The Main Ingredient
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Marley Marl disciple Pete Rock is rightly hailed as one of the greatest producers around. Jazzy and soulful, his productions are some of the smoothest, funkiest, most innovative, and listenable on record. Though he's produced a crate-full of hits, it's his work with front man C.L. Smooth that's most fondly remembered, and The Main Ingredient--the duo's second album, after Mecca and the Soul Brother--lives up to the hype. Smooth's proficiency on the mic doesn't match his partner's studio wizardry, but not many do, and Smooth's easygoing, free-flowing delivery complements the grooves to good effect (and more importantly, keeps Rock from taking on too many vocal duties). Great for parties or a lazy weekend afternoon, The Main Ingredient is fondly remembered for all the right reasons. --Randy Silver

All Time Fav.......2007-07-05
I wish they would come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pete's beats are hypnotic.
CL's flow is insane.
Before BIG, Jay Z
there was the immortal CL SMOOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most underrated duo ever.
Gotta give 'em props, they went out like Jordan in '93.
I guess I'll never hear their next classic album......

#1 SoulBrotha no question!.......2007-05-08
Classic Album, I used to play the sh@# out of this tape when going into the city in N.Y. Pete Rock & C.L together can tell a great story of innercity life! Beats are sweet and the lyrics are tight. Unquestionably a classic!
Criminally Slept On {5 Stars}.......2007-02-28
I'll go ahead and state the obvious: Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth never made a bad album. Period. They could probably come back from their 13 year hiatus and drop another classic as far as I'm concerned. The thing that makes this album great is 1) Pete Rock's immaculate production and 2) C.L.'s flow. You can't say that any of their albums sound like someone elses. CL has a unique format and interesting wordplay that commands attention. Pete Rock is easily one of the top 5 producers in hip hop history and his ear for jazz samples is unmatched to this day. They blend their talents on this album and the songs bleed into each other perfectly. Did I mention how P.R. drops snippets between tracks? Forget about it. He drops just enough to make you crave and come back for more. If you're not instantly feeling this album, your heart isn't beating.
Flaws? Forget about it. Moving on...
The Main Ingredient is the last release from the duo known as Pete Rock & CL Smooth. That should be reason enough for you to get this. If that's not enough, know that Pete Rock's production is on point and CL Smooth's unique flow and wordplay make for one of the smoothest/laid back rap albums you'll ever hear. This is one of those rap albums that hits you in a way that makes you remember exactly what you're doing and where you were when you heard it for the first time. Anything less than 5 stars for this album borders on blasphemous. I recommend making this album a collection cornerstone.
Standout Tracks: I Got A Love (My Favorite), In The House, Sun Won't Come Out, Carmel City....hell, every track on this album is top notch and they all stand out.
This is what happens when a Hip Hop album comes together.......2007-02-10
Like they were born out of the same womb, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth blend beats and flows together like a fine wine. It is well known that Pete Rock is one of the best producers in hip hop, and if you are wondering why, this album is exibit A. Every track on this album will make your head bob, while C.L. smooth rhymes like he is drunk on style. There are so many goods beats on this album, Pete Rock has extras leaking out of the ends of tracks, just tempting you will his unbelievably delicious recipes. Smooth compliments him so well, you are almost depressed when the album ends. It is truly music at its most perfect state, simmering on the stove, bubbling with flavor. This is delicious hip hop, one for every hip hop fans pantry. The "Main Ingredient" is as tasty as music gets.
GET ON THE MIC..........2006-12-17
The Main Ingredient is one of those Hip Hop LP's that you could put on everyday and it still wouldn't lose its flavor. Pete Rock's beats have never sounded so good and C.L.'s lyrics continued to remain on point throughout the length of the record. Classic Material!!!
Peace!

GREAT SONGS, MEDIOCRE SOUND.......2007-03-15
I bought this CD specifically because I was disappointed with the
sound of the Collectibles Records "Main Ingredient Golden Classics"
collection. I figured that since this was a Sony/BMG Legacy
2005 release that the remastering would be great. Wrong. It's not
awful, but it's not very good either. Some of the tracks have
a muddy "cassette-like" sound to them. Maybe the original masters
sound that way? In any case, I can't fault Cuba and the guys. This
stuff is prime 70's soul, and even with my complaints I think this
is the best collection of their music out there. "Rolling Down A
Mountainside" is CLASSIC. Sing, guys.....SANG!
GLAD TO HEAR THESE HITS AGAIN.......2007-03-08
THIS CD WAS EXCELLENT. THE LINER NOTES WERE VERY INFORMATIVE. THE QUALITY WAS GREAT. IT WAS WONDERFUL TO EXPERIENCE THE ARTISTIC QUALITY OF THESE SONGS AS DIGITALLY REMASTERED AND RE-EXPERIENCE THE GENIUS OF THESE MUSICIANS. I DOWNLOADED THE ENTIRE ALBUM ONTO MY IPOD AND THE SOUND QUALITY WAS DELICIOUS ESPECIALLY ON "JUST DON'T WANT TO BE LONELY"

Pure classic soul by a fantastic soul group........2007-05-07
This is easily my favorite album by the Main Ingredient. Every song on this album was on point. And plus, i think the album cover is one of the best i've ever seen. It illustrates such beauty. I'm glad to have finally gotten a hold of it on cd. I already own two copies of the album.
The Main Ingrediants Euphrates River Stands The Test Of Time.......2005-10-05
While surfing the net for music, I found The Main Ingrediants Greatest Hits. After Reading the songs on the compilation, I found that it was lacking, as many other greatest hits compilations do, many of the groups best songs.
Then I found The Main Ingrediants CD Euphrates River. This is an
album that I wore out in high school. Not only is the music great, the songs contain great lyrics. This is plain old good music. Not only are their versions of Summer Breeze, California My Way, Just Don't Want To Be Lonely, and Don't You Worry Bout A Thing different and unique from the originals, they stood on their own as great songs. They don't even remind you of the original artists version. Some might say The Main Ingrediants versions were the best.
Happiness Is Just Around The Bend and Have You Ever Tried It For Yourself will make any music lover any age want to get up and dance.
The lead singer Cuba Gooding Sr. the father of Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. has one of the unique and smooth voices
in R&B history, and The Ingrediants background vocals are as smooth as silk.
If you want to hear some great music, I highly recomend this CD.
I am loving it!.......2005-09-27
I have literally been looking for this CD for over 10 years and was thrill to finally find it. The sound quality is fantastic and I totally enjoy listening to it. If you once owned this in vinyl and would like to recapture the memories, I highly recommend this one!

Top 10.......2005-01-10
This cd is one of my top ten favorites. It sets the mood. It's a shame that singers today won't take time out to write and sing great music like that. Music today all sounds alike to me. A great Valentine gift for someone you love.
Something 'Bout Love..........2000-08-30
The Main Ingredient was a very rare find among groups that came along during the late sixties. They wrote and produced their own songs, thanks to the leadership of Don McPherson, the group's original lead singer. Following McPherson's untimely death, the remaining members of the group, Tony Silvester and Luther Simmons, had to somehow regroup. They are from Harlem, and they reached back into the old neighborhood to tab a replacement: Cuba Gooding. The new lineup continued to produce itself, and Bert DeCoteaux and Rene Hall continued to work on the arrangements. Replacing a songwriter as prolific and talented as McPherson was a little much to ask, so the group turned to outside writers. The first result for the new team was an out-the-box smash: the "Bittersweet" album (1972), with its gold single, "Everybody Plays The Fool." It was the kind of song that gives a group credibility and respectability, hitting #2 R&B and #3 pop. Further pop success would come in 1974 with the album "Euphrates River" and its runaway smash single, "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely." But between those two lps came this 1973 effort, which is easily the best loved of all the group's albums. This one was not about record sales. It was about setting a mood for romantic times. It was about celebrating womanhood (especially Black womanhood, as the risque album jacket aptly demonstrated). It was about establishing Cuba Gooding as a fan favorite, who wouldn't need hits, in order to sell records. This disc was definitely something else: It was Something 'Bout Love. A key to this album's popularity was the decision to recognize a great talent, whose star was about to light up the pop heavens: Stevie Wonder. Six of Stevie's songs (out of 10) were featured on "Afrodisiac." When you listen to the maturity of the sound; the lushness of the arrangements, and the flawlessness of the group's harmonies, it's hard to believe this is only the second album for the new lineup. Smokey Robinson named a whole genre with his landmark "Quiet Storm" album of 1975. This album pre-dates that one by two years, and one can make a strong case that "Afrodisiac" was the first album in the Quiet Storm style. As so aptly put in the liner notes, "The best thing that could ever happen to a love song, is to have it sung by The Main Ingredient." After the "Euphrates River" album, the group was hurt by lineup changes and changing consumer tastes. Tony left to try his hand at producing ("Supernatural Thing" for Ben E. King), and later formed a group he called "The New Ingredient." Cuba left to pursue an unfruitful solo career at Motown. But the three crooners re-formed and re-signed to RCA in 1980, recording two beautiful but poor-selling albums. Cuba and Tony also recorded as a duo in 1989. Today, Cuba continues to light up stages with a flamboyant stage show, which features two pretty-much anonymous background singers, who still go by a legendary name: The Main Ingredient.
Something Lovely.......2000-05-03
This 1973 outing by Cuba Gooding, "Tony" Sylvester, and Luther Simmons Jr. is one of the best releases from the Main Ingredient and considered by many fans to be a tribute to Stevie Wonder. Arranger Bert deCoteaux wraps their tight harmonies around 5 of the CDs 10 songs covering Wonder penned tunes including "Superwoman", "Girl Blue", "Something 'Bout Love", "I Am Yours", and "Something Lovely".Cuba's lead vocals gracefully interweaving with DeCoteaux's string arrangements provides a full course meal of "quiet storm" masterpieces. The only songs which contribute uptempo rhythms is a tasteful cover of the Isley Brothers "Work To Do" and "You Can Call Me Rover."If a fan/collector of the sultry vocals offered during the 70s, this CD edition will also having you agree that it's something lovely.
It's like living back in "the day"........1999-03-13
I've been hunting high and low for AFRODISIAC on CD or even as an album, with no success. I was more than impressed and pleased to find it on Amazon.com. Grab your high heel sneakers, gaberdines and put that blue light back in the basement! This CD brings back memories that anyone from that era will treasure. Truly a jewel.
A Classic.......1998-12-27
Afrodisiac by The Main Ingredient is a well kept secret. The album is simply majestic. Go ahead, treat your ears and soul to this melodious palate. You won't regret. My personal favorite is "Girl Blue."

It is so good to be able to listen to MUSIC! Though I truly miss the voice of Cuba Gooding, Sr., the group has moved with the millineum. True sounds of music was the 70s', 80s' and early 90s'---I often wonder what happened?? thank you to a group who has put it out there for the tried and true music lovers!!!!
The Most Disrespected CD of All-Time.......2005-02-25
This cd is awesome. It's too bad that no airplay has come from this cd. From song number 1 to the last song is a winner. Look at the price that it is being offered for this cd on on Amazon, you can't go wrong. Just check out the sampler and listen and you will be blown away. These guys have been good every since the great recordings "Everybody Plays the Fool" and "I Just Don't Wanna Be Lonely". There's so much good music out there by these older artists that people should branch out give them a chance and get ready to be blown away. They have always given their all to the music they performed because in their day if you couldn't sing, no contract was offered. The altering of the voices were not available. No making you in the day. You can thank me later when you listen and buy. Thanks Amazon for a top notched site that allows us to give a true recommendation of music without holding back. Your lost if you don't listen to the sampler and purchase.

Good collection of obscure soul.......2002-07-09
Lovers of true Soul music rejoice. Lotsa good stuff here in the form of Seventies Soul ballads. While "Be Thankful for What You Got" is familiar to lovers of 70s, Soul, most of these tunes would be remembered only by those who had the albums or heard them occasionally on Soul Radio stations at the time. "I Gave To You" by the Delphonics is lesser-known, but up to the usual high standards of this popular group. "She's Good" features Jermaine instead of Michael of the Jackson 5. "Remember the Rain" is an excellent J-5 soundalike that is good on it's own terms. "Body and Soul" by the Lost Generation is not to be confused with the jazz classic, but is a lovely tune nonetheless as are the other tunes in this set.
Awesome collection.......2002-01-19
If you're an aficionado of rare Old School soul and hard to find tracks, you can't beat this series. Both Volumes 1 and 2 are incredible.
nice variety of slow jams.......2001-11-13
a nice variety and collection of slow jams, especially the song by Charles Mann entiltled " say you love me too." However, the song by Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, "I should be your lover", does not appear on the CD as noted. Instead, a dance tune by Chuck Brown ( I think he's the artist) has been erroneously recorded in place of Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes' song.

5 stars.......2007-06-25
This home-made record is one of the best by Horn; it's fresh, modern... the version of The look of love is one of the best I've ever heard, and even Fever or All or nothing at all; it's a superb album, where Shirley plays piano wonderfully; I love all the songs on "The main ingredient", and I strongly suggest to buy this album.
Sensational Horn!.......2001-12-13
This is an incredible effort! The best Horn CD in my collection. Her version of "Look of Love" by far trumps the Krall version of the same name. I can best characterize the CD as bluesy, not over produced, and simply a palpable joy to listen to. The set up piece on track 1 just seems out of place given the ballad / rather maudlin context of the work. Highly recommended.
Favorite Horn.......2001-08-03
This disc has the trademark Horn stylings, including her inimitable pace and phrasing. It is the most upbeat of her usually ballad-dominated discs, giving off a smoking heat and bluesy tinge that mark this record as unique amidst her notable ouevre. The immediacy of the recording process pays off in the feel of the album. She is a singer par excellence and a talented pianist. This disc is highly recommended.
Horn's simplistic performance sizzles.......2001-04-06
Shirley Horn recorded this outing at her home with some of the top names in jazz and the result is smooth jazz-vocal CD with superb arrangements. It would be five stars, though, but Horn has a habit of making all selections sound the same with similar intonation and pitch. But what saves her here is a first-rate selection of tracks. This is dim the lights, quiet hour listening.
What Tasty Ingredient Has Made Shirley Horn the Great!.......2000-07-09
Would it be her Debussy-like piano? Or the formula trio+voice with those downtempo lazy and full of silence tracks? Do you remember "Fever" as a song commonly and definitely associated to Peggy Lee or even Elvis Presley? Do you remember "The Look of Love" as a song timely linked to Sergio Mendes & Brazil'66 or even the composer Burt Bacharach rendition? Now listen to Ms.Horn's takes. There's also a delightful "Peel Me A Grape". Her formula is forever. All stars.

Album Description
The main ingredients in The Main Ingredient's success were great singing and catchy songs. This Soul trio enjoyed both R&B and Pop success in the '70s with hit songs such as 'Everybody Plays The Fool' and 'Just Don't Want To Be Lonely', both of which are included in this compilation featuring the group's best work. Interesting to note that Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr.'s father was the group's lead singer.
Customer Reviews:
Good compilation but... Some great hits are missing!.......2007-03-06
If you go crazy for 70s Soul music, this CD is a good beginning for you. However, if you would like to appreciate the excellency of The Main Ingredient as one of the best Soul groups of the 70s, try to get their "Euphrates River" album (actually available in an expensive Japanese edition.) If you are willing to pay the sticker price for it, I assure you won't be dissapointed!
A Piece of History.......2007-01-26
What can you say about a group that withstood the test of time? As a little girl I can remember hearing their hits from my fathers 8 track tape player. Songs like, I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely and Rolling Down A Mountainside. Each time I hear these songs, they transport me to a happier time, to a simpler time when everything was fun and music still had meaning. Here's to you Main Ingredient. Thank you for giving us your best!
Love that 1970's Soul.......2002-04-07
The Main Ingredient were one of the groups that helped define Soul Music of the 1970's. Everybody Plays The Fool, Rolling Down a Mountain Side, Happiness Around The Bend, represented the uptempo dance music that later influenced disco. Spinning Around and Just Don't want to be lonely are classic ballads.
Golden Classics.......2002-03-07
What a blast from the past ...I bought this CD for a few tunes but while listening to the whole thing I found myself remembering most of them . I may be dating myself, but I wish that musicians still did soul music like this .
Great Classic Songs.......2000-03-03
