Split Personality [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Mix-tape battlecat Cassidy's first full-length album (the inaugural release on producer Swizz Beatz's Full Surface imprint) is a solid effort from a young Philly kid who built his rep on freestyle fanaticism, putting to rest doubts of his ability to cut it as a studio MC. Although it does come off as a singles-oriented album, most everything found on Split Personality is worth a listen or two. The fact that Swizz Beats handles the bulk of production duties may initially scare away some potential buyers, but his played out "bells and whistles" sound has been successfully revamped with heavier bottom-bass and some nice vintage samples. And Cassidy responds well to the sonic landscape he's been provided with, skillfully expounding upon a surprisingly diverse range of topics. Even the inevitable fumbles have their charm; Cassidy's aggressive flow and tart interpretation of threadbare subject matter rescue weak tracks like the Nelly-esque "I'm Hungry" from instant "fast forward" status. --Rebecca Levine

Cassidy - Split Personality.......2006-10-16
After creating a pretty decent buzz on the mixtape circuit, Cassidy finally released his debut solo album, "Split Personality" in early 2004. His first single, the R. Kelly featured "Hotel" got mad radio spins and got lots of people checking for him, but can Cass stay true to his roots and be street or sell out and become another bubble gum rapper?

Wow this album is almost completely wack. There's wayyy too many radio friendly tracks, especially for the ladies. Cassidy definitely came into the game on the wrong note with this album. If you like bubble gum rap or just like what's playing on the radio, then this albums for you. If not just stay away.
Cassidy ----- Split Personality.......2006-01-13
Cassidy earned his way into the spotlight the old fashioned way, battling. When Cassidy stepped to Freeway, nobody in the City of Brotherly Love expected to see the challenger last a minute in the ring with the hometown and Roc-a-Fella Records endorsed favorite. But somehow, someway, Cassidy knocked out Free with enough gusto to not only stay around, but to land a deal with Clive Davis' J Records. But for the grimey battle rapper that AllHipHop followed so closely in his mixtape episodes, Cassidy was introduced to the rest of the nation with "Hotel" featuring R. Kelly, a club track so candy sweet that it leaves cavities. Is this the full story, or is the rest of Cassidy's debut, Split Personality worthy of that initial buzz?
The answer doesn't jump off of the album. But after all, LL Cool J isn't typically the same LL that went after Moe Dee, Ice-T, and Canibus. Maybe Cassidy is much the same. "Tha Problem" is the first time Cassidy steps with a harder stance and he doesn't really hold up. The track uses an obnoxious Public Enemy loop that builds energy but leaves the listener with blue balls thanks to Cassidy failing to deliver the heat. That heat remains on hold until Cassidy and Jadakiss team up for "Can I Talk to You." This track's brass bassline and 70's Cop Drama feel stands out on the album. Here, Cassidy gives us the delivery that he used to get signed. But for the most part, this album's lyrical content is tragic. Cassidy goes from a track about how he's "Hungry", to sixteen other tracks bragging about how he upped his status courtesy of the label. The punchlines are sub-par and the hooks are outdated reminders of early Ruff Ryder compilations. When Noreaga was hounded for rhyming the same words together, he had a reputation to uphold. Cassidy is doing it on his debut, and that's a dangerously lazy approach to rapping.
The album's production is authentic. Cassidy didn't try too hard to copy what he has done. Instead, he wanted to make a Rap/R&B album, and succeeded. The actual music throughout this project is very danceable. "Around the World" is a track that would make an excellent single. It's radio-worthy, and has a great Pop beat; a club record in full. The melodies depend on overexposure in the radio and video markets to succeed. Had it not been a single, "Hotel" doesn't jump off the album. That leads one to believe that this album does have the potential to still be highly successful.
In terms of art, and its homage to Hip-Hop, Cassidy fails. His mixtape drops last year were buzz-worthy. However, Cassidy admits in a verse that this album was made in less than two months. It doesn't sound like a rushed album. But even with The Lox and Snoop, and others getting involved, this album is not for the streets, but the clubs.
2.5 stars.

The East/West Connection From Oakland, Cali.......2006-09-21
D-Loc's "Split Personality" is a well rounded balance of West Coast house party music and 80's New York style Hip-Hop. This album was an independent Bay Area release in early 1990 but the songs were recorded in 89'. This was before the Northern California rap scene found it's own style and sound through hardcore music. There is no cursing with the exception of Bit** being said once on "Ace In The Hole". Songs like "Be A Friend To The End" and the last track "We Can Do This" contain positive social commentary over backpack rap beats that would make Mos Def and Talib Kweli smile. The only problem is that the liner notes credit D-Loc's partner in rhyme Richie Rich for writing all of his lyrics, a Hip-Hop no-no in any generation. That destroys D-Loc's credibility on track 6 "WorldWide MC" but he still has the voice and charisma to carry the whole album. Other than that, this is excellent music for its' time. The production sounds like something that was released on a major label in the 80's. I could imagine this record being important back in the day when the Bay Area ghettos needed their own Hip-Hop voice.

DEFINITELY BUY THIS CD!!!.......2004-04-22
I love this cd. I bought it only for the song, "Hotel" and was surprised by how many of the songs I liked after hearing them for the 1st time. I don't like the interludes on this cd, but other than that it is great.
My favorites:
"Hotel" - The reason I bought this cd
"Lipstick"
"Get No Better"
"Make U Scream" - Great beat/ another great song
"Blood Pressure"
"I'm Hungry"
"Hotel (vacation remix)"
Also, I usually never like remixes of songs that I already liked, but I like the "Hotel" remix as much if not more than the original song. I had never heard about Cassidy until "Hotel" but he is definitely a talented music artist.

The future of rock...........2002-03-14
I've been seeing Meghan play live in the Boston area for a couple years now and though this studio album doesn't catch her stella live performances, her talent sure shows thru in a big way! In reading the liner notes, you'll see that she plays almost every instrument on the album. She got some serious songwriting skills and a voice that can hit the low notes as well as the high. I can't figure out why "Another Sleepless Night" or "Locket" hasn't made it on commercial radio yet....It's better than most of the same sounding stuff we are innundated with day after day. Invest in this album (or "Eight So Low), check out her website and if you ever have the chance to see her live, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket....

Great All Around Album!!!.......2006-03-14
Picking up this album you're in for a treat. "Hi-gate" is banger Judge Jules teamed with Paul Masterson AKA "Yomanda". Putting those 2 together you get some bangin' tracks. You get 3 discs here and just disc 2 alone is worth the import price. Disc 1(Day) is a chill out disc, which works as more of a warm up I suppose. It's actually really good and considering I don't usually get into "chill" that's saying alot. Disc 2(Night) is the disc you buy the album for(Come on, who buys a CD by Jules & Masterson to chill too anyway?)with the inclusion of such favorites as "Pitchin'" & "Canned & Unable" every track is a banger. To round it all off you get a bonus pre-mix CD. Like I said you buy the album for disc 2 which on it's own is worth the price of the album alone. If you've ever heard a Hi-Gate track, you'll know what to expect. Don't hesitate, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
Mind Blowing.......2003-09-08
With out a doubt HI-GATE at there best, a nice blend of dance music wit a twist of smooth calm vocal by the lovely Gina and the master of dance Mr Judge Jules and Mr Paul Masterson A really good cd to get you in the mood for the weekend.Check out the Boy George track a classic tune.
Go listen!!!!!!!!!!

I was really moved by the other review...really moved. Lucky are the people who discover musicians as brilliant as Mark Whitecage. He's been around for some time and recorded great stuff along the way...which is why I occasionally check his name at amazon. I'm sure that this is a wonderful disc-even though I haven't heard it. I've heard him, over the years, play in a variety of contexts-from the Birth lp's to the chiarascuro...but I'm still waiting for Cadence to release U.F.O. onto cd. It's under bass player Saheb Sarbib's name...a pianoless quartet with two altos-Mark Whitecage and Daunik Lazro....and how those guys can play...I believe the drummer was Martin Bues...the rhythm section cooked and propelled the two altos to unbelieveable scorching solos...it's still burned into my memory from the 80's
way better than any hard bop of the time...too much melody for the avant guard....somebody should pair Mr. Whitecage with another alto player-maybe Rob Brown-and add Duval & Rosen or even William Parker & Hamid Drake....Well, I'll go on waiting and I'll go on dreaming....peace
Mea culpa, mea culpa........2004-12-31
One of my many failings as a human being has to do with my inadequacies as an advocate for the music I love more than any other: free jazz. This is especially galling an inadequacy when I see that no one else has reviewed anything by Mark Whitecage.
Let me start out by stating my thesis: Mr. Whitecage is one of the most original and intelligent reed players in the genre. If you want to get some idea of how respected he is by his peers, go to his web site and check out his discography as a sideman or co-leader. He has recorded with Gunter Hampel, Sahib Sarbib, Perry Robinson, Michael Jefry Stevens, Joe Fonda, Dominic Duval, Marshall Allen, Roy Campbell, Joe McPhee and Anthony Braxton among others.
This is a man in his late sixties who has been playing since he was six and who has played everything from Dixieland to his latest experiments with his "virtual combo" (electronic augmentation of his playing to the extent that he sounds like a full ensemble).
On Split Personality, all of Mr. Whitecage's gifts are displayed at full strength. He is playing alto sax, soprano sax, clarinet and alto clarinet in the company of Dominic Duval (bass) and Jay Rosen (drums). This is a democratic trio where any of the three is likely to be the lead voice and all three are deep listeners as well as powerful improvisers.
Mr. Whitecage has provided his bandmates with simple but definitive structures. He does not believe in chord progression as he does not want to be tied to that anything that definite. But he does believe in stong if unusual melodies. He is a complete improvisor capable of playing practically any way on his horn. His extended techniques get a work out on Slick Willie and High Tech #7, his "ballad" sensibilities get a work out on tunes like Something About J.C. and his freebop skills shine on tunes like Katherine's Song. Most of what impresses me is the sense I get from listening to him of how focused he is. Mr. Whitecage strikes me as someone who is completely present when he plays. The result with someone like that is that the possibilities are wide open. Mr. Whitecage simply eschews cliches.
As for Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen they comprise one of the greatest rhythm sections of the day. They are powerful, sensitive
and also deep in the moment. Try this experiment. Purchase this CD of Mark Whitecage's and then purchase another called Journey by Trio X which is Joe McPhee alongside Duval and Rosen. Play them both on the spiral function on your CD player and listen to how differently Rosen and Duval play when in the company of each of these two great saxophonists. And then write me and tell me what a great guy I am for turning you on to two such fine CDs.
And maybe, just maybe I will feel a little bit better about myself as an advocate for free jazz.
