Shyne [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
When an unproven MC is branded a "Notorious B.I.G. sound-alike," career doom is imminent. Arguably the two MCs do share similar vocal drones. And yeah, they're both unapologetic slum-centered lyricists. However, Shyne's insipid tales of selling dope, packing heat, and sleeping with seedy "ho's" are artless, unlike Biggie's. Shyne does up the ante, but it's in all of the wrong ways (not only does he sleep with multiple "ho's" in his verses but he tells 'em to "Get Out" when he's done). The most revealing track on the album is the spoken-word interlude "Dear America," where Shyne eloquently explains how America made him "a lost cause." "Niggas Gonna Die," "Whatcha Gonna Do," and "The Life" are all ridiculously dark, violent, and thuggish. However, Shyne's slow, moody drawl flows well over the reggae-tinged riddims of "Bang" and "Bad Boyz," featuring reggae balladeer du jour Barrington Levy. Sadly, Puff Daddy's unshakeable influence at Bad Boy (e.g., the tried-and-true rhythm sampled on the D.O.C.'s "Funky Enough" is borrowed on "That's Gangsta") further corrupts this album. And why a rapper with a shady past (present and future?) would use his debut album to broadcast his illegal exploits to the world is anyone's guess. In the end, a fast-forward button should never receive this much love. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars One of My favorite albums ever.......2007-01-15

This album is as real as it gets. This album is kinda crazy because it was Shyne's first album. He addressed a lot of things that weren't addressed as openly as he did it. He really gave it to you the way it is and if you are a rap fan then you would love this album.

2 out of 5 stars This album truly is forgettable.......2006-07-29

This album bores me out of my mind. Only two decent tracks: Bad boys and Bonnie and Clyde. And I'm no avid radio listener. BET and MTV actually hit the nail on the head with these tracks. So i guess they good for somethin.

5 out of 5 stars Po is the King of NY...buried alive........2006-01-08

Excellent cd, but i have to admit #5 isnt as good or deep as the rest of the cd. I've had this cd for 4 years now and i still kinda dont like that one track.

The last track is one of the best raps ever.
And he does NOT sound like homeboy!
The beats on this album are tailor made to Po. Its like...these tracks could never be for another artist.
Also, cop the clean version too; it has great edits, making it sound like a whole different cd.

*to all hating reviewers: if u write a negative review come with more than "Oh it sucks!" ITs like none of u are over 13 yet. And why conjure up negative energy writing a review for something u prolly haven't paid for?*

4 out of 5 stars SHYNE.......2005-12-15

I LOVE THIS CD. IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO LISTEN TO ALL OF IT BECAUSE I WAS ONLY GETTING DOWN TO A FEW BUT I LOVE IT. ITS RARE I FIND A CD WHERE ALMOST ALL THE CD IS EVEN WORTH BUYING. I WAS BLOWN AWAY WITH HIS WORDS.. ITS KIND OF DARK I THINK

3 out of 5 stars honestly.......2005-11-26

If Puff wasnt the Executive Producer and they would have gotton sone better beats in this one it would be ok but I really dont play this one but I do like Shyne he is gangsta and ask Puff he knows whats up.

In contemporary rap, incarceration pays. Get locked up, and your aura grows--you soon become a 'hood economist, legendary and independently wealthy. When word leaked out that Shyne was negotiating multimillion-dollar record contracts from inside the big house, his fan base grew exponentially. It doesn't matter that his self-titled debut was only so-so. Rather than take the obvious bait and dis alleged snitch P Diddy across these 13 tracks, he instead goes after media darling 50 Cent. Phoning in his verses (literally) on "For the Record," he charges that 50 is a snitch and studio thug. Now that's gangsta. There are a few hidden gems here among the rehashed beats and songs. Kanye West continues to make everyone sound good; his brooding, string-laden soundscape on "More or Less" perfectly matches Shyne's gothic vocal tone and declarations: "hip-hop ain't responsible for violence in America/America's responsible for violence in America." Beat baron Just Blaze does his part on "Diamonds and Mac 10's," but most of the record is filled with muddy production. Nothing here matches the appeal of his debut's "Bad Boyz" collaboration with Barrington Levy, but this is still a timely, topical release. --Dalton Higgins

3 out of 5 stars Its alright (3 and 1/2 stars).......2007-06-13

You've got to admit that Shyne has been through a lot. When he first came in the game he was accused of being a B.I.G. clone so much that Biggie fanatics like Lil Kim(yeah this Michael Jackson lookalike is in position to talk about somebody LOL!) took shots at him in songs and reviews. After shooting up a club for an acne-faced weasel who would later turn his back on him, he gets jailed and does this album. The main problem with the album is not necessarily Shyne but the production. Quasi O G which samples Bob Marley's No More Trouble is an excellent track and I'll give Shyne some credit for talking about something of substance. The Kanye West produced More Or Less is a certified banger with Shyne spitting his best verses. We all know Behind The Walls was Kurupt song from the Oz soundtrack but the East Coast Gangsta mix is just a good and even though the song Shyne was on Swizz Beats' Ghetto Stories, I'll count it as a standout track. Shyne rips Fiddy a new one on For The Record(recorded while he was in jail) and Martyr is one of the best songs on here. Unfortunatly it goes down hill from there. Jimmy Choo is a halfhearted attempt at a club record with lifeless vocals from Ashanti on the chorus. Songs like Godfather and Edge are boring as Shyne spits uninspired rhymes over uninspired beats(I dont blame him fully I blame the producers too). The Gang is another lukewarm joint where Foxy Brown busts the only noteworthy verse on the song(she ripped it!). The Just Blaze produced tracks, Here With Me and Diamonds And Mack10's range from boring to horrendous plus those beats sound like leftovers from some Fabolous album. Bottom Line: GodFather Buried Alive is not the best that a rapper like Shyne can offer. The first six songs proved that if you put him over a dope beat he goes off. But the last six songs show that if you put him over an uninspired beat his raps will be as uninspired as the beat. All in all I would recommend it just be prepared to bump into everything I said.

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Never Been Released.......2007-01-15

This album is full of cuts off his first album. I dont think that an album full of cuts is going to do too hot.

3 out of 5 stars Not At His Best, But.......2006-10-03

it does have some cuts, the one with kanye, also after hearing rappers from the Yay Area(Dre) an Sac(X) its hard 2 make a album in jail period, so dont go into this thinking What Happend.

But to the boy below me yellin "I SAY HANDS UP" How could u be a studio gangsta without being in a studio, + how can u get shot 3 times an say u in the club but nobody see's u.

1 out of 5 stars SHYNE GO GET UR OWN STYLE!!BIGGIE WANNA BE........2006-07-24

4 out of 5 stars Godfather Buried Alive.......2006-02-18

Shyne Po has been manifesting lasting warfare memories long before droning gavel knockings set the prelude to his conviction. Although 2009 dates his prison release, Godfather Buried Alive not only provides answers for today, but stirs echoes of gangster classics past. Shyne radiates a newer street persuasion in the mafia epic; he sweeps up all lingering street savagery and combines it in an untamed version of a Brooklyn Scarface.

Not to be confused, Godfather... isn't gory as it is ruthless. Shyne callously rides into the sunset beginning with the Kanye West produced "More or Less," a drugstore cowboy cinematic revue, injected with Western whistles that screams modern day Clint Eastwood. Shyne's vigilant Wild West renegade arrives back at his locale, revisiting enemies that are soon to suffocate in his vengeance. As Foxy ignites a chorus behind Shyne's walk in fire, his flow breeds volatility unbridled in tenacity and tirade, "G is a G, a key is a key, a snitch is a fish, with no fins, they cant swim and I dump `em in the river." In another combo, "The Gang," the two surprise by co-signing their own hot Brooklyn signatures to the `95 Raekwon-Nas classic "Verbal Intercourse".

In fact, Godfather... is more about a by-product of Shyne's tumultuous brainstorming activity behind bars. He successfully composes intelligently twisted prison rhymes that instantly jump right off the paper. While Shyne refers to "talking about the life that's mine," his lyrical ability is unleashed in "Godfather," a devious New York City track driven by sinister strings and creaky violins. While some gangster rappers limp through illustrations of aggression and anger, Shyne expands to extended levels of mutilation and indecency, breathing wisps of vivid imagery into his own street story; "My minds poison, corrupted in disease, 360 keys, money make the world spin, I make your chest smoke, have your mother singing hymns, particles in your brains up on your timbs."

Longtime producer extraordinaire BucWild lays out Bob Marley's "No More Trouble" sample in "Quasi OG," a munificent track that leans towards Shyne's conscious side, revealing a recognition of hip-hop's lack of a political eye. From capitalism to conspiracy theory, Shyne acknowledges the dark social spectrum that looms over the direction of Black-American youth and his prison brethren. Another notable is the dramatic "Diamonds and Mac 10s," a Just Blaze produced track that is skillfully set in two tones: one of an emotive Shyne "dying and cryin' inside," pleading to God in redemptive calling for refuge and acceptance; the other is the opposite side of the prison wall healing worlds with exaltation, triumph and hope, discernible by big blasting trumpets and horns.

Not to his discredit, Shyne lays victim to a weaker side of production. "Shyne," an otherwise pop track in chorus and verse, is left embarrassingly unblessed by Swiss Beatz's humdrum claps, deadbeat bassline, and equally depressive weeping violin loop. "Jimmy Choo" is a similarly unsuccessful track that follows the same R&B formula as Shyne's previous hit "Bonnie and Shyne," but marginally lacks originality and the kick that even songstress Ashanti cannot save. Poorly laced with Murder Inc. dinky electronica disinherits any incidental chemistry between the two artists, thus making the track more suitable for a remix. "For the Record," is a response to the 50 Cent threat recorded through DAT, but the result is minimal (i.e. Canibus vs. LL) and less controversial than once initially regarded.

However, as Godfather... commits to a deeper truth, Shyne's catbird seat is high outside of Clinton Correctional Facility. He never shrouds his personal funeral hymns in anything but the darkest and most candid form of gangster-ism; appreciation of this amongst peers in the industry is widespread, but is soon met with the realization that that one of today's best is behind bars.
