Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Mystic is the one folks have been waiting for. The Bay Area singer/rapper exudes the kind of bona fide b-girl bravado that, underneath their macho posturing, very few male MCs can match. Not a holier-than-thou granola dreamer, Mystic is a rhyme rebel who assesses harsh realities unflinchingly, with nerve and tenderness at the same time. She's a skilled MC, as evidenced by the intricate wordplay and cadences that she showcases on hardcore cautionary tales such as "The Gottas." She's also a great singer, with a smoky alto that captures lovesickness on "You Say, I Say." Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom is low-key and lush, with production by Left Coast luminaries such as the Angel and A-Plus. This album is b-womanhood at its best. --Lizz Mendez Berry

Beautiful lyrics, sad, moving, sexy, edgy. Perfect, really.

4 out of 5 stars Mystic - Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom.......2007-02-19

Mystic's debut album "Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom" (2001) is an impressive not to be slept on release. Mystic is a female Rapper/Singer hailing from Oakland, California. Mystic reminds me of other talented female MC's like Lauryn Hill & Jean Grae. Mystic keeps her audience listening throughout from the laidback intro to the closing bonus cut "Destiny Complete this is an MC who has deep and relevant music to deliver. Over some ominous sounding production Mystic drops thoughts on corruption and the ghetto environment many people live in. My favourite track on this release is "Neptune's Jewels, Mystic delivers a refreshing love ballad, with on point rhymes and soulful singing. On "The Gotta's" Mystic paint's a picture of a young street soldier and the life he lives, in pursuit of money, sex, love and respect. The following track is the upbeat "The Life", Mystic sings soulfully providing another memorable joint. Mystic flips the script on "Once A Week", being the women who's looking for a casual relationship no strings attached. Mystic slows things down with another love ballad in "Forever and A Day", while taking the perspective of a hustler/killer on "D Boy". "You Say, I Say" is another track about relationship's. Throughout this album Mystic delivers deep track's, "A Dream" is one of these, Mystic's lyrics/singing are outstanding on this sad cut about struggle and overcoming. Mystic collaborates with Planet Asia for "W", in a track about their home state California. Powerful is the best way to describe "Fallen Angel's", a track about death dedicated to those who have lost people to violence, domestic abuse, drugs and murder. Mystic talks to the women who find love in the wrong places on "Girlfriend Sistagirl". Mystic reflects on her life, getting raped, remembering her drug addict father who abandoned her on "Fatherless Child", nothing's simple in this track about love and pain. Mystic talk's to people who have suffered in life on "O.K. Alright", while dropping some introspective words's on "Spoken Words". Mystic provides conscious and quality music on "Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom" a album which I recommend checking out. I think women will especially enjoy/relate to this release.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2005-10-20

In a Hiphop context there are few female MCs that can truly be considered 'nice' in comparison their male counterparts but by leaps and bounds Mystic can be easily placed in that select group. I remember when I first heard of Mystic in 2000 as the buzz albeit small, was building for her debut. So when I got my hands on a copy I knew it should be handled with care because her label was already having problems prior to her release and sure enough the label folded not too long after which also affected releases by Bahamadia and Phil Da Agony, so it felt great to have something I knew few had. I have listened to this CD more times than I can count yet I love it more every time and there are few complete CDs in any genre I can say that about. Artistically Mystic is on another level, and lyrically she can burn many rappers that are selling ridiculous units right now, and she's a really good singer/songwriter. Mystic is a breath of fresh air and when she recently re-released the CD in 2003 as Cuts For Luck Scars for Freedom...Learning to Breathe, I had to snatch that up too! I look forward to more music from this incredible Bay Area talent.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Sensual, Intelligent, and Touching.......2005-09-08

I first heard Mystic when I just happened to download it. Her music truely touched me in ways that hardly any other music has before. She sings about life, love, the streets, growing up, and heartache in all its many forms. After listening to what I could of her, I tried to find the cd at my local record store, only to be told that it was no longer in print. I am excited to have found it today, and wanted to pass on to those who read this that, first of all, I myself am a skeptic of recommendations that I read from people I do not know, but that I really don't see how everyone couldn't relate in some way and appreciate her music. It's one of a kind!

. . . . . with its beats, rhymes and versus, this is additional proof that the Oakland independent music scene is the best in the country . . . and I live in Washington, DC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Japanese Version featuring a Bonus Track

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth A Double or Triple Dip.......2005-10-20

Hey Dorrie, this version is just like the US version that came out in 2001. I already have the original and this one has a couple of bonus tracks plus a guest spot from Brooklyn's own The M-O-S D-E-Finitely and he records so few these days you have to cop anything Mos Def is on.
With Mystic you can feel the songs that really touch on hard topics like her father, having a child, being abused, her CD is the epitome of 'keeping it real.' So-called rappers who think they are MCs should stand up and pay attention and probably take some notes too.
There's also a Japanese version with another bonus cut and I'm going to track that one down too, lol Mystic is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Full of Cuts for Freedom.......2005-03-11

Mystic...wow! She does something for me on this album; the way she brings her dramatic edge ever so smooth and peaceful. Lyrics filled with nothing less than truth and complimented with an array of musical styles (jazzy neo-soul, hip hop, nice drums, conscious lyrics). Stand out cuts are "Here We Are", "The Life", "Be Free", and the bonus cut "Breathe". Guest appearances include Mos Def and Planet Asia (although not mentioned). This album doesn't waste your time with album filler, instead Mystic blesses every selection with some of the most beautiful "scars and cuts". Underrated classic.

5 out of 5 stars A steep purchase but worth it.......2004-10-17

This CD is worth buying just for the beautiful cover art, it's just a shame the price is so high but it's a must have for a Mystic fan. First of all, the first thing you will notce about this CD is the track listing is a little different than the US Version. "Neptunes Jewels" and "Ghetto Bird," are moved down a bit. The new song "Breathe" is a really good song and I thought it was going to be included on Mystic's second album, I don't know what the hold up is with the second album, but anyway it's a very good song. There are a few other songs not on the U.S. version but tracks like "Gottas," and "W," and "Fatherless Child" still stand out on this set.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2004-01-09

This album is hard to describe. It is so honest and filled with strength that only comes from a depth that is impossible for most people to reach. The music is truely moving, and if you can relate, as I can, it will bring you to tears of joy as well as tears of sadness. I highly recommend that you give this a try!

5 out of 5 stars Cuts for Luck Scars for Freedom.......2001-10-19

I am not a big fan of "Hip Hop Rap" at all, but saw this Group
On Tv's Late Late Show performing "The Life". I think they have a Great Beat..and
the Vocals are Superb! It's more then just rapping!
Disregard the explicit Lyrics...and Buy It you'll Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air.......2001-09-05

In a time in which it seems that all female rappers have to talk about is how they are bi#$hes trying to be with a guy because of what's in his wallet, Mystic's vibe is welcomed with open arms.

While her ability to write, rap, and sing well takes one back to Lauryn Hill's debut solo album, Mystic has a style all her own. It is evident from, not only her words but how she brings them across, that she has lived the stories she tells. Her style is one that indicates she's been educated not only by books, but also by the streets.

This whole CD is absolutely wonderful. However, tracks that stood out to me were: The Life (a celebration of life, even if it isn't perfect), W (makes you want to go to California and kick it for a while!), Girlfriend, Sistergirl (ah, we never tire of the classic theme of a woman reminding her girlfriend she is to precious to let men take advantage of her), Fatherless Child (and yet another theme that never seems to grow old: she overcomes the hardships of a single-parent childhood to become great), Spoken Piece (you need to listen to it to truly appreciate it), and Destiny Complete (makes you wanna throw your hands up and dance!).

Mystic is definitely one of the best female rappers to come out in a while. Her CD flows seemlessly. If you're tired of hearing women brag about degrading themselves and long for something more, this CD is for you.
