How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? In the case of this survey of the second phase of R.E.M.'s career, the answer is: Exceptionally well. The dangling carrot for diehards is two new songs; the rapid fire "Bad Day" hurtles along like the kissing cousin of "It's the End of the World as We Know It," while "Animal" is anchored by a majestic drone reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." In a surprising, but gratifying move, the rest of the program shortchanges the band's breakthrough, Out of Time (no "Shiny Happy People"), to better accommodate movie soundtrack contributions, and spotlight gems from the less commercial, post-Bill Berry albums Reveal and Up; with its baroque piano and multi-tracked vocal harmonies, the Beach Boys homage "At My Most Beautiful" is particularly gorgeous, while the burbling keyboards and slightly dazed singing of "All the Way to Reno" will appeal to Flaming Lips fans. --Kurt B. Reighley

good stuff.......2007-07-18
this is a great compilation but the only reason i bought this album was for losing my religion and man in the moon...im not a very big fan of their other stuff.
GOOD MUSIC.......2007-05-16
REM have a unique sound and this CD is one of their best.
R.E.M. Rocks.......2007-05-13
I love this CD. Great song selection and a true joy to own.
Good Collection Of Hits.......2007-05-12
This is good collection of songs from R.E.M. from their Warner Brothers years but there are some hits missing. The obvious hits are there, like Man On the Moon, What's The Frequency, Kenneth?, Everyboby Hurts, etc. This collection is of their mainstream hits while there is another collection of hits "The IRS Years", which are songs from before 1988, which were hits in nerdy college radio stations.
R.E.M? G.O.O.D........2007-03-30
Enjoyed this very much. Will be checking out other cd''s of R.E.M.

The Best That I Could Do collects the singles that led John Mellencamp into the radio/jukebox pantheon he celebrated in "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." and "Cherry Bomb." While albums such as American Fool, Uh Huh, and Scarecrow held Top 10 spots for months, their spinoff hits made this Hoosier disciple of Jagger, J.B., and Iggy into something like a Reagan-era John Fogerty: not only were "Pink Houses," "Paper in Fire," and "Crumblin' Down" wise (and wiseacre) dispatches from an America where it wasn't always morning, they could fill a dance floor and get you pounding the dashboard on the way home. --Rickey Wright

John Mellencamp.......2007-03-27
Teriffic Cd. Always a pleasure looking and ordering from Amazon. I have never had any problems. This place is great. Very pleased. Thank you. I look forward to shopping again.
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed his music..........2007-03-14
until I heard a couple of his '80s hits on my daughter's ipod. So I bought this and wasn't disappointed. All great songs, all great to sing along to. I personally think his '80s stuff was way better than Springsteen's '80s output. Not as bombastic or nostalgic.
Good Collection of Hits.......2007-02-08
Good Collection of Hits but you might want to invest your $$ on Mellencamp's excellent "Words & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits [LIMITED EDITION]"
Great Collection of Songs.......2006-05-27
Great Collection of Songs
This is another one of those "best of" compilations. If you're new to John or just want to hear the hits (up until 1988), this is a good CD to get. If you'd like to hear what John is really about, I think you should get the individual albums. Although all the songs here are greats, it's almost too skimpy of a collection to fully appreciate John's great music. Still, it's good fun to have all the hits in one place for easy listening convenience, and I do recommend it.
Best Ever - All Classics.......2005-09-21
This will be the fourth time I am purchasing this CD. My daughters have "borrowed" every other copy I had. Just the fact that I would buy this 4 times (so far) should tell you something. And you know what? If I lose this copy, I'll buy it AGAIN!!
If you love John Cougar Mellencamp, this is a CD you must have.

The initial effort in what's become an ongoing collaboration between filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore and composer Ennio Morricone (in this instance assisted by his son Andrea) remains one of the Italian musician's most internationally beloved works. The bittersweet tale of a young boy's friendship with the local cinema projectionist and the profound, almost magical influence the movies have on both their lives won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and the Best Foreign Film Oscar, and netted Morricone a BAFTA (U.K. equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Score. In the late '90s, the music also received one of America's other great "honors"--it was adapted for a car commercial! The score is among Morricone's most elegant and memorably melodic, effectively evoking a rich cinematic legacy; it's a virtual musical love letter to the power of films and their music. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Cinema Paradiso is Not Paradiso for All.......2007-05-13
I adore the music of Ennio Morricone in any shape or form. I prefer his more emotional soundtracks like "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly" and "The Mission." This CD has its moments but not enough to suit my tastes. I've never seen this film but knowing Morricone and his mastery of musical emotionality I don't believe this movie would have been my cup of tea. It is still Morricone the Maestro of the movie soundtrack just a little weak in spots for me. For a audio delight buy the Ennio Morricone Anthology a truly great listen.
Great soundtrack.......2007-03-09
I love this soundtrack. Really beautiful. Of course the same two themes are repeated over and over but who cares?
20 years later and I still want Toto to be with Elena.......2006-09-26
When the Italian film made waves I was still a schoolgirl but it did make me want Toto and Elena to be together back then and now. This soundtrack is haunting and draws out the intense longing and yearning for a love long lost ... and the marks of our youth that propell our creative destinies.
One of the best soundtracks!.......2006-07-15
This is the soundtrack for the award winning Cinema Paradiso, a brilliantly photographed cinema treasurer. This is one of the most beautifully written scores that fits the movie perfectly. I strongly recommend seeing the movie and experience Cinema Paradiso!
Soft and pleasent melodys.......2006-01-15
The soundtrack of "Cinema Paradiso" is one of the charming ones, I have ever heard. The soft, delicate sounds of music which were created to tell the magnificent story-line, realy capture the heart of this movie and make the characters alive once more.
I enjoyed this CD very much and I would continue enjoying it at the future, whenever I require quiet piano melodys to get me through the day.

Classic Rock for any age.......2007-04-02
I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of this CD! Buy one; you won't regret it!
If You Like What You Hear on the Radio, Buy This........2006-11-10
I'm really just a radio fan of 38 Special. But I decided to take a chance with this "best of" collection. And I came out golden on this one. Every single song is at least as good as the handful that you hear on the radio now.
Personally, I tend to go for the harder bands. So I'm often having to enjoy my music in a semi-voluntary semi-solitude while pretty much everyone else plugs their ears and runs away. But this is catchy, very nice, and lively while somewhat softer rock and roll, with a more general appeal--something that the whole family can kind of enjoy together. I would probably compare 38 Special to the Eagles, for beat, intensity and overall listenability.
So far it has a 5-star average rating, and I wouldn't mess with that.
Great Tunes.......2006-08-17
This is really good music to listen to on a beautiful day driving in the car or just hanging out- I love 38 Special and this CD has alot of their hits on it. Its worth a buy
WHOA.......2006-04-21
I could see, why they are called Southern Rock indeed. At first, back in the old days (aka 90's for me), I mistaked this guys for an 80's band. Most of their great songs came out in the 80's I believe. So, these guys can't be southern rock. But that doesn't matter, cause they still kick it.
Caught Up In You, is quite a good song, due to the guitar solo. It's practically that 80's "Dream song" since it's so perfect in every manner. You know how the band Autograph had their perfect song called "Turn Up the Radio"? Well, Caught Up in You, is just as perfect, or more perfect. I can picture many things when that guitar solo goes off... It's quite astounding what music can do to the brain.
Somebody Like You- When this song first started, I thought it sounded a little like Billy Idol's debut. This isn't a waste of time ballad, like some bands right. This is happy feeling, yet sad due to the "broken" heart. Any broken hearted person could listen to this and feel great. This song makes alot of sense, which helps you come to your senses. (good line huh?) The Soli (minor guitar solo) is very good.
Like No Other Night- Very very 80's. I could see someone rocking out to this song. I heard the song "Straight to Your Heart" inside that song, by Bad English. Except, it's well written. I could imagine John Waite singing this. Over all it's a great song.
I reviewed only 3 songs, because they touch me the most on the inside. They're fantastic. I love .38 Special. Where would the music world be without them. This cd (off itunes) blew me away, listening to the whole thing. I listened to this cd many times last night, and I didn't get to bed until atleast 3 am! haha!
On my ipod, I only have hair metal and classic rock, aka like Journey, Boston, Eric Clapton, etc. I got sick of rap and R&B, so I took it all off. Sound crazy? Well, I've only been listening to classic rock and hair metal for a few years, since I was born in 1990. KEEP CLASSIC ROCK AND HAIR METAL ALIVE.
This guys are not Southern Rock in my book.......2006-01-03
If you looked up 38 Special on the internet or in a book, you would probably see these two words: southern rock. Widely considered southern rock, I think they have a more Foriegner-type pop/rock sound and feeling. This album is a rather nice compilation. It has all the major and minor hits and fan favorites. You get 18 songs on one disc and it's rather inexpensive. Not a bad deal. If you like 80s pop/rock like Foriegner or REO Speedwagon buy this superb collection of radio friendly rock godliness.

Great Movie, Great Music...Great Time!.......2006-09-03
For those who need to know and want to know....the name of the song playing in Doug's niteclub: "Essential Sensual" by Wayne Roland Brown. This song is not featured on the soundtrack, but the majority of the others are. I believe this to be the best movie Tom Cruise has done, next to Top Gun & Interview with a Vampire. That's just me though! Cauglan's Law: Bury the dead; they stink up the joint...
tinyperson82.......2006-07-15
Does anyone know what the song is that is playing in Doug's nightclub when Tom Cruise comes to beg for a job. I think I'm hearing the words "sensual" or "sexual". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One of the All-Time Great Soundtracks.......2006-03-10
Every song on this CD is great! It was one of my favorites to listen to when I was bartending.
Almost there..........2006-01-16
I agree, I also miss "shelter of your love". Especially when parts of the score is based on that song, you can hear it playing in several scenes. Too bad it was left out.
OK soundtrack for a Fantastic movie!!!.......2006-01-09
the song that you are looking for is "shelter of your love" by jimmy cliff. this soundtrack is pretty good, but it leaves out some of the better songs such as the one mentioned before and "this magic moment" by leroy gibbons.

Hard to Get Better Than This.......2007-02-01
If you love musicals with characters that are not one-dimensionally self-involved--If you love musicals without screeching sopranos and tons of special effects--If you love musicals with dramatic, realistic story lines, then this one's for you.
Simple and straight forward, this one's aims straight for the gut--without drippy sentiment.
The recurring 'Just Like Marilyn Monroe' is beautiful torture.
Try it. You won't be disappointed.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-20
We visited the musical in the London Phoenix Theatre in December 2006. The performance was wonderful, so we decided to buy the cd via Amazon. The performance on the cd is very good as well with actors who have almost resembling voices. It gives a very good impression of what happened on stage.
fantastic musical.......2006-09-18
BLOOD BROTHERS, playwright Willy Russell's stinging indictment on the Thatcher-governed years in Britain, has come to be regarded as a modern classic and with very good reason. Willy Russell's music and lyrics perfectly inhabit the locale and themes of the piece. The story revolves around twin boys, Eddie and Mickey, who were separated shortly after birth and go on to live polar-opposite lifestyles. Their mother, known only as Mrs Johnstone, is plunged into every parent's worst nightmare, when one brother unknowingly kills his twin... The story later explores the ramifications of the event as well as the aftermath in store for Mrs Johnstone.
BLOOD BROTHERS had been staged several times in the years before this particular production, most notably in 1983 (the World Premiere in Liverpool), but the show took a while to achieve a following. It wasn't until 1987 that a new touring production decided to settle for an extended run in London, and BLOOD BROTHERS began to make it's mark. Starring Kiki Dee in the demanding lead role of Mrs Johnstone, featuring Con O'Neill and Robert Locke as Mickey and Eddie (with Warwick Evans as the Narrator), this cast of BLOOD BROTHERS is one of the best recorded for disc.
Songs like "Marilyn Monroe", "Tell Me It's Not True", "Bright New Day" and "That Guy", are draped over the characters like second skins, they are so powerful in exploring characterisation and meaning. Musically in BLOOD BROTHERS, nothing happens without a reason, and this score definitely improves with repeated listening. Well worth your time.
So bad it's funny........2006-08-18
Blood Brothers is one of the most hilarious shows of modern msical theatre. The only problem is that it is a drama. It's overindulgent, melodramatic, and really quite silly at times. However not everything about it is bad. The music, if repetative, is mostly quite good, and occasionally very good. The actors do a good job with the material, and the narrator would be brilliant if the script would sustaine him. However one thing makes this show fall flat on it's face: the lyrics. Some of them are just over-dramatic, other are ridiculous, such as:
And he'd sleep every night in a bed of his own,
He wouldn't get into fights, he'd leave matchs alone
Now I'm not saying not to buy this CD, just be prepared for a trully hilarious drama.
Its OK.......2006-08-03
This musical is nothing special. I own two different recordings of it, and this is the better of the two. The lyrics in the show are nice although plain. The accents in this recording arent the best, but they seem to be what people mimic. The orchestration of this show is very nice, and its worth the listen. As far as songs, the narrator sings the most, and hes definitly the part to play. Favorite Song: "I'm Not Saying a Word"

This one-disc reduction of John McGlinn's monumental three-CD version of Show Boat provides 75 minutes of highlights in a package dubbed the "Broadway Show Album." McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including the original orchestrations, and conducts a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly-wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." John McGlinn's full version is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages, but this single disc is also splendid listening. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous.......2002-10-03
Let me start off by saying that my first experiences with Show Boat came through the splendid 1951 MGM movie version. Having never seen Show Boat performed live on stage, this CD pretty much brings the live experience home (and note I said 'this' CD; the full 3-disc set would be just short of actually being front row center). The immortal Kern/Hammerstein score is one of my favorites (right up there with My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, and Brigadoon) and is definately one of the greatest ever written for the musical theater.
Since Show Boat does not have an official original cast album, I suppose that this one suffices quite well. All original orchestrations are used here and the music is as it was on opening night in 1927. This is the most complete version available (whether you go with the full set or just this disc). The 1946 revival cast album is the oldest 'complete' album and is nice when paired with this disc to give one a sense of how Show Boat sounded in the early days.
I really didn't care much for this CD at first, but after listening to it a couple more times, I like it better and better each time. McGlinn certainly did right by this one! I'm not too familiar with most of the cast (save for Frederica Von Stade and Paige O'Hara), but they're all great. You'd think that this is a recording of a live performance, not just a studio album. Fantastic singing is had thoughout. McGlinn also did a great job with Brigadoon 3 years later, and did he not have a similar effort with Annie Get Your Gun as well?
I still think that the MGM movie version and its soundtrack album are the best but this rendition is definately not bad! Highly recommended. But if you can, pick up a copy of the movie soundtrack or of the 1946 revival album for comparison.
Dream Come True.......2002-08-22
First, "Showboat" is my all time favorite Musical, from the '40's and '50's when my mother took us to the movies every Sunday. I have video tapes of the 1951 MGM version with Howard Keel and Kathyrn Grayson, as well as the earlier movie version. A few years ago, I saw a TV special on the making of the three Disc complete remake of Showboat, true to the original score. I tried to get a cy of it but no local store could help me. Then through the magic of computers and AMAZON.com, I obtained the three disc set plus this single CD, which I treasure. This one is the best, without doubt. Now I have the complete version of songs and music I only vaguely remembered from the TV special. I wish someone would make a movie just like this version so I could have it on DVD. The whole cast and orchestra are awesome, especially Frederica von Stade. I have since bought other CDs of her work. Buy the three disc set if you can afford it, it has a thick booklet with the actual score and dialogue. But if you cannot, buy this CD. This is the ultimate, the prototype Broadway musical.
IT DESERVES 6 STARS.......2001-06-29
I can't thank enough all the people responsable for this terrific revival cast album. Here is a perfect example of how you should do a classic show and maintain the original intentions of the writer and the composer. If they were alive,JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN would have been proud of the way their masterpiece have survived them.It is impossible to imagine a better version of the show;this is the definitive one. It's funny when you think of it,most people know the songs by heart, yet it seems that we rediscover the show with this version.Suddently ,we are in 1927 and mister ZIEGFELD is scared like hell that he will loose a lot of money with this;but that's strangely the situation in which the modern AMERICAN musical was born.
Show Boat.......2000-09-10
I really like this recording! The voices are really great. I especially liked "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." I would recommend this CD to everyone who likes the show and musical theatre.

A Must Have For Oingo Boing Fans!.......2007-04-05
Two disks full of Oingo Boing at thier best. If you're a fan at all and don't have this I highly recommend you get it! You will NOT be disappointed. If you're new to Oingo Boingo music I'd also say this is a perfect collection of thier music to start with.
Oingo Boingo Bests.......2006-12-12
This is probably the only album you really need to get the Boingo experience. Recorded "live" to capture the energy of the band but without that annoying crowd noise and other distractions of a real show. I find myself coming back to these tracks time and time again.
Boingo Alive.......2006-07-10
2 CD's of all of the good old Boingo stuff!! What more could you ask for?
Pogomania for the Musically Complex.......2006-01-01
Danny Elfman may be better known for his motion picture scoring ("Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands," "Spider-Man," "Big Fish," "Chocolate Factory," etc., ad infinitum) than his work with the Mystic Knights at -this- late date, but here indeed is the evidence of his ability to write some real killer dance tunes and press his comrades through a studio concert.
The truth is, he -had- to. Boingo was a cult phenom and little more from the late '70s to the late '80s. An art band playing clubs for audiences too sophisticated -- and demanding -- to put up with "commercial" music, even including the pretty remarkable stuff MTV and KROQ were laying on us in '82 and '83. (They weren't alone: LA seemed to have one of these bands on every other block at the time.) As recording artists, however, they were just -too- sophisticated... and, well, maybe too -nerdy-. For the image-obsessed marketers, anyway.
"Alive" was not Dan's idea. It was the -marketing- department's. "Damn. They're -good-," was the general concensus at MCA at the time. "Why aren't they making us more money?" Live albums provided a bit more of an excuse to recycle the product than re-packs, so... here we are.
Good thing. The studio recordings simply were -not- indicative of this band's ability to amaze on stage at The Central or Wong's West. (This happens to a -lot- of bands, of course. Engineers are human, and doing stimulants for eight months at a time while grinding out three dozen LPs is likely to have it's consequences for -someone-.) Big venues were few and far between for the Boingo's by '87, soooooo, back to the sound stage.
The results, much as is the case on the best live albums in a sold-out field house, are much improved vs. the orginals. In this case, they are -scintillating-. "Alive" is a musician's album, but only if you're a pretty ambitious, unthreatened and self-assured musician. This stuff is -dense-, complex and clever, tune after tune after tune... at least on "side one" (and here and there on "side two).
The hooks are relentless. The lyrics are spiffy. The arrangements are -impressive-. Hell, the -sound- of it all is just -wonderful-.
(I was running a waterpark in Palm Springs at the time "Alive" arrived. The good folks at Budweiser had elected to use us for the annual MTV Spring Break show and had set up a concert stage and a 25K-watt reinforcement system. I had the engineer stick my cream-colored cassette in the player just to hear a bit of it over that huge boom box. He liked it so much he let the whole thing play through for everyone in the place. The reviews from all those frat rats were pretty favorable.)
If you're up for a "learning experience" -- or you can tolerate learning that you'll probably never be able to do -this- -- hit the buy button -now-... before you lose your nerve.
(My refusal to give it a fifth star is only because the second half of the 22-song performance is just not up to the first, but you'll get your money's worth.)
I'm on the Outside.......2005-11-10
Every review says it and its true, this is the best Oingo Boingo collection. It improves on the studio arrangements by infusing a live vibe, while not actually being a live album (in fact, they toured to promote this so-called live album.) However, this is just the best way to hear this band. Each song is not only note perfect and frenetic as a spastic cat, but has the added benefit of elusively evading the worst of the late 80s production "values" (read "follies") of the time.
I have the casette and the CDs ... the casette stays in the car on permenant rotation ... I can't stop listening to this.

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")
Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

The Best American Musical .......2007-07-29
The CD is the best American musical ever! The performances by Von Stade,Hadley etc are magnificient!
An American Treasure.......2007-03-03
When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.
I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.
If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.
The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.
If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.
DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16
One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.
Thank you, EMI.
I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)
An American tragedy...........2006-02-06
This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.
Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26
Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!
