The Grind Date [Explicit Lyrics]

Not only does De La Soul reach a milestone by releasing their seventh studio album, but The Grind Date is their most consistent, cohesive effort since 1996's Stakes Is High. For starters, the team of Supa Dave West, Jay Dee, Madlib, 9th Wonder, and Jake One create a gorgeous collection of tracks for them, ranging from the stirring soulfulness of "The Grind Date" and "Church" to the twitching tenseness of "Rock Co.Kane Flow" and the unabashed funky party on "Verbal Clap." Neither superficially commercial nor stubbornly underground, The Grind Date sounds as though De La have retuned to their own wavelength: provocative lyricism that's forward-thinking without sounding preachy, positive without sounding naïve. While so many of their peers have fallen by the wayside, Posdnuos, Dave (f.k.a. Trugoy), and Mase sound more robust than ever, joined by guests from the underground (MF Doom) and the middle ground (Common). Fifteen years after their head-turning debut 3 Feet High and Rising, De La show renewed life and vigor. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars Buy This!.......2007-05-30

This album came out in 2004, and when people ask me to recommend my top 10 albums of the year, I forget that this came out 3 years ago and tell them to go buy this. If you don't have this in your collection, go get it. There's not a track that I don't bang. And it seems like I'm always finding something new in it that just makes me go "Ohhhh!" This is a fantastic album.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not even a De La fan........2007-03-24

I'm somebody who would at most get their greatest hits album and leave it at that. BUT. they brought it with this album. The beats get no better, and the rhymes are tight. Buy this.

5 out of 5 stars These true hip-hop legends know how to grind........2006-12-07

In hip-hop, a lot of individuals are labeled legendary, without truly deserving their legacy. In fact, their legacies are more of fables, and myths then they are true legacies, and they only suceed because of the image they projected to the public, or the untimely demise they might have met. Then, there are those select few who earned their title as hip-hop legends; De La Soul are an example of these legends. They've been inspiring, and influencing emcees for nearly two decades, and while they are critically acclaimed, today's hip-hop listener(eg. people who haven't been listening to hip-hop longer than three years, and watch a little too much BET for their own good) doesn't show nearly enough respect to De La. They're not disgruntled by that fact, though; they just keep releasing dope music.

Although released in 2004, this album continues to bang today, as all good albums should. Just looking at the credit, this is almost like a hip-hop head's dream come true; an album, featuring De La Soul, with production from the likes of J Dilla and Madlib, and guest appearances from some of the dopest emcees, dead or alive, like Ghostface, Common, and DOOM. Throughout this album, De La brings pure hip-hop soul reminiscent of classics like their debut, Three Feet High & Rising, but also featuring some of their more aggressive De La Soul is Dead attitude, as on "Rock Co. Kane Flow." They find the perfect balance between sophisticated and gritty, funky and gully, conscious and street, to drop a thoroughly dope album, cohesively flowing between tight cuts from start to finish.

"Shopping Bags" may've been pulled from BET because it wasn't marketed toward their 'target audience'(in other words, it was good, intelligent music, which is a no-no in today's society), but true heads can appreciate charming cuts like this, "Church," "Verbal Clap," "It's Like That," and "Days Of Our Lives." While some of the other tracks aren't as rich musically, the other tracks aren't neccessarily supposed to be, as De La take a more b-boy approach, hitting us with razor-sharp lyrical darts, and denouncing lesser emcees without actually mentioning them. De La aren't on a hardcore tip, but they show you don't need to project yourself as a petty thugs to intimidate foes in the hip-hop game, which is how it always has been in true hip-hop circles.

While it would've been nice to possibly get a Prince Paul cut on this album, considering this album marked the fifteenth anniversay of Three Feet High & Rising, the dream team of other producers and guests are more than enough to please today's hip-hop listener, and De La Soul themselves would've succeeded with or without them. In the end, although this album is star-studded, it's all De La Soul, and the fact that they could reel in all these dope emcees and producers is only testament to their influence in hip-hop culture. Hip-hop heads shouldn't sleep on this album; it's flawless, and another classic from the De La Soul camp, only further solidifying their status as true legends in the game. The faux-'gangsta' crowd maybe too busy immitating their idols to give authentic hip-hop like The Grind Date its share of spins(and believe me, this record deserves countless ammounts of rotation), but real heads know what it's about. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Gladly Surprised!.......2006-10-04

I was skeptical upon buying this after it was released only because I didn't expect it to be this good. The Grind Date is an amazing listen. I was comparing it to the other greats they've made and instead of falling short, it stood right with those. Don't sleep on it-- It is very good music lyric-wise and beat-wise.
