Cypress Hill is either hip-hop's most secretly talented band or its luckiest. How else do you explain four albums--Cypress Hill, Black Sunday, III (Temple of Boom), and now IV--over seven years that all use the same rote formula? Jimmy Page was a top London studio guitarist before he got rich and famous as the musical leader of Led Zeppelin. The group's fourth--and arguably their finest--album is as much a tribute to his technique as a monument to his versatility. Page produced the album, co-wrote all eight songs, and played mandolin as well as all the guitars. Musically, this 1971 disc ranges from acoustic English folke ("Goin' to California" and "The Battle of Evermore," the latter featuring the late Fairport Convention frontwoman Sandy Denny) to bone-crushing, bluesy riff-slinging. On the album's centerpiece, "Stairway to Heaven," these light and dark strains are dramatically intertwined. Let's hear it for The Battle of Evermore, one of many underrated songs by Led Zeppelin. That song is beautiful, and everyone skips over it. Stop that!

Led Zeppelin have always been my favorite band and also the best live show I saw, and this album is flawless. Sexy, hard rocking, soulful, bluesy, mystical, otherworldly, timeless...all wrapped up into one glorious album.

Led Zeppelin IV, with it's rock opus Stairway To Heaven, secured the band's status as rock gods when it was released in 1971, and still remains the third best-selling album of all time. The songs are all staples on today's classic-rock radio, and they're all still very much a part of people's lives. Just yesterday, I saw someone wearing a t-shirt with the ZOSO album cover image on the front of it. Musically, Led Zeppelin IV offers a variety of heavy-metal, blues, acoustic music, and rock n' roll. The album opens with the enthusiastic and lusty Black Dog. With Robert Plant scream-singing sensuous lyrics and Jimmy Page playing a wicked-fast guitar riff, the song is a classic. It's followed by another classic, Rock And Roll. With lyrics reminicent of 1950s era rock n' roll, and a heavier, electric, and updated version of that genre, the song definitely lives up to it's title. The Battle Of Evermore is an acoustic mandolin dominated, medievil fantasy that has an otherworldly aura. It's followed by the legendary Stairway To Heaven, and of course, it's one of the greatest songs in the history of rock music, and it carries significant weight on this album. Beginning with only an acoustic guitar and flute, it deliberately and skillfully builds through several tempo changes and melodies untill it reaches the heights of screaming heavy-metal brilliance. The mood of the song is reflective and hopeful, and it strikes a chord in people's hearts and thoughts every time they hear it. It was was destined to become the legend that it is and will always be. Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks both include inventive guitar, interesting lyrics, and they rock with unrelenting beats. The acoustic and mellow Going To California adds variety and a change of pace. The album closes with another classic, When The Levee Breaks, a heavy-metal-meets-the-blues celebration of intense expression. John Bonham's powerful, and as always, excellant drums are highlighted on this one, and the song closes this classic album perfectly. Led Zeppelin IV is most definitely a classic rock legend. It will be an indelible part of our lives and rock music forever, and year after year after year, Stairway To Heaven will be named the The Number One Song Of All-Time on classic-rock radio stations all over the world.

The original and definitive heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin made their mark in several other categories with their fourth album. The vocals of Robert Plant, guitar playing of Jimmy Page, and drumming of John Bonham are all the stuff of legend. John Paul Jones brings extra versatility and originality on bass, keyboard AND acoustic guitar. The songs:

Black Dog - blues-influenced (like a lot of earlier Zeppelin), loud and raunchy (in the best kind of way), some over-the-top vocal stylings
Rock And Roll - barn-burning blues and a great vehicle to show off one of the greatest rock drummers ever
The Battle Of Evermore - inventive art rock that proved that these guys were not only great rockers, but great artists as well
Stairway To Heaven - the definitive power ballad
Misty Mountain Hop - more barn-burning blues with monstrously huge guitar sounds and distinctive electric piano riff
Four Sticks - raucous art rock, using a crazy time signature and chord voicing that few bands other than Rush and Jethro Tull would dare to touch

The production and engineering behind this album are the icing on the cake. Recording students are still studying and copying this stuff and trying to reproduce the "Bonham drum sound" to this day. The generous echoes and overdubs on Plant's vocals somehow never seem overdone or dated.

This is the amazing work of an amazing team of players and recording experts on their best days ever. Rock fans should be intimately familiar with this timeless and hugely influential CD.

i know that a lot of people claim to have gone to the original woodstock concert, but i really did. and of all the great bands who played there, this was the best. i will never forget their great set. the lead singer and guitarist was a black man who played his guitar left-handed. the best song they played there was a great, great song about somebody named Purple Hayes, who could get into your mind. i think the title of the song was "Purple Hayes." unfortunately i have never been able to find that song on an album, but this album is great anyway. i just discovered it, and it is full of great songs. there is one song here called "Stairway to Heaven," which is about a stairway that goes up to Heaven. cool. and there is other neat stuff, too. get this record. you should. and if anyone knows what album "Purple Hayes" is on, please please please let me know.

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as "Bridge over Troubled Water," "Danny Boy," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. I honestly can't say I like country music. I just don't care for most of the genre. The only artist from this genre that I do listen to is Johnny Cash. Of all of the American recordings Johnny has worked on with record producer Rick Rubin, American IV: The Man Comes Around" is easily my personal favorite. As much as I like Johnny's last album American V, I just didn't think the material held up as well as the fourth volume.

What I love about American IV: The Man Comes Around is the sparse, haunting melodies that lingers through out the album. Secondly I love Johnny's deep baritone vocals on this cd especially on his covers of "Hurt" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". One of my personal favorite tracks is Johnny's cover of the Nine Inch Nails' track "Hurt". The emotions he puts into the song really moved me. I also loved the Sting song "I Hung My Head". Johnny does a great job at storytelling through this song. His voice is so warm and deep on this track. Johnny's duet with Nick Cave on the Hank Williams' classic "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry" is absolutely stunning. Both men really compliment each other with their own deep vocals.

While I do like Johnny's other American recordings, they weren't as perfect to me as American IV: The Man Comes Around is. I can listen to this cd without skipping a single track.

I popped this CD in on the way to Vegas from Los Angeles in the middle of the night. Johnny's haunting voice came booming through the speakers like a soundtrack to the desert. Full of stories and vivid descriptions this CD cant be described as anything less than epic. Moving along like a Steam Train up hill the music gains momentum and impresses more with each bar sung. If youre looking for a little dark night, outlaw country Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around is just what you need.

I've got the last two American series recordings that Johnny Cash did and this one is way better than his last. I love them both, but if you have neither, get this one first. His cover of "Hurt" is outstanding. You can see the video on YouTube of both his cover and the original by Nine Inch Nails. It's amazing just how much better he does this song, its as if it was written just for him.

Note: I am not generally a Country Western fan, and yet this series hits a strong note in me.

Ive never really was into country music, but last week Ive bought 2 Cash CD's . One of them, the American V , is an instant pleasure, no need to adjust. Its WARM, acoustic, filling, emotional, calm. Great CD!

I have always liked Johnny Cash but had none of his CDs. This CD shows the difference between a performer and an artist. This CD is true art. The whole Cd has a very deep message, if you listen and then think of what Johnny is saying. The 1st song "The Man Comes Around" is maybe the BEST SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD, but certainly one of the best.

Accuse Rod Stewart of what you like--through the years he's been called a philanderer, a has-been, a pageant-ish progenitor of puff rock--but as he has consistently proved with his Great American Songbook series, the concept of dignity is not lost on him. There is a time, after all, for leaping across stages in leopard-print spandex while shamelessly parading an unparalleled gift for scratchy-voiced seduction, and he is past it. Past his prime is another thing. On this fourth installation of the Clive Davis-produced series, Stewart again makes excellent use of his rolodex: Diana Ross, whose affection for this material comes through as convincingly as her spike-haired partner's, cuddles up for opener "I've Got a Crush On You," Chaka Khan packs her bags but not her mighty vocals for "You Send Me," and Sir Elton shelves the recent balladeer's instincts for a rip-roaring run through "Makin' Whoopee." A handful of marquee instrumentalists also returned Rod's calls-- Dave Koz blows sax on "Nevertheless," and trumpeters Chris Botti and Roy Hargrove turn up the heat on "I Wish You Love" and "My One and Only Love" respectively. As on earlier discs, though, it's when Rod rules the spotlight alone that he can be most compelling: Cue up "My Funny Valentine" in the right frame of mind and you may never need to hear it sung by another. Retiring the satin shirts in favor of this material was the smartest move Stewart ever made. --Tammy La Gorce

If I had heard this Volume IV first I never would have bought the others. Fortunately that was not the case and I have all the other CD's in this Songbook series he did.

We have purchased all four of the songbook CD's, and enjoy all equally. This is a nice and easy listen, for relaxing times. Stewart seems to feel the moods of the songs, and performs them with style. My wife plays them at her restaurant and gets many good compliments also.

This is a misnomer--not all of these duets are all that famous--but it's a fine compilation nonetheless. You'll hear selections from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc at their most elegant French), Madama Butterfly (Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Scotto--an impassioned pair), Lucia di Lammermoor (a classy Alfredo Kraus and Edita Gruberova), the lovely Lakme duet, The Presentation of the Silver Rose from Der Rosenkavalier (with the earnest Christa Ludwig and the other-worldly Teresa Stich-Randall), and a fine Trovatore "Miserere" (with Leontyne Price and Franco Bonisolli singing up a storm). There are many others, too--a veritable cornucopia of couplings--and a treat for the opera lover. --Robert Levine

This is a really great CD for the price. It has many of the famous Arias on it and although the singers may not be the best out there they are certainly very good. This is cheaper than the price of a take away lunch; you can't go wrong with this CD.

The title of this cd is misleading and I found myself wondering whose list did they use. That is not to say that there aren't some real treasures included here. The duet from Lakme is lovely in every way, Mady Mesple in particular, very beautful and very french, and far superior to Sutherlands hooty approach. Scotto and Bergonzi are superb, the Tristan and Isolde of Vickers and Dernesch truly other worldly, and the presentation of the rose duet with the young Ludwig and the astonishing Teresa Stich- Randell had me playing it over and over and I still can't believe it, but the most famous??? This cd is definitly worth buying, and I hated giving it only 3 stars but if you're talking most famous you could fill a couple of cd's with Puccini, not to mention Verdi, Mozart, etc. before Bizet's Les Pecheurs des perles, beautiful as it is, made the most famous list.

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.

This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!

I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.

As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!

I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

My 12 month old loves this CD and happily bops away to the music (in the car he sometimes even starts singing!). We like it too and not being very well versed in Classical music, it is a nice mix for us.

This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price. Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!

I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.

I only paid like $4 here on amazon for it and I gladdly would of paid more for such a great cd. Its a great cd for such a great price!

I've enjoyed everthing Godsamck has put out. Although my favorite is the self titled CD (Godsmack), IV still holds its own.

Maybe becasue I'm 52, but damn I enjoy this CD! And maybe becasue I'm an "old timer" I really enjoy the melodies of HOLLOW and MAMA, these are infectious push repeat again and again type of songs.

The enjoyment of a rock and roll song is not always in the flashy guitars or head banging sond, it is from a feel a song gives you a mood it can out you in, a palce it can take you.

And I have no problem rolling down the highway, and turning this CD up full blast. A good effort, maybe dissapoints its early fans, but will make up for it with the new ones it will bring in. And its smackdown enough, to keep away most of the old dudes.

Sometimes some of the harsh sound and bleeting guitars need to betoned down just a tad, to let the soul of the group let loose.

I have never been a huge fan of Godsmack (I wonder if they have to pay royalties to Alice In Chains for that....), but I have always liked the singer Scully's voice, and seem to always wish I had some of their discs around....the guitarist also plays some pretty cool riffs, and has a great, thick tone that I like. Having owned no previous Godsmack albums, I picked up their latest and liked it even more than I thought I would.

A good modern rock/metal album with a nice flow and some variety all the way through, with especially standout vocals and some interesting experimental textures and guitar...I also like the sequel to their breakout hit from '98 "Voodoo Too". Pretty cool stuff, really. I listen to way too much prog metal, and sometimes this sort of thing is just what I want to hear. Cool stuff, check it out.

What the hell happened to these guys, not that they had much to offer in the past but damn, this is the apitamy of falling off. This band sucks just more so then they ever did. When your a big name band in the past then you come to play the Charleston Municipal Auditorium, you have really hit rock bottom!!. You can bet I will not be attending, and i cant imagine many others attending either!

Give it up Godsmack your not with the times anymore, your horrible

Glenn Gould's recording debut in 1955 of Bach's Goldberg Variations took the world by storm. His decidedly un-Romantic view, absolute technical skill, startling lucidity, and right-on rhythmic changes, combined with his eccentricities--audible humming, sometimes outrageously fast tempi--made him an instantly legendary pianist and elucidated Bach's music in a whole new way. Gould's final recording, 26 years later, was also of the Goldbergs. It's a more relaxed, sometimes much slower, more inward reading (although still very much his own, complete with oddly ferocious attacks and accents), in which he offers repeats of the first half of 15 of the Variations. Both performances are glorious, each in its own way, and this luxurious new set of three CDs is entertaining, a joy to hear, and revelatory; it belongs in any music lover's collection. The third CD is devoted to outtakes and chatter from recording sessions. At one point, Gould improvises "God Save the King" and exhibits how it turns into "The Star-Spangled Banner." Glenn Gould has mastered the Bach, Goldberg Variations with out a question of doubt. His playing and style is absolutely amazing. The part that spoils the whole thing for me is when he starts humming. If you listen to it with the head phones on you can hear him humming away in the back ground. It is such a shame as he spoils his own brilliant performance.

Imagine going to live piano recital. The music is gorgeous, you're really getting into it - and the person next to you starts humming along. You try to block it out, but the more you do, the more conscious of it you become. It becomes all you can hear, and suddenly the performance is just background noise to the humming. That's my experience with these CDs, the 1981 version more so than the 1955. Perhaps the humming's not so prominent when played on a proper stereo system, but listening on my PC with a pair of headphones, the humming is all I hear, and it's absolutely maddening. I can deal with the hiss, but the infernal humming is just too much for my mere mortal concentration. It may be the most amazing performance of anything ever, but if you can't listen to it, does it matter?

My title comes from the editorial review above. Why such attacks? Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations for a harpsichord with two registers (two keyboards). Until Wanda Ladowska revived them in the 1930s, on a "pian-arpsichord" built specially for her, they were considered unplayable on piano. That opinion was correct, like it or not. The contrasts of register, intrinsic to the music, CANNOT be rendered intelligently merely by hammering ornaments and dancing on the pedals. Some pianists, however, come closer to making decent music of the Goldbergs by subduing their egos and letting the delicacy of the counterpoint be heard. There may be a case for playing Bach's other harpsichord solo works on piano -- Richard Goode does a decent job, for instance -- but the Goldberg Variations belong on harpsichord only forevermore.

To be a sonic witness to this music is a real treat. Gould's approach both times is so personal and probing. What is really satisfying is how the 1981 recording is not just a rehash of 1955. Each era has it's own unique and distinct personality. This is a "must" in your musical collection.

This 3-disc package includes Glenn Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations, with raw exuberance and breakneck speed. Disc 2 contains his 1981 reinterpretation, and this music has never sounded more divinely beautiful to this perpetual Bach student. Disc 3 is icing on the cake, featuring Gould's professorial zeal and musical logic (also lame but endearing humor). If you love the Goldberg--and I passionately hope you will--then curiosity will lead you to superb piano versions by Andras Schiff and Murray Perahia, and Wanda Landowska on the harpsichord. For further Bachian "wonder," Artur Schnabel's recording of the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue is awesome. Gould's Bach, however, remains my favorite. As for the brouhaha about his sometimes audible humming, I love it: Glenn lives!
