They set out to nail down a defining moment in their career, the MercyMe golden spike if you will. The goal for Coming Up to Breathe was a genre groundbreaking release such as Amy Grant's Lead Me On or U2's The Joshua Tree. While it's hard to go that far, it's safe to say that MercyMe's artistic integrity has met commercial appeal somewhere in the middle with Coming Up to Breathe. The one-time worship band certainly know how to write a hit and they bring us more of the same with radio-ready tracks like "So Long Self," "Last One Standing," and "Safe and Sound." But lead man Bart Millard digs a little deeper on the self-revealing "No More No Less" and "One Trick Pony." Lyrically both tracks reveal a band unapologetic about their faith and creative destiny. "Pony" is a pleasant divergence with its slide guitar and Mississippi mud atmosphere, conjuring up images of the band sitting at a crossroads somewhere in the Southland. MercyMe has never been afraid to show their musical influences on their sleeve. That's why you shouldn't be surprised by the Edge-like guitars on "Something About You" or even the pounding rhythm chords of "Hold Fast," which evoke Coldplay comparisons. So it's that struggle between creating something new and holding true to your principles that the band spells out for us. Perhaps Millard sums this up best on "3:42 AM (Writer's Block)" when he sings of a man out of words but not out of passion to allow God to speak through him. That's always been the aim of MercyMe and in this case, their hammer has driven this spike solidly into the ground. --Michael Lyttle

Album Description

Certain albums are obvious landmarks in the history of Christian music. These are the times when vision meets talent in a divine appointment that produces a collection of songs that help define an artist's career: WhiteHeart's 'Freedom', Amy Grant's 'Lead Me On', dcTalk's 'Jesus Freak', and Michael W. Smith's 'Eye 2 Eye', among others. MercyMe's new release, 'Coming Up to Breathe', is one of those albums. Singer Bart Millard is pleased with the success of MercyMe's previous albums, but admits there's a special satisfaction in this one. "We've always joked about wanting to make our 'Freedom' or 'Lead Me On', and time will tell if that is ever the case," Millard says, "but we just gave it everything we had. There was no holding back on this record. Regardless of what you are going through in life, regardless of what you are consumed with, regardless of what fills up your everyday life, there are times you have to stop and surface and take a deep breath and remember what's important. That's what this album is for us. It's addressing everything we've gone through and realizing the one common denominator in all this is Jesus. That's what is worth taking a breath for."

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2007-04-23

This is the first MercyMe album I've owned, so I can't give a thorough comparison to thier other cd's. I have listened to samples on Amazon, but I wasn't a big fan of what little I did hear, to be honest. The past albums sounded a bit too "pop/boy band-ish" for my taste. This album has a wonderful, positive message but with an organic, rockin sound that uplifts! I'm a big fan of music in general, and I have to say that this album can definitely compete (and outdo in some cases) with the 'secular' bands of today. Fans of good Christian rock would definitely love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Another hit!.......2007-04-10

In the true form of MercyMe, Coming Up To Breathe is another example of their unique musical abilities.
This group is tops!

5 out of 5 stars Mercy Me Rocks - or not.......2007-02-22

I'm not a big fan of rock music, but the music on Mercy Me's "Coming Up to Breathe" album is an exception.
The music is catchy, and the lyrics are right on in expressing the human conditon, yet lift the mind and the heart in praise.
The harmony on "Let Me Introduce Myself" and "Bring the Rain" are stunning, with the richness of the basses mixing so well with the lighter voices of the sopranos.
I thought it was extremely clever to write a song about the frustration of writing a song in "3:41 a.m.".
I think that this album is a valuable addition to the Christian contemporary music genre, and I'm anxious for Mercy Me to give us more.

5 out of 5 stars All Thumbs Up!.......2007-02-08

I have owned this cd for a while and the more you listen to it, the richer you discover it is.

Worthy of note is that musically, they have ventured and matured beyond (even though they didnt stray so far away) from their signature sound.

It is a great listen. The arrangements are very good, some are outright innovative. There is also more chart-like pop than rock than in their previous albums, a tiny Southern influence but in my opinion but it still great.

Best of all about this cd, and being a Catholic reviewer, I must say their theology is still very sound and undiluted.

I dont prefer the radio singles over the others. They are all equally powerful tracks. Some are just so eerily personal to me

Summarily, I love 'Coming Up to Breathe'. Mercy Me has scored again and I'm glad they are who they are.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff for a first-time listener.......2007-01-20

I never heard MercyMe's stuff before this album, so I don't have anything to compare it to, which I think is nice; it's good to have a fresh ear. I never knew they did "I Can Only Imagine." (I wasn't a big fan of that song, so it's just as well.) I just happened upon this CD one day, and bought it just for kicks. I'm so glad I did. Turns out I really, really enjoy it, and have listened to it over and over without getting tired of it.

This CD is uplifting, but it's also full of excellent music that I can jam to. Those back-up vocalists are fantastic; they add a really rich dimension to the sound that you can't get from paper-thin, generic arrangements that abound out there these days. It's just different enough to set it apart from other artists, but not so different that it alienates its listeners.

I like the message. I like the sound. That's really everything I could ask for.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars quite amazing.......2004-06-08

ozomatli works with a variety of styles and sounds and talents and it creates...wow. live they have enough energy to pull in even someone who hates latin and or rap and hip hop. they draw the crowd in and preform to max. fully corordinated dance on stage well playing instuments is very impressive. often times when a band is great live you will buy their cd to find that it is not as great as you thought. not so with ozomatli, the cd is something i have listened to over and over again. they sing about actual issues, which you dont see so much in main stream music these days, and they are increadibly proficiant at their instruments. the sax/clarinet/obo player is increadible, to be able to go that high on a clarinet would have to take a life time of learning.

5 out of 5 stars A teaser for great things to come.......2004-02-06

Ozomatli is undoubtedly an incredible live act with enough energy onstage to light up a large city. Their blend of musical sounds (hip-hop, funk, rock, folklorico, norteno, etc. etc.) is really unique, and the passion they have in their singing is indisputable. So, with that, they released this brilliant 6-song EP as a follow up to their outstanding "Embrace the Chaos." The CD grabs your attention from the very beginning, with "Pensando En Mi Vida", which has a classic Ozo sound. "Let Me Dream" is somewhat of an anomaly, as its entirely sung in English, yet somehow it works (it takes some getting used if you're a longtime Ozo listener). It's got a smooth groove to it, and the vocals work, unlike many other Spanish-singing bands trying to break into the English-speaking market. "Esa Morena" is a great song to dance to with a beautiful girl at your side, and "Ya Viene El Sol" is bound to become a classic Ozo song. I saw the band perform this track live at a packed show at the Fillmore in Dec. '03 and it was incredible, and remarkably, the CD version doesn't lack any of that energy. This EP is by far the best buy for the price of most releases I've seen out today. Each and every song is a winner (another rarity). Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Band.......2004-01-02

I've seen Ozomatli in concert several times and they always put on an awesome show! If they're ever in your town, go see them! Great energy! Great tunes!

5 out of 5 stars Truly, Coming Up.......2003-12-30

I've had the pleasure of watching Ozomatli grow from gigs within LA. To have them create an awesome CD in 1998, then to go on and inflate their gift with a second album, and develop exposure in film and tours is wonderful. Their current CD, "Coming Up," has 6 songs - 5 new and 1 remixed has lifted their talent range to a new height. Many artists, talented or not, tend to lag or shift drastically when creating "new" albums and Ozomatli is just one of those groups that has it. The energy, the instrumental vibe, and intelligent lyrics, truly is genius. I recently saw their concert (again) they took my breath away. My advice, make a wise investment and purchase this CD and their past two CDs for yourself and someone you know.

5 out of 5 stars worth the wait.......2003-09-25

After a more than two-year lag since releasing Embrace the Chaos, Ozomatli does not disappoint with the release of their new EP Coming Up. Ya Viene El Sol is one of their strongest songs ever, and the eclectic union of sounds that is Ozo is exemplified in this song but omnipresent on the CD. Let Me Dream, their first non-rap song entirely in English, is a hooky pop-oriented song that was stuck in my head after the first listen. At first, it didn't seem quite right, but, after a couple of listens, I think it's just one more new direction for the Ozo sound. It's a great listen at a great price. Old fans will be thrilled to have some new music by one of their faves and new fans will wonder why they aren't old fans.

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. But no small part of the show's intensely propulsive drive -- and much of its dramatic tension and atmospheric textures -- are consistently delivered by the music of young composer Sean Callery, who's won three straight Emmy nominations (winning once) for his contributions to the series. The composer personally selected and annotated the tracks for this anthology of his best work from the show's first three seasons, anchored by a complete version of the show's usually truncated theme. Though it shares similarities with Michael Giacchino's work on Alias, Callery's work here is consistently darker, an electro-organic fusion that spans tense, brooding orchestral passages and thrashing dollops of metallic-edged techno. Yet the composer also delivers moments of melodic, almost mournful solitude, while the third season's story line inspires some evocative Latin influences as well. Callery's background in sound effects editing contributes much to the rich sonic textures here, yielding a pioneering approach that portends a bright future for the composer. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars 24 Soundtrack.......2007-06-02

For fans of Sean Callery's work on 24, this CD is a must have. This soundtrack is also very enjoyable on long drives, and it brings you right into the show.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE 24 MUSIC.......2007-02-11

It was wonderful. As alway Sean Callery's music is outstanding. When you listen to it you can remember the scenes from 24. I would highy recomend it.

3 out of 5 stars I wish..........2006-12-04

Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

5 out of 5 stars A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars A excellent score for a excellent TV drama!.......2006-11-12

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!

4 out of 5 stars A look at Aimee Mann's early years ..........2005-04-26

Yes, a good chunk of the material here is very '80s, but it's all excellent. Despite the somewhat dated recordings, the songs pulse with Mann's thoughtfulness, intrigue and a touch of seething anger. Two of 'til tuesday's three hits are on this CD, which is great, but I am scratching my head at why "Looking Over My Shoulder" was left out. What a GREAT song! And it was a hit! Its omission baffles me. With that song, this would have been a five-star CD, but it's still pretty darn fabulous. If you are an Aimee Mann fan, this CD is definitely up your alley, my friend.

5 out of 5 stars Aimee Mann at her best.......2004-05-02

Vaguely remembering a few songs from the band, I bought this as a curiousity, sort of liked it upon listening, and then it grew on me. This collection of songs from 'Til Tuesday's first 3 cd's is an excellent compilation of thoroughly listenable music, featuring Aimee Mann's beautiful voice and knowing lyrics in melodic compositions of synthesized musical sounds. There is something that just works about the flow of tracks in this compilation (which is a rare phenomenon of greatest hits records). Standouts are the resounding "No One Is Watching You Now", the upbeat syncopations of "On Sunday," and the sentimental favorite "Coming Up Close", though this entire cd has a wealth of original vintage 1980's pop sounds, that haven't lost their touch or appeal, suggesting a certain timelessness in the songwriting and production. It's good road trip music, or even for studying. Simply a great cd.

4 out of 5 stars Should have been five stars..........2003-08-29

Simply put...it is an awesome CD and a must for any Aimee Mann/Til Tuesday fan. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because the record company masterminds who put it together failed to include "Looking Over My Shoulder" (from the "Voices Carry" CD). I would love to know who decides what tracks to put on these "greatest hits" collections because they ALWAYS seem to forget an obvious choice or two!!!

4 out of 5 stars Close but not quite.......2003-07-02

Exactly who is it that decides what songs to put on this kind of complilation? I think that there is a deliberate effort made not to put all of the really good songs on any complilation. If they did then there would be no need to pick up the individual CD's.

I was aware that there were at least two songs I would have loved to have on this CD. There are a bunch of other songs that I've never heard of, some of which are okay and some of which are skippers. There is one song I could do without, "Love in a Vacumn" but since it is the first song it is easily skipped.

Bottom line is that if I had it to do over again I'd pick up the individual CD's and make my own best of CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pipes.......2003-06-27

Aimee Mann has great pipes and this album shows it. Crank it up and play the first three songs. The song "Voices Carry" really made the band famous, leading to much airplay on beaches. The last half of the album is not up to the same level (although I would have chosen other songs), which is to be expected for most greatest-hits albums. This does a nice job of portraying typical songs during the 80s-90s era.

    Product Description

Four years ago, the hard working band from Texas, MERCYME, was propelled into the spotlight with several hit songs. Millions of radio listeners who may not have ever considered themselves fans of Christian music suddenly found themselves singing along to songs like "I Can Only Imagine", "Here With Me", and "Homesick". After the success of their first hit, the group found themselves juggling 250 performances a year. MERCYME experienced success beyond their wildest dreams but were also faced with some of the greatest personal challenges of their lives. Although at times they were overwhelmed, they came up to breathe with their faith intact. When it came time to start recording this record, MERCYME locked themselves in a studio with award winning producer BROWN BANNISTER and poured out all that was on their hearts. Not concerned with the songs fitting a certain testimony to God's sustaining grace while continuing to explore musical landscapes. The result is the most upbeat and accessible record of their career with "Coming Up To Breathe".

HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

the tone for the shows music was created by wendy melvoin & lisa coleman...the theme they created is the best part of this cd. too bad more of the original music from the first season wasn't included in this compilation. also, just a correction to a previous post; the people who designed the main titles won the emmy, the jeff beal.

3 out of 5 stars Not such a great sampling...........2001-01-21

Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.

4 out of 5 stars nice but operatic.......2000-02-23

This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

    Amazon.com essential recording

This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David Hurwitz

    Amazon.com

Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Ladies & gentleman: The Lord'n Savior, God Almighty.......2007-06-13

Handel's Messiah is my favorite piece of classical music. Of the two versions that I had I only have left this one, and it is not the best (the other had been a cheap recording whose author's name I forgot too). This version seems to lack a little enthusiasm from the voices; too melancholic. Anyway, this is the first review of any music that I write, and probably will be the last too, so I just want to leave my impression of how I feel when I hear these solemn and heavenly sounds. One feels so raised to the heavenlies... I can almost sense the presence of the Lord Almighty up yonder among the clouds, and me being carried in solemnity to meet Him. Far away are the buzzing sounds of earthly chores. The air is fresh and clean as we are raised above the valleys, and we come to meet God's elected amid the singing, stronger and stronger. Jubilant, bathed in the glorious rays of the Savior's Light, we come together and sing: Glory to God, glory to God, praise and glory for He is coming...

2 out of 5 stars So Fashionable, and So Disappointing.......2007-02-01

This would be a great 21st Century Reader's Digest version of Messiah, if such a thing existed any more. Handel did as much as he could, but really, the performers still have to do something besides posture, which, by the way, seems to me to characterize many performances these days. Fashionable, but musically deficient.

Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?

Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??

Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.

The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.

Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."

Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.

4 out of 5 stars A nice combination of period nad tradiitonal.......2006-12-17

This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.

The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

... This Messiah has recently been re-released at a much cheaper price. Go back and look for the DG "The Originals" release, which is being sold new for under $12.

5 out of 5 stars La mas bella y fidedigna interpretacion que se pueda obtener.......2004-12-29

4 out of 5 stars One of the best hard/alterna-rock CD's I have ever owned..........2005-01-01

If you listen to mainstream radio today, you know that the number of modern and alternative rock bands out there seems to be growing exponentially. With such a large number of very similar artists, it's quite rare that we find that one sticks out above the rest. This is where Breaking Point comes in, and the sad thing is that you won't even get to hear them on those very radio stations. This also speaks volumes about the current state of radio-America, but that piece shall be saved for another day. This CD is not your derivative, soft verse/hard chorus music that circulates through the airwaves constantly; no, these guys cover all ends of the hard rock spectrum (although I don't believe I heard any solos, but I could be mistaken), from the epic title track, to the softer "Live For Today," all the way to the album's finale, the all out rocker "One of a Kind," which was actually just tacked onto this later pressing of the album (the band hadn't even recorded it at the time of the original of pressing of the album, but included it once it became the theme song for the WWF's Rob Van Dam. And yes, it was WWF, not WWE back in those days). Yes, many of the songs do tend to follow that softer verse/hard chorus formula we all know so well, but it is not driven into the ground and doesn't ever make the album seem stale. Even with this, the band makes the songs catch your attention, as each song has heaviness even when it goes through the softer moments. Let me put it frankly: you will not go from an acoustic, soft sung verse to a screamed hard chorus, the stereotypical routine for bands in the alternative rock genre. If I had to compare these guys to some more well known bands, I guess I would have to go with a more rocking, somewhat darker version of Nickelback, or maybe a less metal/more rock influenced Godsmack. Don't hold those comparisons against these guys though; I was really struggling to come up with something. The standout tracks on this CD would have to be "Coming of Age," with its extremely catchy and memorable chorus, "One of a Kind," because it is just a generally excellent rock song, and "Live For Today," with its acoustic beginning leading into the slightly distorted conclusion-makes for a very good build up. Other noteworthy cuts include "27," featured on "The Scorpion King" soundtrack, and "Brother," which actually features Josey Scott of Saliva. I would have given this CD 5 stars (and it actually should be 4.5 anyway), but the only thing that brought it down was the mere fact that it did have that cliched mainstream rock formula in it every now and then. Other than that, this is a beautifully crafted record, and a must have for anyone who wants (or needs) to see what real rock is all about, and yet can still remain accessible.

This is the kind of album I like to hear. Not because of it's own greatness, but after listening to this kind of album, you just know you've stumbled upon a band that will make great albums eventually. Want proof ? Just check out the last song on this album : One of a Kind. The original album didn't have that song. It ended at number 10, Under. One of a Kind was added later when they started playing it as Rob Van Dam's theme in the WWE. You can just hear the difference between that track and the others.

As for the rest of the tracks, they go from ok to pretty good. The main problem I see here is that Breaking Point seems to have a problem with the chorus part of the song. Coming of Age would have been excellent with a better chorus. Same goes with Live For Today. They aren't bad, it's just that they could have been better. There is one song I wouldn't change, and it is Brother. The lyrics are good and the part where Saliva's singer does his thing is just great.

Before my final thought, I'd just like to note that the cover art of the CD is really well done. So good job by the artists there. So, to sum it up, I actually don't recommand buying this album. I just know there's something much bigger just around the corner, waiting...

5 out of 5 stars Best bands in 2003.......2003-02-03

Listen to to breaking point brings a breath of fresh air to listening to music, with the recycled raido waves and every one trying to sound the same few bands broke away from the norm, and I belive Breaking point is one of them this band has the most potential I've seen in a long time. Falling down was one of the songs that cought me by suppise then it was one of a kind which was music to my ears. Over all one of the best CD's I've purchased in a long time
