Absolutely fantastic.......2007-02-17

This is one of the greatest honkytonk CDs I've ever heard. When I first heard "Thinkin' Problem" on the radio in 1994, I instantly knew I had to have this CD. There's not a bad song in the bunch, from the rocking honkytonk songs to the ballads, especially the heartbreaking "12-12-84." I can't praise this CD enough; it's real, hard-core, twangy country.

Songs that never get old...........2007-01-18

If you need a reason to sing along in the shower, sing while you drive to Vegas or sing while you work out on the treadmill, this CD is it! The lyrics to "Look What Followed Me Home", "Honky Tonk Healin", "Down at the Bottom of a Broken Heart", and of course, "Thinkin Problem," are fun to mimic and the beat easily gives a skip to your step. This guy was the best kept secret in the 90's and the music will never get old.

This is real drinking music. Songs like "Look what followed me home" or "Thinking problem" are almost pure honky-tonk. This cd is the real stuff.

I bought this used on Amazon for $0.99. I had never heard of David Ball before, but now, I want all his recordings! If you like George, Merle, Lefty, Keith Whitley, or Dwight, then this is YOUR kind of music and you are SURE to like David Ball! There is not one single cut on this cd which I skip over! Slow, fast, in between... you won't want to miss any. I gave it 5 stars only because I couldn't give it ten. Buy it! There is no question that you'll be glad you did!

Very smooth and mellow...........2003-09-14

Every one of the songs on this album is classic honky tonk and will have you sitting listening for hours. I especially love "When the Thought of You Catches Up to Me" and "Thinkin' Problem". But I also love "12-12-84"...oh, ok, I love them all. David Ball's voice reaches a depth within that keeps me wanting more!!

This is terrible. Especially the track where he modifies his voice to resemble an entire boys choir. Pure music torture. And he was so good in back the future!

Interesting.......2005-10-01

This is not your everyday run of the mill CD. In fact to some they may not like it the first time you hear it (or at all) but this will grow on you. I found myself thinking about some of these songs and sometimes singing (too myself of course) while I'm at work or sitting around. This CD is actually pretty good and I definately recommend it to Crispin Glover fans. The remake of "These Boots" makes this worth buying alone, the best remake of the song ever. In my opinion it's alot better than the original.

I've listened to this cd approximately four times since I came home to find it waiting for me this evening. I'm still not any closer to understanding just what the hell Crispin's deal is, and I've probably done irreparable damage to my sanity, but I don't really care. If, like me, you really enjoy hearing the undeniably weird Crispin Hellion Glover reciting lines like "Only yesterday I had a lamb's skin removed" in his strange, oddly sweet voice over merry, almost pastoral music, get this album. Get it now. If, however, you don't go in for that sort of insanity, shun this album like it's the plague.

This album broke my psyche. I felt it shatter. I did. -nod-

"F*cked up" doesn't even begin to cover it. This is forty three minutes of pure, unadulterated insanity. There's no reference I could come up with that could possibly prepare you for this album. Not one.

Now, I have seen and heard a lot of disturbing things in my life, but this *has* to have wormed its way to the top of the list.

Yeah, definitely recommended. I can't say I'll listen to this often, but it'll certainly have its place in my collection and I will sure as hell be burning it for all my friends. :)

Oh my god........2005-01-05

Let it be known now, to those that don't know already, that Crispin Glover is insane. He's a god damn freak that outdoes anyone else I can think of. Yet I love him. We all love him. And I finally purchased his album. In all honesty, there's no way I can describe what's on this sucker in full. To save you time though, if you already have any of Crispin's books, or have seen his work in Bartleby and Rubin & Ed, go ahead and purchase this. In fact, you'll really appreciate a track on here if you've seen the latter. But I'm not going to get into "artistic meaning" or anything like that here. I'm a Crispin-fan through and through. While I do apprecite his work and take most of his things seriously, I know when to laugh, and some tracks on this album are here for that. And yes, there is a meaning to the album in general, but you know what? You can just call the number on the cd itself and ask whoever answers to get it. I'm not trying to be mysterious, but it's nice to find out for yourself to get the whole story as to what the big problem really is.

After the grand Overture, we have Selected Readings From Rat Catching, Crispin's first published book. And boy is it really "selected". Do yourself a favor and don't try to follow along while reading your own copy of the book. He jumps around all over the place, but it's still good. Crispin sounds incredibly happy during some readings, and just plain freaky (wait until you hear him say "chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiickeeeeeeeeen"). The music playing in the background is equally happy, and puts me in a good mood. Next, he sings being clean in The New Clean Song. It's a nice acoustic ditty where the lyrics say it all. Crispin sounds like he's enjoying himself on this track, but not as much as he probably is on Auto-Manipulator. A song about nothing but masturbation. At first, I couldn't stand this track, but I loved it after just a second listen. There's some weird vocal effects going on (that I can magically match when I sing along) which make it even more hilarious. Here's a few quick lyrics to give you a sample:

"I'M AN AU...TO...MANI-PU-LATOR. I PLAY WITH MYSELF...I'M A MASTURBATOR." [later in the song] "I close the bathroom door, I be lookin' so cool, my mama don't know I been touchin' my tool"

See? If anything, it's a demi-hip hop track that you'll have to hear for yourself. Up next is the track no one can resist mentioning: Clowny Clown Clown. Demented circus music is what's on this one. The lyrics are silly as well, but sort of depressing in what happens to the clown. Like I mentioned earlier, there's a small Rubin & Ed bit here, and if you're lucky enough to find the music video, you'll see even more. Speaking of that video, if you need it, email me right away. But yes, this is a happy song that everyone loves, and I've yet to get sick of hearing it. With Getting Out Of Bed, we get an eerie glimpse at what Crispin must think when he does get out of bed. And lordy, I don't wanna be around when he does if this is what it is. Next is a personal favorite of mine- The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze. It's so graceful and classy, yet touching. I love the music again, and the way Cripin sings a few lines is really devious. The last song on here is a Charles Manson cover: Never Say "Never" To Always. If it didn't make you think before, it definately will this time around, I'll leave it at that.

Finally are the Selected Readings From Oak-Mot. Again, don't try to follow along with your book of the same name. I just tried, and things were way off. Crispin would say "chapter ten", but it'd be a completely different chapter, and I'd just give up. But really, you should listen to these before reading Oak-Mot if you can, and memorize the way he reads them and the music that plays as well. It adds even more effect, and now I can enjoy Oak-Mot the way it was most likely intended. And finally [part II], the last track is Crispin freaking out in German sort of like how he did in a dream-scene from Bartleby. Someone online was kind enough to translate most of what he's saying, so again, just ask me if you'd like the info.

In the end, I take this album to heart. It's one of my favorites I own, and listen to it religiously. Even the title: The Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution. The Solution = Let It Be has a lot of meaning to me. Whenever you're stressing out, think about the title and you'll feel normal. Well, as normal as you can get after listening to this.

Crispin, thank you for making this beauty. I look forward to The Big Love, whenever it comes out.

Looking for "different." Look no further!.......2006-01-14

I have this CD and Can a Cherry Pie wave goodbye for my 3 1/2 and 15 month old and we LOVE it. The instructions are clear and gives the children enough time to move to the action. They have learned so much and are having so much fun while learning. Sometimes, I will pause the cd to give them time to answer. We do not listen to the cd from front to back, but I select 2-4 songs to listen to a program them into the cd player so that the kids don't get bored of it. The music is great (no rock or rap that preschoolers and toddlers cannot understand), but not your average Toddler CD.
We Love the title song as it teaches early phonics and recognizing that words start with a letter. I don't turn to the CD to teach my kids everything, but use it as a supplement to my teaching.

disappointed.......2005-08-28

I was looking for music that will help my students learn the sounds of the alphabet but to my disappointment there was none included in the album. Anyway, I said it was ok cause because it teaches about other things too like shapes, letters etc. But I was just not inspired by the music. It was not as lively as I expected and it sounded like country music to me. I know the type of songs that will really get my kids excited and this is just not it.

These aren't your run-of-the-mill songs!.......2005-04-12

I am always looking for innovative Childrens Music CD's and I was excited to fall upon this real gem. As you can tell from the title, Hap Palmer has a great sense of humor and imagination. I like music CDs that don't have the same ol' kid songs that we all know and have heard again and again. Instead, I like exposing my children to a lot of fun new songs. Not only are they more interesting to listen to, but I love to see how fast their great little memories can learn these new songs. You get everything in this CD! Part of the songs are pure fun and the other part mix fun with learning.

Some of the great fun songs include the title song "Can a Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet," "What Could a Bean Bag Be," and "The Compost Bin." His learning songs teach shapes, sound blends, and rhyming. I love "Letters in the Blender" and "Fun with The Rhyme Time Band" as well as "Jig Along Shapes" and "Action Fraction."

As you can see from reading the titles, these aren't your run-of-the-mill songs. Hap Palmer has a great talent at creating songs that are interesting to listen to and fun to dance with. Highly Awarded Early Childhood Music Pioneer.......2004-01-11

Hap Palmer has been honored with many awards for his music for young children. He is a pioneer of pairing movement and music, and integrating basic educational ideas into music. His music interests me as a parent.

So my family and I have made a point of listening to his music, mostly by loan through our local library. Unfortunately, we do not like his musical style or voice very much. Most of his albums are not singable or melodic. I praise Palmer for making music that is good for childen and not like most commercial "junk food" children's music products that are on the market, but we just don't like most of his songs.

"Can a Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet" is one of the exceptions. The songs are interesting and fun to listen to. We like this CD. Plus, the messages are good for children, like most Hap Palmer albums. Thumbs up!

RECOMMENDATION: I suggest that parents start with CD's by Raffi. Then consider this CD. Hap Palmer's music is especially valuable if you use it to interact with your child, such as moving and thinking. Palmer's music is quality.

Can A Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet?.......2001-01-25

I am a volunteer storyteller for two year olds at the local library. After story time we danced to "Everybody Dance" and "The Bean Bag". The children and the parents were so excited when we finished that they broke out in cheers! I'm ordering my own copy of this CD today and so are a half dozen other parents and caregivers!

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Quality of Life.......2006-10-29

You run into this neighborhood character on the street and ask, "How's it going," and he always has a story. Hip, slick and entertaining, he's a big part of the neighborhood's personality. It's no wonder Dr. Duke Tumatoe is a beloved radio personality in the Wheat Belt. The band ... wowsa ... they prove they can play blues, jazz, swing and rock with the best, they prove it in brief, perfect passages and then get back to the story, which is that neighborhood character's story of the moment. Really cool stuff.

I'll admit that I felt somewhat skeptical about the release of this album when I initially heard of its release. Could it be Don Cab without the original members all present? Was it blatant cashing in on the band's history? Does Damon Che actually possess eight arms? Happily: yes; no; jury still out, respectively. I enjoy the abum, the protean elements that comprise both Don Cab and Creta Bourzia are all present and form a rather tight straightforward unit more reminiscent of For respect..., rather than II, in my humble opinion. Opening salvo "MMMM, acting" is arresting, its three distinct movements mapping out what this iteration of the Don is capable of. "Lowered the twin", "Palm trees", and the title track are all excellent additions to the Don Cab canon, sleek and relentless, but" Savage Composition" is by far the centerpiece of the album, epic without being overbearing, and closest to the spirit of previous efforts. The rest of the album is average, and could possibly have done with some editing, But "bozzo jazz" is a wonderful closer, spacey freak out rockiness abound. The best part of the ensemble Is Che's skinwork, of course, and the way the drums were recorded only enhances this: dry and very clean, almost jazz like in its economy. So, buy it and enjoy it for what it is, and I think we'll see something more expansive from this unit once they really have some time to progress. Embrace the prog, people!

excellent for most, average for don cab.......2006-06-15

I am going to avoid discussing my dismay over the lineup change or other 'politic' formalities regarding this album (The new players seem to attempt a kind of replicated sound of the old players. I miss the old players). I am just going to say that, although this album is very good by anyone's standards, it is not the leap into new brain-bending territory that all prior Don Caballero albums have been (From II on, anyhow). In fact, it seems like an attempt to summarize all of the basic functions of the earlier don cab; to distill the unique qualities of each album into one. It does this without charting new territory at all. This does not make it a bad album at all, but I personally was just a tiny little bit disappointed that they didn't make another album that I would want to listen to for months on end. Their last two albums, What Burns and especially American Don, made all other music seem obsolete and sophomoric, in a way. After those albums, this one was downright predictable. On the other hand, If you found American Don and/or What Burns to be a little too out there, but you really love II, then you will thoroughly enjoy this album because it contains the most straight up "rocking out" that Don Cab has come up with since II.

I think it's total b.s. for them to use the don cab name when the drummer is the only remaining member. Some of the music's pleasant, some of it isn't. None of it is anything original or progressive. The majority of it is loose and abrasive, reminding me more of Oxes or Don Cab's 2 than either of Don Cab's last two albums, although there are a couple of points where they achieve some melodic intricacy comparable to American Don, those being the highlights for me. At some points it's impressive how the Creta Bourzia guys replicate some of the more subtle details of the former Don Cab's playing techniques, but on the other hand it's kinda pathetic that they want to do that. Overall i think this album is tarnishing Don Cab's good name with inferior compositonal focus, and creating the annoyance of having to add "but not that new album" when you say you're a fan of the band.

Apparently Damon Che IS Don Caballero.......2006-05-24

I don't know whether you call me a true Don Caballero fan or not. I own most of the albums, but I've only seen them live once. It might have mattered that Damon Che was the only continuing member, if this new album was no good -- but it is one the best Caballero albums period!! It's tight, muscular... and Damon is an avalanche on the drums. I absolutley cannot wait to seem them perform this material live! Every Caballero album has a different feel to it. As far as I am concerned this is one of the most accessible, and it still clearly employs the Don Caballero technique.

Excellent CD.......2006-05-24

For the readers of this review, I only own "For Respect", and "Don Cab 2," so my scope of the Don Cab collection is somewhat limited. All that aside I really enjoyed this CD. I'm not a big fan of "Math Rock," (It is somewhat monotonous and annoying, but that is my limited opinion.) Gone from this CD are the one note screeches and discordant "melodies" of Don cab 2 (I could only stand to listen to songs 1, 3, the first half of 4 and 8 on that album.) WCLP is more melodic and cohesive, however it still has some of the old Don Cab sensibilities. This is one of the few albums that I listened to all the way through and then listened to again. I would recommend this to any instrumental music lover, however it may turn off the true Don Cab fan. And that is my one and a half cents.

Took me back.......2007-01-06

I remember eagerly staying awake for the premier of this series when I was nine and being glued to the screen. This CD awoke lots of memories, all of them good. It's got me humming the old tunes all over again.

The CD took a small hit in my view as I actually prefer the original version of the opening them to the slightly different arrangement found here, but the rest of the tracks are more than fine. If you at all like the original version of Galactica, I think you would find it hard to go wrong with this.

Great Score, But Bad Remaster.......2005-09-02

I would give 5 stars for excellent music, but have to give only 3 stars for a terrible remaster. It sounds like someone turned the Treble all the way up and turned the Bass down to zero! It has a very thin, metalic sound to it. Also, the reverb is way over done, as the other reviewers have mentioned. It's to the point where things are so blended together that you can't distinguish the individual instruments. My original vinyl record is better sound quality then this (if you overlook the clicks or pops). I would recommend the June 29, 1999 re-recording with Stu and the Royal Orchestra over this one. On the re-recording the horns blast through loud and clear and the bass blows you out of your seat. You can hear every instrument very clearly as if you are sitting right in front of the orchestra. The music is fantastic and I think the Battlestar Galactica theme is one of the best ever written. Also, the Exploration theme and Base Star (Imperious Leader) theme are amazing.

It's strange-- just a few days ago, I was rifing through some old stuff from my childhood (old toys, a pile of very old Starlog Magazines)and noticed an ad in a Starlog for this in its old LP format, back when the show was actually on-air. I remember being a little kid and wishing I could send in for it.

Well, fast forward to yesterday, and I'm rifing through various cd soundtracks in my local cd/dvd wherehouse/bonanza/free-for-all store, and there it was. And by God, it was in cd format! And yes, it was ORIGINAL! Not re-performed by some Scottish Orchestra a couple of years ago! Immediately, it was in my greedy hands, helplessly going along with me to my home.

First off, this cd has liner notes. It's not just flimsy repros of the front and back of the old LP. Glen Larson, Stu Phillips, and Richard Hatch all pitch in with recollections about the show, with Phillips's being the most memorable (John Williams coming by to listen to the theme to see if any Star Wars was in there, in case Lucasfilm wanted to sue).

The sound quality is great, no hiss or tininess. The only gripe I have is that the strings sound a little too "smooth." Don't know if that makes sense, but they sound a little too reverbed, concert-hallish. But hey, if that's all I can come up with to complain, then this is a winner!

Some people may think of Battlestar Galactica as a hokey show that sums up the era of disco, I don't happen to be one of them however!

One thing most people can agree on whether they be a fan or not, is that the theme to Battlestar Galactica is one of the most memorable of TV themes!

Here you get the pieces that went with the first episode that was broadcast - Saga of a Star World, but many of the themes pop up again further along in the series.

The score is a big score for TV, played by the LA Philharmonic no less, and in my humble opinion, composer Stu Phillips's finest work.

Good soundtrack.......2004-08-10

If I was asked who has the best soundtrack,Galactica or Star Wars,it would be a tie.I especially like the track Red Nova on the Galactica soundtrack.I listen to samples of the new Galactica soundtrack and so far so good.There is a question being asked about the rivalry between the two sci-fi epics of Galactica and Star Wars.When it comes to the music,both are good.Now if George Lucas could come up with better material of what he used in the Phantom Menance and Attack of the Clones and The space battles between the Colinial Empire and the Cylons increases in the future episodes.

If you like this band, try Winnebago Deal. The 2 Bens that make up this extremely lively Oxford band are currently working with Nick on the next phase of MG, and they are brilliant, especially live. Well worth a look

The review that never existed.............2005-04-20

From punk rock to metal, from hard hit acoustic stories to bass maneuverability. Just the blueprint of Nick Oliveri shows a strategic design for the traits above. His bald head for less air resistance on fast paced slammers and agility. The gangling facial hair to show wisdom of such folk tales as 'All I Can Do". Yes, if Nick Oliveri was a car, I'd feel safe enough to left my girlfriend ride him....not really. Drug problem.. as an album has very few if no problems, they do not exist. Each song has its own flavor but as a whole blends in perfectly together. This is not a bag of M&Ms where each one if a different color but all taste the same. No no, this album is a 4 course meal. Each riff and each moment is different than the rest. It has looooooonggevity and the dexterity to affect you at any point in your life. I dont want to single out any songs as they all have a reason, point, flavor, and are all needed to make such a album. Great albums are the ones you cant just pick out peices, it's immpossible. Dont buy this looking for a Queens, Dwarves, Kyuss, or River Side Rapist (or is he in the bulimics?) album. Look for traits and aspects you love of those bands and you'll find them here along with much more. The most amazing trait about Nick is the ability to not be the same musician band to band to band. The most amazing part about Nick, is now this album.

give me a hit, one or two.......2003-09-16

I saw Mondo Generator opening up for the Melvins and Tomahawk. The show itself was one of the best rock n' roll nights of my life and Mondo Generator (the opening act) blew away the Melvins and Tomahawk. They performed a few cuts off of Cocaine Rodeo and then teased us with a few cuts from "A Drug Problem that Never Existed."
Now this is rock n' roll. Short, dirty, mean, with soul and LOUD. Nick's voice is in top form, Brant Bjork (another Kyuss veteran) is a brilliant drummer and Molly and Dave from Earthlings are a fierce rock duo. Dave Catching looks like he's eighty but man can he wail. Live he just pounds and caresses the sickest sounding riffs out of his Strat and struts around like the rock god he is. Molly has got to be a wild sex kitten, with her hands squeezing the neck of her bass and the short nurses outfit she'll have your tongue on the floor.
The highlights on this record are "Meth I Hear You Callin'" "So High, So Low" "Do the Headright" "All I Can Do" "F.Y. I'm Free" "Day I Die" and the epic "Four Corners."
On this record, Mondo Generator have given you the sonic equivalent of being strung out and sick. Its all here from the ecstasy, to the nausea, to the violent comedown. This is twisted , genuine music from a new scene of rock n' roll innovators. Buy it. While you're at it, get a t-shirt.

perfect music.......2007-07-16

Ok, I've been listening to this album for a while now, and I can honestly say this is the best album I've ever heard. The funny thing is I didn't know it at first. I started off only liking a few tracks and skipping the rest. But over time it grew on me. I gradually started liking more and more tracks until finally I liked all 14. That's when I realized what a masterpiece this album actually is. It's perfect music. Joey Cape is a musical genius. He has such a sense of melody, I don't think he could make a bad song if he tried(props to the rest of the band too). I can tell it took him many years of songwriting and singing experience to get to this point. I've listened closely to the lyrics and tried to figure out what the songs are about, but for most of them it's really hard to tell. Seems like Joey has a clever formula for writing that allows the songs' meanings to stay hidden, while still giving you a general idea. That's a good thing, though. There's a wide range of sounds and styles on the album, no two songs sound alike, but it all fits together nicely. Lyrics are included inside, as well as some cool pictures.

No matter what I say here, it won't justify how good this album is. There are no words to describe it that will do it justice. Just buy it. Hopefully you will like it as much as I do.

An amazing alternative!.......2006-05-24

My feelings of this album range from enthusiastic to melancholy. Months ago I came across these guys and after a few days of this album, "Houston: We Have a Drinking Problem", by Bad Astronaut, I must confess that these add yet another character to rock. These guys simply rock! There's no reason that this band, in its current musical trend, should never reach stardom.

If you think back on all of the greatest rock band's albums, and recall a certain buzz, then this album will hold your ears in suspense and a need for more. The lyrics are superbly written with vocabulary that only enhances the emotional attachment felt through this album in its entirety. When you hear "Traveling by stereo its suspension time in space. Your best, your worst, as you journey through the system you define body and mind.", then lead off into a casual frustration of old rock progressions while finalizing with a great conclusion with class and creativity, you'll realize that Bad Astronaut is something worth more than listening to. It's worth understanding.

If you really enjoy that raw rock sound, "Houston: We Have a Drinking Problem", by Bad Astronaut, is a great buy.

Houston, We Have A Record Review.......2005-08-29

You are reading reviews for this record, no doubt, for one of two reasons: Either you've come across this band through indie torrent searching, or you're a fan of Lagwagon and Joey Cape. To this knowledge, there are a few things any listener of these CDs should be aware of.

Bad Astronaut, due to the creation of writer/singer Joey Cape, has been labeled by many as a genre of punk. Admittedly, when you spin back towards Acrophobe, the distinctions are considerably more blurred. However, I cannot possibly categorize Houston... as a punk CD.

This is the unfortunate fault of many people who buy these CDs. Most of them have expected a CD on par with Lagwagon, and this is simply not the case. The music is not so similar(unless, as I mentioned, you're listening to Acrophobe, which shares much more in common with Lagwagon than Houston does). As poor David Hyatt is concerned, this CD isn't "Punk" enough for good ol' Joey Cape. The flaw in reasoning is at once understandable, due to categorization, but also poorly thought out.

The first thing you should note about Houston... is the slow progression of the opening track, These Days, which is a dead giveaway to the nature of this CD. The CD itself flows in a slower, conceptual way, dropping the speed and breakdowns of Lagwagon. If anything, Bad Astronaut has created a CD that flows into a vein of music that defines generalization. As so far, I have yet to hear a band that sounds even remotely similar.

I disagree with David, who seems to believe that the lyrics to Houston... are not as impressive as Lagwagon lyrics. Personally, I've always found Lagwagon to fall short in their lyrical content, mostly because Joey Cape's inability to direct an idea in his lyrics consistently. What's impressive, to me, about Houston... is the advancement of the lyrics, and their scope and nature. If you listen to this CD, it becomes apparent that there's a story here. If nothing else, this CD is just as the name suggests: the life of a drinker and a mover.

The CD is not without it's dead points, personally I cannot usually listen to Solar Sister or If I Had a Son, as they typically bore me to death. Though, the rest of the tracks on the CD more than make up for the two points I consider to be weak. And sure, there are a few spots where the lyrics get a little bit silly(Not a Dull Moment), but even those can be overlooked.

I believe that Bad Astronaut is truly the side of Joey Cape that's been trying to get out. As if his acoustic split with Tony Sly wasn't proof of this fact, it just seems to me that without spending so much time away from Lagwagon, he would've never come to realize a CD as broad and amazing as this. It shows maturity in bounds and leaps over the same tried-and-true formula that Lagwagon is famous for. Really, isn't this what music is about? Maturity? Growing up and experimenting?

This CD is an amazing testament to how complex any one person can be, showing that even the hardest rockers can expel their shell for something a bit more modest. I believe Joey Cape has done a great job with this CD, as well as the entire band as a whole(rest in peace Derrick Plourde). Perhaps the only true issue I have with this CD is the volume it was recorded at, which has the tendency to make even the kindest and smoothest speakers crackle a bit here and there, but overall, the production value is superb.

If there were ever a category for Bad Astronaut, I would list it as something around a Pop Funk Emo. But let's hope it never comes to that, because categorizing music makes it less individualistic, and Bad Astronaut is certainly it's own individual in the music industry.

spectacular.......2005-02-16

this is probly the best band i have listend to since weezer.

I love all music, seriosly. I think this band (primarily this cd) is perfect in all aspects. Listen to "disarm" and "another dead romance" and you hear what im trying to say. With tempo changes, heavy guitar, acoustics, piano, the band takes bits and peices from all styles of music, and surgicly combines them to create thier product.

If you like rock, any kind of rock, youll love this CD.
