Slam: The Soundtrack [Explicit Lyrics] [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's nice to see that a film that places so much value in the spoken word went out of its way to fill up the soundtrack with accomplished rappers: most everyone here has demonstrated on more than one occasion that he has something to say (while the few that don't have much to say at least have a nice flow). Representing the old school, there's Q-Tip, a newly resurgent and provocative Brand Nubian, and KRS-One, who teams up with Saul Williams, a noted spoken-word artist and the film's star, who has appeared on both the Lyricist Lounge, Volume One and Black Whole Styles compilations. Then there's the new kids, most of whom have been around the block a half dozen times: Big Punisher, Goodie Mob, Black Rob, Mobb Deep, and a surprisingly catchy Flipmode Squad. Still, the spoken-word interludes, taken from the film and performed by Williams, Sonja Sohn, Jerome Goldman, and Bonz Malone, put most all of the MCs to shame with their intensity and eloquence. --Randy Silver
Vibe
With a cast as diverse as its accompanying film, the Slam soundtrack seems to possess all the ingredients for a stellar compilation. However, while the collection may look appealing--featuring a lineup of new music from Noreaga, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and KRS-One--looks ca be deceiving. A thorough listen through reveals more frowns than pounds.

eh..........2003-10-05
I got the soundtrack because I really liked the movie and am a huge Saul Williams fan, yet there is very little Saul on the album.
I am a bigger fan of what many people concider "concious" hip-hop, and there isn't too much of that on here.
Stand-out tracks are 10 and 17, but you can't really go wrong with KRS One or Dead Prez.
The only tracks that are actually from scenes performed in the movie are 7, 11, 15, 19.
I was dissapointed that saul's spoken word from the jail basketball court didn't make it onto the album.
In short, the album is good for tracks 7, 10, 11, 15, 17, and 19, and I could really care less for the rest.
great soundtrack.......2003-07-24
bigpun, goodie mob, dead prez, coolio and odb, brand nubian have best songs. great soundtrack for the 98
If You Enjoyed The Movie, You'll Love The Soundtrack!.......2003-07-24
The soundtrack has most if not all of the memorable verses read including the music which really set the tone of the movie. There's Saul's last poem on this cd which is reason enough to buy this soundtrack!
Good Movie, Good Message, Good Hip-Hop.......2002-04-29
Man, I have to take issue with the review by Vibe (a publication that for the most part takes commercialism much too seriously). Strangely I listened to the soundtrack before I saw the movie. At the time I thought it was ok, but not exceptional.
When a friend of mine and I watched this movie, I thought the movie was thought-provoking and uniquely directed.
After watching the movie I returned to the soundtrack and found it to be much much better. The slam tracks were much better in context.
Also how can you argue with Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Dead Prez, and KRS-One all on one album.
it `s worth buying.......1999-03-31
it is really good but there is not one track great.i think the one of black rob is best. this cd is no sensation but it is worth buying.

Intriguing.......2007-02-15
This is a very commanding and intriguing score. Composer Adolph Deutsch did a tremendous job scoring this one. Conductor William T. Stromberg and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra once again come through with an excellent recording intrinsically representing Adolph Deutsch's perspective.
A Tribute to Adolph Deutsch..........2005-04-02
In the shadow of the big film score trio of the 1930s and 40s, Steiner, Korngold, and Waxman; there were other distinguished film composers such as Adolph Deutsch. Thanks to this now budget priced reissue on Naxos, we are given a varied program example of his film score output from 1941-44. John Morgan again as in most of these projects has reconstructed and quilted together suites to preserve talent that would go down in obscurity. Deutsch was a contract composer at Warner a good part of his career, where the five selections on this disc are drawn. Oddly Deusch had a popular music background, but was not given any musical assignments. He was however thrown a comedy or two, one which was the Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan farce "George
Washington Slept Here". Through whimsical dressed up folk themes, we see the mishaps of a couple struggling to get a supposed historical farmhouse up to par. Nice to have a comedy score for a change! We get two Bogart scores, ofcourse "Maltese
Falcon" and "High Sierra". In Maltese the music is subtle and mysterious using economy of instruments; yes, because the studio was on a budget. "High Sierra" also was budget restricted, but Deutsch still managed a melody Steinerish score depicting the great natural locations of California's Sierra Mountains. In the "Mask of Dimitrios" we get a tension filled mood score as Peter Lorre pursues a deadman walking. "Norhtern Pursuit" a WWII
espionage thriller gets a big orchestra illustrating icy Canada and patriotic themes as well as Nazi darkness. The bars of V victory from Beethoven's fifth end the film abruptly. Mosfilm Studios does another good job with the recording, full and spacious.
