Tim's Bio: Life From da Basement [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Timbaland was known as an innovative producer before deciding to make a name for himself; on his second album, he shows that he keeps his best tracks stockpiled for the home team. When he raps, "He said 'Timbaland can't rap' / But I don't care / Because I make dope tracks / I make you bounce and wiggle / And do this and that," it's no idle boast; it hasn't been this much fun to strap yourself into a pair of headphones in years. --Randy Silver

Though Timbaland's work might be characterized by its daring unpredictability in terms of rhythmic structure, it's his youthful sense of fun that proves most infectious. His ideas feed both the empirical and the creative mind alike. Tim's Bio is an elegant summation of the first chapter in the musical life of the producer who has revolutionized the sound and context of American R&B (and urban-based music as a whole) in as little as three years, with his smash albums for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, and Ginuwine, along with Tim's own partnership with rapper Magoo (who forms somewhat of a power core of Tim's mercurial crew, Da Bassment). Bassment regulars get the star treatment they have become accustomed to, while new talents--such as Kelly Price and wordsmith Twista--shine just as brightly. --Tamara Palmer

4 out of 5 stars Top Notch Production Is The Focus (4 Stars).......2004-10-07

When cats like Timbaland drop an album, you pretty much know already that the focus is on the beats instead of the rhymes. And I have to say that the beats on this album were some of the tightest out at the time. I want to say that Tim is the best producer to ever come out of Virginia, but The Neptunes are running neck and neck with Mr. Mosley (with Nottz holding down 3rd place). The guest appearances are even tight. There are a lot of no names on this album along with the usual suspects like Jay Z, Missy, Magoo, Nas, Aaliyah, Skillz (aka Mad Skillz)Ginuwine, and Ludacris (this was actually my first time ever hearing of Ludacris). Even Twista comes through and tears a Timbaland beat to shreds. There really aren't any negative things to be said about this album. Even the no name artists hold down their positions very well.

Basically, this album is a showcase for Tim's beats. We all know this. And the beats on this album don't disappoint. It's a great addition to your collection and still bumps even today. Tim has changed up his production schemes since this release, but this is still some of his best stuff. I'd suggest getting this album if you haven't heard it already.

Standout Tracks: Lobster & Scrimp feat. Jay Z, Fat Rabbit feat. Ludacris, Here We Come feat. Missy & Magoo, Who Am I feat. Twista (My Favorite), To My feat. Nas & Mad Skillz, and Bringin' It

5 out of 5 stars VA Baby, believe that.......2000-05-24

The only weakness on this CD is that Timbaland can't rap, which he rarly does does on this disc. It's more of a mix tape and an album combined. He uses some newer artists on here which is suprising, but NAS and Jay-Z do represent on here along with the usuals Missy and Maggo. Maybe he wanted his beats to be the focus of this album, as well they should be. Songs like Here we Go, Wathca Talkin' Bout, and Who Am I (with Twista goin' off) hook you in immediatly, while song like What You Know About this and To My reel you in slowly with thier cachy choruses and infectious beats. You won't be able to get these songs out of your head. The R&B part of the tape is not as strong (with Keep it Real starring) but is solid. A good buy for any music fan, and a must have collection from the best producer in hip-hop for any fan of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Tim comes hard with the beats on this one.......1999-12-18

Timbaland almost out did himself with this one. He gets tighter and tighter with every cd he produces. If anyone dosen't know who tim is let me fill u in. He is the producer responsible for making hit albums by : Ginuwine(both cds), Missy(both cds with missy's help), Aalyiah(second cd), Tim and magoo(welcome to our world), Are u that somebody(Aalyiah)-dr. doolittle sdtk, Nas(one track), Lil Kim(twice my age-track)...etc. This cd takes him to new hights by bringing in jigga(jay-z), missy and the rest of the crew along with some new voices. The best songs here are : 2,4, 6, 7, 15, and 16. Timbaland is best as a producer though and the only thing with this cd is that he dosen't do much rapping. His skills can pass since he produces he can get away with it. But don't listen expecting to hear him rap all through....because he dosen't. But expect to hear some hard, wall shaking, head-knocking beats as we always expect from Tim. The other half of the cd is R+B and 2 out of the 6 songs are good. His best beats I think are the ones he did for missy's new cd...Da real world. That is another one to check out if u don't have it.

Overall this cd is good for just the beats if nothing else. get if your looking for some new sounds to test your sound system or just if your a fan..or non-fan.
