Be Cool [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This belated sequel to Get Shorty finds loan shark-turned-movie producer Chili Palmer (John Travolta) burned out on Hollywood and ready to tackle a new showbiz challenge: music. Thus inspired, its soundtrack bounds between a wobbly mix of Me Decade neo-classics, sparing doses of contemporary hip-hop, and modern R&B. Anchored by '70s stalwarts Earth, Wind & Fire ("Fantasy"), an early Kool & the Gang funk-fest ("Hollywood Swinging"), and William DeVaughn's soulful "Be Thankful For What You Got," it goes on to embrace everything from the energetic 60's Brazilian pop of Elis Regina's "Roda" to the Black Eyed Peas' standout "Sexy" and a pair of heated R&B tracks from Christina Milian. But despite the hip-hop-tinged story line, the tracks by 777 and Kurupt shortchange the genre a bit, while John Powell's jazz-funky suite of underscore cues effectively channels the slinky vibe Us3 and John Lurie created for the '95 original. The score's kitsch/loopy quotient is filled by Sonny & Cher's "A Cowboys Work is Never Done" and The Rock's lovably fey send-up of "You Ain't Woman Enough."--Jerry McCulley

Where's the best song in the film?!.......2006-02-01
Gutted that "Cryin'" the duet between Christina and Steven wasn't on the album. I have had to put up with downloading the just aerosmith version which is great but the duet was faaabolous!! Otherwise a good album if you enjoyed the film.
Buy it for The Rock's solo, if nothing else.......2005-12-15
If you need a little pick-me-up in the middle of the day, you can't miss with The Rock's rendition of "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man". It was worth the price of the whole CD just to hear that hilarious send-up, complete with the Rock's ad libs. Add to this the fact that you've got a FABULOUS collaboration between the Black-Eyed Peas and Sergio Mendes, and it's money well spent. Those two songs alone make it worth the money.
Be Cool and Don't Buy This Soundtrack.......2005-07-26
Out of the 14 songs on the soundtrack, there are only 4 that are excellent to listen to:
Fantasy- Earth, Wind, & Fire
Hollywood Swinging- Kool & the Gang
Be Thankful for What You Got- William DeVaughn
The Boss- James Brown
These four songs are REAL R&B music and regardless of what 777 says, there is NO "brand new old skool." Not with the crap that I've been hearing on the radio these last 8 years. Anyway, this soundtrack is the weakest soundtrack that I have ever heard. Christina Milian has to be one of lamest singers out there and I'm glad no more of her songs were put on this soundtrack. For the record, she is NOT an R&B/soul singer- she is as pop as a Coca Cola about to lose it's fizz. I really don't care to much about the Black Eyed Peas and their music, especially since they've gone pop and added that floozy to the group. Listen to me, okay? Do not waste your hard earned money on this soundtrack. Dowload if you have to, but don't buy it.
Where's Steven and Christina?.......2005-07-24
Verrrrrry dissapointed that "Cryin" feat. Christina Milian wasn't on the cd.
pretty good.......2005-07-21
it's pretty good, but why isn't the song with aerosmith and christina milian on it?

Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30
Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.
god moves in a peculiar way.........i am god.............2002-01-17
Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.
Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17
The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.
Excerpts.......1999-12-23
This is a collection of excerpts. It is in English and is quite good. The performance of the entire operetta has been discontinued and it is a pity.
Highlights or total Opera?.......1999-11-01
I would like to know if this is highlights from the opera or the total opera.

Album Description
Family power rock trio. As one critic put it, " Imagine AC/DC fronted by a woman who sings like Patsy Cline and writes like Bob Dylan." Internet pioneers blazing their own trail, they have been embraced by everyone from college radio to author Elmore Leonard, who included their lyrics in his sequel to "Get Shorty", the novel "Be Cool". They rock and they mean it.
Customer Reviews:
What's your problem?.......2006-06-20
I'm having a little trouble understanding the previous reviewer--What's with the insane anger? And why do you keep reviewing them if you obviously don't understand or like the music? Is there something personal? Does it make you mad that everybody seems to like/love this amazingly cool band? We love them here in new Orleans, and they haven't even toured here yet...but we're keeping our fingers crossed. Can't wait to get the new cd that we've heard some of on xm.
Very overrated here at Amazon.......2006-06-10
This is the second Stone Coyotes album I've heard, and all I can say is that it's boring, predictable, and very overrated (apparently, judging from the Amazon reviews). I would only think this was decent if I came across this band at a bar and had had a few beers. Imagine Bonnie Raitt fronting ZZ Top and you're halfway there, except that they're barely half as good as that would be. Barbara Keith may have a decent voice, but she sings here with little true energy and no variation -- if you like one of these songs, you're bound to like them all, because they pretty much sound alike. The best song is their cover of "Jolene," because it's a great song and it's not theirs.
If you stopped paying attention to rock in about 1980, and classic rock radio is as cutting edge as you care to be, I can see where you're coming from liking these guys. If punk and other risk-takers in rock since then have been too scary for you, then this band may be for you. If you want to hear some truly great women in rock, though, listen to P.J. Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, or Neko Case, to name but a few.
Be Cool and Listen.......2005-03-25
The freshest rock in years comes from a middleage rocker named Barbara Keith. I love this album. My 10 year old daughter and I are both inspired to play the guitar and rock. Nothing false here. Long live the Stone Coyotes. I'm seeing them next week and I am stoked.
why isn't First Lady of Rock the most known song on earth?.......2004-01-14
First Lady of Rock.
This song is just the coolest.
The greatest inspiration for all the aspiring grrl guitarists and singers like me
My New Favorite CD.......2002-05-23
One review writer for a major publication described the Stone Coyotes as "AC/DC meets Patsy Cline." That's about as close as one can get, yet this family trio certainly has a sound both unique and awesome. I was virtually dumbstruck the first time I heard this disk, and it was my first exposure to this band. Their sound is powerful and crunchy, infectious and erotic. Every song on this disk is hot, hot, hot. Barbara's voice is both haunting and searing, and Doug and John form the tastiest rhythm section of any rock band today, bar none. Their cover of Dolly's "Joline" is particularly noteworthy. If you like rock, you absolutely must own this one.

Horrible.......2006-10-14
if you like goodcharlotte or blink 182 you are an idiot and you might like this.
if you like the Descendents don't listen to this ever. you will regeret it
i downloaded it and started listening, and i literally though it was a mislabeled torrent, that's how bad it is.
should have stopped at "Everything Sucks"........2006-07-12
I love the Descendents and thier work. Lets just say that I was very disappionted with this album. It didn't even sound like something Milo would sing. It sounded more like them trying to sound like an unoriginal punk POP (not Milo) band. This album does not give the Descendents justice to what an awesome band they really are.
Bad note to go out on.......2005-10-18
Milo and co. have made it pretty clear that this album is to be their last, but what a bummer of an album to go out on!
I thought the 1996 album (Everything Sucks) was not only the punk rock comeback album of the century... but I'd even go so far as to say neck-in-neck with "Milo Goes To College" as their best album ever... and hands-down the best punk album of the 90's... but this one was NOT worth the wait.
I've been listening to the Descendents since about 1982-83. I've pretty much grown up on this band. I thought much of their post-"Milo Goes To College" recordings in the 80's were spotty at best... one or two great songs amidst a pile of clunkers. There was a nine year wait in between the album "All" and "Everything Sucks"... a nine year wait that paid off in a major way when that incredible album finally saw the light of day. Then there was another eight year wait between that album and this one, but the feeling this time is disappointment rather than exhilaration.
When "Everything Sucks" came out, the Descendents were showing all of these pale "pop-punk" imitators the way it's SUPPOSED to be done and reaffirming their rightful status as masters of the genre. With "Cool To Be You", they just come off as if they're trying to imitate all the bands who have been trying imitate them. This album just goes through the motions with almost no trace of passion or inspiration. It's well-recorded and the performances are tight... but it's formulaic and bland.
They should have left "Everything Sucks" as their legacy, not this one.
not to impressed.......2005-03-28
i had never heard of descendants before, but im a nerd, and i like punk, so i bought it. i just wasnt that impressed though. first it really sucked, then i warmed up to it and now like three or four songs; still though, if i dont like every single song of a CD it makes me sad. i think i just didnt like the bitterness. it makes me sad and a little angry, like they are just mean and judging everyone unfairly. maby i would have liked it better if i had heard some of their other stuff first, i geuss ill never know. i just dont recomend this for first time listeners of this band.
Good.......2004-11-30
I would give this cd a 4 1/2 stars if there were such a rating. I'm not a huge fan of the Descendents cause, I actually perfer ALL. I guess thats why people either like or hate this album cause it doesn't have a classic Descendents sound. It really sounds like their late ALL years with Chad. Just cause I'm not a huge descendents fan don't at all think I hate them I love the songs old songs Sour Grapes, We, This Place, Thank You,When I Get Old,I'm The One, This Place, Everything Suxs and Van. Awesome CD if you like semi nerd rock, I just bought Everything Suxs hope it is as good or better than this album.

The Stone Coyotes might be a rock band, but that doesn't mean they slip neatly into a stereotype. Barbara Keith's songs are influenced by folk music ("Where the Old Oak Grows," "If You See the One") and gospel ("Bone Tired") as much by Led Zeppelin or any classic-rock sound. She's a powerful singer, too, and as a guitarist she can flurry notes with the best of them, although she generally chooses not to, making her solos short and very incisive. For a three-piece, there's a remarkably full sound, with much kudos to the Tibbles father and son rhythm section, solid as a rock but subtle so you sense them without being overwhelmed. This is a band that's confident of its own identity--their cover of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" makes it sound like an original, and they're not afraid to embrace some neopunk on the live closer, "Saw You at the Hop." These coyotes howl. --Chris Nickson

"Situation Out of Control", "Lucky Day", "When Parliament Convenes", the haunting (for a sometime sailor) "The Black Atlantic", the kicking "I Want to Rock" the cover of "Season of the Witch", "Saw You at the Hop", what's not to like? How many albums are you going to find where EVERY song is outstanding? Barbara Keith had an eponymous vinyl LP in 1972 that I tracked down and purchased on CD (well worth the effort) learning in that search about her subsequent band, 'The Stone Coyotes'. All (so far) seven Coyotes' albums are terrific, with, in my opinion, "fire it up" and "Situation Out of Control" being the stand-outs. "Barbara Keith" was folk with considered lyrics. Barbara Keith brings every bit of that intelligent poetic sensibility to hard-core rock and roll with 'The Stone Coyotes'. Just the first song alone, "Situation Out of Control", is worth the effort to acquire.
I jest you not folks, this could be your lucky day........2000-12-01
This is one of the songs you hear when being transferred to an order specialist! Let me tell you folks, I called, and was put on hold, and after hearing this song, I was so touched... it was like an angel came and sat on my shoulder. Soon after that experience, I finally got to talk to a LIVE person, and she must have picked up on my overwhelmed state of X-tacy, that she was able to help me with all my problems, and then proceeded to give me a gift certificate for my future purchases! Talk about luck! I credit this song for my good fortune! You know, sometimes I call in and just ask to be put on hold...
A few more wise words for you:
Whatever you do, don't be downhearted, blah - blah - blah, somethings might be coming round the corner, this might be your lucky day,
this might be your lucky day,
your lucky day,
lucky day-ay-ay.
Excellent Album.......2000-11-14
For those of you who are fans of the Stone Coyotes, I would recommend tracking down an album by Tom Faulkner called, Lost in the Land of Texico. I think you'll enjoy it for the same reasons you like the Coyotes.

if you want to understand groove..........2000-08-26
to have any expectation about this album is to have it blown away by the opening power of the title track. moving from storytelling in "where the old oak grows" to the imagery of "my horse has wings" and the crunch of "bone tired" there are only moments to catch your breath when needed. this isn't to say that "situation out of control" moves forward at a breakneck pace, out of control in itself - to say that would be an insult to an album taking inspiration from all sorts of places musical from straight-ahead american rock to country to punk to rap - all strung together throughout the album, and, in this reviewer's opinion coming together in the spectacular "when parliament convenes" - thus sounding truly, for the first time in years, like no other band sounds...
The Stone Coyotes have done it again!.......2000-08-17
This album is so good that it gives me chills. I especially like "Where the Old Oak Grows" and "Highland Boy".

Customer Reviews:
Intimate and tuneful.......2005-01-14
I'm an admirer of Previn as both classical and jazz musician, and in both categories he excels. This album has the same intimate, highly musical quality that you'll find in Keith Jarrett's The Melody at Night with You. What I appreciate about both is the fact that the pianist's invention always serves the music; it's never obtrusively artful or showy. Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get Jarrett's disc to go along with this.
Underrated Previn.......2002-01-14
Andre Previn has always been an underrated jazz pianist. Because of his astonishing variety of successes as a classical conductor, pianist and composer; a film composer; a songwriter; and a performer of romantic cocktail music, he has been eyed suspiciously by the jazz community. In fact, his Tatum-like virtuosity, and his wildly unique and often playfully humorous piano style has made him one of the most interesting, innovative, and entertaining jazz pianists around. His many trio albums on Contemporary Records in the '50s (with Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne) still hold up as some of the best of their kind. But like Rodney Dangerfield, he never gets any respect. Thus, even his most kind critics are likely to throw darts at "Ballads" as too sweet and not swinging. Nonsense! It's not Monk, but it is nevertheless a beautiful set and a loving tribute to some of the greatest songwriters in Tin Pan Alley. Previn squeezes out every harmonic nuance of each song, yet he sounds like he's playing off the cuff in his living room late at night just to amuse himself. Previn may not swing like Teddy Wilson or Oscar Peterson on this offering, but I can't imagine any serious listener being left unmoved by his version of Burton Lane's "How Are Things In Glocca Morra?" It's simply gorgeous. Previn's amazing talents and his proficiency in many musical styles all come together in this unjustly overlooked CD. Give it a chance!
What happened?.......2001-10-03
THe magic is gone. After reading the liner notes, I learned that someone at the studio asked Previn to make an album of just ballads. BIG MISTAKE. I think he was not in the mood.
