Like Bahamadia before her, Jean Grae carries the burden of being way too clever a "femcee" for the music business to behold. (For dumbed-down rhymes, go to Gangsta Boo.) When Grae's in battle-rap mode, her vocal clarity and lyrical dexterity remind one of Jay-Z. However, the relationship-focused confessionals elicit an even greater response because they're so darn honest. "Give It Up" or "P.S." sound like profound Emily Dickinson love poems read with a contemporary New York 'hood twist. Grae has always needed to find equally ambitious beats to match her fiery flows, and this time around she's inched a bit closer to that ideal. Some of 9th Wonder's dirty beats (like "Don't Rush Me") may help her win over slightly larger audiences, but even she admits that her "flow don't make appropriate wealth." Of course, if sales reflected skills, This Week would blow up and Grae would be sitting pretty next to P Diddy. --Dalton Higgins

3 out of 5 stars You always will hear a waltz from Richard Rodgers.......2007-01-13

An example of Rodgers trying to fit in a new contributor of lyrics, but the match wasn't there, yet even so, his melodic mastery shone through.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than it's reputation........2006-11-02

Despite being considered a flop by it's creative team, this is the one of Sondheim's "lyrics only" musicals I return to most often. It's melancholy charm is underlined by Rodgers' highly hummable tunes combined with Sondheim's reluctant lyrics. They are partly bitter and partly forced "happy". I love it.

4 out of 5 stars An unappreciated score by a fine cast.......2004-02-04

Even though the show was not a success and the authors have all taken their turns at trashing it, this recording makes a strong case for DO I HEAR A WALTZ.

It's another fine record production by Goddard Lieberson. Rodgers (who was from all reports drinking and quite nasty to his collaborators) came up with many of his trademark melodies and the title song won deserved popularity outside of the show. Sondheim for his part creates some crackling good lyrics ("Someone Woke Up"; "What Do We Do We Fly!") but its an odd score... you hear the romantic older style love songs from Rodgers with fairly basic (dare we say dull) lyrics then some wonderful lyrics set to atypical Rodgers tunes. Then suddenly it all comes together in the final few numbers: The Title Song, "Perfectly Lovely Couple" and "Thank You So Much." Maybe it's a show that Encores will revive someday. In the meantime we can appreciate this original cast album and thank Sony for releasing it on Cd with good notes and a synopsis in the booklet!

4 out of 5 stars "Someone Woke Up.....".......2003-10-04

So begins the delightful DO I HEAR A WALTZ?, one of Richard Rodgers' most accomplished post-Hammerstein scores. Not since his days with Lorenz Hart had Rodgers written such an energetic, youthful and joyful score. Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are witty and wonderful. DO I HEAR A WALTZ? received a lukewarm response from critics and audiences, lasting only 220 performances at the 46th Street Theatre.

Based on Arthur Laurents' play THE TIME OF THE CUCKOO (which turned into the film SUMMERTIME starring Katharine Hepburn), the story concerns a teacher, Leona Samish (played by Elizabeth Allen), who's holiday in Venice is dominated by her romance with the handsome Renato di Rossi (played by Sergio Franchi). There are also a host of colorful supporting characters including the ebullient hotelier Signora Fioria (Carol Bruce - SARATOGA).

The score is delicious with the opening number perfectly setting up the scene ("Someone Woke Up"), to Fioria's big number "This Week Americans", and the 11 o'clock number "Stay". There's also the Title Song, sung for all its worth by the delicious belt of Elizabeth Allen.

For all the problems that plagued the musical during its inception, nothing shows on the sparkling cast album, where it sounds like the biggest hit of the season. For Broadway fans, this CD is a must-own.

5 out of 5 stars You MUST hear a 'Waltz'!.......2003-06-16

Please, give this a chance. Forget what you've read and just sit and listen. Read the libretto, available at lots of libraries, or read "Time of the Cuckoo" which Arthur Laurents based "Waltz" on. The combo of Rodgers and Sondheim is always sneered at--maybe, like me, you will see that Rodgers romanticism and Sondheim's sort of optimistic realism are actually the perfect mismatch for the endearingly troubled characters in the play.

Mr.Producer, forget all the basicstage gossip and let the score sell the show for you. Audiences, demand your favorite companies mount a production!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!!!!!.......2007-06-01

I rarely am impressed by new millenium era Hip-Hop, but I have to say that this young lady is one of the best MCs I've heard in years!!This album is true raw poetry. Do not get this album if your wanting the hedonistic, sociopathic, semi-literate rantings of the current era of hip-hop! This gem is like straight from the golden age. The production for the most part is solid, although there were a few beats that I didn't care for.The beats that do shine however, truly match the moods of the rhymes. This album speaks on what hip-hop is truly supposed to be about, the human condition. Mad props Jean, I love you baby!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I <3 Jean Grae.......2007-05-14

This Jeanius is amazing. Especially "Supa Luv". Some of the beats for the songs could be a little better in my opinion, but that does not take away from her talent. I love her!

5 out of 5 stars YA'LL BETTA STOP PLAYIN!!!!!.......2007-02-25

Jean Grae is the best female rapper in the game that people ignore to the core. It's a shame that hip hop has fallin into a eternal abyss thanks to the music industry that would rather promote garbage than real music. I loved her first album (Attack of...) for those that don't know it was an invisible classic. THIS WEEK is so lyrically precise and the beats are very thourough. She is #$%%^ on weak female "entertainers" such as Remi Ma, Lil Kim etc. Dopest MC since Laryn Hill, Rah Digga, and the Lyte. This album is also a classic!!! Period!!!

4 out of 5 stars Madd Love.......2006-10-03

I'm gonna keep it simple....If you don't know hip hop you probably won't feel this joint. If you're used to this watered down, supposedly pimped out, iced out, VIP-out, so called gangsta crap that the radio and TV are filling you head with these days, you probably won't feel this joint. If you perfer to hear about the size of rims or how low your chain hangs this is not for you. In other words....THIS IS REAL HIP HOP! Jean Grae is the TRUTH ! The JOINT ! The BOMB! Lyrically, she can put 90 percent of todays MC (Male and especially Female) out of business. In the class of MC Lyte (GOAT), Bahamadia, L-Boogie (Lauryn), Latifah, Salt N Pepa, Heather B, Hurricane G, and Monie Love, Jean Grae has gone over and is now officially a member of the TRUE FEMALE MC SORORITY. These are female MC's that truly hold it down. The ladies in the game now....DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. Pick up this CD and any project she's involved in. But remember....If you like RAP MUSIC instead of HIP HOP then....It's probably not for you.

5 out of 5 stars This girl is sickening!!!!.......2006-09-22

First off let me tell you...this girl's flow is sickening!! She can spit better than all female rappers and most male rappers. I just happened to purchase her album "Bootleg" and was blown away! After that I immediately purchased all of her albums. She is what the industry needs and it is a shame they don't give rappers with "true talent" a chance. I pity anyone who doesn't listen to her. All her songs flows like poetry and she can spit stories just like NAS, and there is nothing "bubblegum" about her. While other female rappers are cute to listen to...you have to take Jean seriously when you listen. She is just fly... I respect her because she did not convert to the average hoochie mama rapping about jewelry and cars female rappers out there. They are cookie cutouts of each other. She stands alone. I could go on and on about her...but you have to listen for yourself! Go and get her albums, you will be blown away.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2003-08-07

This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20

Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

2 out of 5 stars good, if you like radio alt. rock like weezer and greenday.......2005-05-06

but just not that interesting, theres just nothing new here. They pretty much sound like a generic weezer, I really think thats the only way to describe them. But hey if you cant get enough of weezer and you need something to fill the gaps between album releases, then by all means pick up this generic masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Green Day, Foo Fighters and most of all Weezer..........2004-11-29

This is a very good alt/rock band from Kansas. I hear Green Day,Foo Fighters and most of all Weezer.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Biased..........2004-05-07

Maybe I'm biased, having grown up in Manhattan, KS, where everybody at the highschool wears UFB shirts, and the local bands cover their songs endlessly. Still, "This Will Be Laughing Week" is the best from this power trio.

Anyone interested in Ultimate Fakebook might like Nada Surf or other Manhattan bands, like Podstar or Addictive Behavior.

5 out of 5 stars From The Beginning.......2003-04-01

Years ago, while at a concert, I received a demo CD from Ultimate Fakebook. After the concert I got into my car and popped the CD in. I was rather impressed, and now, years later, it's a shame to see that UFB aren't bigger than they are. In fact, to this day I cannot find their CD's in any stores in my area. I had to buy them off the internet. After receiving this particular CD, I let a few people hear it and they were also impressed. "Who are they?", they ask. I'm instantly reminded that the music industry isn't always the best at making GOOD music known. I've heard UFB compared to such bands as Taking Back Sunday, Saves The Day, and OK Go. If you like that kind of music, you'll definitely want to own This Will Be Laughing Week.

5 out of 5 stars whats the max # of stars...........2002-09-29

I've had this CD for over a year now and all I can say is that it straight rocks. The word around my High school is "epic." And I can't think of anything more appropriate. For 13 powerful anthems this album is epic. (perfect hair is an average song). The CD is of the rare type (a la Green Day's Dookie) where you are genuinly excited to hear every song, from the faster stuff (Little Apple Girl) to the slow stuff (A Million Hearts and the excellent Of Course We Will). I recomend this CD to fans of punk, fans of rock, fans of pop, and fans of just dang good music.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-15

Perfection in delivery and hauntingly beautiful tone quality mark this performance of some glorious holy week music. The Choir of King's College is made up of approximately 30 members, 16 are the young boy choristers and 14 are the undergraduates, who are referred to as Scholars. This particular disc shows 2 different recording times:The Tallis selections comprising the first half of the record were recorded in 1981; the second half (of varied composers )was recorded in 1977. So we cannot be sure that all the personnel were the same, not that it really matters, because it is all so very excellent. HOwever, I think that the Tallis half sounds like only the Scholars were singing, because there are no boy sopranos, as in the 2nd half. Be that as it may, I'll comment on just a few of the works that I particularly enjoyed.
ALL OF THE TALLIS: "The Lamentations of Jeremiah" are usually transmitted as a single piece in most contemporary manuscripts, but they are really two separate compositions in different modes. Tallis and his contemporary John Sheppard were the only 2 English composers of the time to compose hymn settings of any quality. It has been suggested that they had it in mind to compose a cycle of settings for Mary Tudor's chapel. "O Nata lux" may belong to this Marian set. It is almost entirely homophonic, and relies rhetorically upon a flexible declamatory style. " Salvator Mundi" is one of Tallis's best-known motets. The masterly treatment of imitative writing is combined with a fine sense of structure and balance, achieved through repetition, to give a sense of large-scale design, a feature characteristic of Tallis's best large-scale compositions. And the most beautiful anthem on the disc: Tallis's "If Ye Love Me".
So much wonderful music, exquisitely sung; a delcious Easter treat!
I would like to mention to any Michael Chance fans who read this, he is definitely singing on this recording. In the first half it is very obvious, but I do think he is also on the 2nd half. He would have been with King's at this time. Just some trivia for those who are interested.

4 out of 5 stars What you would expect from Kings.......2005-03-23

This is a good recording--you wouldn't expect anything else from this choir. They just sing really well. Diction, tone, everything. Just great performance.

I disagree, as I usually do with Kings, with some of the repertoire selected. The Tallis Lamentations at the beginnning are sung well, but, quite honestly, I usually skip them because they're boring and I want to listen to a variety of pieces on the recording. The Lotti and Sheppard are also disastrous, not because of the performance, just because, in my opinion, they are disastrous as music anyway.

The hymns are probably the best music on this recording. They exemplify the true passion of the season. The other motets (besides the Lamentations) by Tallis are excellent. Leighton's "Let all the world", while I hate singing it, is an effective way to close the recording.

Overall, a good addition to your music library, but not a necessary one.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely til the end........2004-03-13

The music on this cd brings home the beauty of the loftiest, most beautiful cathedrals of Europe, and is fitting of the subject matter therein: the death and resurection of Christ. The only thing I have to complain about is the last selection. TERRIBLE! Forgive me, but I tried to listen to it with open mind and open heart... but everytime, the word terrible came to mind. I would try to keep my twitching fingers away from the skip buttom; but again, every time, I found my arm going straight for it. The last selection sounds like a horrible, tragicly corny and rediculous church-circus joke. The rest of the cd is gorgious. I'm just not into that new-age sound-- or whatever it's supposed to be. Did I mention that the last selection on this cd is repulsive? If I didn't, well, let me say that it stinks!!! Buy the cd anyway, and do like I do and skip the last selection... unless of course you have found a way to tollerate it.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage King's!.......2001-10-30

Superb ensemble singing from simply one of the finest choirs in the world. Philip Ledger's tenure at king's was relatively short but he produced a sublime sound from the choir. Then are many jewels on this disc from Lotti's 'Crucifixus' to the simply beautiful interpretation of Orlando Gibbon's 'Drop, drop slow tears'
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars King's College Choir Proves Its Mastery Again.......2001-03-20

I have been extremely hungry to hear English Tudor composers lately and came across this CD. Since it contained works by Tallis, Morley, Gibbons, Taverner and Sheppard, was sung by my favorite choir, and was very reasonably priced, I figured I had nothing to lose. Everything else on the disc was frosting on the cake.

I am especially delighted with the attention to program on this CD. From following Tallis's lavishly dense "Lamentations" with his thrillingly sparse "O Nata Lux" (full of tasty cross relations), to following Taverner's "Dum transisset Sabbatum I" with the well known Easter hymn, "Jesus Christ is risen today," careful attention is given to pacing and contrast over the generous 73 min 18 sec of the recording.

If I were to select two items worthy of special note, I'd point you to Lotti's "Crucifixus" and Kenneth Leighton's "Let all the world in every corner sing." The first is certainly the most exquisite use of dissonance I've ever heard in a Baroque choral work. Burney records in his 1770 diaries that the Italian choir brought him to tears when it nailed the entries on dissonant suspensions, and this recording shows you exactly what he was talking about. In the context of this program, Leighton's anthem is also a thrilling piece of work. Though decidedly modern, it uses modern organ and choral writing to the service of the text. Never do I pull back and think, "Is this weirdness for weirdness' sake?" -- as I do when listening to the works of many moderns, and Gesualdo, for that matter. It is a thrilling ride on the crest of a wave of sound that brings the entire program of King's College Choir's "Music for Holy Week" to an exhilarating conclusion. (I don't know any other work by him. Surely this isn't unique in his catalog.)

5 out of 5 stars "Broadway Shows from the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-23

Percy Faith blends two award winning Broadway Shows together "Subways Are For Sleeping" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 8533 in 1961) and "Do I Hear A Waltz?" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9117 in 1965), following the formula of previous albums from the vault of rare finds ~ two more winners are under the baton of the Maestro.

First twelve tracks "Subways Are For Sleeping", featuring the songs of Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne with outstanding arrangements on very catchy tunes ~ like "BE A SANTA", "COMES ONCE IN A LIFETIME", "GETTING MARRIED", "HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE A FACE?", "I JUST CAN'T WAIT", "I SAID IT AND I'M GLAD", "I'M JUST TAKING MY TIME", "NOW I HAVE SOMEONE", "RIDE THROUGH THE NIGHT", "WHAT IS THIS FEELING IN THE AIR?", "WHEN YOU HELP A FRIEND OUT" and "WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN?", all have the hallmark sound and the authentic "Percy Faith Touch" on every selections.

Second twelve tracks ~ "Do I Hear A Waltz", featuring the tunes of Richard Rodgers and Stephen Soundheim enhanced by the performances of arranger/conductor Percy Faith and his Orchestra ~ "A PERFECTLY LOVELY COUPLE", "DO I HEAR A WALTZ?", "HERE WE ARE AGAIN", "MOON IN MY WINDOW", "NO UNDERSTAND", "SOMEONE LIKE YOU", "STAY", "TAKE THE MOMENT", "THANK YOU SO MUCH", "THINKING", "THIS WEEK AMERICANS" and "WE'RE GONNA BE ALL RIGHT", enamored to the luxurious sound of Faith's string arrangements ~ you're immediately hooked on these tracks ~ marvelous performances enthralling listener's for some fifty years.

The people at Collectables should be commended for bringing back some of Maestro Faith's best works on compact disc ~ there is so much more in the vast vaults, hopefully there will be more to follow...gotta love it!

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-01-02

Energy, ambition, faith, and talent abound in this first CD by Stephanie. Obviously written at a young age, this CD delivers vision and optimism, as well as beautiful melodies, ocassional cheesy lyrics (i.e. I'll Choose You), and tricky rhythms (i.e. It's About Time). Transcendent of it's possible genre definitions, the country-folk-pop style of Stephanie's music is VERY cool.

    Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Such a great songwriter..........2005-06-30

Wow! I can't say enough about how great a talent Stephanie is! I actually have not listened to her first CD, but I have her second album Change, and I've been listening to it non stop. I will be sure to grab up this one also. She definitely deserves to be more well known. If you want a pop album with catchy music and real feeling in the lyrics, check Stephanie out.

5 out of 5 stars As good as any big-name pop/folk/country star around.......2004-06-21

I don't know why this artist is not bigger than she is. Her songwriting and performance is top-notch. I'm not a big folk or country music fan, but I thoroughly enjoy listening to her fresh music. I hope more people can discover it.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!!!!.......2002-06-19
