Me," or "A Whole New World." Then too it's grand to hear the instrumental score to the film on disc. My daughter and I play the cd in the car and it makes our drives so dramatic! I like that she enjoys the more classical music at age 3 in addition to the vocal/character parts she recognizes from the movie. For me as a parent, it's delightful that some of the Disney films like Aladdin have music and characters adults can truly enjoy. A gem - clevel lyrics, beautiful music, fun to listen to and sing along to!

The soundtrack to the Jonathan Demme documentary, Stop Making Sense captures the Talking Heads live in 1984 on what would turn out to be their last major tour. This collection, and the film, is a true gift to the band's fans, a testament to the Heads' extraordinary talent, both in the studio and especially onstage. Frontman David Byrne infuses each song with a jolt of energy and drama that could only have come from a late-'70s art-school student. Now-classic tracks such as "Psycho Killer," "Girlfriend is Better," "Once in a Lifetime," "Take Me to the River," and "Burning Down the House" have never sounded better. This expanded 1999 reissue includes all nine of the original tracks, plus seven previously unheard cuts, including "Heaven," "Found a Job," and "Crosseyed and Painless." --Lorry Fleming

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best concert ever preserved.......2007-02-19

Simply the single best set by any band in the history of rock and roll. I know there will be people out there who will point to some Dead concert that's only available on a third generation cassette, but this set is as hot as the Heads ever were. The expanded edition is a great gift to the world.

3 out of 5 stars good Talking Heads record.......2006-02-20

i own this on vinyl and it's just good talking head songs live, although i have to say the original version of some songs are better but if you have the money i guess go for it but i recommend buying non live recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Bigger is not always better.......2004-10-26

The original LP version of this was a mere 9 songs, and was absolutely brilliant. I remember playing it constantly, wearing it out much like my two album "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads" double live album. I also got to see the concert film at some midnight show and was enthralled...a concert movie for people who liked music! I loved it so much that I eventually got David Byrne to sign the book that came with the album.

So I was really hyped to hear that the entire concert soundtrack was about to be reissued on CD. Seven extra songs! Warm with nostalgia, I finally bought the disc. Boy, was I let down. First, it isn't the whole concert. "I Zimbra" is particularly missed. Then, of all the crappy songs to include over that one, we have the Tom Tom Club and their SERIOUSLY dated "Genius Of Love."

One of the brilliant things about Talking Heads is that they may have been trend setters, but they were never trend mongers. The music sounds just as fresh today as it did when I slit the shrink wrap on the 1984 Album. But the Tom Tom Club was a lightweight side project that scored one novelty hit, and it sticks out like crayon smears on a DaVinci. I reach for the skip button just about everytime its lame, cliched, and oh so 80's stage patter starts to invade what used to be a flawless CD.

It takes what used to be a 5 star CD and knocks it down by one. It also provides continual proof that that not all unreleased tracks are really a "bonus." Since it has finally come out on a double disc, I strongly recommend the remastered and reissued "The Name Of This Band is Talking Heads" over this. At least the expanded tracks aren't an emarrassment.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live albums ever........2004-10-23

Jonathon Demme's 1984 concert film of the Talking Heads was an incredible experience. Sadly, when the original soundtrack was released, it contained only nine of the songs performed. Not only that, but they were entirely out of sequence, completely destroying the original purpose behind David Byrne's conception of the concert. Thank God they released this anniversary edition of the soundtrack, as this really does the film justice. Every song is here, and in its proper place, the way it was meant to be heard.

So, what is the big deal, you ask? Well, picture this. The soundtrack begins with "Psycho Killer," one of the first really big hits for the group. Instead of the entire band being onstage, David Byrne walks out with an acoustic guitar and a boom box. He presses PLAY on the box, which cues a drum program to begin playing. So the first song is just David Byrne singing and strumming his guitar, accompanied by pre-recorded percussion. For the next song, "Heaven," Byrne is joined onstage by bassist Tina Weymouth. Then Chris Frantz's drumset is wheeled out, and the three of them go into "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel." We finally hear some real drumming, not the predictable, computerized beats in "Psycho Killer." The album really begins to come alive. Then they go into "Found a Job," and things get more interesting. Byrne swaps his acoustic guitar for an electric, and lead guitarist Jerry Harrison comes out, meaning we now have two guitars. By the time the fifth track, "Slippery People," is underway, the entire band (including the extra musicians and backup singers) are on the stage, and now things are cooking. What happens over the remaining twelve tracks can only be described as an overload of the senses.

The purpose behind the concert was to provide a unique experience for the concert-goer, to create visual as well as aural art. Some of that sense is lost on the CD listener, but some of it remains. The songs were translated to disk beautifully, so that they still retain just about everything that made them a pleasure to listen to while watching the film. One can almost picture David Byrne running laps around the stage, dancing with the lamp, or wearing the big suit.

The concert resulting in the film and this album was performed shortly after the band released their 1983 album "Speaking in Tongues." So, needless to say, many of the songs you will hear are from that album. And I have to say that for each of them, I prefer the live version to the studio version. Each one of them sounds more vibrant, more full of life when performed on the stage. The improvisation on "Burning Down the House" is as good as it gets. Ditto "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," which is one of the most beautiful things I've heard, and I don't even like love songs. The studio versions lack that extra energy. Their pulse is just too slow. This is never more true for "Life During Wartime," which is actually a song from 1979's "Fear of Music." But anyway, this song displays Byrne's tendency to perfectly mismatch music and lyrics. The pulsating beat of club rock flows beneath what I interpret to be a humourously disturbing tale of a country under martial law. The song should not work as well as it does, and yet somehow, they pull it off. Anyway, after hearing the live version of it, I can no longer listen to the studio version. Also noteworthy is the improvisation on "Crosseyed and Painless." The intro and the extended guitar solos are just the icing on the cake for that one!

If there is a bad song on this album, it would have to be the interlude by the Tom Tom Club (a solo project of Heads drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth). "Genius of Love" could have been a great song. The instrumentation is very good. Sadly, it's ruined by Frantz's raucous babbling. He's attempting to be random like David Byrne, but tragically, he's not good at it. Other than that, this album is solid gold. It demonstrates the full potential of live music, and sounds amazing while doing it. Whether you're a fan of the Talking Heads or not, this album belongs in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Improvement Over The Original Version.......2004-10-17

It's true, to really appreciate this album, you have to see the film. And that's no chore. Stop Making Sense is probably the best concert film ever made. It's hard to imagine just listening to the album without thinking of Byrne's amazing stage presence (in or out of the big suit).

The Special Edition is the entire film soundtrack (minus some stage banter and the cut performances of "Cities" and "I Zimbra"). Their imagination made Talking Heads one of the greatest live bands of all time. The songs are mostly from SPEAKING IN TONGUES, but they also include interesting and in some cases superior versions of songs from all of their albums prior to 1983 with the help of the Tom Tom Club.

In addition to STOP MAKING SENSE, I recommend the newly released CD version of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. Listening to both would map eight years of live performances and barely short of 4 hours of live material.

Once again stonesour have come up with the goods mixing hard hitting metal with more melodic songs including a cover of wicked game, my favourite tracks are come what(ever)may and fruitcake both strong guitar rhythm based tracks well worth a listen all in all 18 yes! 18 tracks well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag..........2007-07-26

Come What(Ever) May was one of the strongest heavy metal/hard rock albums of last year and has rarely left my CD player since its release. I looked forward to this Special Edition release and wasn't disappointed...for the most part. The bonus tracks are left over from the Come(What)ever May recording sessions, with "left over" being the operative term. There's a reason these tracks weren't included on the disc originally; they aren't bad, but they aren't as strong as the rest of the tracks on the CD either. The exception is an amazing, acoustic cover of Chris Issak's "Wicked Game." Maybe it's because I've never been a fan of the orginal version, or maybe because it's the last thing you'd expect the likes of Corey Taylor & Co. to cover, but something about this track was so compelling that, driving home after purchasing the CD, I had to pull off the road and listen. Wow. The final track on the special edition CD is a spoken-word piece from Corey, an anti-Hollywood screed called "The Frozen." It's better than his poem at the end of Stone Sour's first CD, but Henry Rollins he isn't.

On the other hand, the DVD is a real treat. It includes all 4 of the videos from Come What(Ever) May, albeit censored for language. A 'hidden' video of working-in-the-studio footage, set to what sounds like an unmixed version of "Reborn"--could've left this one out fellas--preceeds a video of the band's live performance at the RAMP Awards in Moscow last October. It's a great, if all too brief, set that makes me want to be sure I catch Stone Sour next time they're on tour. With Slipknot reportedly headed back into the studio to record a new album next year, let's hope Corey and Jim don't make Stone Sour fans wait four more years for a new CD from their "other" band.

The lyrics are a typical whine whine whine that is enhanced by the singer acting like he has something beyond a superficial knowledge of the world. The result is a young person who watches blurbs of news clips and has listened to his crazy aunt about how bad and terrible America is. Don't profess to know about war unless you have served, and the same goes with politics. The singer has done neither, now of course he has the freedom to express his opinion because he is free, yet when all he does is smack talk about how we are not free and the flag means nothing then it is rather hypocritical. Do you even know how young this country is young man? The rest of the world that you speak of that is in a shystorm was there long before this country was founded. If you hate this country so much, you can leave at any time. Feel solace knowing that, because people in other parts of the world like Africa or the Soviet Union, do not have it so easy and would give anything to have the freedoms you have...the freedoms you so obviously misunderstand as you stoop over the zombies on your little soapbox. Musically this band is very, very good and I can take a couple of tripe songs, but when the entire album seems to be this singer jumping on the pain train to moan and wail a hyperbole of emotional nonsense, it gets old. I am throwing my copy in the garbage.

When you write a song, write about something you know because when you don't, you come off as nothing more than a cartoon of smokey wisps and buzzing sounds.

5 out of 5 stars New edition to a great follow up album.......2007-07-03

Again, the stone sour crew has again put together another collection of songs that will get fists pumping and people chanting. This album is at least as good as the first. There is no doubt of the slipknotish influence underneath, but the as it is unravelled and twisted back together throughout this album is far from what slipknot is. That is why corey taylor and his bandmates have this project, so they can explore other avenues of metal. Buy this version of the album folks. This is a special edition with 8 live tracks on DVD, along with 3 videos, and then 6 bonus tracks not included on the original album on the CD. Definate great value, and nice bonus to add to a collectors set. For first time buyers, get this version, second time buyers like me, well worth it.

Highlights-Your God, Made of Scars, Hell & Consequences, Through Glass.

Low's: None at this time.

Again, very strong sophmore effort from this Iowa based band.

4 out of 5 stars Revitalizing the Best Rock Release of 2006.......2007-06-29

Originally released last August, Corey Taylor (Slipknot) leads Stone Sour with the best Hard Rock release of 2006 called Come What(ever) May. In June 2007 they re-release the disk with 6 bonus tracks and a DVD. So let's break it down by original disk, bonus tracks and DVD....

The Original Disk From 2006:

There's no mistaking Corey Taylor's signature Slipknot screaming on Track 6 (Reborn), but Stone Sour mostly moves far away from Slipknot's complicated, chaotic arrangements to a more clearly sung, melodic rock sound. Make no mistake...Come What(ever) May is full of pounding Heavy Metal arrangements, but the vocals never stray into the hardcore Lamb of God I'm-the-Devil-and-I'm-pissed department. Instead you get driving music with quality singing.

And don't expect Nu Metal with Stone Sour...expect Hard Rock...period. I wouldn't classify Stone Sour as "old school" Metal either (you know, like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden). I would call these guys Modern Metal. Unlike the infestation of Nu Metal bands today, the guitars are set free in Stone Sour. James Root (also from Slipknot) and Josh Rand share the 6-string duties and blister their way through the disk. Ex-Soulfly drummer Ray Mayorga impresses on the skins (Godsmack's Shannon Larkin takes the sticks for Track 1). And Slipknot's stage manager Shawn Economaki rocks the bass.

There are standout tracks aplenty. Made of Scars (Track 5) is one of the best Hard Rock songs that I've heard in years. Track 3 (Hell & Consequences) is a close runner up. Track 9 (Socio) continues the melodic rock pattern, and Track 7 (Your God) had me singing along with its memorable "what am I supposed to do now" chorus after the first listen. Track 8 is the mainstream radio played hit Through Glass, and as I predicted in 2006, Track 4 (Sillyworld) has gotten its share of radio play in 2007 as well.

Often times head-banging, often times straight melodic rock. Either way, Corey Taylor's vocals are always understandable.

The Bonus Tracks:

Well...you know what they say about bonus tracks...if the songs weren't included on the original release it's because (fill in the blank). Most of the bonuses were taken from the Come What(ever) May recording sessions. The first bonus track called Suffer will greatly please Slipknot fans. The next three are fair with The Day I Let Go a bit darker than your typical Stone Sour. The last called The Frozen is a spoken word message. The surprise is a cover of Chris Isaak's Best Of Chris Isaak Wicked Game that's good enough for, and should get, radio-play.

The DVD:

The DVD is Stone Sour's real gift to fans with this re-release. I'm actually surprised that the package wasn't marketed as a performance DVD that includes the CD with bonus tracks (as opposed CD re-release with DVD and bonus tracks); I suspect that sales will not be as good because of this, especially among those that already own the CD.

First the DVD gives you the (censored) promo videos for 30/30-150, Through Glass, Sillyworld and Made of Scars. Then you get treated to a live performance (uncensored) from Moscow in October 2006 that includes:

1. 30/30-150
2. Orchids
3. Take a Number
4. Reborn
5. Your God
6. Inhale
7. Come What(ever) May
8. Bother
9. Through Glass
10. Blotter
11. Hell & Consequences
12. Get Inside

It's an excellent show where the boys must have huddled prior to going on and agreed to try to be as true to the studio versions as possible, because the songs sound great. The negatives to the DVD are that the picture is full screen and not up to today's widescreen, HD standards, and the only audio option is stereo...no Dolby 5.1 or DTS.

So the re-release of Come What(ever) May should certainly now be the first choice over the original release Come What(ever) May for Hard Rock fans that didn't buy in last year. If you already own the original CD, the price of the re-release is a lot less than a concert ticket and you get a full live performance on the DVD (without the danger from the mosh pit!!!)

I highly recommend the Come What(ever) May re-release to all Hard Rockers.
